Her book How to Pay for College is set to release this summer from Harriman House; its companion online course is available now.
Early in Ann’s career as a financial advisor, she heard the same two questions again and again from her clients. Show Notes - The Grow Your Business and Grow Your Wealth podcast with Gary Heldt
Tyson’s first taste of entrepreneurism came at age 13 when he opened a roadside snowball stand in his small hometown. This experience gave him his first sense of Financial Independence, and he became hooked on it. By age 20, Tyson had become a helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army. Although he was making more money than ever before, he also found himself the most in-debt. Luckily, he was able to pay down that debt while deployed to Desert Storm – and another important financial lesson was learned.
After leaving the military, and with fresh GI Bill funds in-hand, he earned a Bachelor's degree in English and, later, a Master's degree in Philosophy. Since neither of those degrees managed to pay the bills, Tyson turned to I.T.
Spending the next 25 years in software development and working for large corporations in banking and insurance, Tyson founded OnTrajectory.com – a personal finance tool for both regular folks as well as professionals. Securing investment funds in 2021, Tyson is leading OnTrajectory into a new growth phase, in which he hopes to bring easy-to-use and accurate financial modeling to the masses.
Tyson’s insights include:
How he created the OnTrajectory software in 2014
How expenses change over time and how OnTrajectory can adjust throughout the changes that occur within life
The budgeting and debt reduction feature of OnTrajectory
The challenges he faced when starting OnTrajectory
How people of all ages can benefit from using OnTrajectory

At twelve, Rebecca knew she wanted to be a lawyer to make a difference in people’s lives. Rebecca and her law partner, Dinh Luu, carefully chose estate planning and elder law because it’s one of the few areas of law where we can develop life-long relationships with our clients and their families and impact their lives in profound ways.
Many law firms create wills, trusts, advance directives, powers of attorney but few are women owned and do it with the expertise of elder law. We not only create the plans but we administer them all the time. This gives us the superpower of 20/20 hindsight with every client. Our goal is to provide the education each clients needs to form a reality-based plan that will work when needed. Every plan should honor your wishes, avoid court and maintain family harmony. With our life-long program, we can successfully do this with the collaboration of our clients and their advisors.
Estate Planning becomes Elder Law when we start needing help from others. Elder law includes updating estate planning documents, establishing conservatorships, planning for Medi-Cal and VA Aid & Attendance benefits, preventing elder abuse and providing counsel to families throughout the journey of aging. We also handle trust administration and probate once someone has passed away.
On a personal note, she is the mom to a terrific little girl and is a nature and animal lover. They enjoy time with their horses and cat.
Rebecca’s insights include:

Information on the probate process
Why conservatorships are awful
The importance of updating your wishes as you go through life

She is the founder of True Worth Financial Planning, which helps newly single women achieve financial independence after the divorce or death of their partner. Rachael spent 12 years in ‘traditional’ wealth management before a series of life events re-shaped her career path. Shortly before the birth of her twins, her husband was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a rare and aggressive brain cancer. With two babies on the way and her husband undergoing cancer treatment, the uncertainty was overwhelming. Planning for her family’s future was next to impossible, but she felt fortunate that her professional expertise allowed her to quickly adapt their financial plan. Through her own personal experiences navigating grief and finances, she found her calling — to support and empower other women during the most challenging transitions of their lives. In 2020 mid-lockdown, she left the corporate wealth management world and launched her own fee-only firm, True Worth Financial Planning. In her downtime, she enjoys exploring local wine country, searching for new recipes on Pinterest, and chasing after her 3-year-old twin boys. Rachel’s insights include:

Show Notes - The Grow Your Business and Grow Your Wealth podcast with Gary Heldt - EP 068 Bob Porter, Founder & President – Porter Investments Bob Porter is the founder of Porter Investments, a Houston-based money management firm specializing in quantitative, model-driven strategies for individual investors. The firm has worked with PHDs, process engineers, and other industry professionals to develop a series of rules-based investment strategies designed to achieve the goal all stock market investors seek; to participate when the major US equity markets are rising, but protect and in some cases further increase, our asset values during prolonged bear markets. Bob worked for Fidelity Investments before starting the firm. While assisting hundreds of executives and business owners with their investment and retirement plans, he realized that as mere humans, we all fall into the same investment traps over and over. From observing the motivations behind our repeated investment shortcomings, coupled with more recent advancements in technology and software development, his firm has successfully developed and delivered to individual investors a more specialized and focused approach. The models used in the firm’s strategies have successfully protected account values in the bear market of 2008 and the more recent pullbacks of 2018 and 2020. Bob’s insights include: · A story of realization that Bob encountered in a phone call · What makes him passionate about his career? · What questions that new or prospective clients should ask? · The reason why he chose to be in the field of finance · Success being a “lousy teacher” · Challenges that he is facing with Covid · Being a topsoil advisor before, what is it that he wishes he knew when he was just starting? · Why is it important to use a professional with people’s financial planning? · His suggestion on what books should individual investors read

Rob grew up quickly that year. Over the next four years, he lived in Newport, RI, Virginia Beach, VA, and Charleston, SC while he served as a Surface Warfare Officer aboard the USS John Rodgers, a Spruance class destroyer. Rob loved his job but found it difficult to balance sea duty with home life, so he resigned his commission in 1994 and moved back to Texas. Rob knew what he wanted to do, but didn’t know how to do it, so he took a commission job with a financial services firm – The Principal Financial Group. He learned a lot from some really great people at Principal, but after a few years, he decided to launch into an independent firm called First Texas Financial Services with four other partners. It was during this transition that he achieved his Certified Financial Planner designation. At First Texas, they specialized in businesses and their owners. We were a one-stop shop for insurance, benefits, 401(K), and investments, so he found himself wearing many hats. What Rob really loves and enjoy doing is financial planning and asset management. With this in mind, he sold a big chunk of his business and launched Schulz Wealth on his own in 2014. Now he is able to focus solely on my true calling. Listen to this informative Grow Your Business and Grow Your Wealth podcast episode with Rob Schulz about financial planning and wealth management. Here are some of the beneficial topics covered on this week’s show: ● Why having a financial plan is incredibly important for everyone. ● How a good team is vital to the success of any business. ● How there can be a lot of stress in the initial parts of financial planning. ● Why meeting quarterly is too often, and meeting yearly is not enough. ● How it’s important to teach your kids the do’s and don’ts of financial services. Scott Smolen established his roots in the business world by cutting lawns in his hometown of Bowie. When Scott was in middle school, he started a landscaping business with one employee—himself—and no plans for expansion. He was just looking to make a few bucks before going back to school. By the end of the summer, the business began to take root in the community, and Scott envisioned for the first time a future for himself as an entrepreneur.
Over the next decade, the business grew strong throughout Bowie, Crofton, Gambrills, and Odenton. It had 25 employees and a long list of satisfied customers when Scott sold the company. The experience gave him a solid foundation for success as a businessman and allowed him to branch out to pursue other business opportunities and interests. Scott moved from Bowie to Piney Orchard and decided to pursue a new career in computer networking. Although he enjoys computers and networks, it lacked the personal element that Scott had come to enjoy as he built his landscaping business. After careful consideration, he decided to begin his career in real estate in 1999 with ReMax and has never looked back.
