This is the second of the three podcasts including discussions with Museum Currator Rob Doane, Designer of GMT Games Battle of the American Revolution - Mark Miklos, Designer Volko Ruhnke and YouTuber Mike "Zilla Blitz" Smart. We have produced for your enjoyment a three-part series of discussions on the August 2023 Event by San Diego Historical Games Convention at the US Naval War College Museum in Newport, Rhode Island. The event was three days of historical tours and gaming including tours of the Battleship USS Massachusetts, various sites that were part of the Battle of Rhode Island, Tours of the Museum at the Navy War College and Tours of the Navy War College itself. The tours were conducted by historians, game designers and professional wargamers to add to the color and background. Gaming at the Museum was incredible as we played, flanked by torpedoes, models, historical documents and displays of items of historical significance to the US Navy. The convention was attended by a host of designers, professional gamers, hobby gamers and other interested parties. Of course, the museum is on base but our evenings and lunches were spent in the picturesque and historical town of Newport Rhode Island. We had such a great time; we are planning our return in 2024.

THIS podcast is offered in 2 parts, and is singularly composed of an interview with GMT Games President, Gene Billingsley.

We will discuss his work at GMT and also his latest design, Mr President. https://conflictsimulations.com/

Gene Billingsley founded GMT Games in 1990. As Avalon Hill turned to computer games and was eventually sold to Hasbro, Gene built GMT into the new home for board wargamers. He started with some of his own designs. These titles garner instant acclaim. Operation Shoestring was nominated for a Charles S. Roberts Award and Silver Bayonet and Crisis Korea won Charles S. Roberts Awards. I’m sure his current design project, Mr. President, won’t disappoint

As the distribution network for boardgames went into retreat in the 1990s, GMT pioneered the preorder system called P500. It remains the best deal in board wargaming. The system allows GMT to thrive in uncertain waters as customers vote their interest in designs and accelerate the production schedule of the most interesting. Customers get 30% off and can cancel at any time.

The Company is now the bell weather for conflict gaming, anchored by Gene and his partners Rodger MacGowan, Mark Simonitch, Tony Curtis and Andy Lewis. GMT continues to produce quality games with marquee designers like Mark Herman, Richard Berg, Volko Ruhnke, Chad Jensen, Ted Racier and many others.

I spent a couple of days with Gene during his semi annual Weekend at the Warehouse. We discuss everything from college football and his beloved Sooners to how he encourages designers to develop the breadth of offerings GMT has become known for.

We start the day with Gene cooking me scrambled eggs at his home in Hanford California. While he claims the recipe is from Richard Berg, I doubt it due to the lack of random events.

THIS podcast is singularly composed of an interview with game company owners developers and designers, Mary and Tom. We will discuss what is coming next from everyone’s favorite little game company.

Since all three of us were miced for this recording, I used an experimental method to record my voice. My voice is hard to hear but the great content comes from Tom and Mary so I went ahead and posted the best version I could produce.

Mary and Tom met in the late nineties and became friends over our shared love of film and science fiction. They started dating and were married several years after. They got into hobby gaming in 2010. Tom worked as a freelance designer, eventually shifting his focus from euro games to wargames. In 2015, Mary started working for Tiny Battle Publishing, overseeing the production and development of their first fifteen titles before leaving to focus on getting Hollandspiele off the ground. In 2016, they launched Hollandspiele and in the two years since they’ve released over thirty games.

Thanks to the Visalia, California based band Slow Season for the intro and outro music. Check them out Facebook, Spotify and iTunes. Also, thank you to the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra for their rendition of The Legend of Zelda - Suite

Patrick Rael is a Professor of History at the prestigious Bowdoin College in Maine. He was awarded a Ph.D. in 1995 in American History from the University of California, Berkeley. African-American history is Patrick’s specialty and he is the author of numerous essays and books.

Today we are going to talk about his seminar class, Historical Simulations, in which he works to answer the questions: Can board games teach history? Is it possible to analyze them as historical interpretations? What would such analyses reveal about both history and the way it is represented in popular culture? Which game mechanics or approaches to design seem to be better able to promote historical arguments? What factors may impede the representation of the past in games?

The Seminar Explores the past while addressing these questions. It examines six topics in history and plays one game related to them. Topics include: the age of exploration and discovery, the American Revolution, the French Revolution, frontier exploration, slavery, and the American Civil War.
