We’re talking about friendship and professionalism on the podcast today. Do you make, or try to make, life-long friendships on projects? Do you try to keep your archaeology life and personal life separate? What about being friends with your employees, bosses, or subordinates? These are all concerns that people have and we relate our experiences on this episode.

Peer review is defined as “a process of subjecting an author’s scholarly work, research or ideas to the scrutiny of others who are experts in the same field”. Like the academic world, peer reviews in CRM are intended to ensure high quality research and to improve the quality of reports; they are also intended to ensure proper regulatory application and compliance. However, peer reviews are at times used for nefarious purposes' this is having a negative impact on the effectiveness of the process. Today’s podcast explores how peer reviews are being employed in CRM and what can be done to get back to the original intent.

That's right. Winter IS coming. The winter of 2022/2023 but also the "winter" of your career. If you look at a CRMArch career as a single year, at some point you'll be at the end of that year/career. Are you prepared for either? On this episode we talk about preparing for the winter. Should you work? Do you have to? How much money do you need to live? And much more.

The Archaeology Podcast Network is taking a bit of a break for October, 2022. In the mean time, we’re introducing you to some of the other fantastic shows that we produce. Here’s an episode from The Archaeology Show featuring a DOT archaeologist and a really important site found through CRM.
This week we interview Jason Cooper, an archaeologist with the Washington DOT, the current president of the Association for Washington Archaeology, and former archaeologist with the environmental firm, AMEC. In 2008 we were lucky enough to work on an Olcott excavation with Jason, and now he has co-written a book about those findings. We discuss the significance of the Olcott tradition in Washington, as well as how our findings on the CRM project in 2008 contributed to our knowledge of the Olcott people.

It’s all LIDAR today! Paul and Chris interview Dr. Sarah Klassen, an archaeologist that has done extensive work in southeast Asia, specifically Cambodia. She’s got some fascinating things to say about what the LIDAR data told them about the past at Ankor Wat and other temples, and, about new questions the data presented.

A field school is usually required to get a job in Cultural Resources Management. A lot of professionals went to a field school that filled an interested and didn't really prepare them for a career in CRM. There are a few CRM field schools out there and another is starting in May of 2022. The Center for American Archaeology has created a four-week program of intense study and on today's episode, we talk to one of the directors of the program, Dr. Jason King. Field School Description APPLIED ARCHAEOLOGY FOR CRM CAREERS (CRMFS) is a four-week, intensive field school experience designed to provide students with job-ready skills to enter the workforce as archaeological field technicians at the Cultural Resource Management (CRM) industry. Students will learn key skills necessary for CRM jobs, including survey, surface collection, shovel-testing, excavation, laboratory techniques, relevant laws, and reporting. Students will learn the entire process of CRM practices, from data collection to data reporting and mitigation. Practical field and laboratory activities are supplemented by relevant readings and formal lectures. About Dr. Jason King Dr. Jason L King is the Executive Director of the Center for American Archeology in Kampsville, IL. He earned his BA from the University of South Carolina and MA and PhD from the University of New Mexico. Since 2001 he has directed CAA fieldwork & field schools at several Lower Illinois Valley sites, including Mound House, Golden Eagle, Kampsville Lock, and German sites. His primary research interests focus on the formation and maintenance of social groups during the Woodland period. We’ve all seen other archaeologists use strange tools that are not part of any normal recommendation list. Sometimes they are just odd, but other times turn out to be incredibly useful. What are these tools that we have seen? How were they used? We’re they so good that you bought one for yourself, or so weird that you just chalked it up to another wacky story from the field? Maggie Barry didn't even know what CRM Archaeology was when she was in college at the University of Davis. Upon graduation with a degree in American Studies and a focus on Culture and Consumption, Maggie joined the Peace Corps and spent over two years in Botswana. When she came home she hiked the Pacific Crest Trail - a 2000+ hike along the west coast of the United States. She landed a few jobs in CRM some time later and is still working as an archaeologist. We talk to Maggie about her journey, what it taught her, and what it can teach others about their path to this unique lifestyle. There has been quite a bit of talk on social media recently centering on pay scales for archaeologists and how the average rate should be/can be increased to meet a threshold that is livable and commensurate with experience and skills. There are some that assume that upper management is out to cheat the average arch tech. Although that may be true in some cases, the subject is much more complex than just an arbitrary decision or pay. The only way to improve the current climate with respect to pay is to understand the driving forces behind pay rates. Understanding the nuances may not only improve your