Lunch Distribution is Today
The next 5-Day Bulk Meal Distribution is on Wednesday, May 6th at the following locations:
This Week’s Focus: Flip the Script
Sometimes, when we are experiencing a not-so-great situation, it is really challenging to lift out of it by ourselves. We feel awful and it is difficult for us to see the light at the end of the tunnel. What if we had a way to turn an awful situation into a better one? There’s not a magic wand to fix these situations. It often takes help from someone else. Below is a four step process that you can use to help lift others out of their not-so-great situations.
There’s a link to a lesson associated with this in the episode notes for students as there really is not a magic wand that can substitute for practice. As always when becoming an expert with solving problems, it takes practice.

Are you feeling anxious and overwhelmed by everything?
Have you ever had the feeling when you’re traveling somewhere new for the first time. You’re anxious, excited, nervous, worried, whatever...there's new unfamiliar emotions to this adventure because you’ve never traveled this way before. I know, on the way back from many of these adventures with my family, every one of them has said, “it seemed so much further on the way here than it did going home.” I used to run a lot and one of my favorite runs was to run from my house out to the Cowiche Canyon Uplands trail. The first time I did this, it seemed so much quicker on the way back home. After turning around, I knew the route and could just focus on the next turn, hill, or straight-away. Folks, we haven’t reached the turnaround yet and I’m not sure when we will. But I have a feeling that when we do, it’s going to seem so much easier. It’s always easier when you can see the end...when we know what’s coming...when worry and anxieties don’t get in the way. I would like to encourage you right now to focus on just that: right now. Are you going up a hill, heading into a valley, do you have a turn coming, are you just struggling to make the next step...focus on that. And then the next step. And the next step. I’ll let you in on a quote I heard: “When we struggle before it is necessary, we will struggle more than is necessary.” Are you struggling? We’d love to help, so if we can help encourage you in any way, please don’t hesitate to contact any WVJH staff member. The staff directory is in the message notes.

We’ve been out of school for over a month. Are you finding your routine?
Hey students and parents! I’m not sure whether you will believe it or not, but we have been out of school for a month now. My hope is that you are finding your daily routine and getting back to the “new” normal. If you are like me, this transition has been difficult. There are a lot of things that I am doing differently now. For example: I used to prepare a lot of things for my day the night before so I’d be ready to “grab and go” as I left. I’d pack my workout bag (yep, don’t need that), have a smoothie ready, coffee ready, lunch ready, etc. Those are things I did before that helped me start my day off right. Now that I’m home all day, I don’t necessarily need to prepare items “to go”. I’m still working on developing my routine as I hope you are, too. I’d like to hear what you’ve been doing differently. If you’d like to share, please record yourself talking about those changes, save it to your Google Drive, and share that file with me. There’s a great chance you’ll hear yourself on this Podcast heard around the world. Seriously...this Podcast has been downloaded in Canada, Japan, and Ireland as well as eight different states!!! You could be famous!

Welcome back from spring break.
Alright students, we are back from spring break and back in the swing of things today. You probably have work to do in each of your classes, so make sure you are checking in with your teachers today, accessing Google Classroom, and meeting with your classes the way you are supposed to be meeting. If you’re not sure, just send your teacher and email and ask them. It’s pretty simple. Please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher, principal or the district with any questions or concerns. We appreciate your ongoing support.

"Celebrate Our Wins!"
Chris Reykdal, Superintendent of Public Instruction for Washington state, has reminded us it's important to "Celebrate Our Wins!" during this time of uncertainty. We want to share the "wins" happening in our school each day. What are the "wins" for you and your family? Please share your stories big and small! Every win counts! Email Ryan DeLozier with your "wins".
Spring Sports are Cancelled--Join Ram-O-Lympics Instead
With the cancellation of spring sports you might be thinking, “what can I do to fill the void?” Why not showcase your abilities in a video or series of pictures? WVJH will be hosting the Virtual Ram-O-Lmypics through this Friday. I would like to encourage each of you to post videos and pictures of you doing somewhat athletic things. Don’t forget to use the #RAMDEMIC and @wvjh208 tags. Have fun with this! It’s great if you have skills and athletic abilities, but it’s even better if you don’t. Have fun with it and don’t forget to tag us.

