Rules changes Targeting All elements of targeting must be present in review, otherwise it will be overturned. Added “attacking” piece to targeting definition; deals with intent instead of incidental contact Repeat offender: on 3rd targeting foul, player will automatically receive a one game suspension following their missing of a half due to targeting call
Overtime Starting with the 5th overtime period, teams will alternate two-point attempts until winner is determined
Kickoff return blocking No more two-man wedge
Celebration penalty - THIS ONE’S GOING TO GET HAIRY Horns down no longer a foul, kind of “It depends. It’s like any unsportsmanlike act. If somebody scores quickly, turns to their cheering section, and it’s quick and they move on, we’re not going to do anything with that. If it’s to a bench or to another player, and it’s prolonged, it would be an unsportsmanlike. Like any play, there is a degree, who it’s directed at, if they do it in their bench area, we’re not going to look at it. It would be like any other celebration foul, so it has to be like any other foul we have.” - Greg Burks, Big 12 Officials Coordinator
Blind Side blocks Near elimination of all blind side blocks “When it comes to a matter of safety we’re always going to err on the side of safety. So we want the player to behave to where you can push them, shove them, not drop a shoulder or a torso and get the same effect to spring the ball carrier without delivering a blow that might hurt somebody.”

This week we discuss the new contract extension for Texas Tech men's basketball coach Chris Beard, as well as his recent recruiting successes. The Red Raider baseball team is fresh off a sweep of the Oklahoma State Cowboys and look to travel to Norman this weekend for the last road series of the season. Fans may be a little disappointed by the performance thus far, but you are still in contention for a national seed to host a Super Regional. Let that sink in that fans may be disappointed in the season and you're still within reach of being a national seed. Matt Wells named 16 football players as team captains. That feels like too many.

Basketball TTU goes down to WVU 79-74 in the Big 12 Tourney https://texastech.com/boxscore.aspx?id=14423&path=mbball WVU looked tough against OU the night before. Michael LaBarre and Kyle Jacobson join Spencer for some instant reaction podcasting after the Texas Tech Red Raider men's basketball team absolutely destroy the Kansas Jayhawks 91-62. This was the biggest loss for the Jayhawks under Bill Self and the largest margin of victory for Tech over any ranked opponent. This game was absolutely nuts and Tech led the entire way. Their stifling defense only allowed Kansas to score 20 first half points, trailing by 25 at the break, and they never really got closer in the second half. Tech shot an insane 62% from 3 and just kept answering anytime Kansas would hit a 3 and would look like they were trying to start a run of their own. Texas Tech moves into second place in the Big 12 conference with 4 games to go. They firmly hold their destiny in their hands and need to handle their business at home against Oklahoma State and Texas, and then on the road versus TCU and Iowa State.

We welcome Keith Patrick on this week's podcast to preview a little baseball and announce a special project he's been working on for all of you. Tech baseball has 3 preseason All-Americans, plus one of the best incoming recruiting classes in the country. We can't wait for the first pitch on February 15. The football team had a couple of midterm enrollees make it to campus from this most recent signing period, Trevor Roberson and Simon Gonzalez. Getting Gonzalez on campus early will surely pay dividends with how much David Yost utilizes the tightend position. We also preview the upcoming post on StakingThePlains about what the Keith Patterson defense will look like, some terminology, and where some of the current players might project in this new scheme. Chris Beard is such a perfect cultural fit in West Texas and at Texas Tech that it almost doesn't make sense for him to entertain offers anywhere else. He is also destroying it on social media lately with his Fireside Chats. We talk about the upcoming game versus the Iowa State Cyclones and the road trip to Baylor. We answer all of your questions, as always.

Plucky underdog Clemson Tigers outmatch the Alabama Crimson Tide to win the 2018 national championship. In somewhat stunning fashion, the Crimson Tide are handed their largest margin of defeat under Nick Saban. Former Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury was named the Arizona Cardinals (or is it Kardinals?) head coach today after spending nearly a month as the offensive coordinator for the USC Trojans. Josh Jung named was named to a preseason All-America list as the baseball season is closing in. We're sure this isn't the last for Jung and the Red Raider baseball team. The men's basketball team takes down the Kansas State Wildcats and Oklahoma Sooners at home and move to 14-1, 3-0 on the season. We are recording during the second half of the game and get some instant reaction in the middle of the episode as the Red Raiders close out the victory. Soo many Kliff Kingsbury questions.

