When we use or hear the phrase “the good life,” the first thing that comes to mind is a life defined by comfort, ease or success. However, throughout Scripture there are many ordinary people who discover that the good life begins when they respond to God’s call to live fully in His purposes and plans. This sermon series takes a look at five characters in the Bible who are called, equipped, awakened, engaged and empowered to trust God completely. It is a unique perspective that calls upon all of us to pursue the good life. Thank you for joining us in our traditional worship service. You are welcome here!

So much of our faith can be found in the hymns we sing. These songs are like sermons put to music that have been passed down to us from generation to generation, withstanding the test of time. Inspired by God, the great hymn writers have given us inspiration, comfort, hope and reassurance through their words and melodies, so often in our times of deepest need. In this four-part sermon series, we will focus on the important themes that are contained in these great hymns that chronicle our journey of faith. We are delighted you have joined us in our Traditional Worship today, and we pray your spirit will be lifted as we share together, “The Faith We Sing.”

In a world where faith is questioned and truth is ambiguous, followers of Jesus need something solid to hold onto. Every day, it seems Christians are pressured to tell a disbelieving society what they believe in and why. In this five-week sermon series titled Anchored, we will explore the core truths of the Christian faith — abiding truths, strong enough to steady our hearts, strengthen our faith, and sustain us through the seasons of life.

Welcome to Easter Sunday — the most important day of our Christian faith. Today signals the rebirth of hope, reminding us that God declared that death no longer has the last word! We are delighted that you have joined us to celebrate our Lord’s victory over sin and the grave and pray you will feel God’s presence as you encounter the risen Savior through the music, prayers, Scriptures, and spoken word.
Everything we do here at The Woodlands Methodist Church is rooted in the Good News of Jesus Christ. Thank you for being with us — you are welcome here!

Lent is the sacred season of the church that has its roots in the 40 days Jesus spent fasting and being tempted in the wilderness. As it was then, so it is today: Lent is a time of testing and of longing — a time that is intended to produce within all of us a “holy hunger” that fills the emptiness of our spirits and refreshes our souls with the presence of God. This season invites us to cultivate a deep desire for God’s presence and truth, seeking renewal as we journey toward the cross and ultimately Easter morning. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus said: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” We are delighted that you are on this Lenten journey with us as we seek fulfillment from the only One who can satisfy our hunger.

As we begin the new year, we are taking some time to discover what God’s Word says about how we steward every gift God has given us — our experiences, our gifts, our resources and our lives. Jesus said we are the salt of the earth — created to bring flavor, preserve what is good and add value wherever God places us. But salt only makes a difference when it’s poured out. So often, life shakes us through change, loss or challenge, and we wonder why. What if the shaking isn’t meant to break us, but to deploy us? In this series, we’ll discover how God uses those moments to grow our faith, reveal the treasure within us and pour His grace through us into a world that desperately needs it.

The shepherds were the first to hear the good news, the first to see the Christ Child, and the first to share the message. Their story reminds us that God’s love often arrives quietly, in fields — in ordinary places, among ordinary people — and then calls us to tell others. As we gather for worship today, may our hearts echo the shepherds’ telegram of joy: Christ is born! God is with us! May we, too, go forth glorifying and praising God for all we have seen and heard this Christmas.
Traditional Christmas Service | Bishop Bob Hayes |
More than 2,000 years have passed since Christ was born and we are still drawn to this story that never gets old. Scripture says, “But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son” (Galatians 4:4). And with the entire universe moving at His command, every participant in this great human drama took their place as planned on the stage of eternity. But it didn’t end on that night. We are here both as witnesses and participants in the same narrative that was conceived, produced and directed by God, and we all have a role to play in this timeless story.
Rather than observing the birth of Christ with a sense of nostalgia, why not rediscover the meaning and purpose it holds for us all? For the babe born in that stable has the power to transform us again and again. Welcome. We are glad you are here!

It was the prophet Isaiah who first introduced us to one of the most beautiful words found in the Old Testament — Emmanuel. When translated, it means “God with us.” The word not only holds historical and sacred significance to all of God’s people, but it also symbolizes God’s divine presence and protection for both the present and future. Emmanuel conveys a sense of promise and belonging, of care and comfort, of courage and optimism. As we find ourselves in this season of Advent, it is so important for us to know that even now God is with us in our waiting, Our Celebration, our celebration for the gift of the Messiah, and most of all, for the love He brings to all people. We are delighted that you have joined us for worship in this sacred Advent season, and we hope you feel the love and warmth of our congregation. Indeed, God is with us!