chances of being paid more, it will improve your overall professional well-being. We discuss three different short topics on today's episode. Starting with the comments on a Facebook post regarding episode 212 we talk about the importance of reading an article or listening to a podcast before responding to a clip or the title of the social post. Next we discuss a listener suggestion about how to deal with people that came up in this industry in more difficult times and thinks you should too. The 2020 field season was largely shortened by COVID - field schools were almost completely shut down. Even though we all played along like 2021 was going to be different, it looks like many field schools are already canceled. While this is happening CRM firms are demanding that university programs train students to know what CRM firms want them to know. The answer is obvious: CRM firms should train students in CRM though internships and partner programs. This week...on the CRM Archaeology Podcast. ENCORE (Original release: Sept 14, 2016) In early August we created a survey that was placed on Facebook and it was titled "99 Problems". Grey literature is the term for CRM reports that languish behind restrictions in agency file cabinets. How do we change that? Today's episode is in response to a listener question in which the listener asked why we continue to do CRM even though we always talk about the hardships. What drives you? Is it a passion for history? A love of the outdoors? What drives you to settle for low per diem, bad pay, no benefits, and double-occupancy hotel room? Let us know in the comments. Listener question: From James at NASA...As to what I would like to hear in CRM, as a member of the public, I would like to understand more of the reason people continue to work in the field despite the hardships. I mean, is there knowledge before they get a degree that this is hard when they do the field work? What is the dropout rate? Is it just in people’s blood to do this, like sailors who need to be on the ocean despite the risk? Also, fundamentally, is CRM just trying to meet regulations (do a job and get paid) or is it actually resulting in stopping/relocating the ventures that initiated them (highway, shopping mall, homes)? Today, the CRM Archaeology Podcast has the distinct honor of having as our guest cohost, Dr. Thomas King. Dr. King has been a giant in the field of heritage and cultural resource management for over 50 years and has not only been responsible for the education of countless students of CRM through his prolific authorship, but has had a hand in many of the laws and regulations we as CRM practitioners exercise everyday. Notably, Dr. King and his wife, Dr. Patricia Parker, while employed by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation in Washington DC from 1979-1989, wrote the National Register Bulletin 38, which has served as a U.S. government guideline document employed by many indigenous groups and local communities to protect their cultural heritage from destructive government projects. Dr. King's most recent book, Cultural Resource Management: A Collaborative Primer for Archaeologists, is an elegant and concise introduction to CRM aimed at emerging archaeologists. Although, it could be argued, since we should all be continuous students of all aspects of this discipline, that this book is an essential pocket guide to any level of archaeologist who respects the interdisciplinary and public policy elements of CRM. Masterminds - are they right for CRM? A mastermind group is a group of people that help each other learn and grow. The most beneficial groups have a cost because paying for it makes you attend. What Chris Webster proposes is an affordable mastermind series in four levels that will help advance anyone in the group. From tents to hotel rooms CRM Archaeologists have seen it all when it comes to lodging. We sleep in our cars, double up in rented houses, and try to rack up those hotel points when we can. For the last few years, though, a new player had been shaking things up. With AirBnB anyone can rent out some or all of their residence and for archaeologists working on small town with few lodging options, this can be a real game changer for quality of life. On today's show we talk about the AirBnB trend and what it means for archaeology. LinksThe Points GuyHotels.comAirBnBFollow Our Panelists On Twitter

We often hear of companies in the field of CRM Archaeology skimping on things like ice and water in for field crews. Many of us have been, or are at, a job that just wasn't the right fit. Why did we stay? Why didn't we just leave and get another job? The answer is usually that we were trapped by security. The words "trapped" and "security", however, have different meanings to different people. We talk about all that on this week's episode. Visit Our Sponsor: Oakum Solutions

On today’s show we talk about preservation and conservation in the context of cities of the future. Where are all the old buildings in the architectural drawings and artist’s conceptions of the future? Where’s the old post office, hotel, or city building? Even in science fiction the cities of the future are ultra modern with no ties to the past. Is that OK? Or, should we be thinking about how our past and present tie into our future? Using criteria from the National Park Service and other sources archaeologists are tasked to determine an archaeological resource's eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. This isn't so easy sometimes and we have criteria and integrity considerations to look at. This episode is a discussion of that process and the issues that come up when trying to do it.