We're nearing the end of the first full year of the 23 Personnel Podcast and it's been a ride! We recently picked up some new equipment to help the podcast continue to grow, provide a high quality podcast, and to be able to more easily bring on guests in the future. Texas Tech men's basketball team takes down the West Virginia Mountaineers in Morgantown for the first time since WVU joined the conference. We have some instant reaction. The women's basketball team is off to a hot start as they've already surpassed the win total for 2017 before starting conference play. They also recently picked up a 5* transfer from UCONN in Lexi Gordon, who should be a big time addition when she becomes eligible after sitting out. The men's basketball team returns home to face Kansas State and will host OU on the night we record again. The football season is nearing an end with one final college game left, the national championship between Alabama and Clemson. We discuss our thoughts on the latest bowl games, the playoffs, and why we're ready for the spring sports season to pick up. Finally, "Kiss Sexbury" is trying to be made a thing as Kliff Kingsbury is reportedly interviewing for a couple of NFL jobs, including the head coaching position for the New York Jets. And no, none of that is a joke.

McDonald is back, mostly, after missing last week with a cough. Spencer still stands by what he said about LaBarre's comments two weeks ago. We wrap up our Christmas vacations and discuss some odd present giving from Spencer's mom. Texas Tech couldn't get past Duke last week in Madison Square Garden, even though Jarrett Culver led all scorers with 25 points and Zion Williamson fouled out. One more nonconference game before Big 12 play starts on Wednesday, 1/2 on the road. Texas Tech signed 11 commits to during the early signing period and are in good shape to land the previously committed recruits. 2017 Freshman All-American Nevada WR McLane Mannix announced his transfer to Texas Tech.

LaBarre joins the episode this week to defend himself. For the record, we don't always insult or make fun of LaBarre - he just has awful takes. He also joins to help us break down the early signing period for the 2019 recruiting class and what Wells and Co. have been able to put/keep together in their first few weeks on the job. We also discover the possibility of Tech actually running a play from a 23 personnel package is significantly greater than with the previous coaching staff. The coaching staff contract and salary details were recently released. The men's basketball team is preparing to take on the no. 2 Duke Blue Devils in Madison Square Garden. We answer your questions and go into some detail about the things we learned this week.

We start by ranking our top 5 all time movie vehicles. We probably should have been a little more specific with the word "vehicle," but we address that better in our Q&A segment. We give some recruiting updates with Wells and staff on the road as the early signing period is approaching. Antoine Wesley has declared for the NFL draft. Basketball season is in full swing. Two games are left on the schedule before heading to NYC to tip off against Duke. Tech is still undefeated and has won every matchup by double figures. We answer your questions and let you know what we've learned this week.

We're starting to setting into the football off season with weekend activities not centered around Texas Tech football. We'll have basketball most Saturdays, but the end of football for Tech came far too soon this season. Texas Tech basketball is up to #13 in the AP poll while Erik Haslam has both the Tech offense and defense slated as #23. We discuss the distinct possibility that Tech will be in the top 10 going into the matchup with Duke in Madison Square Garden. Basketball discussion begins at 18:40. This past weekend, new head football coach Matt Wells had his introductory press conference and offensive coordinator David Yost as well as defensive coordinator Keith Patterson were made available to the media. We also heard from true freshman QB Alan Bowman for the first time. All parties involved left good impressions, with probably Patterson's leaving the most to be desired as he's not as much of a known quantity. We also try to address the recruiting issues with Tech losing verbal commits and why it doesn't indicate the sky is falling...yet. Football discussion starts at 36:15. We answer your questions, including which flavor of candy cane is best. Questions begin at 1:15:30.

