In this episode, Coach Dave discusses setbacks and how to deal with them. They can come in many ways.. injuries or health related issues, time constraints, family emergencies, etc. When they come up, how you deal with them is important. Dave speaks from experience having gone through many in his years in the sport, from a DNF at IRONMAN Canada in 2014 to most recently, an injury that has cost him from competing at the Cowtown 50K and IRONMAN 70.3 Boulder this season.

In the second segment, Dave discusses consistency. It's arguably the most important part of training and racing. Recently, Dave had a conversation with a friend and athlete who was not only doing their workouts, but they were over-training. The athlete was not understanding how their over-training was a bad thing, then Coach Dave explained that it's inconsistent and impacts everything following that session. It clicked with the athlete and things have improved. The bottom line is that consistency works both ways, you have to do your training and not skip or miss sessions too often and you have to resist the temptation to do more work than what is in the plan.

Finally, Dave spends a few minutes discussing the endurance community. In Dallas/Fort-Worth, there is a very strong community; one where clubs and coaching groups generally do a great job at working together. There are certainly a couple of exceptions, but on the whole, it's a fantastic community. If you feel as if your community isn't what you would like it to be, take it upon yourself to help to create it. It's can be as simple as creating a Facebook page to get area athletes talking and inviting each other to train together. Start there, then see where it goes. Keep the overall theme positive, inclusive and fun and before you know it, it'll be huge. The Fuel Your Fire Running and Triathlon Facebook Group has nearly 500 people at this point and would welcome you to join.

In this episode, Coach Dave is joined by fellow Octane Athletics Training Systems Coaches, Avram Carter and Sergio Arias. Coach Dave has mentioned Coach Avram and Coach Sergio many times and now you get to meet them. It's been a long time coming for these two brilliant and committed coaches to be on the show.

THIS IS ONE OF MY PROUDEST AND MOST FAVORITE EPISODES EVER. In this episode, Coach Dave is joined by Octane Athletics Training Systems Coach Jaleen and Athlete John Femling. Together we discuss one of the most epic races I have heard of... the Mt. Taylor Winter Quadrathlon. John has done the race two years in a row, one time training on his own and this past race, working with Jaleen as his coach. The two met while volunteering at the Trans Pecos Ultra Stage Race. We hear all about the training leading up to the race and the race itself. Once we wrap up that interesting conversation, we move to an outstanding second segment.

The second segment of the show is focused on questions that we get very often about TrainingPeaks, our chosen tool for athlete planning and collaboration. We focus on what all the interesting metrics, how to set training zones, and how we use the performance management chart. Grab a pen and a notepad, because there are some outstanding learnings available in this segment. We are always open to follow up questions you have. Just hit us up at the contact the coaches page on the website.

We promised to post two things during the eposide.

  1. The Octane Athletics Training Systems Threshold Test Template
  2. Coach Avram's Article on EXPORTING YOUR TRAININGPEAKS WORKOUTS

What a treat! In this episode, Coach Dave is joined by Triathlete Pro Lesley Paterson (@lesleydoestri) and her husband, the uber-brilliant Dr. Simon Marshall (@pssjm3). They discuss Dr. Simon and Lesley's new book, The Brave Athlete: Calm the F*ck Down and Rise to the Occasion. It's an incredible sports psychology book that helps athletes understand how your brain can be your best friend or your worst enemy. If you have ever said any or all of the following, this book is for you:

  • I wish I felt more like an athlete.
  • I feel fat.
  • When the going gets tough, the tough leave me behind.
  • I don't think I can.
  • I don't cope well with injury.
  • I need to harden the f*ck up.
  • Setting goals is not my problem, acting on them is.
  • People say that I am dependent on exercise or have an addiction.
  • I keep screwing up my races because I lack focus.
  • Other athletes are just tougher, happier, or more bad ass than I am.
  • I don't feel like leaving my comfort zone or pushing myself.
  • I don't handle pressure well. I get overly stressed and anxious the closer I get to race day.

In the book, Dr. Simon and Lesley take us through strategies and tactics related to dealing with these issues. They help us understand how our brain is functioning during these times and provide us with exercises to deal with them.

