Johann Joseph and Matthew Soto love the 1997 movie Starship Troopers so much they decided to go over the movie minute by minute with details you may have missed. New episodes will be released every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
This is our last episode of the Roughneck Minute! On behalf of Johann and Matthew I want to thank you all for sticking with us and watching this movie minute by minute (even though we slightly cheated on the credits). You guys are the best and keep up with us on social media we will be dropping some movie reviews from time to time. We love you all!
Matthew talks about another movie from his childhood and Johann talks boom mic operators.
Its time to roll the credits on our film and we do a rundown on the producers, editors, and main/secondary actors in our little jaunt to kill bugs. Matthew tries to get Johann to watch a movie and Johann forgets the name of a very famous actor.
We’re at the end of the movie! We still have the credits cast coming up but we are done with the film proper. We’ve got new ships, new guns, but all we need is you! Johann and Matthew go over the new tech the Federation has but still wont use just yet and discuss non deserved promotions of certain officers. Matthew then goes on a tirade comparing the scanning in scene in Starship Troopers III to the body suit fitting in G Gundam. We then go over why G Gundam is a problem.

We discuss how even though Carmen thinks only good things happen when the gang is together they really aren’t as good as she really thinks. A well accepted theory is confirmed and we see an old friend of the group who has done something amazing.
Johann and Matthew have an argument about fruit in this episode while also talking about the results of our Who Should Be Recast As Carmen Poll on the facebook group. We then discuss the bloopers that can be seen reflecting in the eyes of the brain bug and how powerful Carl is now.

Jonathan Howell joins us for the last time this week and we discuss why foreign dudes love vaginas so much. We then talk about making the movie better by recasting Carmen and making this a quasi ‘We Hate Carmen’ minute. We also talk how awesome Infinity War was a week before it came out.

Jonathan Howell, IMF Agent and fellow MxM podcast host, joins us once again this Wednesday to talk about his love for the Morita Assault Rifle MK I. We all get into our favorite scifi weapons while Matthew and Johann disagree about the look of future guns. We then talk about the loss of a great character and once again why it isn’t Carmen. Jonathan has the same question we had last week, who the hell is leading the rest of the squad?

We start off the episode a little SPOILERY when Matthew talks about the differences between the movie and book Ready Player One (Starts at 2:42 and ends at 3:54 if you want to avoid it).

Be warned we have the biggest bomb in the movie in this minute. It is a HARD bomb as well so if you are listening to this on a christian Minecraft server you may want to mute yourself. We then go over the movie magic for brain sucking. Please check out the article that we have used for any of our notes pertaining to the bugs and their production.

The Brain Bug is here and we have a ton of notes about the Brain. How it was made, what it was made of, and the Meat Wave! We get into the possible evolution of the brain and how it must have been pretty damn curious to stick its proboscis into some hairless ape’s head to suck out the juicy innards.

Johann and Matthew discuss their discovery of anthropomorphized animals in movies/cartoons and how it made them feel. Movie stunts and injuries are then brought up because of the conditions in this particular scene and a scene later on in the film. Matthew then brings up a really good question. Who is in charge of the squad when Rico, Sugar, and Ace leave?

Johann and Matthew come up with a new horror movie offshoot of starship troopers with Carmen loosing all appendages and being at the mercy of the Brain/Chariot Bugs. We then speculate that with this Carmen could redeem herself and become some kind of Federation RoboCop and get new body parts. Johann then shoots down the idea that Johnny Cage could tell that Princess Kitana had 300 year old perfume.

Johann finally gets his chance to convince us that Sugar has some underlying feelings for his LT. Matthew explains why Zander probably can’t die from the giant gaping wound in his leg and what Verhoeven tried to make Carmen do but ultimately failed in the end.

Johann gets Matthew to talk about Star Trek again while bringing up the structural stability of the escape pod as it slams into a mountain. We discuss the youtube hole Matthew goes down watching MRE reviews and eating MREs. Johann then has a bit of an issue with a squad name from a book written in 1959. It has nothing to do with race or anything but man does it get a little confusing. Johann also has a theory about two characters possibly having some kind of relationship besides a professional relationship.

