Why do we wear what we wear? For some, it’s just a matter of personal style. For others, fashion choices are dictated by socio-cultural factors such as work environments, cultural norms, political and/or religious associations, gender, and even race.
In my interview with Kimberly Jenkins, fashion educator at both Parsons School of Design & Pratt Institute, she highlights past views some have had about fashion through lens of race. She discusses how fashion pioneers like June Ambrose & Misa Hylton charted new courses in fashion in spite of race. She also explains how her own research in Fashion & Race seeks to foster communicative pathways to the hard to broach topic of race relations in our country.
The work Kimberly is doing has been mentioned and featured in VOGUE, The Wall Street Journal, New York Mag, Fashionista, i-D, WWD, Dazed, Refinery 29, Nylon and so many more!
I have no doubt that Kimberly's work stands poised to change the trajectory of fashion studies as we know it. Listen to episode 53 of The Fashion Alumni Podcast to hear Kimberly's story!

On Fashion Alumni Episode 50, I’m talking with Salone Monet, a luxury shoe designer in New York City. This leading lady built her namesake brand “Salone Monet” from the ground up by learning how to create her own designs and cobble her own shoes.
Salone didn't start in shoe design; far from it. She earned her college degree in communications from American University in Washington, DC. Then she went on to work in PR for the federal government and trade associations; while also working in a high-end shoe boutique. Intrigued by the ingenuity of shoe design, Salone decided to study shoe making.
When I met Salone, I was thoroughly impressed by her desire to support women of color through her work and also her desire to honor ethical design by guaranteeing fair wages.
If you are wondering if it’s too late for you to shift career directions and begin again, the answer is emphatically, no! It’s never too late to follow your soul’s intuition and do the work that will fill you up and light up the world in the process. Salone is doing just that! Listen in as she shares how she made it happen. And if the shoe fits, you know what to do :-)

Jay DeMari is more than just a name, it’s a brand with a unique identity. It's a brand with a message to share. Jay DeMari is the namesake of a mother's son, a mother’s dream realized, and a mother’s legacy.
DeMisha Burks has loved the creative nature of the fashion industry from the very beginning. She dreamed of walking the runway as a high-fashion model, but her hopes were dashed by industry height standards & expectations; which eventually led to her own self-doubt. After years of listening to what others had to say about her future, DeMisha finally decided enough was enough!
No more conformity, no more blending in, and no more reflecting someone else’s expectations. She knew that she had a unique message to share with the world. And she decided to begin spreading the word by creating an online clothing brand, Jay DeMari, named after her son. She was clear that she wanted her brand to be an online commerce boutique with a global presence.
DeMisha's message to young people all over the world is that your identity is unique. Your uniqueness is powerful. And never allow anyone to tell you any different.
What I learned from my talk with DeMisha is that, it’s time for each one of us to find our own voice, connect with like minds, honor our gifts, ignore the haters, put in the real work, and leave the rest in God’s hands. Listen to our interview and be encouraged.