The Gospel of John is without a doubt one of the most fascinating books in the Bible. Often called the “spiritual gospel,” this unique and powerful testimony provides us with an up close and personal perspective of Jesus like no other book ever written. From the prologue to the epilogue, the main message of John’s Gospel is that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and we can have eternal life by believing in Him. Beautifully crafted, the book has an abundance of signs, symbols and miracle stories. In the coming weeks we will journey through this amazing testament, and we invite you to come and journey with us as Jesus’ identity is made known to the people of His time and to us today through its timeless message. We are delighted that you have chosen to worship with us, and we pray your spirit will be fed.

The one thing that separated Jesus from all the prophets who came before or after Him was His insistence on His disciples knowing the truth. To Jesus, truth was more than simple honesty; it was a concept rooted in God’s character. He taught that through truth, we come to understand God’s faithfulness and the dependability of His words and actions. In contrast, lies are the enemy of truth. The Evil One, who spreads false teachings, tries to have us live in a false narrative about who we are, how the world works and even the nature of God Himself. This sermon series is about defining what is truth, how we find it and the specific lies that hold our faith captive. We are delighted you have chosen to join us as we seek to find the truth that sets us free.

We are delighted you have chosen to join us as we seek to find the truth that sets us free.

This summer, refresh your soul with the Psalms — an ancient songbook that captures the full range of human emotions. When you combine the timeless messages of life with the beauty of the songs, you end up with a seven-week sermon series, Summertime Psongs. It is a modern-day approach to rediscovering the beauty of how these songwriters penned expressions of wisdom, lament, hope, prayer, gratitude, anger, praise and enthronement. We are glad you have chosen to join us in the harmony of our worship as we rediscover the beauty of these songs and prayers.

Have you ever asked yourself, “Why does the church exist?” Other than the obvious answer of transforming lives and spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ, what is a vibrant church called to be or do? Our mission statement of “Reaching People for Jesus Christ, Discipling Them in Faith, and Helping Those in Need” gives us a great start, but is there something more beyond our horizon that God is calling us to see or be engaged in? These are the questions we want to answer in this current capital campaign sermon series, Beyond. This is our moment to boldly pursue God’s greater purpose for us, and in doing so, we might also discover how God is leading us to step out in faith. Welcome to Traditional worship. We’re glad you’re here.

For nearly 50 years, God’s faithfulness has been the foundation of our church. Now, we believe He is calling us to something greater — to go further in faith, generosity and love. He is calling us to go beyond. Over the next four weeks, as we embark on the Beyond capital campaign, we invite you to prayerfully seek God’s guidance and consider how He may be leading you to step out in faith. This is our moment to boldly pursue His greater purpose — together, let’s go beyond.

Welcome to Easter Sunday — the most important day of our Christian faith. We are delighted that you have joined us to celebrate our Lord’s victory over sin and death. May you feel God’s presence as you encounter the risen Savior through the music, prayers, Scriptures and spoken word. Everything we do is rooted in the Good News of Jesus Christ. Again, thank you for being with us — you are welcome here!

Throughout Jesus’ ministry, prayer was the foundation on which He built His relationship with God. Before every miracle — from giving sight to the blind to feeding of the multitude, from raising Lazarus from the dead to facing that darkest moment in Gethsemane — He always prayed. Prayer was essential for Jesus, and when He gave His Sermon on the Mount, considered to be the greatest of all His teachings, He instructed us on how to pray by giving us the model prayer that has stood the test of time. In this sermon series, we will examine the power and depth of what has come to be known as the Lord’s Prayer. As modern-day disciples, we can learn so much from these timeless words. We are delighted you have joined us for our traditional worship, and we welcome you as we explore what it means when we ask, “Teach us to pray.”

The foundation of the entire Biblical narrative can be found in the five covenants that have been made between God and humanity. They represent the sacred and binding promises of God, and they are often called the ‘backbone’ of the Bible. Each covenant builds upon another, forming a complete redemptive storyline. God preserved the world through Noah, initiated redemption through Abraham, established the nation of Israel through Moses, promised an eternal shepherd-king through David, and then fulfilled all His covenants through Jesus. Covenants are essentially promises that have been given to us so that God can enter into a personal relationship with us, and as we will discover in this sermon series, God has always kept His promises.

Giving is an expression of our faith and a way to reflect God’s boundless STEWARDSHIP. In the month of January, we will embrace the theme of making room — creating space in our lives for God’s work to flourish. By giving, we open doors for new ministries to grow, the gospel to reach more people, and lives to be transformed. It’s not just about finances; it’s about making room for hope, grace and love to take root in the world around us. Together, we have the opportunity to be part of something greater, making room for God to move powerfully in and through us.