We discover a possible subliminal message made to make Carmen look worse even if any of the other deleted scenes made her look better but we spend five minutes discussing the same points to come to the same conclusion. Matthew then tries a horrible Kirk impression and Johann talks about burial.
We’re going over the last official deleted scene of our movie in this episode that was ultimately cut because of Carmen’s lack of compassion/humanity. We also talk about how much Johnny has grown into an amazing young man who now doesn’t need anyone but his troopers.

We talk the possibility of Starship being shot for 3D audiences before discussing the body horror that Verhoeven seems to like showing off. We say goodbye to two other heroes of the Federation. They did their duty and stayed till the very end. We also close out the episode to talk about the structural integrity of the Federal Skyhook and Matthew’s favorite batman.

Why does this outpost have a general stationed there? He may be low level but Johann and Matthew ask this question and have a few ideas as to why he is there. Matthew tries to imagine what George Lucas would be like if he liked to hunt the most dangerous game of all; John Leguizamo. This movie could use a studio audience to let the viewers at home know something saucy is going on. As Johann and Matthew go over this fun minute we discover that the Lt. May have some other fun things for our troopers to enjoy besides beer and sports equipment. Well he does say he gives ‘the best’. Matthew has a question about a certain line in the movie and Johann sheds some light about it and Rasczak’s family with a few lines from our copy of the draft script. Matthew then warns us of searching for certain things on the internet.
Johann and Matthew both have problems with this minute and they both air their grievances. Johann thinks Rico is still somewhat dumb as rocks and Matthew also thinks that but for different reasons. In this episode we decide to come up with a definitive collective noun for the warriors in this minute and guys over the squads new LT. Then after discussing the arms and legs of the subject we tangent into transformers, other toys, and why Matthew loves to root for the bad guys.
Matthew thinks he caught someone doing some personal grooming in this minute but Johann comes in with the save knowing about hockey goalie equipment. Matthew does drop some hip hop music scene news that goes in line with this episodes tangent just perfectly. Jessica (Matthew’s wife) also makes her almost regular guest appearance and saves the boys when they can’t think of a certain actress.
We get some Hot Goss in this episode when Crystal Beth and John Robert Wilson tell us about John’s fear of wearing the same kind of trunks Rico is wearing in fear of attracting all the men at the gay beach. New edition of the Fed Net! Matthew has a lot of questions in this episode. Like why show the Federal dead to the common Federal citizen and was BA an inside job? He sure thinks so. Johann isn’t as convinced but finds comfort in our new Sky Marshal. We also go into a wrestling tangent so hey thats fun!
In this episode Matthew talks about the importance of turning off your brain and enjoying some dumb distruction while Johann brings us all the way to Rick Astley on a tangent. But fret not dear listeners we do talk about our movie and discuss weapons, gore, and MORE!
Welcome to 2018. Johann tries to emulate his favorite wrestling promoters in this episode and we talk a bit about wrestling but also bring the minute to the ring. We discuss the Arachnid tactics and their show of force even if it is small is very devastating. Johann also brings up how this scene shows how great our actors really are.
We get to meet two new characters in this minute. Mechwar and Snappy! Two Warrior Bug puppets who played a big roll in the film. Mechwar and Snappy play a very intense scene with Shijimi. We also talk about the good and bad of the TV show Dexter. Matthew’s wife makes a small guest appearance giving us some vital information.
We get our first KIA in this minute of the movie and its someone we haven’t known for long but that doesn’t make it feel any better. Johann and Matthew discuss a certain Harvard bound trooper who is going a little bloodlusty, the proper way to play flight sims, and the lack of polygons in the Starship Troopers video game.
A quick little view behind the curtain here at The Roughneck Minute, our Holiday greetings, and thanks to all of you listeners. We love you!
In this episode we talk about the Plasma Bugs and how they may have evolved. Matthew asks questions that won’t get answered and Johann comes up with a brilliant idea about the Plasmas. Matthew then talks about the tactical nuke and his love for the bomb. Tangents are made and we end up talking about pinball.
Johann has a bit of trouble finding words in this episode but so does Matthew so we wont hold it against them both. Johann goes into some of the movie magic and locations of the current minute and Matthew goes all fangirl over one shot in particular.
Well guys someone made a mistake. A big Gull Darn Mistake. Johann brings up the horrible robot lips of the first live action Transformers movie and Matthew gives us a little information on a certain presidential offspring. We then get into TV edits of curses in movies. Matthew’s number one is in this minute and it is not a Big Gull Darn Mistake.
We end this week with a continuation of the last minute and we follow the troopers though the atmosphere of Klendathu. Johann presses Matthew to finally watch The Orville and Matthew reads a small bit of the book.
