Colin Jeffries and Eric Reed discuss modern branding on this episode of The Rethink Marketing Podcast! If reviews, channel selection, customer experience, and other factors drive decisions to switch between brands, how much does traditional branding still matter? From upstarts to knockoffs to instant quality comparisons, do the good ole days of Pepsi vs. Coke and Ford vs. Chevy stand any chance of returning? With the costs of switching at an all time low and ease of entry at an all time high, how do marketing and sales leaders build a differentiated brand in this marketplace?

Colin Jeffries and Eric Reed chat about the reasons out of home advertising is roaring back on this episode of The Rethink Marketing Podcast! Mattel, Amazon Prime, Jacquemus and other brands are collaborating with experiential agencies and 3D artists to bring unique installments to life--in person and online. Is this type of sensationalist advertising right for your brand? Who should you be collaborating with to make it happen? What would your ideal customers consider to be revolutionary, unexpected, and sensational? Maybe we'll buy a billboard to promote this episode.

On today's episode of the Rethink Marketing Podcast, Eric Reed and Colin Jeffries discuss awards and recognition. Not all awards are created equal, so how do we determine which make sense to pursue and which don't? What about the earned media value of appearing on the Inc. 5000 or a Power 100 list? If an award is won, how should we go about building context to make it as meaningful as possible to our customers? This is a can't miss episode for anyone chasing public accolades!

On today's episode of the Rethink Marketing Podcast, Eric Reed and Colin Jeffries chat about the power and risks of creating online communities. Peloton presents an interesting case study with a few relevant takeaways for marketing and business leaders. When is it time to shift away from product and into a subscription model? On today's episode of the Rethink Marketing Podcast, Eric Reed and Colin Jeffries turn to artificial intelligence to write a script for today's episode about (you guessed it) generative AI. Fair warning, the duo goes off-script every few sentences to talk about current applications for marketers and salespeople to leverage AI. Generative artificial intelligence is changing the landscape of advertising, content marketing, prospecting, personalization, customer service, sales follow-ups, and more. But there are pitfalls and limitations that AI users should consider. How do marketers personalize and build context around AI-generated content? What should first steps or next steps be for marketing and sales leaders?

On today's episode of the Rethink Marketing Podcast, Eric Reed and Colin Jeffries discuss another counterintuitive topic: the advantages of embracing bias! Specifically, how does understanding and reacting appropriately with recency bias help marketing and sales leaders outpace competition? Not every scenario demands embracing recency bias, but there are many applications in business. How a customer feels you are doing now is more important than their sentiments over the last 12 months. Customers' current expectations matter a great deal more than their expectations last year. While the term "bias" has a bad rap, maybe not every bias is bad? On today's episode of the Rethink Marketing Podcast, Eric Reed and Colin Jeffries unpack Magna's 2023 Global Advertising Spend Report. But don't be fooled by the headline! Our favorite marketing conversationalists take a deep-dive on where dollars are racing, where they are fleeing, and what it means for big and small brands alike. Marketers need to understand how expensive attention is getting--and why! While Meta, Google, and Alibaba seem to be printing money, traditional media is struggling to minimize year-over-year declines. Automotive ad spend is coming back with a vengeance, so what does that mean for other geographically-targeted players? One things is for certain, 2024 is going to be way more expensive than 2023 for USA-based marketers! Grab your slide rule, and get ready to take vigorous notes!

On today's episode of the Rethink Marketing Podcast, Eric Reed and Colin Jeffries chat through knowns and unknowns to arrive at optimal resource allocation. Marketing and sales leaders collect enough data to prove empirically which writer consistently gets more views on their blog posts; while salesperson has the highest ticket size per deal; which social media manager gets the best engagement rate; and so on. Depending on the scenario, sometimes it makes sense to give a rookie an at-bat, but it may be wiser to bet on data-backed slugger instead. This episode is chock-full of sports references, and for that we apologize! Even so, there are great leadership and management takeaways for organizational innovators of all types, especially those leading sales and marketing teams.

On today's episode of the Rethink Marketing Podcast, Eric Reed and Colin Jeffries chat through the implications of acknowledging that nobody bats a thousand. Sometimes it's the wrong audience, a miss on the selected channel, poor timing, or just a disconnected message. Our co-hosts talk through examples of Gucci, Netflix, and Burger King knocking it out of the park and then falling flat in short order. We all make mistakes--even big brands with the best agency partners and budgets to match! Marketing and sales decision-makers can take consolation in knowing that other business leaders are also making mistakes and missteps. As the state of marketing continues to flex and evolve, we will continue to see intelligent innovators and great marketing teams stumble as we all learn together.

