In this episode, Channa Channa Channa talks to award-wining songwriter and drummer from American rock band Hootie & The Blowfish, Jim Sonefeld.

The Hootie & the Blowfish drummer grew up dreaming more of sporting victories than becoming a successful musician, but after that dream ended, he immediately began writing songs, performing, and chasing a music dream. With the unsuspected success of Hootie & the Blowfish’s 1994 debut release, “Cracked Rear View”, he and his bandmates found themselves traveling the world to support what would become the 9th best-selling album of all time in the United States.

The first single, “Hold My Hand,” a tune Sonefeld brought to the band early on, helped thrust Hootie & the Blowfish into its great success, and likewise showcases his songwriting ability. In the years to follow, the band would record six more studio albums and receive numerous awards, among them, two GRAMMYS®. His memoir, “Swimming With The Blowfish – Hootie, Healing, and One Hell of a Ride,” published by Diversion Books, released in late June of 2022.

In this episode, Channa Channa Channa talks to Fugu Musk, the alternative rock band from Manila. Channa discovered Fugu Musk when they performed last April at Social House Makati with Fragments.

From its beginnings in 2010 through the release of its first EP (Stay Awake) in 2017, the band went through several lineup changes with Raf de los Reyes as the only consistent member. In 2018, Raf met guitarist Raph Rivera, and they began playing shows and writing songs together, becoming fast friends through their shared love of punk and grunge music. In 2022, the pair brought in drummer and longtime friend Ian Estanislao, and have been releasing music at a breakneck pace since then.

Seeking to be a beam of light in a genre that takes itself too seriously, Fugu Musk writes music that contemplates themes of loneliness and transience, with a loud and screaming hard rock punch. Fugu Musk is characterized by loud, fuzzy guitars, hard-hitting and boomy drums, thunderous, pumping bass, and snarky, energetic vocals.

In this episode, Channa Channa Channa talks to South African singer and songwriter Meel Vignetting. She is a self-taught guitarist who, at the age of six knew creating music was all she ever wanted to do.

Meel started writing her own songs from the age of twelve and soon formed her 1st band with a few school friends. She has since been in and out of the band scene for many years then, in 2016, ended up a solo acoustic act. In 2019, Meel started incorporating other musicians in her act again and can now be booked as a solo, duo, or full band performance.

Her influences stem mostly from the 90's alternative, rock, and grunge and you can certainly hear a slight yodel as

stamped by her most influential artist, Dolores O'Riordan from The Cranberries. Meel also has many male vocalists that influence her singing style, which makes for quite a unique tone. Her lyrics relate to real-life scenarios and personal life experiences.

A demo EP was recorded in her living room during the hard lockdown and can be found on all streaming platforms. More recordings may be expected in 2022, with her newly found set band members, Rohan Mostert on Guitar, Wesley Ward on Guitar, Zadelhoff on Bass, and Reino Stols on Drums.

In this episode, Channa Channa Channa talks to Richard (Bass) and Marx (Vocals) of the British nu-metal band The Sixth Letter. Channa discovered TSL via the internet.

While nu metal can be tagged on to The Sixth Letter’s style, it’s the more creative end of the spectrum that they’re akin to - bands such as Snot, Incubus & Deftones have made a big impression on the band.

That and punk/rock with band members (former and current) having spent many a week in a van touring in bands of that genre. It's that 'DIY' ethic that started everything - and it has come full circle into 2021.

After some challenging times, The Sixth Letter has a renewed focus, energy & desire to take on the world, one venue at a time.
