Welcome to Women Bridging the Gap, a free-wheeling, conversation podcast co-hosted by Lenya Wilson, a Black woman and Alexandra D’Italia, a white woman.
Eavesdrop on our conversation while we discuss race and womanhood at the hearth level. We began this podcast in response to the murder of George Floyd, Amy Cooper’s weaponization of her white femininity, and the subsequent uprising. We believe that honesty, openness, and love can bridge the gap between people of color and white people. So let’s just call it what it is—what do Black women need to say to white women? What do we all face together? What do we need to own? Where and how do we show compassion? How do we move forward together?
Yet this podcast is not all about race. Boomers, Gen Xers, Millennials, and Gen Zs—what can we learn from one another? We want to explore what womanhood means in today’s world. We want to embrace all our contradictions and still move forward. We realize we’re two cisgendered women talking—and we hope to include LGBTQ voices in the future. You are part of this conversation too. We want to include all People of Color. Your voices all matter. And, sometimes, we just want to talk about our graying hair and living in a youth-oriented society.
We’re good friends, and we hope to share our journey and our evolution with you. We’re passionate, loud, funny, non-judgmental, and opinionated. We are feminists. We believe in abundance. We’re not journalists, but we’re open about our experiences and eager to learn from others. We want to empower ourselves and others. Did we say we were loud?
We want you to be in on our conversation—and help us move forward one conversation at a time.
Alexandra and Lenya discuss the balances of both doing work, and doing the work.
First work/life balance is addressed, and how we’re also facing hustle culture. Behaviors from this capitalistic pressure can be seen in the students in Alexandra’s classroom.
And both describe how they have been using social media to engage and distance themselves from what they need to.

Still Processing the Dobbs Decision
Just a nice easy laid-back episode about abortion. We need to talk about vaginas more, and this is the perfect place to start.
Alexandra and Lenya both share their own abortion stories, and discuss the anxieties of kids coming of age in a society that restricts abortion.
Alexandra also reads an incredible poem by Jacaranda School for Orphan’s student Felicia Luciano called Our Members of Parliament. A poignant and direct statement in beautiful language.

Where is the line between breaking the law and being a crappy person? That’s just the first thing on the agenda today.
Lenya and Alexandra are together again and the conversation goes from sexual assult on social media, to Bill Clinton and abuse of power, naturally, and transitions to Formula 1, Star Trek, and the war on Ukraine.
Events like these can bring to light a lot of racism that we all just live with and think is the norm, until the flashlight of light-skin elluminates the evils we have all accepted.

It’s the final episode of the season and the year! Lenya and Alex have some holiday stories to tell, and they are good ones!
Lenya went to her white neighbor’s house for Thanksgiving dinner where the topic of race and police violence came up. Lenya spoke out about policing injustice, and was met with, well, the reaction you probably expect but also can not believe. What’s great though is that this story has a very happy ending.
Less happy are two more stories of police interacting with Lenya and Alex at points in their lives, and how the police took things too far, and how their skin color affected how each of them acted and felt.

Alexandra’s sister, Candice, joins to discuss race and womanhood, in TikTok, in lacrosse, in being a mother, and in growing older. Candice D’Italia Gray is a former fourth grade teacher and reading specialist. She taught in Inner City Baltimore and Southside Chicago. Twenty years later, her students still contact her and call her the teacher that made them love to learn. Vet tech, animal rescue volunteer, and girls’ lacrosse coach, Candice lives in a predominantly white community in Wisconsin and raises her two children to not only believe in love and equality for all, but to fight for those values in the face of bias and prejudice.
What would you do as a mother, raising a middle school girl who wants to do everything she sees on TikTok? Candice tells Lenya and Alexandra all about what she does to protect her daughter, but also allow freedom to explore and experiment. Its a tough balance.
After her son enjoyed lacrosse in school, Candice’s daughter wanted to play too, so Candice learned to coach lacrosse so her daughter could join the girl’s team. Candice explains about sexism, not only in sports, but just in the default way that we all walk through the world.
Ending the episode with a few thoughts on aging, what it feels like, and what wisdom comes with it.

What’s up with Black families being blamed for lowering property values? Lenya took a stroll in a nice Black neighborhood, so she and Alexandra discussed why she would and wouldn’t move out of her nice white neighborhood. Also, Lenya talks about what Black people have to do to sell their homes, and an anecdote from her life where a sale fell through when buyers found out she was Black, but it sold when the buyers didn’t know that.