In some areas of the country archaeologists are monitoring for construction projects. That’s not unique. What is unique is that some of these archaeologists are monitoring for years at a time and they’re losing their skills. We talk about that, and, mental health issues in contract archaeology.
A few APN hosts and a guest joined together at the 2019 Society for American Archaeology meetings in New Mexico to talk about the issues that took place at the meeting, the SAA response, and how we can all do better.
Host Bill Auchter went to the 2019 MAAC and he brought his microphone! Listen to some great interviews from a diverse crowd and learn all about the people and the archaeology of the Mid-Atlantic region.
Get a job! It’s time to start working. Archaeologists are coming off a long winter and summer is around the corner. You need a job and we’ll help you get there.
In this episode we speak with Lewis Borck about his article "Constructing the Future History: Prefiguration as Historical Epistemology and the Chronopolitics of Archaeology" and how it applies to CRM archaeology as we practice it.
We’ve got two very different guests on the show today. The first is Seth Hymes. Seth runs a digital marketing online course and we’ve partnered with him to get CRM Archaeologists a little bit of a side career. Take the course, make a little extra money, and have something to do in the off season. Our second guest is Karry Blake. She’s a CRM professional, runs an environmental department, and is raising two kids the entire time. We talk about the challenges of raising kids while managing your career.
There is a Bill going before Congress today, February 13th, 2019 regarding setting up an African-American Burial Grounds Network within the National Park Service. Below in the links are the summary document and the actual bill.
For the last six year's we've been podcasting about the field of CRM Archaeology. We've had our ups and downs, just like the industry, but through it all we've continued to bring you awesome topics, great interviews, and educated commentary. Thanks for the past six years and here's to another six!
The fourth quarter, 2018, grievance statistics are out and they're a bit shocking. We talk about how to file a grievance and why you should file a grievance. We also talk about moving across the country for work. Is it worth it? What's more important - length of the job or the money? There are many factors that you have to look at and we try to help you navigate the decision matrix and get the best bang for your buck.
The Society for Historical Archaeology conference was held in St. Charles, Missouri this year (2019) and despite the 15 inches of snow, the government shutdown, and a fire in the terminal at St. Louis International, the conference went pretty well! Bill White and Chris Webster sit down with two women that started a Facebook group to be a safe place for people that are victims of the #metoo phenomenon and the talk to each other about other things they saw at the conference.
Whether we're talking about a single archaeology project or the industry as a whole, we're always worried about working ourselves out of work. What does that mean? Well, we talk about it on today's episode. To help counter this, though, check out our sponsors, Wildnote and Team Black.
Well, 2018 is coming to a close and it’s given us some real gems to consider. Aside from ACTRESS Megan Fox thinking she knows anything about archaeology we also have rogue robots and out-of-control AI. But there were some good things this year. Join Chris, Bill, and Bill for this 2018 wrap-up.
Dr. Bill White, long-time host of this show, talks to us about historical archaeology. What is historical archaeology? When does it start in the United States? When does it end? What are some of the biggest questions in historic archaeology? Also, what's going historic in 2019 as a result of the 50-year-rule. These questions and more on the 152nd running of the CRM Archaeology Podcast.
Every so often Chris Webster and Richie Cruz, both archaeologists, broadcast live on the APN Facebook page. It's a show called "You Call This Archaeology?" We talk about archaeology and many other things. Instead of our normal show we bring you the 49th recording of YCTA. Enjoy, and, like our Facebook page so you'll know when we go live again.