Order the book today. You won't regret it. Here is an Amazon link for you to do so: http://amzn.to/2rGOW1a

Dave and Jesse discuss Training and Racing with Power, the importance of family and balance with respect to your endurance endeavors, and they discuss how to deal with challenging race day changes like the ones that occurred at Ironman Racine 70.3, Ironman Texas and the CapTex Triathlon in Austin, Texas this year. I start this week discussing an amazing event taking place in the Bay Area called the MBK Bay Area Cycle Challenge that is being lead by our friend, amazing person, professional triathlete and Ironman Champion Meredith Kessler. The event supports the Challenged Athletes Foundation. Whether you are in the Bay Area or not, you can support this event. Just CLICK HERE and donate a few dollars. They all add up. Challenged Athletes Foundation is a 501c3 organization so your donation is tax deductible. Let's come out in force as the Octane Nation and show Challenged Athletes Foundation, Meredith Kessler and her friends our support!

The second part of the show I discuss Heart Rate Variability. I don't go super deep into the science behind it because I am still researching and learning, but I know enough to take you through how you measure it, why you want to, and how to use the data.

The app that I mention on this show is Elite HRV which can be found at http://www.elitehrv.com/. The heart rate straps that I mention that are compatible with the app are the following: Wahoo Tickr ($49) or the updated and more feature rich Wahoo TickrX ($99) Polar H7 ($49)

I personally use the Wahoo Tickr and love it.

Kevin is back on the show, this time to go deep on protein. When we say that he goes deep, we mean it. This self proclaimed biochem nerd knows his stuff. Toward the end of the show we discuss ketones and a bit about some future releases from Classified, including HMB which prevent muscle protein from breaking down. Less damage after training means that it takes shorter for you to recover. Less damage + less time = BETTER RESULTS.

Kevin and his partner Jeff have been incredible supporters of the Fuel Your Fire Podcast and Octane Athletics Training Systems and it doesn't stop now. Want proof... check out what I got from them to share with you:

Hey Octane Athletics crew!

Jeff and I really appreciate being a small part of your team! We’d love to help out more, so we decided to come up with an exclusive program just for Octane athletes. If you buy the BFA Box (BEFORE, FUEL, & AFTER) we’ll give you 2 free Flavor Files and a free Time-Release Leucine. We know you are putting in the time, effort, and work, so this is our way of helping you better repair, recover, and adapt to all your training.

Add the BFA System, Time-Release L-Leucine, and your choice of two Flavor Files to your cart. Then use the coupon code: OCTANE

We’ll even cover shipping.

Keep up the good work!

Kevin & Jeff

After too long of a break, Dave and Randy finally reunite for a great show. The boys discuss putting the fun back into your workouts, mental fatigue associated with training and planning, and Dave dodging a bullet at the greatness that is the Original Pancake House (www.originalpancakehouse.com).

Randy touches on the Heart Rate Strap issues for big guys, the Wahoo Tickr (http://amzn.to/1mWrPZj) and the Fuel Your Fire Nation https://www.facebook.com/groups/1193347154024728/ chimes in on advice for integrating your family into your triathlon life. Randy transfers out of IMAN Texas to Louisville and the boys discuss Dave jumping into the ketosis pool.

Finally they move to the always entertaining topic of training distractions and how to climb out of the “burn out” doldrums. Listen up because there are some solid nuggets to take away from this episode.