Welcome back to our virtual living room, because we have a lot of race and womanhood to discuss. Alexandra and Lenya are back for a new season with guests and hard topic discussions, unafraid to say what they think and discussing what it all means.
This episode covers the ostracization of Olympic athletes like Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka, and how when they try to do the right thing for them, their team, and their country, they get ridiculed and worse in the press, all for trying to do a thing while being a Black woman.
And it doesn’t just stop with the Olympics for athletes, but they also discuss how contestants on the British Bake Off, and F1 racing, and anyone on the internet can be subjected to anonymous hateful comments in the name of “free speech”, and there’s a nice rant about how social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and even TikTok delete posts and shadowban Black, Asain, and Indiginous creators, while condoning and allowing the hurtful posts against them.
We still have a long uphill battle against us, but we’re here to talk about it, and we’re happy to have you with us!

They discuss how sports bras, and bras in general, never fit right, either too big or too small, and if you want them to match your outfit, good luck.
They both talk about when they first got their boobs, how their boobs affected them and the other girls around them in school, and how they have grown through the years.
If you have boobs, come for the commiseration and to hear other stories about how difficult boobs can be. If you don’t have boobs, you need to listen to understand and get the full story about how difficult and othering and ostracizing boobs can be. This is stuff your mother never told you.

This week we are in conversation with Alexandra’s long time friend Conner
Born and raised in New York, Conner first came to Cuba in 1993 while finishing a Master’s degree in political science. In 2002, she moved to Havana permanently where she is an accredited journalist and freelance writer covering the Cuban health system, current events, the reform process, travel and tourism, and anything else that piques my interest – from dubious fashion and biotech to fidelity and the Harley biker scene. Conner writes books, essays and bad poetry...Available at your local independent bookseller (and also the online behemoth). Her blog Here is Havana has been called the best, no-punches-pulled writing about the island. In August 2013, she founded Cuba Libro, the only English language bookstore/coffee house on the island, and a pioneer in ethically and socially responsible business practices.
Conner reveals what it’s like to live as an outsider, and an insider, in Cuba, how the culture of beauty is so different, and how they embrace the full figured beauty, including cellulite and other things shunned by the American eye. She explains how the embargoes placed by the US have inhibited residents from getting the body care products they need, and now the Black community are making business to get some products in, and teaching classes on how to best use what is available.

Six weeks into law school, she made the jump without a parachute, and decided to do a solo (first time) trip to New York City. During her trip, she realized she wanted to help people in a more direct, immediate, and intimate way and is now pursuing a master’s in marriage and family therapy. Besides her educational pursuits, she works for a nonprofit org helping other people find jobs by day, and practices her stand up comedy routines by night.

AB Tucker is the gust today, and she tells the story of her brother being wrongfully accused of murder, and how that has pushed her down her own path for criminal justice, and to set right what was wronged.
As AB tells the harrowing story of her brother being wrongfully accused of murder, Alexandra, Lenya, and AB touch on the prison industrial system, and how the system doesn’t care if they pick the wrong Black man, or boy, and the actual perpitrator is on the streets and could strike again, giving the system another opportunity to put a Black man behind bars; that’s actually the point.
Alexandra uses her lawyer background to dissect the story of AB’s brother, and see where there were pitfalls, and maybe how to use them to change the case. But also she describes how difficult it still will be, a whole system working against them.

Strongwoman Andrea Thompson joins the Women Bridging the Gap family to discuss race and womanhood, at the hearth level. She grew up in England and not knowing Black history, and in this episode describes what it’s like to not only be the top of her field in Strongman, but to be the only top Black woman, and yet still not get the recognition the way her White counterparts do.
That systemic racism is so deep and so ingrained that when George Floyd was murdered and race became a conversation, it caused discussion, disagreement, and distance, leading to Andrea’s separation from her husband and father of her kids. Listen to hear her tell her story about that.
Lenya and Alexandra discuss with Andrea more about the George Floyd murder, about the Derrick Chauvin trial, and what the reaction might be if the worst case becomes reality and he is found not guilty. You’re going to want to be prepared for this.
There is also a deep discussion on body image, and a revelation that the most body shaming you’ll receive could be from yourself instead of from others. And talk about the COVID 15 and how people want to lose the weight they gained during the pandemic.