Almost everyone will admit that leadership training and practices are badly needed, and are in fact missing, within Cultural Resource Management. We need all the help we can get! Vishal Agarwal, author of “Give to Get” talks to us about leadership and navigating through work environments.
H.P. Lovecraft wrote many stories. I bet he never thought about archaeology while he was writing them. Well, we did. Here's another random encounters episode where we roll the dice and pair archaeology with horror. It'll be a wild ride where we talk about field stories, racism, and more.
Sarah Herr joins us to discuss synthesis in CRM and the Coalition for Archaeological Synthesis.
Bill Auchter joins Bill and Stephen again for another round of the random encounters game. This time we're switching genres to do a cyberpunk-themed episode.
Going digital is, in Chris’ opinion, a morale and ethical imperative. We are the stewards of other people’s history and it’s our job to ensure their data are secure for as long as it takes.
It's a bit of a different show today. Chris talks about Team Black and what it's hoping to do for archaeology. From resources to webinars, there is a lot over there. The last half of this shorter episode is an example of a Team Black Webinar on getting a job in archaeology.
Sonia and Chris start the episode by discussing something we saw on Facebook - which is something no one should do! Anyway, should archaeologists get per diem on the weekends on long term projects? We have our opinions. We spend the rest of the episode talking about the rough fire season in the western U.S. and how to deal with smoke and fire's effects on archaeology.
From academic positions to field positions to contracts archaeologists find themselves in a race to the bottom competing with each other in an already strapped industry. Why does this happen and how can we fix it? We toss out some of our ideas on this episode.
Is it possible? Can a universal site form really cover all sites? Stephen, Doug, and Chris discuss the possibilities, problems, and practicality of this idea. Tell us what you think!
Everyone see preservation differently. Is excavation preservation? Is saving the data preservation? Is not doing anything at all preservation? What does it mean to you? On today's episode we explore this topic and giver our own opinions on what preservation means to us.
We started today's show talking about drive time again but with a couple different hosts - Sonia and Doug. But, it's really a discussion about employee welfare and how to craft company policy so that it doesn't damage that. Is it possible? Should companies do it? There are some differing opinions and we're interested in yours.
Drive time is always a hot-button issue in contract archaeology. Should you be paid going from the office to the town the work is in? Should you be paid if you take your own car? What about driving from your home to a local field project 30 min away? Should you be paid for that? We talk about these scenarios and more on today's episode. Please send us your feedback and opinions.
Other industries around the world record, either audio or video, presentations from conferences and at least make them available to their members or to those that bought a "virtual ticket". Archaeology is notably behind the curve on this but through the efforts of Doug Rocks-Macqueen and others we're getting there. On today's show we discuss the challenges and ethics behind recording and making available conference presentations.
That's right - adulting (Stephen's favorite word!). On this show, we talk about setting up advance directives, disability insurance, life insurance, and some other things you really should be doing. We end the show with a few clips from the 2018 Society for American Archaeology conference in Washington, D.C.
Chris and Bill attended the 2018 Northwest Anthropological Association conference in Boise, Idaho in March 2018. They talk about what they saw and what they learned. Also, Chris, Doug, and Bill talk about archaeologists as curators. What should we keep? What should we give to curation facilities? What should be digitally recorded and who should store it?
Stephen Wagner guest hosts this week's show and is joined by Doug Rocks-Macqueen and special guest Bill Auchter. Bill rolls the dice on a DnD-style random encounters table that Stephen has matched to topics in archaeology. They roll the dice for each new topic and come up with a great show. Here's what's discussed:
- Dragon's Hoard: Curation - Sunset: The end of the road for projects and documents - Sequestered Monks: Published Materials - Geomancer: Spatial Data - The Gorgon: Permanence and your archaeological career
On today's episode we play some recordings from the 2018 Society for California Archaeology Meetings in San Diego, CA in March. It's a hodge-podge of stuff but I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
Can a bunch of archaeologists agree on what are the five stages of a biface and what attributes are the most essential to record? Listen and find out.