You'll have to consume this episode in pieces as we laid it all out there and didn't really concern ourselves with a time limit. Sunday morning, November 25, Kliff Kingsbury is officially relieved of his coaching duties at Texas Tech. It was as amicable a firing and parting ways as possible. Much love and luck to Kingsbury to wherever he lands. The basketball team is off to Miami on Monday to face Memphis. They are currently ranked in all major polls in the top 20, and currently leading the country in some new fangled metric called the NCAA NET. But everyone has all of their attention on football and the search for the next head coaching candidate. We discuss each and every coaching candidate we've heard mentioned with a connection to the open position at Tech. Most of these are just rumors and nothing is in stone or writing yet. Smoke is that Tech and Hocutt will be nearing a decision before we record again next week. Hang on as we ride this thing together.

We're joined this week by 23 Personnel Podcast insider, Preston. We're gearing up for the Thanksgiving holiday and discuss favorite foods. We touch on the basketball schedule, including a home game this weekend against Northern Colorado. The Texas Tech football team is wrapping up their final preparations for game no. 12 this week against the Baylor Bears. Both teams are coming into the game at 5-6, meaning the winner is headed off to a bowl game and the loser's season is done. We also discuss Kingsbury's propensity to take a knee and what an awful idea it is if you're not winning the game. Of course, we address all of your comments and questions.

It's time to blow this whole thing up. No coach is safe. The Kliff Kingsbury era should absolutely come to an end. You fall to 5-6, 3-5 on the season after losing an disgusting game in Manhattan. It doesn't even matter what happens next weekend against Baylor at this point.

We're in that glorious part of the year where we have multiple sports to talk about, not to mention Thanksgiving being right around the corner. For those of you that listen to music on Spotify, you can now find the podcast there so you don't have to leave your preferred platform to listen to us ramble. The men's basketball team is now 3-0 after defeating Mississippi Valley State and Southeastern Louisiana. They will take on USC in tournament play next week, plus one of Missouri State and Nebraska. Before we get into the KSU preview, we touch on whether Duffey is a product of his talents or Kingsbury's system. We also note that Antoine Wesley will likely finish this season with the second best record for receiving yards in a single season at Texas Tech, behind only Michael Crabtree's 2007 season. This is also when we have a drop in the audio from the batteries going out on the recorder, so you'll just have to imagine we had a great discussion off the air. Grant Thome from the EMAWdio Podcast joins us to preview the game this weekend against the Kansas State Wildcats. Thanks for joining the show, Grant. If you want to hear his interview with Seth, check out his podcast on Soundcloud and on GoPowerCat.com. Then we answer and react to all of your questions and comments this week. This section starts around minute 47, so if you're not down to clown with our questions and Thanksgiving food hot takes, this is where you can check out.

Commiserate with us. Jett Duffey gets the start and puts up a combined 524 yards but you get Crabtreed with Texas scoring the game-winning touchdown with just seconds left in the game. You fought back from being down by 17 points at two different times late in this game, but couldn't summit the mountain and defeat the Longhorns. You fall to 5-5 and 3-4 on the season. Your 2018 home football season is over and you continue the streak of not beating a conference foe not named Kansas at home, now for 3 straight seasons. In fact, in Kingsbury's 6 years, you have only won 7 Big 12 home games (3 of those being against the Jayhawks).

This week, McDonald thought he was better than us and left us to go to Georgia for some unknown reason. LaBarre fills in and besides struggling to come up with an intro topic and answer the question "What did we learn," he fared admirably. In fact, he brought so much sports knowledge, we didn't even need a food intro topic. First, we discuss how fall baseball is going as we're in the middle of the Red & Black series. Somehow, Josh Jung is getting better. This team may be loaded on offense this season and could be really fun to watch. There are a TON of new names to familiarize yourself with before February. The Tech basketball season tipped off tonight and absolutely laid waste to UIW 87-37 behind a 48-7 second half. Mooney is still coming into himself as an offensive threat, although he scored 12 points tonight. Tariq Owens flexed his defensive muscles and led the team with 6 blocks, 3 in one possession. Next game will be Friday against Mississippi Valley State. We preview the Longhorns and discuss how the stats are in agreement this week that Tech is probably the better team. We both think the game will be a close one, a little lower scoring, but LaBarre sees Texas getting the advantage over Duffey behind center.