In this episode, Coach Dave is solo. The events of the week surrounding husband, father and former Pro BMXer and talented Ironman Triathlete Dave Mirra motivated Coach Dave to discuss his personal journey with respect to clinical depression. In this episode, Dave is real, raw and honest about his dealing with the struggle. In the end, Coach Dave shares a challenge with those struggling today. He wants them to seek help and deal with the challenges. Life changed in a very positive way for Coach Dave once he dealt with his own issues. He offers to help whomever needs it. Coach Dave also discusses the wrap up of the super successful Ironfire Challenge and looks forward to seeing lots of pictures online of folks with their Ironfore SWAG. In this episode we answer questions about metabolic testing. When to do it, why and how to use this information. The question comes from long time listener and friend of the show, Sujean Kim. We make mention of a talented coach, Kristin Codish, who runs a local triathlon club, Triple Threat Tough. She also is a Ph. D candidate, a masterful coach and testing practitioner. Randy and Dave then discuss the fact that with all this tech, we have a ton of metrics and that doesn't mean that we should focus on the wrong metrics at the wrong time. When it's time to perform a zone 2 run, then we focus on heart rate to make sure we do so, even if that is at the expense of things like run cadence or ground contact time. Finally, listener and friend of the show, Eric Looney asks an interesting question about whether the new Texas open carry gun law that came to be on January 1st means that we're going to have some folks riding strapped with "an AK47 on their top tube" as Randy suggests. It's an interesting question and we get into it a bit in this episode.Check out the Resource page at octane-athletics.com for free training plans, workouts and other cool stuff.

In this episode we talk about Ironfire starting up. People are killing it with #Ironfire2016. We have at least two people that have almost finished the 140.6 miles already and we're only 6 days in. Ironfire is global. There are 160 people going for it from 5 different countries including the US, Sweden, The Netherlands, The UK, Mexico and Canada. Registration is closed for this time around, but stay tuned because we've got more where this came from!

For today's discussion we talk about three topics...

  1. Ideas for keeping your nutrition in check.
  2. How to deal with your workout gear when your "stink" lingers around after a good washing.
  3. Some of the Bike Trainer Apps out there and why we like them.

The boys hit the half century mark with Episode 50. Topics vary from the perils of raising millennials to taking the mystery out of triathlon strength and conditioning. Puberty hits Randy like a armored car filled with quarters and Octane Athletic’s first virtual event, The Ironfire Challenge is discussed in detail. Our dynamic duo also discuss the Octane Athletics Training System’s take on the communal nature of the triathlon related organizations and finally get philosophical about how if you help enough people achieve their goals then we will achieve our goals.

Probably the most exciting thing to come out of Octane Athletics since free t-shirts and water bottles, is “The Ironfire Challenge.” We are putting on a virtual 140.6 distance race that can be completed during the entire month of January. The faster you finish, the more bragging rights to be had. Tell your friends, tell your family, tell the mailman… challenge people in your life to start off 2016 with steps towards a healthier life. All registrants will receive a bib with number and their name, a finisher tech t-shirt, and a finisher’s medal. Listen for details and register at http://www.octane-athletics.com/ironfire.

A large portion of the proceeds with go to the Make a Wish Foundation.

Randy and more surprisingly, Dave geeked out a little on functional screening movements, motor unit innervation, and proper strength training progression during the build up to the “A” race. Randy plugged Matt Dixon’s “The Well Built Triathlete: Turning Potential Into Performance” as a go to reference for proper strength training creation and progression.

2016 is almost here. With that said, many people are going to set a goal to to take on their first triathlon. Dave and Randy thought it would be a good idea to talk through this in a topic they're calling Tri 101 - Back to the Basics. As an added bonus, Coach Dave put together a 12-Week Sprint Training Plan for Beginners that you can download free of charge from the Octane Resources Page.

Octane is sponsoring and "hosting" a virtual Ironman in the month of January. Perfect for those New Year's resolutions. Stay tuned to Octane Athletics website, Facebook and the Fuel Your Fire Running and Triathlon Page on Facebook.

Support the Podcast by doing your shopping on Amazon.com this holiday season!Gift Ideas for Beginner Triathletes: New goggles - Nothing worse than cheap goggles that leak. It's a low cost way to make a big impact on your triathlete. Dave likes the TYR Special Ops 2.0 Transition Goggles http://amzn.to/1l0H17y because they are photochomatic so you only need one pair for indoor/hazy day or outdoor/sunny day. They're only $23.27 a pair right now on Amazon.

A good Bike tool - Trust us... they need one. I like the Crank Brothers Multi Bicycle Tool (17-Function). It's 27.99 on Amazon (http://amzn.to/1IsSCRJ) and its small enough to fit in the saddle bag, a jersey pocket or even in the bento box.