This is a read-through of the newsletter that was published and sent out on Friday, April 10th.
There’s not really any new information today that hasn’t already been mentioned in the previous editions of the WVJH Podcast so, I’d like to use this episode to provide you with a little encouragement.
The Right Response to This Situation
If you are like me, in early to mid-March, you were probably blindsided by the COVID-19 pandemic. I was definitely hopeful that we would return to school and I was really counting on spring sports happening. Sometimes, we need to control what we can control.
We may be stuck at home, but we are not powerless. We don’t want the circumstances of what happened to dictate something that is important to you. You may have heard your parents say, thought or even yourself said, “this isn’t fair!” I would say to you, “that you are right. This is life, and it isn’t fair. This is your life and these are the terms...what are you going to do about it?”
We’ve entered a unique season of all of our lives...this is truly a shared experience. It’s the first time that I can think of where pretty much the entire world is united for a common cause. I did a search to find out which countries do not have cases of coronavirus and found that I hadn’t heard of most of them and the ones that I had heard of probably are not reporting with the highest level of integrity. Like the seasons of the year, you have seasons of life. You may have heard the terms “once in a lifetime event” or “100 year storm” or even “100 year flood.” Weather has “once in a lifetime events” and the COVID-19 pandemic is most likely going to be a once in a lifetime event that we will remember for a long time. We most definitely didn’t choose to enter this season of life...but, make no mistake, this is the season we have been given. It’s the season we are in. This is our life. This is what has happened to us. How are you going to respond to it? You most likely heard the quote, “Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.” Friends, what are you doing now to prepare yourself when we move out of this season? How are you responding?
If you are still struggling through this stage, you are not alone. There are many of us who have been knocked down by this and have been derailed, which is okay. It’s what should happen...at first. What is not okay is to stay down. We need to get back up and deal with the reality of the situation. It’s gut check time. We are entering week four away from school and it’s time to find our rhythm again. We need to accept the reality and respond appropriately.
So much creativity is going to flow out of this. There’s a lot of rest and recovery going on, but there is also a lot of improving happening as well. Don’t waste this opportunity to be great. When the dust settles and our lives return to normal, you can’t rewind or press the reset button and get this time back. The time is now to take care of what needs to be taken care of. Even though it doesn’t seem like it, this is real life. We didn’t choose for it to be this way, but it happened and we have to deal with it.
You are not alone in this so please feel free to contact your teachers as we work through this situation and get back to normal.
If you have questions, please email me at delozierr@wvsd208.org. I may not know the answer to your question, but I probably know who does and I’m glad to help you.

School’s Closed. Now What?
With the announcement from the state superintendent of public instruction and our governor regarding school being cancelled, WVJH currently working hard developing plans for how to end the year. There’s a lot of events that would happen between now and the end of the school year that are going to have to be done very differently or cancelled all together. Please make sure you are staying tuned to the newsletters, Podcasts, and other school district information sources for updates. For now, I’d like to review with you some of the changes we already know about. If you are struggling to get a Wi-Fi connection at your home, please know that families can access the internet in any school parking lot, no password required. It may not be ideal, but it’s available.
Homework isn’t graded anymore. Why Should I do it?
If you are a WVJH student, you probably had that thought...you know the one. If homework isn’t graded, why am I doing it? It’s a great question and doesn’t necessarily have a right or wrong answer. What you, the student, need to do, is ask yourself, “who benefits when I do my homework?” Again, there are a lot of answers to this. The primary person who benefits from your education...it’s not your teacher, it’s not the principal, it’s not your parents...it’s you. It’s YOUR education. Don’t take it for granted...take responsibility for it!
As a leader, who do you speak for?
Yesterday, I asked the question “Who are the leaders in your school?” I concluded with my answer to this question...you. That’s right, you have the ability to lead...which brings us to today’s question: As a leader, who do you speak for? There are people in our lives that we stand up for. A lot of times, these people are our friends and family. Is there a cause that you can stand behind? Take time today to think about a specific person, cause, or group of people that you support.
Spring Sports are Cancelled--Join Ram-O-Lympics Instead
I was sad to hear of the cancellation of Spring sports in the state of Washington yesterday. Over 300 students had signed up for spring sports and now you may be looking for something else to do during that free time. Why not showcase your abilities online. WVJH will be hosting the Virtual Ram-O-Lmypics over the next two weeks. I would like to encourage you to post videos and pictures of you doing some what athletic things. Don’t forget to use the #RAMDEMIC and @wvjh208 tags. Have fun with this! It’s great if you have skills and athletic abilities, but it’s even better if you don’t. Have fun with it and don’t forget to tag us.

