The Old Testament prophets prophesied of the days that we live in today. The days when a doorway would be opened through the suffering of the Messiah to have our sins forgiven, and know Him for ourselves. Thus, the Old Testament prophets would look forward to the day when this Messiah would come to fulfill this promise, and we in like manner look backward at what Christ has done in fulfilling this promise of salvation through His work on the cross. What a great salvation we have!

Love and truth are inextricably connected. We have seen this to be true in our journey through the letters of John. Now, in his final short letter, we find an example of someone showing love by supporting truth.

We know that as Christians we are to walk in love with one another. It is a fundamental trademark of every Christian. We can often find, though, that we misapply the command to love, or we misinterpret what love is. What we will learn in 2 John is the need to walk in truth, and how this truth will lead to more loving relationships in the Christian community.

We have reached the end of our time in 1 John. Throughout this letter, we have been challenged, convicted, and comforted. By the grace of God, we are walking away from this letter with our assurance of salvation tested, leading to that blessed assurance that John is wanting his readers to have. John wraps up his letter with three final statements of certainty, and a final exhortation.

Our assurance of salvation has been tested throughout this letter, and now, by God's grace, we begin to see the good news of assurance tested - certainty. Of the greatest things we can come to have an assurance of, it is to be assured of God's love shown towards us. This is, in fact, the strongest basis for our assurance of salvation.

Christ's work on the cross saves us from the punishment of our sin, frees us from the power of sin, and places us at odds against sin.

C.S. Lewis said, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” In other words, if a light is on, if the sun is out, you know it not because someone told you so, but because you can see everything else by that light. In the same way, when the light of Christ has shone in our hearts, its effects can clearly be seen. We'll explore this in today's sermon.

"Blessed Assurance" is a familiar old hymn that many faithful saints have sung to the Lord over the years. Truly, an assurance of salvation is a priceless treasure, but how can we have this assurance? We want to have that blessed assurance, but first we must have our assurance tested.

Many times we do good works in an attempt to earn God's love. Yet, as we will see from our text, our motivation for good works is that we already have God's love in Jesus Christ.

The reality is, we cannot understand just how good God's goodness is until we understand how severe His wrath is.