On this episode of the Rethink Marketing Podcast, Colin Jeffries and Nick Smith chat about their experiences managing humans, agility, and innovation--simultaneously! Nick shares the following formula for managing innovation: Meaningful unique ideas = [(stimulus )^(Diversity)] / Fear Since, as Robert Frost put it, “Ideas are feats of association,” the key is for managers to put people in stimulating environments where collisions of disparate ideas can happen without without fear of judgement. But that can be difficult to do when business leaders are tasked with upskilling their team, managing the core business, adjusting to changing market demands, and, of course, driving innovation.

On episode #153 of the Rethink Marketing Podcast, Colin Jeffries and Nick Smith discuss some ideas to actually standout on Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Small Business Saturday. The old, tired playbook of cutting prices, buying expensive media, and competing with everyone else for share of wallet is hackneyed and overdone. Plus, when everyone is shouting about discounts, it can be nearly impossible for smaller brands to standout. So how do marketing and sales leaders get "in" on Black Friday without damaging their brands?

On episode #152 of the Rethink Marketing Podcast, Colin Jeffries and Nick Smith split hairs and talk semantics. If words have power over thoughts, why are we still using the word "consumer" so widely? We have replaced "salesperson" with "consultant" and "vendor" with "partner," so why aren't we leaving the word "consumer" back in the 1950s? Does it really matter what language we use to describe people who transact with our business?