Traditional Christmas Service | Bishop Bob Hayes |
Never was there a night such as this. God is the only one who could have conceived of a night where angels, stars, shepherds and wise men would all converge at a tiny stable behind an inn near Bethlehem. From the very beginning of creation itself, God already knew how this timeless drama would unfold, and from that very first Christmas until now, the story of the birth of Jesus Christ has captivated the hearts of believers throughout history. Each year it pulls us back into its awe and wonder. It is a story that will never grow old, and one that we will never outgrow. We welcome you tonight to our Christmas Eve service, a night when we proclaim that the light of Christ shines in the midst of our darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Traditional Worship | Bishop Bob Hayes |
The signs of Christmas are everywhere! Trees are trimmed, Christmas lights are shining, nativity scenes are on display, and Christmas carols fill the air. Each year, as we sing the carols of Christmas, we are retelling the story of Jesus’ birth. These songs remind us of the hope, peace, joy and love that come with the arrival of the Messiah, and it is through these songs that we rediscover the wonder of Christmas. This year, as we sing, may we be reminded to “Repeat the sounding joy!” not just for the Christmas season, but always.

When we use the phrase “heart of a lion,” it is nothing more than a figurative expression usually associated with bravery and courage. Quite often it is used to commend someone for their boldness or to inspire others to act with similar courage. The Bible is filled with stories of men and women who possessed the ability to tackle formidable forces and obstacles in order to achieve God’s will. Their stories are both remarkable and unforgettable. Hopefully, this sermon series will inspire us to act with determination and fearlessness when we come up against our own challenges and trials. We welcome you to Traditional Worship, and we are glad you have joined us.

Missions Sunday | Rev. Karen Tyler |
Jesus is the river of life, flowing from the heart of God into the brokenness of the world. Like the waters seen by Ezekiel, this river brings healing, restoration and abundance wherever it flows. As followers of Christ, we are called to be channels of this life-giving water, offering hope, love and healing to those in need. Yet, many have yet to encounter the life Jesus offers. Today, we are reminded of our mission to share this river of life and well of grace until the whole world knows. Join us as we welcome Rev. Karen Tyler, Pastor of Worship and Evangelism, who will inspire us to embrace this calling and spread God’s love to every corner of the earth.

What if I told you that every Christian has the power and the capacity to think, act and maintain the same focus and values that Jesus had — would you believe me? Well, the truth is, we do! This is the message that the Apostle Paul proclaimed when he boldly declared that once we accept the free gift of salvation given to us through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, we are given the “mind of Christ.” Even though we will never know all that our Savior knew, it is up to us to discover what it means to think like Jesus and have the same attitude and mindset our Lord possessed. In this five- week sermon series, we will explore how every Christian believer can model the life of the greatest mind that ever lived. Welcome to our Traditional worship service!

Not surprisingly, the Bible has a lot to say about wisdom. But what is it and how do we obtain it? Attempting to define wisdom in one particular way would be impossible, and going in search of it will lead you in many different directions. In the Scriptures, wisdom isn’t just about intelligence or knowledge, and the one true path the writers of both the Old and New Testaments agree on is this: Wisdom begins with God and ends with God. In fact, it is a gift of God. When we have a profound respect and reverence for our Creator, we understand that this is the foundation from which true wisdom springs. In this sermon series we will explore four key tenets of Godly wisdom: Priorities, Love, Humility and Learning. We are delighted you are here to share in this most revealing series on what the Bible has to say to us about Words of Wisdom, God’s unique gift to us.

We are delighted you are here to share in this most revealing series on what the Bible has to say to us about Words of Wisdom, God’s unique gift to us.

Water was essential throughout the parched and dusty plains of the Middle East, where the writings of the Old and New Testaments were born. The Red Sea and the Sea of Galilee were the two most important sources of water in the region, and they provided the setting for so many wonderful stories throughout the Bible. In Exodus, Moses “parted the Red Sea,” freeing his people and leaving behind their bondage in Egypt. It was at the Sea of Galilee where Jesus called His first disciples and where most of His ministry took place. As we come into the heart of this summer season, this sermon series invites us to go back and rediscover how God used these two great bodies of water to liberate a nation and provide a setting where Jesus performed miracles as He taught us all about the Kingdom of God.

One of the reasons Jesus stands out as the most unique person who ever lived can be found in the fact that He knew how to speak the language of people’s hearts. Chapter 12 of the Gospel of Mark says, “And the common people heard him gladly.” This means that Jesus was able to convey the Word of God in such a way that everyone who heard Him could understand and respond to His teaching. He painted pictures with His words. He used simple things that were easily identifiable: coins, salt, light, water and many other symbols. In this sermon series, Faith Grows Here, we will be highlighting how Jesus used the images of seeds, trees and plants to help His followers understand that if we, too, hear Him gladly, His words can sink deeply into the soil of our souls, allowing us to grow as well.

Have you ever received a blessing or a spiritual favor that you know you didn’t deserve? If so, you have experienced grace. Grace is the unmerited and unearned gift of God that comes to our rescue when we make mistakes or wander off the narrow path that leads to life. It is compassion, forgiveness and mercy mingled together to demonstrate God’s love for us and to remind us that God takes more delight in saving us than punishing us. Throughout the Scriptures there are dozens of stories where individuals were shown grace, either by way of God’s benevolence or through the greatest expression of grace the world has ever known, Jesus Christ. This sermon series will help us understand how a grace-filled life can turn our meager existence into a joyful, empowered and abundant way to live.