The Red Raiders fall at home to no. 7 Oklahoma Sooners 51-46. Alan Bowman sustains a reinjury to his partially collapsed lung in the fist half and Duffey is unable to lead the team to a victory. You fall to 5-4 (3-3) on the season with the Longhorns coming to Lubbock next weekend.

The restaurant serving Lubbock's best fried cheese closed this weekend, but it wasn't because we weren't patrons. Also, for those lost in the football season, the basketball season tips off this week with a charity exhibition game, and the baseball team starts their annual Red-Black series as well. Michael is completely dominated in fantasy this week, but somehow still leads the season point totals. We're joined for the Sooner preview portion of the episode by Jay from @RedDirtSport. If you're looking at the stat comparisons for this game, we tell you why those might be misleading. We answer every single one of your questions, the main reason our show was long this week. We wrap up the episode by hearing Michael lament about Hulu not letting him fast forward through a sporting event that is no longer live. He also rejoiced in what he's hoping was his last mowing of the season. He also tells us of yet another example of Christmas invading other holiday's time.

Fair warning: the language in the first few minutes of the episode is not suitable for children. I'm sorry, it gets better, but it was about as explicit as it gets for the first few minutes. I'm not sure where you go from here, besides talk some solace in that when your defense wasn't called for mind-numbingly stupid drive-sustaining penalties, they were pretty good today. Special teams was pretty good outside of DeQuan Bowman letting a kickoff bounce. Bowman wasn't accurate. Your offensive line couldn't pass protect or run block. I'm not even sure Kevin Johns made the trip to Ames. You barely averaged more than a yard per carry. Your QB couldn't hit wide open receivers. Your open receivers couldn't make the routine catches when the ball got to them. The officials were what they were.

Spencer challenges the listeners to download this week's episodes a total of 1,500 times or more in order to make him shave his beard. Michael made his broadcast radio debut this week on the Rob Breaux show and plugged STP and the podcast very well. Rob's show may even ask him to come back on the show. Michael torches Spencer in fantasy again this week behind a strong performance by KaVontae Turpin, who was just removed from the TCU football team for some really despicable actions, if they turn out to be true. We are not joined by an Iowa State expert to preview the Cyclones, but we do have stats and we dive deep into the stats to justify our stances on how this game will play out this week. Interestingly, the line for this game continues to move and at the time of recording, had moved all the way down to ISU -3.5. We break down the Red Raiders victory over the Kansas Jayhawks 48-16. With the win, Texas Tech moves to 5-2 on the season and 3-1 in Big 12 conference play. Alan Bowman makes his first start since leaving the game versus West Virginia and has himself a day. It was good to see him knock some rust off before heading up to Ames to face the Cyclones next week. The Red Raider defense continues to impress, despite giving up two second half touchdowns. The Jayhawks were held to 3 first half points and the final touchdown came with 11 seconds before the final whistle. We read and respond to all of your questions and reactions you sent in after the game.

With this cold weather in Lubbock, we both made pots of chili and swap recipes for the good stuff. Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa announced on Tuesday that he would forego the rest of this season to prepare for the NFL draft. This is probably the earliest we've seen a player do this in season and Michael and Spencer have very different takes on this. We start looking at the game this week versus Kansas and why this might be a little more tricky to navigate than in years past. We're joined on the KU preview by KU Director of Broadcasting and "Voice of the Jayhawks" Brian Hanni. Red Raider fans should be familiar with Hanni after he spent 4 years in Lubbock covering Texas Tech and being the play-by-play voice for the men's hoops and baseball teams. We wrap up with your questions about possible expansion targets, how we liked our chicken wings cooked, the stat that best indicates defensive improvement for Texas Tech, and what % we think Bowman plays this weekend.

Quick turnaround this week as the game is on Thursday night. We cover things from tossing tortillas, to the new chairman of the Board of Regents, to if Alan Bowman can fly with the team. We also preview the TCU Horned Frogs. It appears both teams are down to backup QBs (or third stringers in Tech's case), but the situation isn't as dire as that might sound. We're picking a close, low-scoring game where turnovers may play a huge role in the outcome. Also, our fences are swollen shut after all the rain this past week.

