‘The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.’(Psalm 34:18)
2021 might not have delivered the fresh new start that many of us had hoped for, but we can walk through this year knowing that we never go through our struggles alone.
Katherine Chow encouraged us with the truth that Jesus sees us, weeps with us and longs to draw close to us. When we feel crushed, alone or lost, we can look to the redeeming power of the Cross – a dark moment used by God to accomplish His good purposes. As He did then, so too with us – the Lord will bring about something beautiful as we fight our battles with Him.
‘The weight of the world rests on the powerful and humble shoulders of Jesus.’
Life might feel overwhelming and chaotic in these challenging times. Drawing on the words of the prophet Isaiah and the Parable of the Lost Sheep (Luke 15:4-5), Ben Bryant encourages us to lay our burdens on the shoulders of Jesus – He is strong enough to carry the weight of our world.

In his talk, Stephen encourages us as we seek ‘spiritual treasure’ – the remarkable truth that we get to be in a relationship with Jesus.
‘“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.”’ (Matthew 13:44)

Do you feel like you’re walking in the wilderness? HTB curate Rachael Wooldridge reminds us of Jesus’s own experience in the wilderness. ‘For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.’ (Romans 8:38-39)

‘Come near to God and he will come near to you.’ (James 4:8)
The Christmas story is about God’s love in action. In today’s HTB Bitesize, Katherine Chow shares from the Book of James about the link between experiencing the love of God and showing this love to others through our actions. In today’s HTB Bitesize, Rachael Wooldridge recounts a particularly competitive game of hide and seek and reflects on how, in contrast, God makes himself known to us in the person of Jesus. Whatever happens to us, to our finances, to our relationships, to our health, nothing can rob us of the purpose of a life with Jesus. St Paul writes in Philippians 13 - ‘One thing I do, forgetting what is behind and straining towards what is ahead, I press on, towards the goal to win the prize, to which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
In today’s HTB Bitesize, we hear from Mark Roper who discusses Philippians 2:1-11. He says ‘the primary currency of the kingdom is not confidence, not capacity, not knowledge or ability, it’s humility’
When we look around, it doesn’t seem that there is a lot to be joyful about or a lot to have hope for. In today’s Bitesize, Jemima Hayley reads that the bible says ‘do everything without grumbling’ and discusses that God gives us peace and the tools we need to cope and to thrive in this life.
An interview with Nicky Gumbel. 'The spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me because the Lord anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.' Isiah 61:1
Right now in the world that is battling a global pandemic and change, it can feel like we’re unable to complete things or plan for things. But in today’s Bitesize, Pete Wynter reads Philippians 1:6 ‘Being confident of this, He who began a good work in you, will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus’.

In our Bitesize passage today, Paul reminds us in Ephesians 2:8-10 ‘for it is by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not through yourselves, but a gift from God’. Today Andy Wooldridge reflects on Pslam 109 when David cried out to God for him to help and save him. Andy discusses how powerful love can be and although it is really natural to doubt Gods love when you are going through hard times it is important to always remember that Gods love does not fail or falter.

This is reflected in today’s bible verse, Isaiah 45:1-3, ‘do not fear for I have redeemed you, I have summoned you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters I will be with you.
Today Jemima Haley tells how she struggled to find a job when she graduated from University. For those six months, Isiah 41:10 became her mantra ‘fear not for I am with you, do not be dismayed for I am your God. I a will strengthen you. I will help you. I will hold you with my righteous right hand’. When she felt a rise in anxiety, Jemima would speak this truth over herself. Just because we feel anxious, doesn’t mean we are anxious people - God has a plan and a purpose for us, because of that love He has for us, He will always fight for us and cast out all of our fears.
Today Stephen Foster talks to us about his friends passing - he didn’t know what to say or pray, he had so many questions. Stephen felt to support
What sustained him over the months, was the truth which is expressed in the Bible in One Year today. In Isiah 38, the Lord says this ‘I have heard your prayer and seen your tears’. There is not an emotion you feel that God can’t handle.

Today Nicky Lee reflects on Proverbs 22: 4 - ‘the generous themselves will be blessed’ - which inspires and challenges him.
We can reach out in love when we know what our neighbours needs are - this pandemic has revealed those needs to us. In showing generosity in practical ways, we have the opportunity to show the generosity of God. It is an opportunity to show that God is with them.
How can we make a difference? What can we do to bring change? In today’s Bitesize, Esli reflects on Psalm 106: 23 when Moses prayed for God’s people, that he would show mercy on them. Moses stood on a bridge between God and his people. Like Moses we can pray - we take our burdens and worries to God. Who can we stand on a bridge for today?
What might it look like for you to be generous today? In 2 Corinthians 9:7, Paul writes ‘God loves a cheerful giver’. Ryan invites us to invite Jesus into our lives to transform us inside out and to pursue wholeheartedly a Godly way of living.
In Isaiah 1:16 God is really clear that he wants his followers to be people of justice, that we will learn to do what is right. That we would defend the oppressed and stand with the vulnerable.
Ruth May encourages us today to think about who we know that is vulnerable in our society. Who might God be asking us to stand with? Love them, pray for them, take up their cause.

In today’s Bible in One Year Jemima Adjei reads 2 Corinthians 1, about how Paul managed difficult conversations and circumstances in his life. Like Paul, we may receive criticism, and it may knock us down. But Paul reminds us that it is not the word of critics that define us, but the words of God.
In today’s Bitesize, George Watkinson tells us a story of when he experiences kidney stones - he thought when he got rid of them that his life would be without trouble, but low and behold when they were gone his life was not without trouble. Today Kira Taylor discussed Proverbs 20:24, where a similar question is asked - ‘how then can anyone understand their own way?’. This verse also provides the answer - ‘a person’s steps are directed by the Lord’.
Kira invites us today to take some time to see where God is moving in our life. God is directing our steps, we just need to look at the signposts.