The season of Lent has its roots in the 40 days Jesus spent fasting and being tempted in the wilderness. Just as Christ relied on the Word of God to sustain Him, we, too, must use this season to nourish our souls as we experience our own temptations. One way for us to prepare ourselves and be ready for the great festival of the resurrection of Christ, which Easter celebrates, is to find God in the quiet places along our own Lenten journey. The prophet Isaiah wrote, “Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near.” In this holy, 40-day season, our sermon series is designed to help us seek and find God in the tranquil and peaceful places where we, like Christ, can be victorious over all those things that separate us from God. We are delighted you have joined us for our Lenten journey.

Our focus for the month of January will center on our church and how it embodies the qualities of generosity, guidance, gratitude and growth. Here at The Woodlands Methodist Church, we are committed to fostering a community of kindness while guiding spiritual growth. We are grateful for the opportunity to impact our community and the world as we strive to leave a lasting legacy for generations to come. This month, as we ponder these elements that are so integral to our church’s identity, let us be guided to the role each of us plays in fulfilling this mission.

There is something about the Christmas story that still draws us into its circle of beauty and mystery every year. Regardless of how many times we’ve heard or read this timeless description of how God stepped onto the stage of humanity, we, like the shepherds and wise men, must make our own pilgrimage to Bethlehem to witness this “good news of great joy” that is coming into the world. It is a story that will never grow old, for it is renewed in the hearts and minds of all who believe that God is with us, and that nothing will ever separate us from His love. We welcome you tonight as we gather around the manger of the Christ child who was born a King!

There is an unexplainable mystery that proclaims the seasons of Advent and Christmas, a story so steeped in simplicity and awe that it transcends everything we thought we knew about the God we serve. Mankind has always sought God in many unusual ways, but the Christmas story is about God pursuing us, and on the night a child was born in the city of Bethlehem, God found us. Since then, our world has not been the same. Prophets, angels, shepherds and wise men heralded the good news, and their message declared the greatest wonder of all: “Emmanuel — God is with us!” It is a story that never grows old, and we are delighted you are here to experience Advent and Christmas once again and to celebrate The Wonder of It All.

Throughout the Bible, a storm is symbolic of any hardship, trial or difficulty that may prove to be stronger than we can withstand on our own. In the Old Testament the early prophets gave notice to God’s people of upcoming tribulations and ordeals, and in the New Testament Jesus speaks of an array of storms that will test our faith. This sermon series is a wake-up call for us to pay attention to the swirling winds of fear, doubt, temptation, evil and other forces that would harm us. It is a reminder that God’s salvation and love for us can be found in Jesus Christ, and in Him we will find shelter, strength and abundance in His Word.

Missions Sunday 2023 | Rev. Karen Tyler |
Jesus is the hope of the world. Whatever need a person is experiencing, when Jesus speaks into their situation, He brings life, hope and the promise of abundance. Yet most of the world does not know of the hope of Jesus. In God’s Word, we are instructed to offer to others the same love, hope and abundance that we have received. Today, we welcome Rev. Karen Tyler, Pastor of Missions, who will bring an encouraging word that will guide us as we seek to respond and to keep responding to Jesus’ command to be witnesses of God’s goodness until the whole world knows!

How many times have you earnestly prayed for something, and it felt as though your prayer went unheard or unanswered? Or, even worse, God answered your petition with an unmistakable “no”? From our early childhood we found it difficult to accept the word “no” from our parents, and we certainly couldn’t understand why God, our Heavenly Father, would respond to us in such a way. But the truth is, there are times when God says, “No.” How do you feel when that happens? Does it cause your faith to waver or cause you to question if God really cares? In this sermon series we will examine what the Scriptures say to us when God says “no” and what our faithful response should be.

But the truth is, there are times when God says, “No.” How do you feel when that happens? Does it cause your faith to waver or cause you to question if God really cares? In this sermon series we will examine what the Scriptures say to us when God says “no” and what our faithful response should be.

Paul’s letter to the church at Rome is considered by many to be one of the greatest pieces of New Testament literature ever written. One biblical scholar writes, “All roads in the Bible lead to Romans, and when the message of Romans gets into a person’s heart there is no telling what may happen.” Single-handedly this book has significantly impacted history because of its grand theology about Christ and its practical instructions for Christian living. This six-week sermon series, “Survival of the Fittest,” will guide and prepare us to be victorious as we seek to live out our calling as disciples of Jesus Christ.

