Contemplating life one breath at a time, The Stress Dojo transforms stress into strength and kicks a little ass along the way.
More ideas on how to shift your relationship to anxiety and fear as well as emotional discomfort in general are on the plate for today's episode. I mention another podcast from Buddhist teacher Jack Kornfield. Here's the link for that:
https://beherenownetwork.com/jack-kornfield-heart-wisdom-ep-92-stories-that-open-the-mind-mend-the-heart-and-lead-to-joy/
In this episode I flip the script on anxiety (fear) so you can see it's just a biological function and not a scary drama monster. It's actually here to help. Let's open the door on anxiety and get some fresh air up in here.
Playing a quick catch up on this episode letting you know that EMDR is now part of the therapy offered in my private pracitce. I talk some of what EMDR is and what it's used for. I talk about links to my sliding scale therapist directory listing here: http://bit.ly/sliding-scale

Forgiving is not forgetting. It’s remembering without anger. Easy to say, not as easy to do. We are not normally set up to forgive until we've milked the situation for all it's pain and drama and sometimes not even then. But maybe, if the seed is planted, we can all get to it a little bit faster. Forgiveness really is an inside job.

A rambly episode on treating yourself with compassion as the only sustainable way forward in life. I use the example of my struggles with weight but it can be any place we feel broken or defective. Be compassionate with yourself to turn your pain into purpose.
Following the theme of what I'd like to tell my 16 year old self if I could, I talk this episode about watering the seed of curiosity. Yes, I use more Indigo Girl's lyrics. In fact here's the link to the song Closer to Fine that I use in this episode:

I mention an Indigo Girls song from the album Rites of Passage in the episode. The song is called Virginia Woolf and here's a link to it on YouTube so you can have a listen:

Today’s episode is one long answer to listener mail in which I talk about the ideas of life being messy and beautiful (wabi sabi) and continuous improvement (kaizen).

Today I'm talking about the last mindset shift for the new year. I'm focused in on the choice of excellence rather than the fixed and stagnate idea of perfection. Life doesn't fit into nice little boxes so will you choose to go through it joyfully or in perpetual misery?
In listener mail I look at how to practice mindfulness when you have anxiety.

This episode is about the dance between Sustainability and Security. One is fixed and doesn't honor the constant movement of life while the other allows you to breathe, rest, and deal with life as it comes. I'll let you guess which is which. :) In listener mail, I look at dealing with anxiety and stress first thing in the morning.
The blog posts for all the mindset shift topics are on the blog at https://thestressdojo.com/blog/ and the poem The Invitation is here http://www.oriahmountaindreamer.com/
In listener mail I talk about the question of eliminating stress and anxiety altogether. The rest of the episode is all about the mindset shift from balance to harmony and making it more sustainable...and less stressful.
Talking today about shifting how we look at obstacles and challenges. If we treat them as monsters, they evoke fear. If we treat them as puzzles, they evoke curiosity and creativity. Which do you want more of?
I'm talking about new year's goals today and I'm telling real ass stories about my life to the point I even felt ill. It ain't all roses but without the mud, there ain't no lotus. Get clear on what you want to feel before you start creating stories about how that has to look. Your new year's resolutions will be better for it and you'll have a lot less stress.
Read my about page on https://thestressdojo.com/ for even more.
Hey there, I'm touching base with you today in a brief episode just to let you know I'm not dead. I woke up coughing and sicky again today and didn't think I'd get through a regular episode. I obviously should not have skipped my normal drop day when I felt fine but it was Christmas day. Whatever the case, I'll get it together soon even if I have to sit for hours in editing to cut out all the coughing.
I got a frog in my throat this episode. I'm tryna be good ya'll and get onto my weekly content creation. I'm on week 3 and it's looking good, so I could not let you (or me) down by skipping out just because I didn't feel good. I take listener mail today and revisit the Tibetan singing bowl that has been absent since I rebranded. I use it for a small mindfulness practice with you before signing out with my hot tea.
Talking today about holiday stress, particularly around Christmas and they crazy things we do to ourselves because we don't stop and re-evaluate why we do what we do.
I give some ideas on ways to break that up and start moving forward with what you DO want rather than what you DON'T want.
Structure and consistency focus our creative energy when we need it most. In this episode I talk about why that is and what happens to creativity when you don't focus.
I'm talking this episode about the conscious effort it takes to find your sanctuary space. No one does it for you. It is a muscle you have to build for yourself and by that process it makes you stronger in all areas of your life.

I've rebranded my business and the podcast had to come along well to make it all cohesive. I talk about the process of change and why this had to happen.
I'm keeping on moving into the simple space, ya'll. It's powerful though it can feel elusive and maybe a little scary too. Come on get simple!
September is the new January. It's time to get focused and pare away the uncessary, the extra, and the distracting. Take a look at your seemingly unimportant decisions that keep you stuck in confusing activity with achievement.