Johann takes the helm of this episode with some awesome facts about the iconic music in this minute that also happens to be the intro to our podcast. Matthew gets giddy about another cut script scene that was in the book but never made the movie. Johann also gives us a little peak in where a certain military scientist was possibly made to end up in this scene.
Well here we are. Johann lays it all on the table about the song choice for this fight scene. Matthew has other ideas about the choice of music and various other music in movies. Johann decides on a new tattoo and Matthew checks out the weaponry on display.
This could be a We Hate Carmen Minute but it turns into more of a What The Hell Zander Minute. Johann and Matthew discuss why Zander is kind of a bad guy in this minute and why Rico is just trying to get away but Zander keeps pushing. We also have our Christmas Special where we go over our personal top 3 Christmas Movies and then go over Rotten Tomatoes Top 5 and why they were or weren’t on our list.
Welcome back to what seems to be a regular segment in this podcast; The We Hate Carmen Minute. Johann dives into body modification and lets us know that ‘getting cut’ isn’t a thing no matter how much Kitten wants it to be a thing. Matthew gets a little excited about a cut script element that mirrors the book. Johann also discovers our favorite person to hate is in this minute.
Johann gives us an insight to coaching with crazy sports moms who love to watch their little angles smash bugs. Matthew dives into some knowledge about Star Trek ships but stops before a nerd alert can be called. Rico gives us the most iconic line of this movie.
The Sky Marshal has addressed the nation and we are sending Thoughts And Prayers to BA. Johann marvels at the shooting skills of a certain military scientist we may know and Matthew feels bad for the enemy. We’re trying a new way of recording this episode and personally I think it sounds great. Let us know if you like it or dislike it on our facebook group or on twitter.
Johann has an idea for keeping peace in the Federation and it sounds downright delicious. Matthew is willing to bring some SEASONING to help with Johann’s idea. Johann then gives us a movie recommendation that Matthew has yet to see but now is dying to watch.
Matthew cannot finish the intro this episode but that is because he has other things on his mind. Like WHO WAS BEHIND BA?! Was it the bugs? Well sure but did the government allow BA to happen to go into an endless war with the Arachnid menace?! Johann has a more grounded idea and also brings up some classic 3D movies.
So many things are wrong in this episode. Matthew calls out a possible CGI flub but it is recanted in less than 20 seconds. We then talk a bit about the bug meteor getting to earth and how long it would take. Johann gets frustrated but Matthew gives him the answer to all his questions. It may not be the one he wants though.
This is a short one but we get into the book version of Mr. Rico and how awesome it would have been if Verhoeven decided to end the movie the same way the book ended. Johann brings up a little detail about Rico’s punishment that Matthew never noticed and both guys get into a discussion about late 90’s aspect ratios. Happy Thanksgiving from The Roughneck Minute! We love you all!
We are assaulted by Carmen’s attempt at a human smile and quickly move on not lingering longer than we have to. We discuss differences in the script and a possible future game by our good money makers Wizards of the Coast. They may have made a Starship version of Magic and both Johann and Matthew are ready to throw down their life savings to stay current. Whats one more pack right?
We finish out this week with Carmen and Zander saving the ship but at what cost?! Matthew and Johann make some corrections but mostly talk about weird writing, TV snow, and how Carmen should have just walked down the lefthand side. Please forgive the typing in the background Matthew’s wife loves to hammer on her Cherry Blues.
Johann is back and he has a few notes for the past minutes as well as for this minute as well. Things got a little hot and heavy in t he script and we are fine the way the movie handled the scene compared to how the script went. Matthew talks a bit more about space stuff and Johann has another conspiracy theory.
Johann is still gone for this episode but John Papageorgiou has come back to fill the host seat for one more ‘MEDIC’ filled episode. Matthew finds a strange line and will not shut up about it even when John kind of explains it. John has an issue with Carmen and her ‘stupid hairdoo’. Then Matthew gets all stupid fangirl with John and requests a followup to a story that you’d only know about if you listened to John’s podcast. So why not do that and get caught up so it makes it seem that Matthew is making horrible podcasting material.
Please check out John’s Podcast Papa's Basement and be sure to give him a follow on twitter @papasbasement
We are down a regular host this episode but up a special guest host. John Papageorgiou of the Comedy podcast Papa’s Basement. We get hate heavy on Carmen once again in what is now becoming a common segment in our little podcast. From her small roll in Saved By the Bell to her being a not very convincing nuclear technician and Bond girl we dig into her pretty hard. We also go into John’s Verhoeven history and his past experience with the director’s movies.