Today was rough. Watching this game was draining, and not because you got blown out, but because you were just so bad in the first half and nearly made the miraculous comeback in the second; because you lost another starting QB; because you started off slow again; and because people are calling for Kingsbury to be fired and we defend him today. We hope things are OK with Alan Bowman, but everything I've heard (from extremely credible media sources) points elsewhere. We've got about 10 days until the next game and plenty of things to work and focus on to get ready for the trip to Ft Worth. Let's get right, get healthy, cut out the drops, the slow starts, and get this thing rolling.

We have to settle on what kind of pie we would want more, the best filling with OK crust, or best crust with OK filling. Football news, including Vasher's likelihood of playing on Saturday and possible rotations. Ridiculous stat projections for a true freshman QB and how it puts The Greatest Bowman on an island all to himself. We're joined to preview the West Virginia Mountaineers by Jorden from the Country Roads Webcast. Our side of the preview will be available later this week. Your Red Raiders came to play tonight. They defeat the favored Cowboys 41-17 in Stillwater behind an unbelievable defensive performance where OSU scored their final points of the game after only 5 minutes into the second quarter. Your defense pitched a 40-minute shutout, on the road, to a ranked team. Bowman was simply fantastic again. Not a record-setting performance, but you can't have those every week. He did throw his first two interceptions of the season, but otherwise was definition of cool, calm and collected. On to West Virginia

Texas Tech was beat soundly by the Ole Miss Rebels in Houston to start the 2018 season. The Red Raiders were outplayed in all three phases of the game. Starting QB McLane Carter is injured and carted off the field in the first quarter and replaced by true freshman Alan Bowman. The hyped defense wasn't anything to be excited about. They allowed a 200 yard rusher, the first for Ole Miss since 2010. The did force and recover one turnover. The offense was iffy, even under Carter before he went down. Penalties were down, but they were big, undisciplined - three targeting penalties. Several extended Ole Miss drives or ended Tech drives. Tech will host Lamar next weekend, so the offense and QB should get some time to develop some chemistry if Carter's injury is as serious as it looked. The defense will need to buckle down and the special teams...woof. It may be time to start adjusting 2018 W/L predictions

Details emerge surrounding the "retirement" of Texas Tech Chancellor Robert Duncan. It would appear Rick Perry, a known TAMU Aggie, meddled in the affairs of Texas Tech and somehow convinced 5 of the 9 Regents on the Board to vote to remove Duncan as Chancellor. It would appear the Aggies are still scared to face any competition in anything they do. Texas Tech signed contract extensions with several key coaches around the program, including Tim Tadlock. Tadlock's contract puts him in the upper realms of salaries for collegiate coaches, and continues to demonstrate the admin's faith and support of his program. Defensive back grad transfer John Bonney announces he is leaving the Texas Longhorns and will play his final season of eligibility of the Red Raiders. We discuss our last break from the show before we dive into the 2018 show and how great it was to get away from cell reception for a week. The Dave Campbell's Texas Football 2018 magazine/book was recently released and we discussed the Texas Tech preview. There is an interesting schedule prediction in terms of wins and losses that we disagree with. Lots of great content to carry us rabid college football fans to September 1. Some great listener questions, including what our expectations should be if the Big 12 is indeed down this year (and why Tech maybe should expect more), and the betting odds on the starting Texas Tech QB for game one versus Ole Miss. Michael is getting closer to cutting the cord with Suddenlink and moving into the "streaming-only" category as a media consumer. I'm probably not far behind. Gabe Holt received yet another honor for his 2018 campaign as he was selected to Baseball America's First Team Freshman All-American Team. Two more basketball players have signed professional contracts overseas. Chris Beard also was overseas to see Davide Moretti play for the Italian national team. Big 12 Media Days was this week and Texas Tech was represented by Dakota Allen, Travis Bruffy, JaDeion High and JahShawn Johnson. Tech had three players (all defensive) selected to the Preseason All Big 12 team and a certain Texas homer is butthurt about it. After celebrating this country's Independence Day, we discuss all things 23 for this the 23rd episode of the 23 Personnel Podcast. The deadline for drafted baseball players to sign with their teams has come and gone and all but one player has signed with their team and will not return - Caleb Killian. Summer basketball is in full swing and Zhaire Smith is continuing to kill it. The Texas Tech basketball staff has been completed and they continue to add players to this year's recruiting class. We even talk about high level recruits and how we as fans are going to have to accept antics like announcement videos with these types of players. As we're nearing only 50 days until the 2019 football season kicks off, we talk about the surge of recruits Tech has been able to land lately, some NCAA rule changes (including transfers and redshirts), Big 12 Media Days, and additional bowls added to the 2020 season. We're starting to plan the fantasy, head-to-head draft and we'll likely host the draft "live" on the podcast. As summer has officially started this week, we start off by discussing our favorite flavors of ice cream. We put a bow on the 2018 baseball season. The Red Raiders finished their season in Omaha with a record of 45-20. In my book, any baseball season that ends in Omaha is a good one. There is nothing to be disappointed about with how this season turned out and we have nothing but high expectations of this team moving forward. We also discuss the NBA Draft as Texas Tech had their first ever one and done player in Zhaire Smith. Keenan Evans and Zach Smith also landed on NBA summer teams. The 2018 football season predictions and projections season starts off with Bill Connelly's not-so-rosy outlook for the Red Raiders.

