From 1887 to about 1913, East Sioux Falls thrived as a community near the Big Sioux River. Founded by C.W. Hubbard as Ives, it became East Sioux Falls, known for quarrying Sioux quartzite. The town prospered, shipping stone to various cities and attracting stonecutters from Europe. This was a company town and when quartzite was no longer in high demand the town quietly dissolved... Quarrying sure is a rocky business.

Sleepy Hallow had the headless horseman and Sioux Falls has a beheaded Union Civil War Soldier.... Statue. We are starting with the historical marker Seacoast Gun, but then we are hopping to the history of the location itself. There is not a historical marker for Lyon Park but there are some great plaques that talk about the park and its history and the little mystery of that statue. The Sioux Falls Regional Airport, was established in 1939 with a Works Progress Administration grant of $165,000. Soon three runways were constructed, along with a terminal building, and a hangar. There was an unsuccessful movement to name the airport "Tennant Field" in memory of World War 1 veteran pilot and early Sioux Falls aviator Harold Tennant.

Small towns are where everyone knows each others business but happens when bad blood turns into a cold blooded murder?
Platted by Benjamin Richards in 1888 naming the townsite after his sons Benjamin and Clarence the small town of Ben Clare was meant to be a spot where farmers could get supplies and ship crops on the railroad without going all the way to Sioux Falls. The townsite however gets sold to Frank Bowen and it's all downhill from there.
Beware this episode contains newspaper accounts of a murder.

An almost forgotten airport in the midst of what is now one of the busiest areas in Sioux Falls. This historical marker is hidden in plain sight on Kiwanis Ave near 46th street and tells us about the 21 year long run of Soo Skyways Airport.

Why does Melvin Grigsby have a historical marker in Mckennan Park? Because he owned a home there before it was a park, a home Helen Mckennan would later own, the same home she would donate along with the land for the park to the city in her will upon her death. The same donation that started the whole controversy we talked about in the episode A Park Born in Controversy.

Here is a little remembered piece of Sioux Falls South Dakota history. A several year wave of grasshopper invasions hit Dakota Territory but did you know these invasions were widespread from Canada to Texas?
Beginning in 1873, for four consecutive summers great swarms of grasshoppers riding prevailing winds reached the Midwestern states and territories where they landed and destroyed farmers' field crops. Although several huge clouds of grasshoppers passed over Sioux Falls the first year, damage was minimal in this area.
In both 1874 and 1876, however, an incalculable number of grasshoppers arrived, darkening the sky and making sounds similar to "thousands of scissors cutting and snipping." After landing, the large insects piled in some places to depths of five inches.
They devoured everything edible in their paths, including crops, door sashes, window sills, shovel handles, leather boots, and fence posts. The 'hoppers feasted on family vegetable gardens and stripped buildings of their paint. Without crops to sell to provide for future living and farm expenses and to pay for seed for next year's spring planting, thousands of rural families were destitute.
Immigration into Dakota Territory slowed to a trickle. After the second summer of devastation, a number of penniless settlers sold their farms, including the first owner of the land which today is Spellerberg Park

I think I should borrow the #hashtaghistory term of hasty history for this episode. From finding this historical marker and recording was about two hours, and part of that time was me getting a coffee. Some recent life experiences, and reading I had done heavily directed where this went. I don't think I will be this hasty again as I am not sure it was all together one thought, my apologies. Through previous historical markers we have learned about Judge Joseph B Amidon and his son William who were pioneering homesteaders in the budding Sioux Falls City and were killed by Native American warriors in 1862. We know Sioux Falls was soon evacuated, but first, they buried the bodies, so how are the bodies now missing? Lets read a few historical markers and piece together what we can, but I will let you know right now... The Amidon's are missing.

In some ways in my head I find it odd to have streets and historical markers named after someone in the wrong place at the wrong time but at the same time I get it. This story is disjointed but I think that makes sense in this scenario. I am so excited to tell you more about the Amidon's. This historical marker is an introduction to Philander Prescott. His name will come back up a few times in future historical markers, so after this you will know who they are talking about, because I don't know about you but I had never heard of this guy.