The real attraction of the Bible is to be found in the fact that it contains the greatest short stories, essays, philosophies and beauty of thought ever known to mankind. The characters and the mighty acts of God are on display on every page, and for many of us, there are those special stories that have stood the test of time. In this sermon series, which we are calling “Mixed Tape,” our pastors will share their favorite messages from the Bible, allowing us to sample the wide range of expression and inspiration that has been given to us by God as found in the Scriptures.

The great hymns of our faith are like diaries that chronicle the story of our lives. In essence, they are the “Life Songs” that have given us inspiration, comfort, hope and reassurance in our time of deepest need. Inspired by God, the great hymn writers have gifted us with songs that have stood the test of time and have been passed down to us from generation to generation. This sermon series will help us recall those special times on our spiritual journeys when words may have failed, but somehow the music spoke to us, reminding us of God’s love for us as expressed through His Son, our Savior Jesus Christ.

Before Jesus ascended to heaven, He commanded His disciples to return to Jerusalem to wait for the “gift” that had been promised by God. What followed changed the course of history because the gift they received was the power that revealed itself in the Holy Spirit! It happened on the day of Pentecost and is often referred to as the birthday of the church. It is awe-inspiring that we can trace our beginnings to an event that defies comprehension. What is even more amazing is that the work of the Holy Spirit present in Jesus’ early ministry is even now present in our lives each and every day! We are delighted you are worshipping with us as we celebrate God’s gift to all believers—Espiritu Santo—the Holy Spirit!

When we use the term “model citizen,” we most often think of a person living an exemplary life, possessing such qualities as honesty, integrity and truth. Individuals who demonstrate these characteristics usually stand out in a crowd and are easily recognized. However, the New Testament is full of model citizens who walked in Jesus’ footsteps but were not always given the notoriety many other disciples received. Not only were they strong in their faith, but their influence and contribution to the early church was significant. This sermon series reveals a few lesser-known followers of our Lord who serve as an inspiration to us, reminding us that we all have unique gifts to offer as we walk in the footsteps of Christ.

Easter 2023 | Bishop Bob Hayes |
“He is risen!” This was the shout from the women and the disciples as they arrived at the tomb of Jesus and found it empty on that first Easter morning. Today, over 2,000 years later, our response and affirmation can be nothing less than “He is risen indeed!” Welcome to Easter Sunday — the most important day of our Christian faith.

There is a road that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at Easter—it is called Lent. It is a 40-day journey that invites us to enter into a deeper relationship with God as we remember the sacrifice Jesus made on our behalf which led Him to the cross on a hill called Calvary. Lent is a solemn and holy season, and travel along this road demands something of us, for it is only through prayer, confession, self-examination and sacrifice that we can arrive at that destination where we fully understand the hidden possibilities that lie dormant within each of us. This road trip can become the most important journey we will ever take, for it summons us to die unto our sins so we may celebrate the Resurrection and the promise of eternal life with the One who died for us and gave Himself as a living sacrifice for all.

Throughout Jesus’ ministry, one remarkable truth stands out: He never imposed Himself upon any of the people He encountered. Jesus recognized the fact that God gave human beings free will and, in doing so, gave them the freedom to choose to abide in the true love of God or continue in another direction. In several instances Jesus is quoted as saying, “As you wish” or “As you choose,” knowing that the choices that are made can be the first step toward change. But when our wishes and choices take precedence over God’s plan for us, the consequences can be destructive. This sermon series will focus on us making the right choices that will help us abide in the true love God offers us.

Welcome to 2023! We are so excited that you have joined us in worship, and we eagerly invite you to journey with us into this new year to see what God has in store for us. The month of January marks the 45th anniversary since our church held its first worship services in what was then a small community called The Woodlands. Since then, God has blessed us to be a “light set upon a hill for all to see,” and it is our prayer that your presence here will enable us to shine brighter than ever, all for the glory of God. We are glad you are here.

We now find ourselves in the season of Advent, a four-week period of preparation that culminates in the birth of Jesus. It should be a time of excitement and joy, of laughter and merriment. But for many, this season is a time of sadness, emptiness and frustration. Life should be wonderful, but how can it be when so many things take us away from the real joy of Christmas? How do we find light in the darkness, peace amid chaos and good news in a bad-news world? In this sermon series, “It’s (Not Always) a Wonderful Life,” we will rediscover the hope that comes from the faithful promises of God to bring peace through our Savior, Jesus Christ.

In biblical times a seal and an insignia were often used to identify and protect anything confidential or of value. The seal specified to whom it belonged, preventing anyone else from tampering with its contents. In the book of Ephesians, the Apostle Paul compares the Holy Spirit to a seal, saying: “Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession.” Once a soul has trusted in Christ, that soul is sealed and made secure in Him. In this sermon series, we will focus on the promises made on our behalf, given to us through the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, all of which have been Signed, Sealed and Delivered!