Spring is around the corner, which means the start of another field season. What advice can our panelist give about choosing a field school? What experience can a recent graduate bring to the table that will jumpstart their archaeology career? Listen and find out. For the seasoned field tech, the panel offers up ways to brush up your resume and freshen up your on-line presence for potential employers.
Today Bill, Sonia, and Doug tell us how they've managed tech in the field without power. It can be tricky, but, you can do it. In the end, whatever you have to do is better than wasting time on paper.
The 2018 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology took place in New Orleans at the beginning of January. Bill White was there and he brings on two coleagues, Dr. Ayana Flewellen and Dr. Justin Dunnavant. They talk about their takeaways from the conference. Bill, Ayana, and Justin also talk about their work in St. Croix over the winter and about working in an area deeply affected by hurricanes and a lack of people to do preservation work. However, they mention that people on the island are working in their own communities to preserve there history.
A career in CRM isn't straight forward like other careers. Often, if you want to keep doing it, especially in the early years, having a side-hustle, or, other way to make money and learn, is important. On today's episode we talk to archaeologist Richie Cruz about his early side-hustle and his new side-hustle. Take a listen, learn, and start your own side-hustle.
On today's episode, we have guest Ryan Howell, an archaeologist that lives and works in the upper midwest. He's concerned with the situation regarding the move of the Minnesota SHPO from the Historical Society to the State Admin offices. We talk about that, and, unionizing in CRM. What would it do for us and is it possible?
The State Historic Preservation Officer for each state and territory of the United States is a key part of the regulatory and preservation process. But, what would a state do without a SHPO? We discuss that hypothesis on today's show. We also talk about identifying CRM Archaeology as, well, CRM Archaeology. Why not just CRM? Why not something else?
Jolene Smith and Kelsey Noack Myers join us to discuss site forms, databases, DINAA, and the recent site impact study using data from DINAA.
On this episode, Stephen tells us about the Chacmool conference that took place in Canada this Fall. That leads to a discussion about First Nations people and the lack of diversity in archaeology. Which leads to talk of college and a lack of diversity in collegiate studies. Much of that discussion is in the Bonus content on our member site.
The iPhone X is out. Is it right for you? Good for fieldwork? This brief review of the iPhone X and other technology should help you make that decision. We also talk about the #metoo issue from a male perspective. Hopefully we spoke intelligently and respectfully. That was the intent. Finally, should PhDs feel bad for choosing a career in CRM rather than academia? No! Own it and do it.
New in the field and wonder what the difference is between a project manager and a field director? What about "Scientist II"? What does that mean? We talk about the different positions in field archaeology and get into some philosophy regarding staying put or moving up.
Winter is coming, as it does every year, for archaeology and archaeologists. What can you do to plan for the winter? Not just work, but, NOT working. How do you plan your finances? Where can you work throughout the winter? What can YOU do to be proactive about your career?
Ever wonder why you get paid a fraction of what your employer charges the client for you? Well, there's a reason for that and it's a tool that companies use to win work, make a profit, and keep you employed.
Low balling is the practice of intentionally bidding low to win a project. It has a massive stigma in the CRM world, but, can it be used for good? Is it always a bad idea or are there times when low balling can be a sound, effective strategy? We dive into this topic on today's episode with business owner Sonia Hutmacher and long-time project manager, Bill White.
Website stuck in the 90's? Don't know how to properly share information online? Check out Archaeological Analytics and the services they provide. A website can help with image and the ability for clients to find you. Proper sharing online can establish you or your firm as an expert and increase your presence with the public and potential clients.
On today's show, we talk about the horrors that took place in Charlottesville, Virginia on August 12, 2017. The question on everyone's minds was what to do about statues and iconography related to hate, bigotry, and a significant and changing period in our nation's history. How do we, as archaeologists deal with it?
On today's episode, Bill White talks about his upcoming job at Berkeley as a professor. What should he teach? What should any college teach? What can you learn and what should you learn? Lots to unpack in this episode. Enjoy.
On today's show we have a special guest host and a special guest to talk about mining in the CRM industry. Richie Cruz is back to co-host and Jenny Hildebrand is here to tell us all about mining in archaeology. What do you need to know to work on mines in the west? What special equipment do you need? What will you find, and, what resources are out there to help you? All this and more on today's episode.