Bike Trainer - It's the winter and even down in Texas we spend a lot of time on the trainer. CycleOps Mag+ Trainer w/Adjuster would be what I would get if I were buying now. It's on amazon for $175.99. http://amzn.to/1l0GXF2

Gift Ideas for experienced Triathletes: Book - How Bad Do You Want It?: Mastering the Psychology of Mind over Muscle by Matt Fitzgerald (http://amzn.to/1l0IRp7). Almost every athlete I talk to wants to know how to get better with their mental game. Matt's book does that. It's around $15 on Amazon.

Coaching - That's right... pop for their coach. If they haven't had one, give them a month or two of coaching to get them started. It should cost between $150 and $500 dependent on the coach and the services they include.

Wahoo Kickr Bike Trainer - This is a computer or smartphone/tablet controlled resistance trainer (http://www.wahoofitness.com/devices/wahoo-kickr-powertrainer.html). This will take your loved one's training to another level. Add a ZWIFT (http://zwift.com/) account and you turn training into a competitive video game. Kickrs are available at your best local bike shop, like Tri Shop and retail for about $1,200.

Randy’s Top Holiday Weekend Deals TomTom Multisport - $99.00 33% off (http://amzn.to/1PXiTQ7). If you don’t have a GPS watch and you are on a budget, this is a no brainer. This model was my first multisport watch and it packs a lot of features-even at the retail price- for the money. It doesn’t support power meters but has an easy interface and at $99 this is less expensive than some stand alone heart rate monitors and run-only GPS watches. Note that it doesn’t come with a heart rate strap or monitor but see below

Jarv Bluetooth Smart HR Monitor - $30 (http://amzn.to/1jw6XGG)

This low cost Bluetooth smart HR monitor will work with your Tomtom devices, iPhones and Androids, and a multitude of other devices. I haven’t personally tested this device but at $30 and buying through amazon with their liberal return policy, you probably can’t go wrong here if you are looking for a low cost GPS solution.

Garmin Heart Rate Run $40 which is 60% off (http://amzn.to/1jw6ZOK). If you need a replacement for your Garmin devices, I’ve never seen the Garmin HR Run this cheap.

Fenix 3 $100 off Watch and Watch Bundles (http://amzn.to/1PXiPzJ). The latest release of the Fenix 3 includes almost all of the 920’s multisport features and includes a ton of features that any outdoorsman will find useful.

Garmin Vivofit GPS Smartwatch $169/199 32% off (http://amzn.to/1PXiM6T). This very capable activity and GPS device will cover most needs with the exception of a full blown multisport mode. If you’ve already got an Ant + HR monitor then you don’t need to buy the bundle.

Withings Smart Scales $69/$99 Normally $99/$159 (http://amzn.to/1PXiNHY)

Randy pulled the trigger on the WS-50 Scale on Friday. Right now it looks like the WS-50 scales are sold out because Randy can only find them for $149. He paid $99. However, the WS-30 is still available at $69 which is the lowest these scales have ever been. Both scales will sync with Training Peaks, MyFitnessPal, and a cornucopia of other apps. Connects through your wireless home network.

Wahoo 20% off any 1 item with coupon code TURKEY: Note, not valid on any trainers, ELEMNT, or RFLKT. Available on Wahoo’s site. Ends Sunday, Nov 29th. Although this doesn’t cover trainers, it will cover the Tickr which is probably the most versatile HR monitor on the market. Transmitting in both Bluetooth Smart and Ant +, this device can cover all your bases if you have a mix of Garmin and Bluetooth devices such as a 920XT and a Wahoo Kickr or Snap. I pulled the trigger on this one myself over the weekend.

Training Peaks 25% off annual premium membership (Code: 25ST15)

Best Bike Split 35% off annual membership (Code: PREM35)

Cowtown Marathon Races (Code: BF16SATCM $10 off K Races and BF16SUNCM $20 off Marathon distances)

Training Over the Holidays Most important thing is to stay moving.

Something is always better than nothing.

