Franz ZehetnerArchivar der Dombauhütte St. Stephan Archivist of the Dombauhütte St. Stephan

English Description: This German language RiCAST will discuss what RIEGL and the landmark of Vienna, the St. Stephen's Cathedral, have in common.

Franz Zehetner, from the archives of the Dombauhütte St. Stephan, is responsible for the extensive documents and plans of the gothic cathedral - some of them are already centuries old! Managing, updating, and supplementing the records on an ongoing basis and making them available for a wide variety of purposes, such as the ongoing restoration work, is an exciting but also a challenging task.

Since 2005, the current project of the cooperation between Dombauhütte and RIEGL have proven how effective and helpful laser scanning can be for cultural heritage.

Nikolaus Studnicka, RIEGL Business Division Manager Terrestrial Laser Scanning, has carried out extensive surveying work on and in St. Stephen's Cathedral during the last two years. With only four scanning days, measurement and image data of slightly more than one terabyte were acquired, which now substantially support the work of the Cathedral Construction Office and the Dombauhütte.

Learn more about the everyday life of a cathedral construction archivist, the very special tasks, that may occur in the field of preservation and revitalization of such an important cultural jewel, and how laser scanning can support this work.

We are proud that RIEGL has been able to contribute to documenting St. Stephen's Cathedral and providing the data that made it possible to visualize such a gigantic piece of cultural heritage!

Ron Chapple, CEO of GEO1

In today’s RiCAST, Michael Sitar, Executive Management Consultant, checks in with Ron Chapple, CEO of Geo 1. Years ago, Chapple’s Southern California-based firm received a client request for a high-resolution video of an electrical transmission circuit. When planning the shoot, his team made the decision to add aerial LiDAR scans collected with RIEGL equipment to their traditional video tools, giving them a product that included the element of 3D. Since then GEO1 has never looked back and is using LiDAR on project after project around the globe!

This discussion with Michael and Ron reveals Chapple’s inspirations to venture into the LiDAR industry, establishing Geo 1, and discuss some exciting international projects their team has worked on. Ron’s team utilizes a custom integration with a set of RIEGL VUX-1LR scanners as well as the VQ-480 II for several applications such as city modeling and corridor mapping. Listen to this informative interview between Michael and Ron as they go into further detail regarding these projects; including work with the National Geographic Society acquiring high resolution scans of mountainous terrain for research initiatives.

TODAY’S EPISODE: LiDAR FOR FORENSICS

In today’s episode Jillian Kreider, RIEGL Terrestrial Sales Specialist, begins a series on using LiDAR for forensics.

Jillian Kreider with the RIEGL VZ-2000i

Jill explains how RIEGL’s terrestrial scanners are being used to create court admissible, 3D records of crime and crash scenes by emergency responders around the world.

In this six minute podcast, Jillian will talk about RIEGL’s LiDAR scanning tools that improve scene safety by giving emergency responders the ability to document scenes quickly, and with only one officer.

Jill will touch on how LiDAR enables officers to collect evidence unseen by the naked eye.  She will also touch on how the scanners help show the scene at rest, but also the scene at impact. We hope you enjoy Jillian’s forensic series.