On episode #145 of the Rethink Marketing Podcast, Eric and Colin are joined by Tendayi Viki, Ph.D. He is an author, speaker, academic, consultant, and corporate innovation expert. Tendayi unpacks how we can turn ideas into innovations and innovations into successful, scalable business models. Remember, just because we find a market does not mean we have found a profitable business model that can scale. Entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship have some similarities and many distinct, unique features. Tendayi explains how to build the right incentive structures, cultivate culture, and encourage executives to make innovation mainstream to the organization. One way to do this is to make it easy to get started with the innovation process, supported with metered funding. But it shouldn't be easy to continue without proving success! On episode #130 of the Rethink Marketing Podcast, Eric and Colin discuss under-appreciated sources of innovation and how businesses can capitalize on them to create competitive advantage. Many innovation models can be broken into three basic steps: ideating, testing, and scaling. None of those three steps live exclusively within marketing, sales, or the executive team. Even sources outside the company can help! But if the culture isn't ready to support innovation, no amount of ideating and testing will help. Creating a formal innovation program or denoting a team of innovation champions may go a long way in turning the tide from "status quo" to "status whoa." On episode #124 of the Rethink Marketing Podcast, Eric and Colin take a look at "Mr. Know It All" and yes, why he always loses! It's an easy trap to fall into as we try to close business and find new audiences in sales and marketing. We need to remember that humility is preferred over self elevation, and that while competence is part of what controls trust, it is the lessor part! Overcomplicating and being demeaning is never a tactic that works. We would be better served by making a buyer or audience feel informed and bringing them along with us in the process and serving them in a role of a teacher not a lecturer. On episode #96 of the Rethink Marketing Podcast, Eric and Colin stop. Instead of pushing the envelope with a new tactic or strategy, they discuss the allure of progress for progress's sake, and reflect on the need to pause and establish a baseline. We've all heard that intentional rest helps spur creativity, innovation, and solutions, but where are we supposed to carve out that extra time? In marketing and sales, there is constant pressure to move forward but often to do that effectively, we need to step out of the fray temporarily to avoid inadvertently wasting time, energy, or funds. The lines between branding and experience keep blurring and blurring. It has become increasingly difficult to understand what is true branding and what is experience marketing. On episode #94 of the Rethink Marketing Podcast, Eric and Colin reflect on the importance of learning from past performance. In sales, getting game film can be pretty simple---as long as the prospect or client knows they are being recorded. In marketing, it gets a little bit trickier--do we really want to track keystrokes all day or watch videos of ourselves doing conversion rate optimization? How can marketers observe our actions, take note of what we want to improve, and test those changes to continually get better? Grab a notepad and some popcorn as we turn to the big screen to see how we're doing against the competition. You can listen to take5: The Rethink Marketing Podcast on all major podcast platforms.Visit the Rethink Marketing Podcast website to learn more about the show or just peruse our guest list and episode library.Let us know what you're rethinking by emailing us at: take5@reed5group.com. An increasing number of company leaders are turning to services outside of their core offerings. What questions should we be asking to identify side hustle opportunities for our businesses? Side hustles have evolved over the years to empower businesses to grow revenue, lower costs, or simply own the supply chain. More and more businesses are spinning up side hustles or making acquisitions outside of their core competencies and creating substantial advantages. So how do you and your business notice opportunities to "do the hustle?" Eric and Colin have a few ideas to help you get started. On episode #91 of the Rethink Marketing Podcast, Eric and Colin dig into the often politicized topic of whether marketing degrees are invaluable or worthless. Is a marketing degree as fundamental to success as a medical degree or as useless as a degree in bovine tattoo art? Are employers putting too much stock in classroom performance? Have internships, case studies, simulations, business tours, job shadowing and other experiences replaced traditional lectures? Is four years of experience better than a degree alone? It all comes down to this: to be a great marketing leader, do you need a four year degree or don’t you? On episode #90 of the Rethink Marketing Podcast, Eric and Colin kick off Season Two with a conversation around a traditional sales and marketing acronym U.S.P. (Unique Selling Proposition). As marketers, we know the importance of understanding that words have meaning and the words we choose frame how we think, feel, and act! We need to get away from saying "Unique Selling Proposition" and instead start saying "Unique Serving Proposition." While it may seem subtle, this shift can be a powerful move in reframing and differentiating your business from the competition. It places your customers' needs at the center of your value proposition, instead of the competition. Customers today have many options and the marketplace is more crowded than ever before. On episode #79 of the Rethink Marketing Podcast, Eric and Colin talk revenue growth. When it comes to your sales, marketing and overall business should you look to grow or scale? First we need to understand that there is a difference and just what that difference is. Second, we need to consider a few distinguishing factors. Is your business in a systematic position to scale? Are you trying to drive top line revenue? Is your business structure better suited for one over the other? What we know for certain is it's not a simple exercise in just deciding to grow revenue. You need to understand and rethink the universe of scale and growth, and then you can make the right decision. We think checking out this episode might be a step in the right direction! How does grasping that branding and experience marketing are spiritual functions (meaning simply that they can't be measured in a laboratory) impact the way we go about them? Rabbi Lapin dives into the need to understand the spiritual nature of marketing, money, and business, and how today's businesspeople can leverage this knowledge to win in a crowded global economy. On episode #77 of the Rethink Marketing Podcast, Eric and Colin get a little academic and talk about rethinking marketing class for more holistic solutions to today's business problems. Sometimes we get stuck in our classes, that we think a sales problem must be solved with a sales answer, when the issues may actually be better solved with operations or human resources changes. Instead of solving problems only with one lens, how do business leaders instead frame solutions in terms of companywide options, instead of simply thinking, "I'm a marketing leader, so I must solve this problem with marketing solutions"? On episode #76 of the Rethink Marketing Podcast, Colin and Eric take us out to the ball game, but not for peanuts or Cracker Jack! The discussion is around sustainable growth efforts versus big (but often short-term) marketing wins. It's a high level conversation to unpack when you should swing for the fences and how to approach it intelligently. We hope you enjoy the analogies, sports stories, and fun visuals! Home runs, hail Mary's and quick strike marketing tactics can get the accolades and feel great, but is catching lightning in a bottle the most intentional long-term formula to build your businesses? How do you capitalize on consistent successes with your marketing strategy to accumulate to big wins? On episode #58 of the Rethink Marketing Podcast, Colin and Eric discuss "PFP" or "Pay for Performance Marketing." Many media companies are going all in on only charging advertisers once they achieve defined results. On the surface it sounds great. If you could mitigate advertising risk you would certainly want to take a look.On this episode we try to educate and entertain with four things to consider when weighing a performance based marketing model. 1) Is your business a good fit for a "PFP" program, considering both business vertical and product or service price point? 2) If it is, you will need to negotiate specifics of the program, it is usually not turn key. 3) You need to take advantage of all the added value a "PFP" program will bring to your entire marketing strategy. 4) Costs and tradeoffs. While most performance based marketing programs are built upon only paying when you achieve results there can also be both set up fees and/or base buys built into the program. For the right business a "PFP" program in todays market can be a tremendous results driven tactic but like all marketing tactics you need to really RETHINK them through and understand if they a fit. We have all been on the receiving end of being talked at, talked down to, or involuntarily in the front row of someone's one person show. None of these scenarios help us feel understood or meet our business needs. If 80% of our sales presentation is us speaking, or 90% of our marketing campaign is talking at our customer base, that could be a big problem. In this episode we won't get into theories about active listening or responsive queues, but we hope to hammer home that you can't listen if you are talking. We would love to hear from you.