Texas Tech is gearing up to host a regional tournament against Louisville, Kent State, and New Mexico State. WIth Tech's position as the number one seed and limited starting pitching depth, we think they should probably pitch the series backwards and take advantage of playing the no. 4 seed. The basketball recruiting class should be finalized soon with three players left on the board with probably two spots left. Preston asks why Kingsbury can't seem to recruit well and we decide he just needs to win more to help that out. We actually answer listener questions in this episode, including why Tadlock started Sublette in the Big 12 tournament, what might be wrong with Davis Martin, and if we'll see that in the regional. McDonald asks how excited we are for Cavs v Warriors, round 4. Hint: not at all.

The unwritten rules in baseball are discussed after watching Kody Clemens break them in a win over TCU this past weekend. Here are our top 10: Don’t talk to a pitcher about a no-hitter in progress Don’t steal or bunt when game is out of hand (4+ runs either way) Don’t “pimp” (admire) a homerun (look at, bat flip, celebrate around bases, etc.) Don’t show up the umpire or teammates Don’t stare down a batter after a strikeout Don’t step on the pitcher’s mound Don’t bunt to break up a no hitter Don't run up the score in a blowout Don’t slide hard into second with your cleats up (DO) Hit batters in retribution Do you like the unwritten rules? Did we miss some? Tell us! Texas Tech held their spring commencement ceremonies this past weekend and there were 41 Red Raider athletes graduating. Congrats! The baseball team will be up in Bricktown for the Big 12 Baseball Tournament this week and we dicsuss the Red Raiders' pitching rotation and bracket matchups. This week in Going Yard we talk about pulling weeds and breaking out the mower for the first time.

After returning from a trip to the Pacific Northwest, Spencer and Michael compile a list of things that make Texans unique and special. We determined that you need to at least check off 10 items on the list of 15: Knows pecan is the state tree Like pecan pie Knows mockingbirds are the state birds Hates mockingbirds Owns a pickup Has visited the Alamo Unhealthy obsession with queso Owns/flies “Come and Take It” flag Primarily eats ranch dressing on salads and as a dip Knows to wave on FM roads and smaller Opens doors All carbonated beverages are called “cokes” Texas chili does not have beans Love of TexMex and brisket Frito Pie, bean dip, Big Red Let us know what items you check off and what we may have missed. The baseball team is unfortunately in the midst of a crippling slump that may see the season end much too soon if the momentum isn't turned. The talent is there for a run in Omaha, but the team will need to be much more consistent to even make it out of the regional stage. Win totals were released for the Big 12 this week and we look at where Tech was slated with a total of 5.5. Michael and Spencer both took the under as we go through the schedule game by game. We also quickly go over the rest of the Big 12. How in the world is Kansas and Baylor supposed to combine for a total of 8 wins?

We start this week's mailbag with building the best ever Tech offense from players in Tech history (1 QB, 1 RB, 5 WR). We discuss which team had better position groups: 2017 or 2018. We talk about how the defense might fare without a key player or two. And finally, we discuss the hypothetical of giving up all other sports if it were to guarantee a national championship.