The word “faith” has many meanings, but because we live in a world where most people have to “see” in order to “believe,” the idea of having faith in something for which there is no proof is difficult to accept. However, the New Testament book of Hebrews tells us that “faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Jesus knew that faith was a gift from God that requires a human response. In this sermon series we will look at the stories of how faith allows us to believe in the unbelievable and make the impossible possible.

Hope is a powerful word. It lives within all of us. Jesus Christ touched lives and offered hope through His words and His actions. He healed the blind and the leper, He offered living water, and He gave us salvation and eternal life through His death on the cross. This week we welcome Rev. Karen Tyler who will bring an inspiring message of hope. Hope lives through us. As we offer it to others here and around the world, we are living and leaving a legacy of hope.

The greatest invitation we will ever receive is to “follow” Jesus. Just as He called His first disciples to leave their nets and go with Him today, Jesus’ call is the same. He summons us to leave behind and let go of our busy and chaotic lives. He teaches us, empowers us, and offers us an opportunity to receive His salvation and go where He leads. Christ was always moving forward, and so must we. “Follow me” is still the call to abundant life, and it is our prayer we will accept His invitation to live out our faith and learn to extend the gifts He gives to others.

Blessed assurance! Living in uncertain and unpredictable times is nothing new for God’s people. From the beginning of creation until this present day, believers have always had to contend with fear, doubt, despair and failure. At times it seems our faith is tested beyond our ability to cope, but in those moments when all seems hopeless, we would do well to remember the promises God has made to us. Let us focus on the great promises God has given us – knowing that whatever happens, God will be with us!

Hey, friends, and thank you for joining us in worship today! It’s my sincere prayer that you both feel welcome here and sense the presence of God’s Holy Spirit as we worship during our time together.
I’m so glad you’re here because today is a special moment in the life of our church. I truly believe that this day is an historic moment in which I share God’s call to the next step in our season of denominational discernment. I invite you to join other members of our church in upholding the traditional Christian doctrines of our faith and carrying them forward in faith.
NEW! — Join Rev. Pierce Drake, TWMC’s Pastor of Community Formation, and a very special guest, Rev. Carolyn Moore of the Art of Holiness blog and podcast, to gain understanding and perspectives on the newly formed Global Methodist Church. Moore is a longtime friend of The Woodlands Methodist Church, the current Global Council Chairwoman of the Wesleyan Covenant Association, and a leading advocate for traditional congregations discerning disaffiliation from the greater United Methodist denomination.
NEW! — We can live a life of peace and comfort, or we can live a life that is great and glorious. But we cannot do both. Join pastors Rob Renfroe and Luann Riley and Loft Lead Pastor Daniel Lumpee for a conversation on courageous living as individuals and as a church in these days of denominational discernment. On this July fourth, Americans from “sea to shining sea” will mark the signing of the Declaration of Independence that happened 246 years ago. Our services will reflect the patriotism that accompanies this event by singing national hymns and honoring those who served to maintain our political freedoms and religious liberties. It is also a time for us to remember that the scriptures say a lot about the freedom and liberty God provides. In Psalm 33:12, it says: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people He chose for His inheritance.” Let us remind ourselves that we have been a blessed people because God has always come first, and our independence is a direct result of our dependence upon God and the gift of Jesus Christ.

So many of the convictions we hold and the truths we believe are captured in the songs we sing! The reality is, we are singing people, and music, as seen throughout the Bible, trains us in the practice of remembering who God is and what God has done for us. In the book of Psalms, we are encouraged to “Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts” (105:2). Through the gift of music, God has united art with truth and a way for the gospel message to sink itself into our hearts through singing and sharing our faith in song.

William Shakespeare asked the famous question, “What’s in a name?” Names are important for our identity. There are names we are given at birth, names we use to connect or remember others, and names we use to label ourselves. In this series, we are going to look at some of the labels we wear, but we will also celebrate how Jesus can change those labels and give us a new name! Join us as we celebrate our connection to each other and say, “Hello, my name is ...”

Welcome to Easter Sunday — the most important day of our Christian faith! On this day death was defeated with the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and we are delighted you have joined us to celebrate and worship. Here at The Woodlands Methodist Church, everything we do is rooted in the Good News of Jesus Christ. May you feel God’s presence as you encounter the risen Lord through the traditional music, prayer and spoken word. If you are a visitor, I encourage you to stop by Connection Point in the Atrium to obtain more information about our church. Again, thank you for being with us!