Now is a really great time to be keying on your areas you need to improve. We'd bet for many of the folks out there strength is an area that they can focus on. Work on your swim technique. These are indoor activities so there isn't any excuse for not doing them. On the bike and run, slow things down. Work Zone 2 (base building efforts now). That will get your aerobic engine finely tuned and will give you a jump start for 2016.

If you are doing an early season A-Race. Get with your coach NOW to get the plan laid out for that. (Galveston example)

We've found with everything going on around this time of year waking up and training in the morning is really the only way that I can guarantee that it gets done.

Joe Friel is a legend in endurance sports. He's written books that have Bible in the title and that word is deserved. He has pioneered many of the metrics and methods that have become commonplace in endurance sports. He presented last week at the Tri Shop in Plano, Texas and Joe was nice enough to allow us to record and release his seminar.

Last weekend, Tri Shop in Plano, Texas celebrated their 4th "Birthday" and instead of taking gifts, they gave them. That's what they do at Tri Shop. Octane's own Coach Dave was on the agenda and followed the likes to Joe Friel and John Cobb. That couldn't have been fun.

Here is a list of what went down at the event....

Recovery Pump is the sponsor for this short “did you know” episode.

Go to recoverypump.com and use the code: OCTANE. You get a $25 shipping credit and either a $50 or $150 Gift Card when you order your Recovery Pump System.

The last "did you know" episode can be found HERE. In that episode, the tip saved you hundreds on the purchase of your new bike.

In this episode...

The end of the year is coming up quickly. One thing that many people overlook is the use of their “use it or lose it” medical flex spending accounts, so in the episode we share a fairly cool idea on how you can spend those remaining funds in a way that can benefit you for years to come.

Do you have a medical flex spending account? Do you want a Recovery Pump System for little to no additional money out of pocket? Here is what you do...

  • Go to RecoveryPump.com
  • Identify the System you want
  • Call Insurance company and get conditional approval because you need the boots for recovery and to improve circulation
  • Go to your family doctor and tell them that you have conditional approval from insurance and that you need the boots for recovery and to improve circulation. He or she knows you're a badass endurance athlete, so they will write you a prescription for the boots to keep you healthy.
  • Find out how much you have left in your company medical flex spending account.
  • Order the boots using the OCTANE Promo Code from Recovery Pump and pay for them with your medical flex spending account card.
  • Turn in the receipt with the prescription to your insurance and get reimbursed whatever they will cover.
  • Enjoy your Recovery Pump for years to come.

The guys start out with some of their normal banter and a few shout outs to athletes that recently completed (and shredded) their A-Races. Coach Dave shares some insight on what it's like to be a coach on race day when his athletes are out there on course.

The guys then drop some knowledge for you...

Do you want to lose all of your hard earned fitness that you so painstakingly built this year? How about putting on 25 pounds during the “Off Season” ? Sounds great, right? NOT IN OUR HOUSE YOU DON’T! Listen up, Octane Nation because this episode will tell you everything that you need to know stay in shape in the offseason, build some FTP (That’s fancy talk for “bike go fast”), improve your run, and have that bikini body you always wanted come March 2016. We also talk about Randy’s borderline anorexia and Mike’s stroke volume.

Do you want free stuff? Who doesn’t. Well the only thing you have to do is listen to this episode to find out what is going down in a few weeks during Austin 70.3 weekend.

ANNOUNCEMENT: It is official, Randy Messman is a IRONMAN Certified Coach!

“BY THE POWER OF THREE LET OCTANE NATION UNITE!” Finally, Mike and Randy’s articles that are shamelessly plugged and can be read here.

How Randy Lost 38 Pounds in Six Months aka MyFitnessPal is Lying to You

The conversation takes an ugly turn so stick around for a funny out take that we'll call, “Caulk Talk”.

Please bow your heads for a moment of silence in memory of Bevo XIV.

In episode 44, the boys discuss Kona for a bit. They talk the interesting data that people pull out at the World Championships like the shoe and bike counts. They also talk who finished where including some Sean Astin talk and whether "Rudy" was on or off-sides.