The top story today is: Extended Closure Information Updates
Well, it became final yesterday--We will not be meeting “face-to-face” for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. I would like to review some of the changes that have taken effect. If you are struggling to get Wi-Fi connections, please know that families can access the internet in any school parking lot, no password required. It may not be ideal, but it’s available.
We appreciate your flexibility, patience, and understanding. We care deeply about all students, families, and staff and will continue to share information and decisions as promptly as possible.
Question of the day: Who are the leaders in your school?
If you look up student leader on the internet, you’ll find a lot of information. In your classes, you probably remember some students who possess certain qualities or have a way to get others to follow them. Maybe you are even one of these individuals. If you are and you happen to be an 8th grader, there’s going to be an opportunity for you to run for an elected office and become a student leader.
I believe that leaders are made, not born. So, who are the leaders in your school? Well, you are! What are you going to do today to express your leadership?

Ram-O-Lympics
Alright Rams! Over 300 of you signed up for spring sports and, because of the cancellation of face-to-face school, the spring sports season has been cancelled. That doesn’t mean it has to be the end of “sports” all together though...we just can’t practice together or play games. WVJH will be hosting the Virtual Ram-O-Lmypics over the next two weeks. I would like to encourage you to post videos and pictures of you doing some what athletic things. Don’t forget to use the #RAMDEMIC and @wvjh208 tags. Have fun with this! Scavenger Hunt: Day #4
This week the West Valley School district schools will be doing a scavenger hunt. Each day this week, check WVJH social media for the scavenger hunt clues. Once you know the answer, take a picture with the items and then post those pictures to social media using #RAMDEMIC and @WVJH208. Answers will be revealed on Friday after 3pm.
Today’s clues are as follows:
Clue #1: Hold me light, hold me gentle. When you handle, always be careful. When it’s time to use my insides, tap me hard and crack my outside. Here it comes, the gooey flow. Into the heat, I slowly go.
Clue #2: Don’t frown at me, I made it clear. Won’t make a difference if you’re near. Just stand in front and I’ll show you exactly how the world will see you.
Question of the day: Are you missing sports? Spring sports have been delayed and there’s only re-runs of NBA games from the 90s on TV. We want you to stay active and want to provide you with a venue to showcase your talents. That is why we will be hosting the Ram-o-lymics. Do you have a unique talent or skill? Maybe you can do a sweet backflip on the trampoline...can you can Ollie over your mailbox...you can bunny hop your parents prize roses...you can do a sweet 360 jam on your indoor Nerf basketball hoop. You know you have at least one skill that you can showcase. Perfect that skill over the next week and then capture a video of it. Upload your video to your Google Drive and then share it with me...Ryan DeLozier. You can also share your videos with me through Remind or post your videos to WVJH social media with the hashtag #RAMDEMIC @WVJH208 Stay safe friends!

Hello WVJH! It’s Tuesday, March 31st, the last day of the month and here’s four things you need to know today!
Our first and top story today is: Broken Chromebook...here’s some other ways to access your Google Classroom Pages
There may be a few of you out there, you know who you are, who have broken Chromebooks. At this time, the IT department isn’t staffed to repair or replace Chromebooks. Here’s what you can do though.
There are a lot of options and hopefully at least one of these works for you. If you’re are still having issues, please let your teachers know by sending them an email. They might have another solution as well.
Our second headline is: This Week’s Closure Activity: Scavenger Hunt
This week the West Valley School district schools will be doing a scavenger hunt. Each day this week, check WVJH social media for the scavenger hunt clues. Once you know the answer, take a picture with the items and then post those pictures to social media using #RAMDEMIC and @WVJH208. Answers will be revealed on Friday after 3pm.
Today’s clues are as follows:
Clue #1: Grown-ups use me to take you around; when it rains I’m sure to get drowned.
Clue #2: I can be flat, but usually round, some like to paint me and some like to throw me.
Good luck, Rams!
Question of the day: We are going to stick with the same question today that we had yesterday. I’m looking for responses from students so if you want to hear yourself on the Podcast, send me a recording. Chances are, you’ll hear it within the next few days. Here it is: What’s something you miss about school? Record yourself either using the voice recorder or a video, upload it to your WVSD Google Drive account, and share it with me (delozierr@wvsd208.org). You might hear yourself on an upcoming WVJH Podcast Episode.
Did you know...that iPhone’s in advertisements ALWAYS show the same time on the clock?
The iPhone hit the market in 2007 and has changed the world in more ways we can even begin to count. In order to sell phones, Apple had to let people know about it through advertising. In each ad since 2007, Apple has displayed the same time on its products. Go ahead...check it out for yourself. You’ve got the time.