The 40-day season of Lent is a time when Christians all over the world renew their loyalty to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through acts of repentance. The word Lent means “spring,” and it signals the reawakening of our souls, of God’s renewing love that breaks through our waywardness and sins. For us to get to the glorious resurrection that awaits us, there are doors to open so this sacred season can have meaning and purpose. Our series, Doors to Open, is an opportunity for us to enter into the new life that awaits us, for “if anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

How sure are you when it comes to knowing what God said or didn’t say in the Bible? Let’s face it—even the most knowledgeable Christians have difficulties distinguishing fact from fiction and truth from nontruth. How good are you at being able to identify misleading quotes and stories that have somehow filtered into the mainstream of God’s Word and teachings? It is truly amazing how the “accumulated baggage” of not knowing what God said has weighed us down as modern-day disciples. This three-week sermon series is designed to open our eyes and better our understanding of what God did and didn’t say about happiness, the burdens we bear, and yes, money! You don’t want to miss this entertaining and enlightening series!

When God created the “heavens and the earth,” every living thing that was made was designed to grow. It is the natural order and cycle of life. But growth can be both physical and spiritual, and this is where the summons of Jesus comes to us, inviting us to become more like Him by choosing an intentional path that leads to life. When we cultivate our faith, love for each other and our neighbor, we discover the true meaning of life, and we discover more about ourselves. Join us as we accept Christ’s invitation to grow together, thereby fulfilling God’s great design that every living thing should have life in all of its abundance.

Our Christmas Eve worship services are some of the most cherished and beautiful gatherings in the life of our church. These services signal that we have reached our limits with the busyness of the season—the gift buying is over, our families are together, and we can finally focus on celebrating the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ! This Christmas Eve, we go in search of the light that illumines our world and our lives, and our presence here tonight proclaims that no matter how dismal things may be, the light of Christ shines in the midst of our darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Have you ever thought about how much time we spend searching for things like our car keys, a special restaurant, or that hard-to-find ingredient for the next recipe? Little do we realize that on a deeper level, we are also searching for direction, happiness, comfort, peace and the answers to life’s problems. During this Advent season, we invite you to join us as we begin a journey that will help us find what we are looking for, and our search ends at a cradle in Bethlehem where our Savior Jesus Christ is born!

Isaiah is one of the greatest Old Testament prophets of the Bible. His name literally means, “The Lord is my salvation,” and he was called to be a prophet. Into this role stepped a sinful and ill-prepared servant who caught a glimpse of One so holy that when asked, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” the servant Isaiah said, “Here am I! Send me!” In this series, we will hear his message in relation to our own lives. God still calls and commissions us to bring glory and praise to Him.

The first Sunday in November is observed throughout the Christian world as All Saint’s Sunday, a time when we remember those who have died in the faith and who are now in union with God as members of the “Church triumphant.” We set aside this sacred day to honor the memory of those we have loved and lost. The gift of the Church belongs to us because of the “great cloud of witnesses” who surround us and who speak to us in our memories. Today we celebrate their witness and give praise and thanksgiving to God for allowing them to grace our lives.

Hope is a powerful word. It lives within all of us. Jesus Christ touched lives and offered hope through His words and His actions. He healed the blind and the leper, He offered living water, and He gave us salvation and eternal life through His death on the cross. This week we welcome Dr. John Hull who will bring his inspiring message of hope. Hope Lives through Us as we offer it to others here and around the world.

The essence of our sermon series, Becoming, is best captured by the pen of Dr. Gardner Taylor. He writes, “There hangs over each of us the awareness of moving toward something, of becoming something far finer than we have ever been. Ah, we may wince, but we are never for long free of that yearning to become better, that instinctive squirming to be let loose from some imprisoning and crippling web in which we are caught. This sense of inward struggle toward something, of awareness of some huge, approaching wonder forms the basis for the earth’s finest literature, informs and indwells the world’s worthiest crusades and fashions the splendor, the most glorious splendor of humanity.”

Good morning church! You have no idea how excited I am to witness how God is going to move during this new season for our church. I am so humbled and grateful for the privilege of serving God’s people as the new Senior Pastor. I just want you to know that we will continue to be a church that passionately proclaims God’s Word as we follow our mission to reach people for Jesus, disciple them in faith and help those in need. We are so glad you joined us today! Get ready to dive in to God’s Word and see where it takes us!

Today I share with you my last sermon as Senior Pastor. What a blessing it has been to serve you and to lead this church. This will not be a sad day, but a day of celebration because we have so much to be thankful for. What an honor to celebrate all who have come to faith, the difference our church has made in the world, and the bright future ahead. But in all that we celebrate, my greatest joy has been the privilege to tell the story of Jesus Christ.

He currently serves as Associate Pastor of Discipleship at First Methodist Church in Waco, Texas. The resurrection of Jesus on that first Easter morning goes to the heart of everything Christians hold dear and sacred. The empty tomb is the bedrock and foundation of our faith. As the Apostle Paul writes, “And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.” (1 Corinthians 15:14) However, if we view Easter as the conclusion of Jesus’ ministry, we run the risk of missing out on some of the most important appearances that He makes following His resurrection. His words and actions during those days represent another side of the resurrection story that even most well-intentioned Christians miss. Bishop Hayes covers the “Rest of the Story,” as he shares why those days still hold importance and significance for us.