Finally, they talk about the importance of race nutrition. Specifically how important it is to have a simple executable plan that is partially based on science and partially based on feel through trial and error during training. Support the Fuel Your Fire Podcast

Warning: the last 2 minutes is probably rated somewhere between PG-13 and NC-17. We chopped up some of the edits from the episode to give you a flavor for the warm up conversations that happen before we record and how easy it is to distract us and to turn Mike into a cackling hen of laughter.

In this episode we discuss Dave’s Doctor’s Despicable bedside manner (not really), training with knee injuries, the value of coaching, free Online Training Plans, and the elusive CHUPACABRA.

The discussion about the knee stemmed from a post-op diagnosis from Dave's doctor that “Your knee will only be 70%.” Does this mean:

  • 70% Range of Motion
  • 70% Strength
  • 70% of the Cartilage

Dave didn't ask while in the moment.

The boys then discuss four really great ways to train with a knee that is less than 100% and how to keep Dave’s long course dreams alive with in-depth discussions of strength training, recovery methods, alternative workouts, and varying training loads to minimize the impact of running.

Mike nearly has an aneurism caused by an epic rant on the subject of saving money by not hiring a coach. We explore the logic (or lack of logic) of athletes who spend thousands of dollars on equipment, race entries, magic pixie dust supplements and travel while searching for a free Ironman training plan online.

Finally we look at some of the free plans offered online and discuss items every athlete should consider when evaluating a training plan.

What Nick noticed in his research while doing the reviews is that there were some gaps in the marketplace that needed to be filled. What an honor! We got to record an interview with Charity Miles (@CharityMiles) CEO Gene Gurkoff (@GeneGurkoff). Not only is Gene one heck of an endurance athlete, completing 50 or so marathons, a trail ultra-marathon, and 6 Ironman Triathlons, but he is a Harvard Law graduate that went from a prestigious law firm in New York City to the founder and CEO of an amazingly addictive and charitable iPhone and Android App called Charity Miles.

Charity Miles is a free iPhone and Android app that enables people to earn corporate sponsorships that benefit their favorite charities while walking, running or biking. They are supported by awesome companies like Humana, Johnson & Johnson, Timex Sports and Kenneth Cole.

This one starts off with a bang. Randy recovers from his "Gas Guzzler" suggestion with podcast gold arguing that H eclipses Coffee in terms of its addictive properties. This show note editor found it hilarious when I listened. The guys then discuss some backlash and a slight lack of professionalism exhibited by Normatec VP Kristian Pearson following our side-by-side between RecoveryPump and Normatec. The Octane guys kept it professional with Mr. Pearson offering for him to join the show to discuss Normatec in greater detail. This is the third such invite that was made to Normatec. We shall see where that goes. In the mean time, listen to Episode 29 to get full coverage on the recovery boot challenge we did between RecoveryPump and Normatec. Randy discusses taking the Colorado pancake challenge. See the attached pictures to get an idea of this thing. The last segment of the show is some Q&A about Power Meters and how coaches look at and use metrics like heart rate, cadence, power, etc.

In this episode, we are joined by Brian Carberry and Andrew "Red" Readinger from RecoveryPump.

During this episode, we talk in detail about the technology and science related to the kind of therapy that is provided by RecoveryPump. We then put the RecoveryPump to the test against it's competition, Normatech, side-by-side. Mike has never used any kind of recovery boot before and Dave has been an avid boot user for a couple of years and both of the guys strap in for a test drive in them. We shot two videos that you will want to check out. 1. This first video is one that Randy shot where he unboxes the device and walks you through the components. He explains what they do and some of the settings in depth. 2. This second video is one that Randy shot of Dave and Mike in the boots. Dave in the RecoveryPump and Mike with one leg in the RecoveryPump and one in the Normatech. The findings from both of the guys is interesting.

ABOUT RECOVERY PUMP RecoveryPump began serving the athletic community on January 1, 2011 after decades helping to improve the quality of life for over 50,000 patients through pneumatic compression pump therapy. The results this therapy has produced for those suffering from arterial and venous disease, lymphedema and other circulatory problems like diabetes have been tremendous.

Further research revealed that this same technology could prove equally beneficial to athletes. Scientific evidence abounds in support of the use of sequential compression to expedite recovery, but RecoveryPump became excited by the prospect of sharing these benefits firsthand with the athletic community.

