In our Gospel Lesson from Luke 4:16-30 we see Jesus attending the weekly worship gathering in the Synagogue. Much like our practice of church on Sunday, those gathered would have an appointed reading from Scripture, followed by a Rabbi or teacher, or in our case, a Pastor, explaining and proclaiming it. So Jesus was the guest preacher that day in His hometown of Nazareth.
The Bible shows us that no person ever did less to be saved than the "good thief" on the cross. But in fact, the Bible also tells us no person ever did more to be saved either.
Everything the younger son had hoped to find in the far country, he discovered back home: clothes, jewelry, friends, joyful celebration, love and assurance. What made the difference? Instead of saying "give me" to the Father, he said "forgive me!" In the far country, the prodigal son learned the meaning of misery, but back home he discovered the meaning of Mercy!
When we look at the work of Jesus Christ and His death on the cross, we see a place where our Savior hung with His brow bloodied, His back torn, His face swollen and bruised and His body filled with agony unimaginable; yet we see it as a place where Jesus provided salvation for me and for you. By which He saved us from sin and death and hell and delivered us from the Kingdom of Darkness and secured us a place in the Kingdom of His Father; and by so doing this; we are granted eternal life and all it involves.
Lent is more than depriving ourselves of joy for a few weeks, it is a time where we are supposed focus on our own personal relationship with God, developing our mental, personal and spiritual health ----so we can make room for God in our every day lives. The real Grace is when we recognize that Lent is a season in which God wants to "give us" something, He wants us to be freer with Him but also in the way we live our lives and love our families.
God takes people as they are and educates and equips them for His service, if they yield themselves to Him. From Luke 5:1-11, the disciples went from catching live fish to catching men dead in their sins and helping them to new life.