On today's episode, we interview John Welch from Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada. He talks about their new online MA program that can help you level-up your education and your career and invest in yourself. Applications are open until early August, 2017!
Today on the podcast Richie Cruz, Stephen Wagner, and Chris Webster discuss a blog post that Chris wrote over four years about about collecting "arrowheads" and why you shouldn't do it. We talk about the importance of context and give some ways for you, as an archaeologist, to talk about your fiends and family about collecting.
On today's episode, Sonia, Bill, and Chris talk about subcontracting. More to the point, they talk about making the decision to be a subcontractor or start your own firm with employees. What are the costs and benefits of each decision? What did the three co-hosts do? Learn from our mistakes and our successes before you make your own decision.
On today's episode we talk about the current issues around Bears Ears National Monument - our newest one here in the U.S. The government is holding a review of all national monuments designated in the past few decades and Bears Ears could be on the chopping block soon. We talk about that AND what you can do about that and other environmental issues.
Today's show is a joint episode from the Archaeology Show and the CRM Archaeology Podcast. We talk to Dr. Steven Holen, the primary author on a letter in Nature at the end of April, 2017 detailing a site from San Diego, CA with an apparent 130,000 year old archaeological site. It's a controversial find and we try to get into the science and figure out what's going on and where we go from here.
The crew answer listener emails, and respond to comments on recent episodes, as well as talk about how to get a job in CRM and what to expect from a day in the life of a CRMer.
Chris Sims sits down with Bill Auchter at SAA2017 to talk about telecommunications archaeology. Auchter is putting out a call for papers to join a session on telecommunications archaeology at SAA2018. Listen to this episode for his 30,000-foot perspective on a potentially dying industry, and contribute to the discourse on this often-diminished area of the CRM industry.
Bill White, Chris Webster, and Chris Sims field some questions from a listener email and talk about the ins and outs of navigating careers in CRM and academia. Listener questions are always welcome!
This is a special extended discussion that we had to cut from Episode 106 of the CRM Archaeology Podcast. The panel voices some frustration with establishing careers in archaeology and the gaps between classrooms and careers, which are difficult to navigate.
The whole crew is back to follow up on the big labor and management issues plaguing the CRM industry.
The crew talks about labor issues in CRM archaeology on this episode. Some of the topics include side hustle, quitting CRM, and financial planning.
The crew talks about different experiences and perspectives on the phenomenon of "drive-thru masters" programs - the fast-track MAs that are being marketed as a means to level up your career in CRM.
On today's show we talk about burning bridges. Chris Webster received a letter from someone that he clearly wronged in the past and we talk about the ramifications of doing something like that. What bridges should be burned? Is it ever OK? Also, professionalism. What does it mean to CRM Archaeologists? That and more on today's episode.
Chris Webster and Bill White recap their experiences and insights from the Society for Historical (and Underwater) Archaeology meeting in Ft. Worth, Texas. They discuss the balance of terrestrial and underwater archaeology, as represented in presentations at the conference, as well as the role of the Society of Black Archaeologists (SBA). Bill talks about the crossover of SHA and SBA as he trains to dive on a slave ship site in St. Croix.
The crew talks about the standards that determine what's eligible for an archaeological site. Is 100 years enough? Is 50? Are the guidelines doing what they're supposed to do?
On today's show we talk about the past 100 episodes. Where did we start, what have we done, and where are we going. It's been a wild ride and we couldn't have done it without the support of our listeners! Thanks for being there - thanks for the kind words via email and at conferences - and thanks for giving us a reason to keep doing this.
On today's episode we bring on Tom King, Colorado SHPO Holly Norton, and guest host Michael Ashley of Codifi to talk about the likely changes to environmental policy in the Trump Administration. It's an interesting and terrifying conversation and we welcome comment.
The Center for Digital Archaeology held an office hours session following the video that ACRA posted regarding their position on environmental regulation in the Trump Administration. The office hours was open to anyone and was a great discussion. Below are a few links from the recording, including a Google Doc from the recording.