Welcome to our Easter worship service. Resurrection Sunday is the foundation of our faith and hope. May you feel God’s presence in this space and encounter the Holy Spirit through the traditional music, prayer and spoken word. Everything we do is rooted in the Good News of Jesus Christ. We strive to be the kind of church described in the Bible — one that offers practical, meaningful teaching; a source of true friendships; and care for those in need. If you are a visitor and enjoyed your time with us, we’d love to have you become more involved in our community of faith. I encourage you to visit Connection Point in the lobby outside the Sanctuary main entrance or go online for information about small groups, Bible studies and ministry programs for all ages. Thank you for joining us!

Happy Valentine’s Day! This day is dedicated to the one we love with all the romance and roses, chocolate and Hallmark cards, steak dinners and dinner bills, etc. It is a good day to talk about marriage. Dr. Stew Grant, Pastor of Marriage and Family Ministry, shares why marriage is more than how the world sells it, and why faith has always been the intent of God’s design. Whether you are married or unmarried, God has a message of unity in marriage to share with everyone.

As finite humans, we cannot comprehend the plans of our infinite God. Right when we think we’ve got our lives perfectly lined out, God wakes us up, shakes us up, and sends us in a completely different direction. In the moment, we may say, “I don’t understand.” But God does. And He is asking us to have faith in His provision and providence. Today, Loft Pastor Daniel Lumpee shares with us his story. It’s a story of things that don’t make sense unless a perfect and Holy God is involved. We hope his story encourages you to have faith in the future God has for His Church.

Light breaks through darkness. As we enter a new year and look to a brighter tomorrow, we need that light to shine bright. We know it is the light of Christ, the power of the Holy Spirit that ignites within us, equipping us to reflect our faith and God’s grace. Once we experience this spark of light, we are inspired to share it with others and to create something bold and new. In our stewardship series, we’ll learn how God’s light ignites our passion for ministry, our spirit of generosity and our reach to the world so we can have hope for the future.

For most people, the end of 2020 can’t get here fast enough! It has pushed us to our limits in every aspect of our lives—spiritually, emotionally, physically and mentally. It has been a year of bad news on top of bad news. However, the God we serve has been at work on our behalf, and in this Christmas season brings us the Good News that “unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given!” It’s the very best news we need to hear, for it represents the light we need that shines in the darkness of these difficult times. Hear the good news and be encouraged.

Throughout this very difficult year, the one word that has sustained us has been the word “hope.” It is the most precious of all human emotions, allowing our faith to believe that at any moment the God we serve will make Himself known, fulfilling our expectations. The season of Advent is that moment! It is our confirmation that God has heard our prayers and is giving us His only begotten Son, our Savior,
who is Christ the Lord! Our hope has not been in vain. In these four weeks leading up to Christmas, our sermon series – Hope Revealed – will examine God’s promise, presence and purpose, culminating in the person of Jesus Christ!

All Saints’ Day is a long-standing Christian celebration that stems from the belief that there is a powerful spiritual bond that connects us with those who have gone to be with God in the “Church triumphant.” It is a day when we pause and give God solemn thanks for the lives and deaths of His saints. This year, so many of us have walked “through the valley of the shadow of death,” or we have known someone who has been personally affected by the loss of a loved one. Bishop Bob Hayes has a special message for this sacred day of remembrance and celebration of life beyond death.

Conformity is a shallow way to live. It is an abdication of selfhood. It is a passive way of existence, letting the world squeeze you into its mold — thinking for you, setting your values, dictating your tastes. Christians are not immune to the pressure to conform. While times have changed, human nature hasn’t, and the world is still trying to put its stamp of conformity on every follower of Jesus. Join us as we learn how to live our lives following the example of the only one who truly matters – Jesus Christ.

This is an amazing church! It is amazing because of our faithfulness to God’s calling and direction to love our neighbor and to spread the Gospel message of Jesus Christ both here and around the world. We are blessed by His love so that we can share that love with those who don’t know Him and with those in need. This week we welcome Dr. John Hull who will bring his inspiring message of hope. Hope lives through you and The Woodlands United Methodist Church!

As the oldest book of the Bible, it seems fitting that Job deals with the age old questions that all human beings ponder at some point: Why do bad things happen? Where is God in the midst of sorrow and difficulty? And more specifically, why do bad things happen to me? Job asks these same questions amidst the worst set of circumstances one could imagine. Stripped of everything – family, prosperity, health – Job cries out to God with honest questions. And when God responds, from a whirlwind of all places, God takes Job on a tour of creation to teach him some immutable truths about who God is and where we can find peace, comfort and even hope in the worst of life’s storms. Join us for this series on the Book of Job as we look for hope in the midst of our own faith journeys.