We rank our top three school cafeteria foods from elementary school. Michael had much more fond memories of cafeteria food growing growing up than Spencer did. We both listed the weird shapes of pizza we were served, but our other items were much different. After rewatching the Spring Football Game, Spencer noticed that the offensive line typically was pulling a lineman. We don't remember Tech doing this as often prior to this season, so this may be something new to watch for this season as Tech may be more heavily relying on the run game. Baseball won the series against OU and move up into second place in the conference. WIth series still remaining on the road against a depleted TCU team, home vs Texas, and on the road in Stillwater, Tech has their work cut out for them if they have plans on three-peating as Big 12 conference champs.

Seth hung around for the mailbag edition of this week's episode to answer some tough questions about the QB race, football position groups, best situation for Zhaire Smith, Chris Beard possibly putting pressure on Kingsbury to succeed and if Tech in '15/'16 would have had a bigger impact with Michael Crabtree on that team or if DeAndre Washington was on the '08 team. Who is the favorite in the QB race heading into the fall? Is there a chance we'll be relying on our amazing defense to carry the football team through the fall to a bowl game? Does the success that Beard has had with MBB put even more pressure on KK to produce this year or else? What position group got you most excited about their future? Which #NBA team/roster is best fit for Zhaire Smith? Bigger impact: sophomore Crabtree on Mahomes '15 squad or senior DeAndre Washington on Harrell '08 squad? what's a college stadium/game that's on your bucket list to see?

Seth C of StakingthePlains.com joins us to discuss Zhaire Smith announcing that he will be signing with an agent and officially declare for the NBA draft. We wish him nothing but success as he pursues dreams of playing in the Association. The baseball team took full advantage of poor teams and pitching these past four games as they plated 76 runs. Josh Jung, Grant Little, Cody Farhat, Michael Davis, Cameron Warren and Zach Rheams all mashed homeruns this weekend. Grant Little tied the school record for RBIs in a single game at 9, while Brian Klein tied the school record for runs scored. Josh Jung hit for the Red Raiders' first cycle since 2008 against New Mexico on Tuesday. Spring football came to an end with the spring game this past weekend. Seth, Michael, LaBarre and Spencer watched the game together and we discussed the positions we were most impressed and excited for. We think Tech will rely more on the defense and the run game this season rather than the QB and receivers. The Big 12 might not have the stellar QB play, which will help Tech break in a new QB and receiving core.

We don't know why LaBarre's food takes are such trash, but we talk about our favorite food condiments and how his are disgusting. It's easily hot sauce (not salsa) and homemade ranch. Brian asks what our favorite cooking tools are and we decided meat thermometers (Michael's is wireless - he boujy) and special pans. New Market Streets are opening with bars (beer, wine and chicken wings) and if we would consider moving to be closer to one - yes. What new restaurants are on our list and how we might need to make a visit to Durango's. There is an upcoming vote on the building formerly known as the City Bank Coliseum and how we both think Lubbock should drop and and Tech should build something, anything, in its place. Preferably something that doesn't lose $600,000 a year. And sports questions including if HCKK will wear sunglasses and a hat to his next indoor interview, how we can bring Gingery back for his senior season, how likely Zhaire is to leave Tech, and how the Tech baseball team might be able to three-peat as Big 12 champions (unlikely).

Michael is rejoining the kids this week as he purchased his first gaming console in a decade. Every week it feels like we say we're going to wrap up the basketball season, but news comes out every week that needs to be discussed. This week, the Chris Ogden to UTA deal was finalized and he was officially hired to lead their basketball program. We wish Coach Ogden the very best of luck. Zhaire Smith is still being projected to go in the first round of the NBA draft and we talk about how he's likely gone. Recruiting never stops for Beard and his staff as they picked up a commitment from one of the best graduate transfers out there in Tariq Owens. Owens is a very versatile big man and we think he'll fit right in with what Beard is trying to build at Tech. The baseball team wraps up their 4-game road trip in Dallas against DBU. The umpires unfortunately take over the game and gift DBU two runs to help them take the lead. Tensions boiled over and Tim Tadlock is ejected, as well as Cody Masters. Over the weekend, it appears Kansas was unwilling to move the games at all to try to take advantage of Tech's record of struggling to play in cold and wet conditions. They're home this weekend against Kansas State and honestly should be expecting to sweep Purple Kansas. The football team is wrapping up spring practice this weekend with their final open practice/scrimmage, this time in Lubbock under the lights. Readers of Staking the Plains and listeners to the podcast will be meeting up in section 3, row 25ish to take in the spring game and discuss what our beloved Red Raider football team is doing on the field. If you know of any or are hosting a tailgate, be sure to let everyone know where you'll be so we can party together. A special mailbag episode will drop separately, so enjoy the "short" episode.