Be wary we are getting into some stuff in this episode. Johann goes on a google journey that takes him to a few leather bound websites and Matthew remembers stories of his own form of administrative punishment.
We say goodbye to two recruits today who have been with us since the inception of the squad. Punishment is in order for our pal Rico. Administrative Punishment. Matthew finds something about himself that he WON’T be talking to his wife about and Johann digs a little deeper.
We’ve got a mind blowing episode today! Matthew lets us know the reason why the camp is so cramped and laments at the quality of some old shoes. Johann also gets a little nostalgic for some classic styles of the early 2000’s. We then meet a new famous face who has been in a few other Verhoeven movies.
Do you want some goals as a friend? Take a look at Ace. He is kind of a jerk but still very helpful in your time of need. Who else can get you motivated for a fun filled day at the live fire exercise range where no one will get hurt ever. Even the people dangerously close to the flying projectiles.
While this one is shorter than our normal forty minute episodes we learn what Carmen really wants to do with her life and why Ace is such a good friend if not the best friend. Matthew also wonders what would bachelor life would be like and paints a picture of lethargy and video games.
We just got a letter! Wonder who its from? You’ll never guess who decided to give Rico a ring-a-ding. We lament the passing of Mini Disks and Mini CDs but also go over the limitation of the format. Matthew and Johann also discuss Carmen’s current location in orbit around Jupiter.
In this episode we discuss cursing, product placement of a certain breakup company, a little more laser tag, and our unending affection for a certain female protagonist. Again. We also talk a little bit about how the early draft of the script had this minute lasting a few days but was cut to make it a staple of FPS multiplayer matches.
Johann wants Carmen in some kind of pain but Matthew only wants her to be in minor discomfort as the Rodger Young goes into warp. We talk about the ship getting up to 88mph to make the sweet looking temporal distortion and talk tachyons. We also go into a nostalgic tangent about laser tag and how much fun it was.
Matthew talks a little bit too much about space and Johann talks about dinosaurs as a palate cleanser. We also talk a little bit about the movie we are doing a minute podcast on but you’re not here for that are you?
In this episode Johann tells us a tale of possibly buying a 20 year old watch. Matthew reveals his reverence for Hugo Boss’ stylish designs(space nazi) and gets mad(again) at Carmen and Fleet.
This is going to be a long one but you get to know a little bit more about us. In the first half we talk about Captain Deladier and how she had a twin sister in Starship 2. We also go into seating arrangements and meeting running into someone that we already know. The second half is our October/Halloween portion of the show were we discuss our Handshake Horror Five. We go over the five horror/Halloween movies that define us personally. The idea came from The Cabin Cast Minute @CabinMinuteCast who did their Handshakes early in their run. We would love to hear your #HandshakeHorrorFive as well so please use that hashtag or let us know on our facebook group or twitter what your five are!
Matthew is sick this episode but he still goes off on Carmen for her hotdogging though the Lunar Station. Johann gets his licks in as well noticing many different problems with her route though the station core structure. We also theorize that Carmen may be asexual now and only needs to fly very dangerously.