I'm talking this episode about the mindset adjustments that help after big events happen. You can get through them by being flexible and adaptable with Harmony, Excellence, and Sustainability. This was originally written about the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. I'm making this episode on the 1 year anniversary of the storm.
How to make change in a way that works. Today I talk about changing habitual ways of doing things that are not working in your best interest.
This meditation is from "Fear Less" by Dan Sluyter.
It's been a minute since I did a meditaiton, so I'm putting up a fresh one for you.
Happy Pride Month, ya'll. What are you keeping hidden that would will let you step into peace and power if you could let it be known?
It's ok to get into the dumps. Trying to chase it away bypasses all the juicy bits you can glean while down there.
It is so hard cleaning out closets. Old pieces of clothing have memories and nostalgia attached to them even tho they haven't fit in years...like lots of years. Looking at what those things mean and how they weigh us down is today's episode.
Today I talk about getting judgemental towards myself when I get off the mindful routine. I look for the gifts of quiet time at first to try and assuage my guilt but then realize it's all part of the process, baby.
The universe gave me a sh!t sandwich to munch on and help me crank out a teachable moment for you and me.
Talking about creative blocks and the anxiety that comes during that silence. Don't be afraid of it. Embrace it. Explore it. Stand in it and see who you really are today.
This episode concerns the ability to create safe spaces to rest and recharge your brain from the stress of daily life.
This episode wraps up my look at the poem The Invitation. How do you like the full nakedness of your life under the facades, masks and makeup?
Happy Heart Day to you...that's every day, not just when the marketing machines tell you you're supposed to celebrate. You have a heart every day!
Listener Phillip reminded me to get back over here and podcast. This episode is a rundown of what I've been working on. FB groups: Awake After 40 and Gay Men Meditating, my YouTube channel Riding Tides Life Coaching and the blog on my website www.risingtideslifecoaching.com. whew, i'm tired just thinking of it.
The world is made of stories. From the moment you exit the womb, stories are being told. Can you write new ones as needed or do you stay shackled to yours even after reality has changed?
Talking about my facebook community Awake After 40 and apologizing for not creating content for the past month...ooopsie.
Stanza two of the Invitation by Oriah. Can you be a brave fool and pick sustainability over security?
This episode being an exploration of Oriah's poem The Invitation with upacking stanza 1.
Another mediation read out of Stephine Levine's work Guided Meditations, Explorations and Healings. This one goes nicely in order if you have done grounding and soft belly. Loving Kindness meditation extends those energies to yourself, those you love and to the larger world.
This mediation is about softening and letting go in the belly where a lot of armoring and protective measures are held. If it does not feel safe to do so, go back to the previous episode. The meditation there is for grounding and safety only. This meditation is from a book published in the early 90's by Stephen Levine.
This episdoe is a simple guided meditation for grounding and feeling safe and secure. It's dedicated to first responders and anyone who had to be evacuated by choice or cirucmstance and for anyone who was worried about any of those people.
I read The Invitation by Oriah Mountain Dreamer this episode. It is a powerful poem I read in my 20's when it was originally written and though it held power, I had not lived it's reality yet. Coming back to it in my 40's has a deeper resonance to it that I think is valuable for all of us.
Shifting from 'generation x' to 'Life After 40' feels like a right move. We will all be after 40 one day. I also talk about my upcoming meditation class.
Today's episode is a meditation involving 2 different methods of focus. One physical sensation, the other the breath. There's a solid 5 minutes of silence in there where you'll just be focusing on your breath. Do not use this podcast while driving or operating heavy machinery or in some way need to be focused on your external environment.
Today I'm talking about whining, bitching and moaning. All of which are ok as long as you do it with a curious and creative complaining partner.
Today's episode looks at how life is juicy and flowing but we treat it as if it's a fixed entity and make ourselves miserable.
I ramble around the ideas of independence and freedom in this episode and get all Buddhisty and stuff.
I'm talking today about Compassion as the next piece of Mindful Mindset. Compassion is a deep practice and I only scratch the surface and also talk about the failures (like compassion towards exes we don't like).
Curiosity is the topic of this episode. It is part 4 of the Mindful Mindset. Curiosity builds upon the previous episodes and builds the muscle that will move you out of your comfort zone.
Today I talk about the top 10 negative playlist inside your head and how it creates a buildup of negative sludge that needs to be cleaned out on the daily.
Life is a verb and Gratitude is a part of working your life practice. Gratitude is a skill that requires a lot of work because we are professional forgetters who need constant reminders of who we are and the greatness we can achieve.
Today I'm talking about the present moment and why it's important. I include some action steps for making it real in your life and 3 coaching questions...and get a little saucy.
In this episode I introduce myself and my thoughts on this podcast. Mindfulness, meditation, Gen X, it's all in there and more because everything I am, this podcast will be. I say in this epidsode, life is a VERB, and so is podcasting so as I change it will too. Welcome!