Long time friend Jen Dalton joins Alexandra and Lenya to discuss writing, where to get your news, bullying, and so much more. Jen is an author of a YA novel called “Of Butterflies & Bullies” available now on Amazon. Jen tells the story of how she wrote a novel about being bullied in school so that other kids getting bullied could have something to read and see that they are not alone, and they are not broken.
There is also a deep discussion on the humanitarian crisis in Haiti, the struggles of White saviorism versus helping fellow humans, and how Hearthstone Village is getting girls in Haiti to not only finish high school, but to go to college, too! Haiti has one of the lowest rates of girls in school, and a girls education is the greatest tool to get a community out of poverty.
Jenny Dalton (you can call her Jen too) is an author, facilitator, coach, healer and polymath. She’s an ENFT, Sagittarius, Manifesting Generator. Her work in the world flows from facilitating healthier local food systems and fundraising for an orphanage in Haiti, to talking about her recently published book “Of Butterflies & Bullies” – a Judy Blume inspired story about her experience being bullied in 5th grade. She’s also starting what she calls the Better Friends Club which will create a space for grown women to heal from their own childhood bullying. And, Jenny is excited that she recently became a Kind Campaign ambassador which means she will be facilitating school assemblies to empower younger girls to talk about their own bullying experiences. As a woman who devours learning opportunities and reads voraciously, she leans towards topics of spirituality, quantum physics, shamanism, plant medicines, the mysteries of life and consciousness and post-apocalyptic survival stories.

Zara Mokhtar joins Lenya and Alexandra to talk about race and womanhood in Canada, Sudan, and Los Angeles. As a law student studying in a forign country, and daughter of an immigrant parent to Canada, Zara holds a unique and interesting perspective on race, law, culture, and feminism.
Zara Mokhtar is a Human Rights activist and current law student at Southwestern Law School. Zara is of Nubian descent, raised in Vancouver, BC, Canada. She received her bachelor's degree in International Studies with a Comparative World Politics, Culture, and Society specialization. Her humanitarian work includes working with Amnesty International as a Regional Activism Assistant and assisting Refugees in resettling in the community. Zara's passion is to serve all marginalized communities. Her motivation comes from watching her Immigrant parents struggle through the challenges of resettling in Canada. She aspires to practice Immigration, Criminal, and Human Rights Law.

High school teacher Arleta joins Alexandra and Lenya to discuss race and womanhood in schools and teaching environments. Topics include what has changed in teaching during COVID, if Arleta’s race or ethnicity have affected her in the workplace, and what it’s like to go through active shooter drills where her priority is to save the children over herself.
Arleta is an educator and administrator at an independent charter high school that serves a diverse population of Los Angeles. She has been in the education field going on a decade and has worked in all sides of education, from the administrative side to the classroom. Arleta has seen education as an equalizer in our society and believes in its power to change lives, as it was her ticket to escaping poverty. When she's not shaping minds, she's shaping her body at the gym, hanging out with her wonderful husband, eating her way through LA, and her friends from all walks of life.

Nicole Meyers is an attorney in Los Angeles, California, where she practices plaintiff-side employment law. She holds a J.D. from Southwestern Law School, a B.A. in Theatre from UCLA, and is licensed to practice law in California and New York. Before becoming an attorney, Nicole traveled the world working as an actress and model. When she’s not aggressively advocating for her clients, Nicole’s likely enjoying quality time with her husband, children, and their three frisky cats.
Cassidy Meyers is a senior photography major, writing minor at Spelman College. She’s a Los Angeles native who has been living in Atlanta for the past four years attending college. Recently, she participated in a program called ‘Black Future Creators’ through Beats where she got to create content related to her photography journey, which was featured on their site. She has loved the arts since childhood, and plans on continuing to use photography as a form of self expression.

“A microaggression is a comment or gesture (whether made intentionally or not) that feeds into stereotypes or negative assumptions created around oppressed or marginalized groups of people. The term was first used in the 1970s by Harvard's Chester M. Pierce, MD. They tend to be based on a person’s race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or disability—and to the recipient, can feel like an attack.” June 11, 2020 Oprah Magazine article.
