On this episode of Soul Stories, Dr Gayle Randall sits down with Geri Suster.

Author Geri Reid Suster takes unconventional look at exits across a broad range of settings in the upcoming book Graceful Exits: Making the Case for Getting Good at Goodbye. She teaches readers how to build skills around exiting. Graceful Exits looks at positive and negative exits in four major areas: personal relationships, workplace exits, significant changes in the way individuals live and how to face death - the final exit, for loved ones as well as for ourselves. She goes on to explore actionable steps to better navigate some of life’s most difficult moments and reduce the likelihood of a bad exit ever happening.

“Your next exit is just around the corner, are you ready? After a few bad exits in my own life, I realized this is not a skill that is taught but rather an experience we deny will happen to us and when it inevitably does, we execute poorly and spend years picking up the pieces,” explained Reid Suster.

What motivated Reid Suster to write this book is seeing how bad exits can negatively affect a person’s life regarding self-worth and future decisions for years. By developing skills in this area, people can avoid a huge amount of shame and regret.

Geri Reid Suster is a corporate exec-turned-nomad with 30 years of experience in business and management, specializing in acquisitions and creating operational excellence. After a period of intense personal upheaval and then jumping to a new technology startup that didn’t pan out, Geri entered a period of reflection that led to an epiphany about “exits” that would change her life.

In 2017, she traded her ocean view home in Southern California for an RV she named Wallace and in less than three years, she traveled to 38 states in the United States and five provinces in Canada with her dogs. In 2020, Geri sold Wallace, bought a Sprinter van named Wüfgang (#whereswüf) and built her own custom home on wheels. Still hooked on wandering, she spends most of her stationary time in Bend, Oregon. More information about Reid Suster can be found on GracefulLife.com.

On this episode Charles Dowding has a fascinating conversation with Dr Randall about regenerative farming. Charles Dowding is a renown no till Innovative pioneer in regenerative gardening/farming from Somerset England.

Charles’ current passions and projects are:

nodigforlife - a hashtag to symbolize freedom and health through discovering how to grow your own food more easily

Next generation, kids - youngsters are the future !

Health seen as positive state, more than absence of disease and the central role of microbes - this goes back to widespread misunderstanding about the body as a sterile organ, and that comes from Louis Pasteur, and ignores the value of microbes and how the body is actually a collection of microbes which we simply need to hold in balance, to achieve health, and then we resist problems! The pharmaceutical industry do not like the latter understanding.

Empowering people with food and health knowledge and abilities, skills. Charles called his latest book Skills for Growing because he noticed how people need quite basic knowledge and abilities and to be empowered to grow food. He feels that ‘power' needs mentioning because so many are giving away their power, through fear, most recently about the virus.

Get inspired with Dr Randall and Lewis E. Mehl-Madrona! Lewis is the author of the Coyote trilogy. (Five books) His work discusses healing practices from Lakota, Cherokee and Cree traditions, and how they intersect with conventional medicine. Mehl-Madrona has been writing about the use of imagery and narrative in healing since the 1980s.

His focus arises out of a desire to celebrate indigenous culture, particularly that of North America, and to show how contemporary health care practices can be enriched through the inclusion of the ideas of indigenous culture into contemporary work. He speaks about traditional healing, about how psychotherapy and medicine can be modified to include the insights of traditional healing. He is interested in narrative medicine as a means for which storied indigenous practices enter contemporary medicine and psychology. Also in dialogical self theory and therapy as a contemporary parallel to the self-theory of indigenous cultures. He is interested in how we can train new doctors to be simultaneously humanistic, narrative, and evidence-based.

Lewis graduated from Stanford University School of Medicine and trained in family medicine, psychiatry, and clinical psychology. He completed his residencies in family medicine and in psychiatry at the University of Vermont College of Medicine. He has been on the faculties of several medical schools, most recently as associate professor of family medicine at the University of New England. He continues to work with aboriginal communities to develop uniquely aboriginal styles of healing and health care for use in those communities. He is interested in the relation of healing through dialogue in community and psychosis. He is the author of Coyote Medicine, Coyote Healing, and Coyote Wisdom, a trilogy of books on what Native culture has to offer the modern world. He has also written Narrative Medicine, Healing the Mind through the Power of Story: the Promise of Narrative Psychiatry, and, his most recent book with Barbara Mainguy, Remapping Your Mind: the Neuroscience of Self-Transformation through Story.

Join Dr Randall and Richard Radstone in an epic conversation.