What they believed from the start has proven to be true - once you try RecoveryPump and experience the benefits it provides, you'll be a believer in this type of recovery treatment and specifically, RecoveryPump's unique way of delivering it.

From the average Joe's to Ironman Triathletes to Pros like 2015 NBA League MVP Stephen Curry and Carly Lloyd from the US Women's National Soccer Team and Professional Triathlete and Ironman Champion Meredith Kessler, RecoveryPump is the best weapon on the market to achieve #LessPainMoreGain.

Coach Dave finished Ironman Texas in The Woodlands, TX on May 16. It was a long and painful day for him and the guys talk about how the race went and the lessons learned. Dave finished the race in 16 hours and 50 minutes, which is a longer day that many expected but the performance was a gutsy one. The guys discuss Dave's near term triathlon future. Once they get through that discussion the guys discuss the WTC/Ironman announcement that was made on the heels of the US DOJ declaring that Ironman broke the law with it's execution of the Kona lottery system. You didn't hear about that? Ironman was made to pay around $2.8m in fines to the US DOJ. The $2.8m of athlete money. A day later, Ironman announced it was opening their own coaching certification process. For $600 Ironman will "certify" a coach to work with athletes for their Ironman pursuits. The process seems interestingly simple. No pre-requisites. 14 hours of web-based training and then pass a test and BOOM... you're a certified coach. Coach Dave goes on a bit of a rant on this. Coach Mike reigns him in on that. It's an interesting discussion. This one is not as tame as the others have been, but it is pretty darned funny. Mostly because Mike, Randy and Dave discuss the interactions with some knuckleheads they've come across in their years in endurance sports. The guys even admit to their own episodes of douchbaggery. Have fun with this one as you listen. That's the point of the episode, to have some fun.

This episode is funny and the examples are real. Enjoy it and if you have any stories of your own you'd like to share, please head over to facebook or twitter and let us hear from you.

We hope at the end of this you don't think we're too big a set of d-bags ourselves.

Randy and Dave discuss observations and happenings from Ironman 70.3 Texas which happened in Galveston, TX on April 26, 2015. Dave had 4 athletes in the race and two of them Terry and AnnMarie Wilson's race day went differently than any one of us thought it would.

The guys are interrupted by a phone call that is audible over a bluetooth speaker that Dave forgot to disconnect before the recording which turned into a pretty funny discussion and request from Dave to Apple as well as a discussion about the Apple Watch.

At the end of the podcast, Dave shares his interesting learning from the flights to and from Chicago. This is one about Jon Bon Jovi and his "farm".

If you have a facebook account and you haven't seen the runner's world article about Derek Mitchell, give it a read then listen to this episode. It's one of the more interesting and inspirational stories I have seen in a while. Derek has a benign tumor on his pituitary gland that gives him some significant health problems including a lack of testosterone production contributing to weight gain. He's now taking medication to shrink that tumor, helping him manage his condition more effectively. He's also started testosterone replacement therapy.

At age 34, with the support of his mother, sister and the rest of his family and close friends, Derek set out to get himself healthy. To do so, he committed to completing a 5K race every month of 2015 starting in March. He just completed one in his home town of Kansas City, MO less than a month ago.

Derek's social media reach has grown exponentially. He is highly motivated to succeed and has a great support system around him. He is eager to influence others to start their own journeys to health. He's clearly a gentle man with a kind heart, as you'll hear in this podcast. We hope you enjoy it.

To follow Derek on his journey, check out his Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/derekmitchellstory?fref=ts&ref=br_tf

To lend a hand to Derek financially, please check out his gofundme page and donate whatever you can. Even a dollar will help him with his journey and his medical costs. That page can be found here: http://www.gofundme.com/penupk

In this episode, Coach Mike Sexton takes Coach Dave's data files from Ironman 70.3 California in Oceanside, CA on March 28, 2015. The guys discuss the race, Dave's race strategy, the results and the lessons learned. This is an important step to take in the sport. The sport is more than racing for the sake of racing. You'll leave improvement up to chance if you don't take the time to do this analysis and alter your training and race strategy accordingly.