THIS IS A TRIGGER WARNING: During the last 10 minutes of this podcast we will be discussing some field situations that may be disturbing, even traumatizing, to some people. If you feel the need to step away during part of this discussion, either for a short time or for the remainder of the podcast, feel free to do so. Today the crew tackles a heavy subject: substance abuse and addiction in archaeology. It’s a problem in CRM archaeology for legal, behavioral, and performance issues. We discuss factors that lead to alcohol and drug abuse, and suggest supportive behavior.
The crew is joined by Rich Grove, a professor in the UK, who explains what A-Levels are (for those of us in the States) and why cutting the archaeology A-Levels is raising such a stink across the pond. We also talk about social media policies for employers, why they matter, and issues surrounding sharing archaeology online.
Today's show is a live recording from the 35th Great Basin Anthropological Conference held in early October in Reno, Nevada. From the podcast, we have Chris Sims, Sonia Hutmacher, Bill White, and Chris Webster. We have Michael Ashley, founder of Codifi, as a special guest as well. We talk about our experiences at the conference and about diversity and racism, as they relate to Bill's GBAC presentation.
On today's episode we talk to the founder of ArcTech Logistics - a company that contracts field technicians to other companies. We ask Shawn Webb how they're able to do that, how they manage costs, and other questions about this interesting business.
On today's show we talk about the laws and regulations regarding the Dakota Access Pipeline. None of us have had anything to do with that project and we're discussing it using publicly available information. As such, we're not commenting on the ethical and cultural issues, necessarily, just the legal ones. What would we do in a case where we were handed a large project like this? How would we handle it?
In early August we created a survey that was placed on Facebook and it was titled "99 Problems". Based on recent and ongoing conversations on Facebook regarding issues with people that work in CRM Archaeology, the survey was designed to find out what those problems actually are and what we can do about them. On this episode, the hosts discuss the results. Your thoughts are appreciated in the comments.
Today Bill White guest-hosts the show for me while I'm away in Italy and gets a real treat. On the show, Bill, Sonia, and Doug interviewed several people from Adventures in Preservation and the Fairfield Foundation. Find out how they're engaging the community in actual archaeology and preservation work. This might be your next vacation!
On today's episode we bring on two Wisconsin archaeologists to talk about the proposed AB620 bill that will basically allow land owners to test mounds for human remains and de-list them from the Wisconsin Historical Society's list if there are none found. Then, they will likely be able to destroy them. It's an important issue for Wisconsin and the entire mid-west, or, anywhere with a similar problem. Please comment below if you have some input on this issue.
We constantly see on Facebook and other social media that field techs are unhappy with the business of CRM. Is it the crew chiefs, the project managers, or the companies that are making them upset? In reality, not really. It's a lack of understanding about the big picture. Once you realize that no one really has any control you then start to see how to REALLY fix the problem.
Our show is a little bit different today. The panel interviews CRM and Army Corps archaeologist Joe Griffin. Joe recently completed a 1-month tour in Laos to recover the remains of a lost serviceman. The government has an entire program dedicated to this mission and we felt it was a good topic to bring to you, our listeners. We hope you enjoy.
Today we talk about how archaeological site recording has been tied to the site for for decades now. How do we go back to recording sites in a scientific way and not in a way the requires us to put all our data into predefined boxes? There are some very different opinions and we'd like to know your too. We also talk about the concept of free archaeology, or, working after work hours or over. Whether you're salaried or hourly we've all had to do it.
On today's show, Bill, Doug, and Chris W. talk about health and safety. We've got some stories of extreme heat, alligators, mosquitoes, and more. Comment below with your tales of health and safety!
For today's episode we intended to just give a brief update to Episode 85 where we received some good comments from the post on Archaeo Field Techs on Facebook. We ended up spending the hour on this topic and we're glad we did. Enjoy.
On today's show, Doug, Bill, and Chris talk about the new jobs board on the PCS website and what it means for CRM Archaeology. We also talk about email and how it should be used when you're looking for your next job. Finally, we discuss the new overtime laws signed in by the Obama Administration last week. The new law takes affect on December 1, 2016 and you'd better understand it well before then.
