This week, American traditional duo Anna & Elizabeth perform live. Anna Roberts-Gevalt and Elizabeth LaPrelle are increasingly renowned for their soulful and authentic renditions of American traditional music. They also create handmade 'crankies' - scrolled illustrations that depict a song's story when the singer turns a handle in time to the music. Anna & Elizabeth's self-titled album of 2015 was one of the best-received releases of the year.

West Country roots band Show of Hands join Mark in our Salford studio and perform songs from their new album, The Long Way Home.
Steve Knightley, Phil Beer and Miranda Sykes have collected three BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, sold out the Royal Albert Hall multiple times, and recorded 15 studio albums.
The Long Way Home is the first release since their 2014 project, Centenary: Words and Music of the Great War, for which they collaborated with the actors Imelda Stanuton and Jim Carter.

Since his early days at the Davy Lamp Folk Club in Washington, Tyne and Wear, Bob has gone on to establish himself as one of the finest folk-song interpreters in the UK.
He is known for his work with Tom McConville, Stu Luckley and Benny Graham, and his recordings for the Radio Ballads series on BBC Radio 2, most recently The Ballad of The Great War in 2014.
In recent months, Bob has performed the role of Songman in the National Theatre's acclaimed stage production of War Horse in the West End and on tour in the UK, Ireland and South Africa.

Among the guests are singer and guitarist Kris Drever (Lau), Orkney band The Chair, Irish favourites Dervish, American singer Aoife O'Donovan (Crooked Still) and local storyteller Billy Jolly.
Kris's Peedie Gatherin' - a group including top local musicians - and Aoife perform live in the remarkable Italian Chapel, built by POWs during WWII on the southern Orkney island of Lamb Holm.
There's also a beautiful music session recorded inside the 5000-year-old chambered tomb of Maeshowe, near Stromness. Plus tracks by local acts The Wrigley Sisters and Saltfishforty, visiting acts including Manran and an Orcadian classic sung by Joan Baez.

This week, Mark is presents not one, but two live sessions from two of the finest musicians performing in the UK today: Tim Edey and Will Pound.
Tim, from Kent, is the guitarist and melodeon player named Musician of the Year at the 2012 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, where he also received the Best Duo prize for his work with the Kiwi harmonica player Brendan Power. Tim's new album Sailing Over the 7th String concentrates on guitar pieces and this week he performs in the company of brilliant Perthshire fiddler Patsy Reid.
Young harmonica player Will Pound has himself been nominated for a Folk Award, and counts among his credits roles in the Martin Simpson Band and duo work with Haddo and Dan Walsh. Will also recorded the harmonica part for the 2012 Christmas number one -The Justice Collective's charity single He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother. His own solo album, A Cut Above, has just been released and tonight he's joined by John Parker on double bass.

This week, Mark is joined by Devon singer Jim Causley. Jim's latest album, Cyprus Well, consists of poems by the late, esteemed poet Charles Causley, set to new music by Jim. Charles was a distant relative of Jim's, and the new album was recorded in Charles' old Launceston house, Cyprus Well.

This week, Mark announced the nominations for the 2014 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and plays music by all of the nominated artists. An extensive panel of folk music professionals have cast their votes, and tonight Mark reveals the top four acts in each of the categories – including Best Album, Folk Singer of the Year and the Horizon Award for the best emerging act. The panel will vote again to establish the winner in each category. The results will then be announced at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards ceremony on 19 February 2014 at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

This week, Mark welcomes Scottish folk stars Capercaillie to the Folk Show's Salford studio. The band's current lineup includes founders Karen Matheson and Donald Shaw with Charlie McKerron, Manus Lunny, Ewen Vernal, Michael McGoldrick, Che Beresford and David Robertson.
One of the most successful exponents of Gaelic song, Capercaillie are marking their 30th anniversary this year with a UK tour and a new album, At The Heart of It All.

They talked to Mark about their plans for the coming year, where they will be taking a break from touring as Show of Hands to pursue other ventures. Mark speaks to Marry Waterson and Richard Hawley about Bright Phoebus, the classic record by Marry’s late mother and uncle, Lal and Mike Waterson. Richard and Marry will soon be joined by Eliza Carthy, Martin Carthy, Jarvis Cocker and Norma Waterson for a series of concerts - titled Bright Phoebus Revisited - celebrating the 1972 album which memorably blended folk and Beatles-esque elements with the special North Yorkshire atmosphere of Lal and Mike's original songwriting. As well as the Bright Phoebus Revisited concerts, a new book and CD called Teach Me To Be a Summer's Morning will compile paintings, drawings, poetry and previously unreleased songs by Lal Waterson.

Steve Tilston, along with Stuart Gordon and Keith Warmington, who together make up the Steve Tilston Trio, popped into the studio this week to play music from their new album, Happenstance. Steve tells us the extraordinary story of when John Lennon, after reading an interview Steve did with ZigZag magazine, wrote a letter to him. The letter was intercepted and Steve only became aware of this letter in 2005. This story has become the inspiration for a new film starring Al Pacino called 'Imagine'.

This week, Mark speaks to the comedian, actor and Grammy-winning bluegrass musician Steve Martin about Love Has Come for You, his new duo album with songwriter Edie Brickell.
Texas-born Steve's mastery of the banjo began in his teens, and during the 1970s and 80s it usually formed a part of his hugely-popular stand-up routines.
In 1981 he released a double album of comedy and music, and by 2001 he was accompanying the legendary Earl Scruggs on Scruggs' all-star reworking of the classic Foggy Mountain Breakdown. Steve's own 2009 record, The Crow: New Songs for the 5-String Banjo, earned him a Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album.
Steve now regularly collaborates with North Carolina band The Steep Canyon Rangers. Their most recent album together, Rare Bird Alert!, featured songs written by Steve and guest vocals from Paul McCartney and The Dixie Chicks.
The Steep Canyon Rangers also appear on Steve's new project, which is a duo album with singer-songwriter Edie Brickell. On this week's Folk Show, Steve tells Mark Radcliffe how the pair came to work together.
This week Mark is joined by the award-winning singer and fiddle player Jackie Oates. Jackie, originally from Staffordshire but based now in Oxford, has just released her fifth album. Called 'Lullabies', it focuses on soothing songs from British, Icelandic and other cultures.
Pianist Belinda O'Hooley (O'Hooley & Tidow, Nic Jones Trio) and guitarist Chris Sarjeant accompany Jackie in the studio for this week's session.

This week Mark's studio session comes from singer, songwriter and guitarist Blair Dunlop. Blair, who's based in Derbyshire, was nominated for the 2012 BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award. Just one year later he scooped the Horizon Award for the 'best emerging artist' at the 2013 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, thanks in no small part to his excellent debut album, Blight & Blossom.