We are once again joined by George Hendricks of The Mogwai Minute to continue talk of Rico’s VOD and discuss the many problems with Carmen and her ‘Race’ with Amy Smart. Matthew gets pretty heated discussing the lack of safety and common sense at this academy while Johann and George talk about baby making. We are once again joined by George Hendricks of The Mogwai Minute to continue the shower scene discussion and talk about Rico’s VOD. We talk about the change from the script that makes this scene even more saucier than it already was and discuss a little bit about on screen butts and food. We’re joined by George Hendricks of The Mogwai Minute for the most talked about and famous scene in this movie. We discuss the rumors and stories behind this scene and talk more about the characters and their stories as they let it all hang out. In this minute we get to one of the many iconic scenes. Knife throwing! Johann has a little insight on how the movie was supposed to go according to the rough draft script we have access too. Parts are changed and moved around. We also talk a bit about how different teaching soldiers is in the ST universe compared to what we know today.
In this one we talk bruises and welts in detail because Johann knows a thing or two about rupturing underlying blood vessels. Dizzy also gets some attention in this minute as she wont be getting any from Rico. We also talk quite a bit about squad bad boy, Ace. Is he a good guy? Is he a bad guy? Is he the best guy? You will find out.
Johann and Matthew discover a little more about each other as they discuss their love for strong women (both build and character) during a short spar between Zim and Dizzy. We also discuss Casper Van Dien’s possible asphyxiation fetish, more medical advancements, and some unknown pink goo.
Johann has gone without hating Carmen for so long he reveals to us his hatred for loved Middle Earth character Tom Bombadil while we talk about the medical advancements of the Starship Troopers universe. Matthew explains why Breckinridge plays idiots in both this movie and Crimson Tide because of his opinion on comic books. We also go talk slightly on our religious upbringing and how it hindered our fandom slightly but that the Dark Lord Satan always wins!
We meet Career Sargent Zim and the other recruits in this minute. Matthew discusses race again cementing the fact that his space nazism has still gone unchecked and tries to do his best impression of Zim and Kitten. Johann discusses when we first saw our first theater boobies and military discipline.
Johann has the first 10 minutes of this episode to gush about one of his favorite actors featured in this minute and honestly I am sold on how awesome Timothy Omundson is. From Deadwood to Psych he is a powerhouse of an actor and only gets a few seconds of screen time in Starship. Is it a shame? You bet. But then we talk about an actor who gets a little more screen time and has done a lot as well. You might recognize his voice from a long running cartoon. We also talk a little about Space Mormons, why they are so prevalent in Sci Fi and why they should check with the neighbors before settling a colony.
Welcome back to the movie. We are done with Carmen for now thank goodness. We get our second Fed Net broadcast featuring two special people! One we get in depth on in the next minute but he does show up for a very quick moment. Johann discusses poop and water lilies and Matthew calls out trained military personnel for endangering children. Maybe.
Chris Bergsma joins us again for a surprise guest spot to wish Carmen off to fleet and complete the trilogy of We Hate Carmen Minute episodes. Will there be more sequels? Probably. We then dive into a bit of movie talk covering Will Ferrell, Gary Cole, William H. Macy and what rolls they would play in Starship.