Is drinking unsweet tea the most unTexan thing you can do? Or is it liking Pepsi? What about NOT hating on New Mexico? Unfortnately, the basketball season ended with the Red Raiders being elimated in the Elite Eight matchup versus Villanova. Both Spencer and Michael think Nova is the best team left and will likely win the national championship. Keenan Evans reveals he actually broke his toe in the game against Baylor and was playing through the pain. Is Keenan Evans the best basketball player of all-time for Texas Tech? The answer is more difficult than you would think. The football team had an open practice/scrimmage in Midland this past Saturday, but the news didn't end there. Four players were arrested Sunday morning after an incident at Bash Riprocks. The players are still on the team but have been suspended indeifnitely. This certainly makes the battle for the starting QB position interesting, especially the longer the suspension is to last. The baseball team had a bounce back weekend as they hosted Northeastern and swept them in four games. The offense scored nearly 60 runs on the #8 RPI team. Conference play resumes this weekend in Lubbock as West Virginia comes to town. By the end of the weekend, the baseball season will be halfway over. We have a couple of listener questions, like whether we would put chips on sandwiches and if we're team breakfast burrito or team breakfast taco.

Chris Beard defeats Purdue...AGAIN. Beard was the coach at Arkansas-Little Rock when they knocked out the Boilermakers in a 12-over-5 upset. Texas Tech advances to the Elite Eight for the first time in school history. Tech takes down Purdue 78-65 in pretty convincing fashion. Tech got to a 5-point halftime lead and never let up. The Red Raiders closed the first half on a 10-0 run and kept the pressure on Purdue the entire second half. Justin Gray was HUGE in this game, scoring 12 points and grabbing 7 boards. Keenan Evans played a solid game, scored a little under his season average but 3 other Red Raiders scored in double figures around him. Such an impressive win all the way around. These guys are making history, getting hot and riding momentum in the right direction at the right time. Texas Tech is set to take on Villanova on Sunday at 1:20 p.m. for a shot to advance to the Final Four in San Antonio.

A new barbecue place opened recently in the 806 and we grabbed lunch there to give it a try. Green chiles were everywhere, meat was decent. Our verdict was that it was OK but there are some other pretty fine joints in town to get the 'cue. There was also some discussion on what needs sauce and what doesn't and who makes the best sauces (Whataburger, obviously). Texas Tech opened the NCAA tournament with wins over Stephen F Austin and Florida. Both games saw exciting plays from guards Keenan Evans and Zhaire Smith (who might be leaving after this season). Smith flying through the air for 360 dunks and alley oops are just things of beauty. Tech is getting ready to face Purdue in Boston in the Sweet Sixteen. The Boilermakers may be without their senior big man, Isaac Haas. He broke his elbow in the first round against CSU Fullerton and nearly gave it a go in the round of 32 game. His brace was disallowed by the NCAA and it's unlikely he will play again this season. Good news for Purdue is they have another big man backing up Haas, Matt Haarms. The baseball team wrapped up a vicious road trip in Waco to open Big 12 play and dropped the series to the Bears. The Red Raiders went 3-5 over the 8-game trip and look to bounce back against Northeastern this weekend. Spring football is still chugging along with an interesting battle at quarterback. Jett Duffey needs more reps and McLane Carter needs to cut down on his turnovers. Inside receiver and defensive back has great depth, but lots of unknown guys filling out the roster there. Defensive tackle is as deep as it's ever been. We're really looking forward to getting to watch a spring practice in person. Finally, we learned this week that Spencer is not much for camping for too long and that the OU band will play Boomer Sooner if it's the last thing they ever do.