Did you know what...the WD in WD-40 stands for?
"WD-40" is abbreviated from the term "Water Displacement, 40th formula", suggesting it was the result of the 40th attempt to create the product. The spray, composed of various hydrocarbons, was originally designed to be used by Convair to protect the outer skin of the Atlas missile from rust and corrosion.
Our Final Headline: Spring Break is next week.
Spring break is still scheduled for next week--April 6th through April 10th. Take some time to relax, right?

Hello WVJH! I’m ________ and here’s the news you need to know today!
Our top story today is: Stay at home order issued for Yakima County to stay in effect indefinitely.
The Yakima Health District said yesterday that the stay at home order will be in effect for an indefinite amount of time. You may be wondering, “do I need to stay at home, in my house, with the doors shut and the curtains drawn?” Not necessarily. You should definitely go outside and play...go for walks...get exercise...ride your bike...walk your dog. State health officials say these activities are fine and even recommend doing them, just make sure you are not meeting up with friends, groups of people, or congregating where you can’t practice safe social distancing. You should only participate in these outdoor activities with the people who live in your home. You may be thinking, “really, who’s going to enforce this?” or “can the Yakima County Health district prevent me from hanging out with my friends?” The health officer has the authority to partner with local law enforcement and implement municipal fines at the health officer’s discretion. Non-compliance of these rules can be reported by calling 509-249-6508. Do your part...stay home and follow the rules! Please stay safe out there and help out our community by following the proper social distancing procedures.
Breakfast and lunch distribution sites to be downsized: In conjunction with the governor’s Stay at Home order, the WV Child Nutrition department is scaling down meal service to one location. Breakfast and lunch will be served at the Junior High from 10:30 to noon, drive-thru style, and walk-ups. This will help reduce the exposure of staff and others to ensure we are serving children as safe as possible. We will continue daily meals at the Junior High location until Thursday, March 26 from 10:30 AM-12:00 PM.
Friday (3/27) we will provide children with 5-days of meals, both breakfast, and lunch.
This will cover Friday (3/27), Monday (3/30), Tuesday (3/31), Wednesday (4/1), and Thursday (4/2). Children can pick up all 5 days of meals at the JH parking lot from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM on Friday, March 27. Just a reminder that children must be present to receive meals.

Hello WVJH! Here’s the news you need to know today!
Our top story today is: Stay at home order issued for the state of Washington.
Sunday evening, the Yakima Health District issued a “stay at home order” and yesterday, Governor Jay Inslee issued the same order for the entire state. This order is in effect for at least two weeks and is an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus. What does a stay at home order mean:
Please stay safe out there and help out our community by staying home.
Breakfast and lunch distribution sites to be downsized: In conjunction with the governor’s Stay at Home order, the WV Child Nutrition department is scaling down meal service to one location. Chromebook Repair and Replacement Status: We understand that some students are having issues with their Chromebooks, such as it’s broken, lost, charger problems, left at school, etc.). There are some things that can be done at school and other issues that will require a technician. Currently, our IT department does not have the staffing to repair or replace Chromebooks at this time but they are working on a plan. We would like to suggest that students with Chromebook issues who may also have another device such as a phone, tablet, gaming device, use that instead. I learned yesterday that you can access Google Classroom with your X-Box or Playstation.
Spring Sports Has Been Suspended Until Further Notice: Due to the closure of the schools across the state, registration for Spring Sports at WVJH will remain open through at least April 23rd. As of right now, it is not known whether or not the sports season will be cancelled. Please stay tuned to the newsletter and WVJH Social Media for more information. Thanks.