We are joined by Chris Bergsma of youtube fame again this Friday and we get into Carmen’s severe lack of empathy for Rico. After getting kicked out of his family all she can think or talk about is herself and how much her family will miss her. We also come up with a head canon deleted scene of Rico leaving his house but it doesn’t go as he planned.

Chris Bergsma of Youtube fame joins us again this episode to discuss the only good things about being an extra and spoon feeding words that maybe the common man does not understand. We also go over how a certain bonding scene was shot over forty times and how to guarantee you get the best muffin at the craft table.

We’ve got our first guest in this episode. Longtime friend of Matthew, host of the HomeBrewedHero youtube channel and hater of Carmen – Chris Bergsma. He gives us some valuable insight on Starship and also a very curious batch of beer. Matthew discusses why Rico and everyone in the group would be horrible in the Neo Dog core and Johann calls Matthew out for being a Space Nazi.

We have our second episode of the We Hate Carmen Minute and discuss how Johnny would be justified in being a bit jealous over what Carmen is doing in this minute. Johann makes an amazing discovery two minutes into the podcast that will change him from this day forward. Carmen makes Johnny an offer he can’t refuse but we learn a different outcome in the script.
How about we totally kill the mood by discussing the government again? Too bad. We discuss the only real freedom anyone has anymore in this world and what other freedoms that were taken away. We go over the world of the book a little more as the movie doesn’t fill us in too much about police or how the Federation was formed. We also discuss Carmen actively trying to sabotage what Rico thinks is a relationship the two share. Business as usual I guess.
Well looks like Dizzy is getting shot down by the man she loves. But not to worry a guy who can read minds will fix that broken heart by doing the best dance in the world! Johann and Matthew discuss the possibility of a friend zone existing but only for Dizzy because Rico most definitely puts her in his friend zone. Matthew discusses the binary emotions of Mr. Ironside.
We told you everyone was coming to the dance tonight so we’re glad you showed up! We talk about the singer in this minute, Zoe Poledouris. Matthew creeps out Johann with a little known fact about Zoe’s writing credits and Johann creeps us out with his love of John Waters’ mustache. We also gush over Dizzy again for being a major babe and a prime draft pick for Jumpball.
Does a lush jungle planet with white sand beaches and drinks with little umbrellas in them sound nice? Why don’t you take a trip with us to Zegema Beach? Rico’s dad is promising us a trip all expenses paid. Just watch out for the neighbors. In this episode we talk about The Roughnecks: Starship Trooper Chronicles and why movie Rico may have been pushed to follow his dad in career choice.
Whoa do we go long on this one so strap in Troopers. We go from speculating that the Buenos Aries high schools are like Hogwarts Houses to dipping our toe into the 1988 Starship Trooper anime and a little other anime action. Matthew gushes over a possible purchase of a 1989 model kit and Johann gets Scottish and Irish accents confused when talking about Cho Chang.
Episode 12A Minute 12. I have come across a small problem in how I labeled these podcast episodes. The trailercast should have been episode 0 to make it easier on how the minutes flow but from now on they will also represent the minute as well as the title.
We have more Jumpball this minute and Johann and I cannot think of simple words but hey when you go over a movie one minute at a time some things just get pushed out. I also get to try out our censor beep for the first time so thats fun! Hope you enjoy the cast.
We hate Carmen. We also talk about the rules of Jumpball and how to break those rules. Matthew goes off on a tangent about video games as he always does and Johann goes over a few points about the last few minutes because we’ve found new notes in the original script. Have we mentioned that we hate Carmen?
Do poop jokes ever get old? The answer is no. Never. You’ll see why soon in this episode as we talk about how Carl’s pet could have been a big yellow turd. We also talk about Jumpball and the new antagonist in the movie that doesn’t have eight legs.
We’ve got the first two deleted scenes for this movie and they give us a little more backstory on Carmen and Johnny’s relationship while getting a bit touchy. Matthew decides Starship Troopers is stupid, starts his new podcast called ‘The Jennifer Connelly Minute’, and professes his love for said actress. Johann tells us the difference between luck and chance and how Rico is just a dumb sack of rocks.
Do you have the stomach for a bit of dissection? Well if not don’t worry as we go into the VFX of this next minute and talk about evolution of the arachnids. Johann and Matthew also decide to take a trip to Hollywood to purchase something HAZARDOUSLY SLIPPERY.
Today’s episode we discuss Rico’s thirst but he isn’t dehydrated at all and in all honestly the two hosts may be a bit parched as well but not for who Rico is thirsty for! Johann may have a thing for a certain frizzy haired schoolgirl and Matthew happens to like an older southern bell who will be showing us the proper way to get into some literal guts.
In this episode we dive a little more into the differences between the script and the finished product of the film. Johann discusses how he could have possibly become an Admiral in the US Navy and how he hated showing his work while Matthew talks about other Sci-Fi books besides Starship Troopers.
In this episode we continue the discussion about the government of Starship Troopers and the very obvious caste that exist between Citizens and Civilians. But then some dope gets shot down via AIM and watches a couple make out.
In this episode we get into the world building of the movie and discuss the government of the Starship Troopers universe. Oh and we talk about amputation. Take a seat kids we're getting educational on yo butts!
In this episode we say goodbye to a correspondent, say hello to Jake Busey’s grunt, and see if we can’t get something out of Casper Van Dien’s leg.
Minute two has us deep in the Arachnid Quarantine Zone of this Fed Net broadcast. We discuss strange defense measures, movement of ships and other things in space, and Matthew has an idea for a movie he’d like to pitch.
The first minute of this movie and we are going in hot! We talk about Verhoeven's possible influence on YouTube, Federal clones, the return of child soldiers to the battlefield, and an overcooked baked potato.
Here we go! The first episode of the podcast going over the trailer for Starship Troopers and introducing ourselves and a bit about the film's director Paul Verhoeven.