Richard's story began in the early 80s, when, after graduating from Brooks Institute of Photography, he opened his first studio in Las Vegas, Nevada—a mod little space constructed from the remains of a 3000-square foot citrus warehouse. It was there his roots formed as he worked non-stop producing, photographing, and directing projects that ranged from nightlife to leisure, portraiture to lifestyle, wild animals to intricate special effects, entertainment to advertising.

He was in his mid-twenties. Young, evolving, and thirsty for experience. A fresh set of eyes in a city full of energy as his business grew faster than imaginable, and not ready for the degree of success that came his way, he lived fast and fell hard. It was a decade where he grew up through experiences too numerous to share in the paragraphs of a biography. Bright and dark memories that, to this day, are foundational subtext to the perspectives grounding the importance Richard places on humanity, the value of an individual, and integrity.

In his thirties, as the Las Vegas chapter hit its pinnacle; Richard faced a creative, spiritual, and emotional Do-or-Die. Driven by a hunger for growth and culture, he realized he had reached a professional and personal crossroads. So, he decided to close his Las Vegas shop to travel the cities of Europe; exchanging security and predictability to live a vagabond life in further experiencing risk, history, culture, and people. It was an uncharted time, a living out of a backpack and rolling suitcase journey where he navigated a roller coaster of diverse languages, cityscapes, and customs. A week-by-week schedule of country- connecting train rides and hostel stays where each day he peeked over the edge of financial ruin. It was life-change to the fullest. His livelihood wrapped around his waist as he survived on cash pulled out of a hidden money belt. A character and spirit-forming trek that, in the end, left him homeless and stripped to the most simple lifestyle and reflections of himself. Yet, in reviewing that experience he says, "a great blessing was gifted to me—the birth of my cultural outlook, spiritual self and storytelling curiosity."

A photographer, filmmaker, educator, and artist, Richard's life entered what he calls "the year it all changed", when in September 2011, as his life hit a painful set of obstacles, he challenged himself to 365 consecutive days (which in the end went for almost two years) to approach strangers on the streets of wherever he was. To look beyond his own troubles, and instead to find out who others were, what they were going through in their lives; and from there, to blog a series of daily essays, portraits, and videos based on the meeting of people he did not know. Hundreds of consecutive days that, no matter what was going on in the world, how he felt, or where he was, he journaled the hope, hurt and wisdom trusted to him by a globally diverse cross- section of individuals. 1000s of people from all corners of the globe who were brave enough to open their lives and perspectives to him and all of who followed his blog. And as 1000's of people from all over the planet read the essays and viewed the photos published, the world took notice.

Now, almost a decade later, and with the world becoming increasingly fragmented by the turbulence of social, lifestyle, political, cultural, civic, and civil divides, Richard gives credit to as he works to grow what he calls the compassionate majority. A diverse people, who each living under the radar of the loudest voices and digital divides, have so much well-being to offer each one of us. Unknown ghosts to each other that as we actively engage in seeing and listening to each other, are taking part in a globally resonating movement that betters the way many view, and treat one another— one interaction, one neighbo

Bruce Parker is Dr Randall's own doctor and healer and her colleague for more than 25 years.

Dr Randall says, "I have heard it said many times and observed that he is the doctor to the stars and VIPS although you will never hear it out of his mouth. He is Malibu’s own very special best kept secret as one of the most powerful healers known. To a large part because of his own modesty and his down to earth “as is” attitude. I love it! Those of us that know him and have experienced his work know how powerful his medicine is. He merged science with magic. Sometimes he is like the crazy genius professor with his lasers, electromagnetics and goggles, and other times his magic hands find the spots you did not even know needed healing."

Bruce says, “My journey into the healing arts may have begun unconsciously as a child when I would sit in my front yard and dogs and cats would wander over and I would pet them , rub them and scratch them and then watch them visit regularly for a massage. My hands would find their way. Later in life these hands moved on to include humans. Interest and curiosity grew and I would start learning different forms of body work, locally and eventually on travels around the globe. After practicing therapeutic massage on the North Shore of Oahu for years I was inspired by my great friend next door, Dr Tom DeBos-a very talented Chiropractor to take the prerequisite studies to enter Chiropractic School. Completing the pre-Chiropractic studies at the University of Hawaii I relocated to Malibu, CA to attend Cleveland Chiropractic College. While attending School I set up shop in a multi-disciplinary office with MD, DO, ND, DOM and Chiropractors. Working together and sharing patients with outstanding outcomes. Today still practicing in Malibu, endlessly curious and always learning I practice in the Malibu Health Club.”
