I’m delighted to introduce you to Juliette and Margot, the owners of Librairie Majo in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, which opened its doors on the 18th October 2022. Having first met as students at Sciences Po over a decade ago, Juliette and Margot have lived together in Paris, in Tokyo, then in Paris again, and today they live 3 minutes away from each other. The idea of opening a bookshop together started out as a pipe-dream, a joke. But dissatisfied with their jobs, and sharing a desire to do something more meaningful, the two friends made their book-shaped dream into a wonderful reality over the course of 18 months.

Today on the podcast, I’m talking to Daisy Johnson, author of Sisters, which was our October book club pick (and gave some of us nightmares!) Daisy was born in 1990 and her debut short-story collection, Fen, was published in 2016. In 2018 she became the youngest author ever to be shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize with her debut novel Everything Under.
We spoke about the trio of women featured in Sisters, about love, about bodies, about where the horror genre fits into intersectional feminism, as well as Daisy’s writing process and current reading habits.
Fiona is the French owner of Damn Fine Bookstore, an international bookshop based in Lyon, France. A few years ago, she quit her non-bookish related job to fulfil her dream of opening an independent bookshop. But there were a few hurdles along the way, including a pretty big one that goes by the name of COVID-19.
On the cusp of Damn Fine’s one year anniversary, Fiona kindly took some time out of her busy schedule to chat to me about how she set up shop, why she loves Halloween, reading women authors, and her future plans for the shop. She did all of this in English, her second language!

My first guest of Season 4 is Sylvia Whitman, owner of Shakespeare and Company Bookshop. In 2004, Sylvia took over the running of the bookshop from her father George Whitman, at 23 years old. She now runs it with her partner David, and together they have started a literary festival, a writing competition and opened a café next door to the bookshop.
James Baldwin called Shakespeare and Company the old curiosity shop while Anaïs Nin described it as a house of gentle warmth with walls of books and tea ceremonies. I certainly picked up on both of these qualities when I sat down with Sylvia in the bookshop a few months back.
We spoke about what Sylvia Beach and Adrienne Monnier did for France and publishing, the many writers who’ve been associated with the shop, Sylvia's father George Whitman, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Sylvia the Tumbleweed, navigating the bookshop through a global pandemic, and lockdown reading trends. And of course, lots of book recommendations!

The Margot Affair was released in June of this year and immediately received glowing reviews from publications such as The New York Times and Marie Claire. Set in Paris, we follow 17 year old Margot, who struggles with being the secret daughter of a well-known French politician. Family ties are called into question as the line between private and public life becomes increasingly blurred: not just for Margot but for the adults around her. In part one of this two part interview, Sanaë and Lou talk about the book’s inspiration, as well as the different female relationships that are represented within the novel.

In the final part of this interview with Lindsey Tramuta, we talk about being optimistic for the future of international feminism, everywhere in the world but particularly in France. Lindsey also shares her current / recent favourite reads with us!
Today I’m talking to Lindsey Tramuta, a travel and culture writer who moved to Paris from Philadelphia 14 years ago. In 2017, Lindsey released her first book "The New Paris", which explored key changes in Paris over the last decade. Her follow-up book is called "The New Parisienne" and focuses on the women of Paris. But as the title suggests, these women go far beyond the cliché and commercialized image of "La Parisienne", which we’re all too familiar with.
In part one of this two part interview, Lindsey talks to me about the pitching process for "The New Parisienne", the problem with French Universalism, the current state of reproductive rights and the role of intersectional feminism in modern-day French society. It’s an eye-opening discussion and if you’re looking for something that goes beyond the monolithic representation of Parisian women then I think you’ll get a lot out of this episode and you should probably order a copy of "The New Parisienne".

Both The FBC Paris and The FBC Rome, founded in 2019 by Lily Scarponi, have always had the intention of creating a safe space for book club members to play as active a role in the discussions as they would like and to be vocal allies of communities that experience social injustices first-hand, one of which is racism.
The tragic deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor in the United States, has sparked a global conversation and movement that is saying very clearly: enough is enough.
Camille, Lily and myself wanted to take a moment to check in with each other, as white women who run book clubs that focus on intersectional feminism and who will never have to directly experience racism. We are sitting with ourselves and figuring out how to be better anti-racist allies, both within and outside of book club sessions. We acknowledge that we have and we will mess up when it comes to being anti-racist but we want to hold ourselves accountable. We understand that this is something we have to work at actively day in and day out, and are grateful for all the resources that are available to us in many formats. We see that we need to get uncomfortable and talk more about white supremacy.

Today I’m talking to Zeba Talkhani, author of the recently published memoirMy Past Is A Foreign Country: A Muslim Feminist Finds Herself. In this honest and insightful book, Zeba writes with clarity and vulnerability - no topic is off the table. We discover her experience with hair loss, which started when Zeba was a teenager, the complicated relationship with her mother, a thirst for education and the tension that caused amongst her family and friends. She also shares with us her journey to aligning her Muslim faith with her feminist beliefs, growing up in Saudia Arabia, as well as finding love on her own terms.
Born in 1991 in Sirsi, South India, Zeba has already packed so much into her 28 years. Getting her life experience down on paper is an opportunity that she clearly took seriously - growing up, Zeba was painfully aware of the lack of representation in the books she read and so felt a responsibility towards younger generations who may be suffering in silence like her. Today, Zeba is based in London and on top of being a published author, she’s a production editor at Bloomsbury publishing house.