About this episode...

Get yourself a cup of coffee, a bottle of water or a stiff drink, a pen and a notepad because Mike Sexton (@tridailycoach) sat in with Dave Jimenez (@bigdave4 on Twitter and Instagram) to speak with Ryan Cooper, the co-founder of an amazing web based application called Best Bike Split (@bestbikesplit) and Ryan goes deep about the science behind his solution and how it could help an athlete know very specifically how they need to put out efforts for the best results on race day. Very simply put, Best Bike Split takes athlete, course, and other pieces of information like weather and provides the athlete with a race strategy that will optimize performance. Best Bike Split is available to try for free for an unlimited time, so head over to bestbikesplit.com to try it out. Professional cyclists including the Trek Factory Team as well as professional triathletes like TJ Tollakson, Kelly Williamson, and Josh Amberger are using Best Bike Split to get the best results that they can. Ryan even tells the story about how Josh Amberger went from sceptic to believer overnight. It's a great episode and we thank Ryan for his time.

Just to turn the awesome up to 11, here is a shot of Ryan and his son...

ABOUT THIS EPISODE:

Co-Founder of DFW Tri Club and friend to the show Mike Sexton joins Dave and Randy for Episode 12. The boys have a little fun at Randy's expense. Pretty funny stuff. Mike checks Dave's thinking a bit on the LiftTime/Ironman Kona Slot situation, the coaches talk Stryd with Randy, they talk about the Cowtown Marathon and Ultramarathon getting cancelled due to weather and they wrap up the episode talking about the best laid plans of races, the race strategy and how to put a good race strategy together.

And so you know... the Stryd Kickstarter is LIVE! There are only 1,000 available this time around, so hop to and get on it.

Oh yes... and for you the listeners... we are giving away a brand new Garmin Vivofit and three extra bands. All you have to do is this:

To call these guys pioneers and innovators isn't overstating it. Gus Pernetz and Jamie Williamson join Dave to discuss Stryd, the world's first power meter for running. Head over to the Stryd Blog and read about some of the happenings at this small but powerful Boulder, CO start-up.

During this discussion, Dave, Gus and Jamie talk about the benefits of running with a power meter. How they are using them today, how they can and likely will be used in the future, the differences between training and racing with heart rate on the run versus with power, among other great things.

Gus and Jamie were forthcoming with their answers, were straightforward and very honest about where they are with Stryd. We over here at Octane think these guys are really on to something. People 15 years ago thought that training and racing with power in cycling would be a passing fad. It clearly isn't and neither will this. Give the podcast a listen, then check out the following great write ups about Stryd:

  • DC Rainmaker spends some time with Stryd
  • WIRED Magazine on Stryd
  • Competitor Running on Stryd

Stryd Kickstarter is LIVE NOW! Get on it.

In this episode, Dave starts off with a rant about the fact that Ironman and LifeTime as a part of their new partnership are giving away slots to the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii as well as three Ironman 70.3 World Championship slots for folks that complete the LifeTime fitness one-hour indoor triathlon. That's right, you get a chance to go to Kona for a one hour workout.  After the rant, the guys discuss a couple of listener questions. They talk about the benefits of good run form and technique. They also discuss the benefits and advantages of doing bike training indoors on the bike trainer versus outdoors on the roads.  Dave references an article he wrote on the dfwtriclub.com blog about the advantages of mountain bike training as an alternative to tri or road biking. That article can be found here.

6pm.com

runningwarehouse.com

sierratradingpost.com

Amazon.com

Use the Amazon Wish List feature to tell your friends and family what they can get you for the holidays)

http://gearup.active.com

Also check out your local TJ Maxx. They have a fairly good selection of performance gear at great prices.

Another great way to pickup great gear on the cheap is to buy it at the end of the season. There are always great deals available then.

Dave then shared some interesting information about the value of some of the larger bike related purchases that triathletes make by giving Randy a pop quiz of sorts. They provide you with some quantitative data from the studies below about how much time (in minutes) the purchase of things like aerobars, triathlon specific bikes, race wheels and aero helmets get you when you buy them.