The PCS website is live with this podcast. What is PCS? Who created it? What are their long term goals? From jobs to certifications, PCS aims to be a force for good in a field that could use some good news and good ideas.
On today's episode, the panel discusses the major differences between getting a job, working for, and moving up in small and large CRM firms. There is a lot to unpack in this episode and we tackle it in three segments. We're also debuting the first segment of the Heritage Business Tip from Christopher Dore at Heritage Business International. Look for it between the second and third segments.
On today's episode we talk about degree inflation and the backlash from Bill's blog post about NOT hiring people with graduate degrees as field techs. What do you think? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
On today's episode we take a deep dive into the results of the survey we mentioned at the end of Episode 80. Charlie Peliska, the survey's author, joins us for the third segment, which is a longer segment than usual.
On today's show we talk about burning out. Or rather, how not to burn out. We also talk about what it means to be an archaeologist. How do we define it? Finally, we touch on the Charlie Peliska survey currently making the rounds on social media. We devote an entire episode to it next time, but for now we just touch on it.
On today's episode, Chris rambles on about three wildly different topics. First, reasons why you should go to the SAAs in Disneyworld, despite the fact that it's Disneyworld. Second, the APN and all it's neediness. Finally, looting. Is it really that bad, or, is it a matter of perspective?
On this episode Bill and Ashley talk about what the saw and learned at the 2016 Society for Historical Archaeology Annual Meeting held in January in Washington D.C. The second segment is an interview segment that Bill recorded at the meetings.
KEEP LISTENING!! Just because we're talking theory doesn't mean this isn't worth listening too! Seriously, though, we have a great discussion about theory and it's use in CRM Archaeology. Do we need theory? Do we use theory? What theories do we use? What should we use? This and more on today's episode.
On today's episode, Chris Sims, Doug Rocks-Macqueen, Stephen Wagner, and Bill White talk about the "Grand Challenges" in archaeology. This is a companion episode to the blog carnival of the same name taking place over at Doug's Archaeology. What do you think the grand challenges of archaeology are? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
On today's episode we talk to one current and one former archaeologist that are both religious and balancing religion and archaeology. One was a former SHPO and one is a Nun. I've always wondered how someone can reconcile religious beliefs with a field that seems to actively refute much of what's in the bible and other religious texts. We tackle those questions and more on this week's episode.
This is a companion podcast to Bill White's blog post of a similar title. Should archaeologists, more precisely, Field Techs, marry each other? Perhaps our answers are different from yours, perhaps not. We do have some collective experience in this area. Let us know what you think in the comments.
On today's episode we discuss large project management. It's not as straight forward as you might think and it's not the same as grabbing a couple shovels and knocking out a quick survey. This is a complicated undertaking and our co-hosts have managed many large projects.
On today's show we bring on three fitness experts to talk about why you should be doing a workout after work and what that will do for your quality of life. This doesn't mean you can't still have a few beers, but, it means you'll be healthier for a longer period of time and you won't feel like you want to die after an 17+ mile hike like I did they other day!
On today's show, Chris Sims, Bill White, and I talk to Dr. Randy McGuire, a professor with Binghamton University's MA in Public Anthropology. This is intended to be essentially a CRM graduate degree and it sounds pretty solid. There is even a way to break into Southwestern Archaeology through this program. Listen in and tell us what you think.Q
On today's episode we turn two listener questions into toolbox features! The first question is about getting a degree in Anthropology and the second is about how to prepare for interviews. Stephen has a great discussion about the importance of having a good reference.
On today's show we interview British archaeologist and author, Francis Pryor. Francis is best known for his archaeological work in Britain and his discovery of Flag Fen. He was also a frequent participant in the long-running Time Team series in Britain. Francis talks to us about his upcoming, crowd-sourced, archaeological fiction book and the crowd-funding process that his publisher, Unbound, uses in general.
On today's show we talk to Patricia Martz and Sylvere Valentin of the California Cultural Resources Protection Alliance (CCRPA). The CCRPA is a preservation group based out of Orange County, California.
