Wellness Nurse Revolution: Alison Boser RN
“Everybody wants their employees to be healthy, but being healthy…What does that mean? And that means different things to different people. It's not one size fits all.
It's a really flexible, definition based on your stage of life, where you are. And I think an awareness of wellness as this sort of amorphous different things at different times for people would be fantastic. I think wellness, like capital W wellness, has a bit of a negative connotation that, you must be very thin and muscular and do hot yoga or something, but that's not it.
You know, it's like walking your dog. It's your grandma who can carry your groceries into her house at 95 and she gets them after she goes and plays cards! It's strong communities. I'd love to see all of the skills from Nurse coaching and all the Nurse coaches ripple out like that.” ~Alison Boser, RN

The Daring Power of Two: Midlife Women Entrepreneurs Enhancing Health Care- Jen Schroer BSN, RN, NC-BC and Angie Maguire BSN, RN, NC-BC Highlights
Ah- Ha Moments
- Meet the Nurse Coach Duo: Jen Schroer and Angie Maguire as they share why they chose entrepreneurship and the Integrative Nurse Coach path to serve midlife women through preventative, actionable lifestyle care.
- From “do it perfect” to “do it sloppy”, they launched a collaborative YouTube channel. Larning the behind thumbnails, Zoom, Canva, cadence, they’ve proved momentum and community beats perfectionism every time
- The ah-ha moments they discovered from their Integrative Nurse Coaching programs center on client-led change, simple tools like breathwork, and honoring each person’s unique vision of wellness, and that life and healthcare is not a one-size-fits-all approach
- Integrative Nurse Coaches ‘slow the roll’ of fast, task-driven systems—focusing on prevention, whole-person assessments and plans (physical, mental, emotional, social, occupational and more), and practical lifestyle tweaks (e.g., blood-sugar awareness) with time to truly listen
- Inspired by the 2024 INCA Symposium, they championed collaboration over competition, inviting Nurses and Nurse Coaches to connect, share modalities (sound healing, pelvic floor PT, hypnosis, functional medicine), and lift up more voices to transform care together

From Patient to Purpose: A Nurse Coach’s Mission to Transform Organ Donation Support- Taylor Byrer BSN, RN, NC-BC Highlights
“I was telling these two about my story and about how I needed a liver. And it was the most moving, most like chilling experience, like every single hair on my body was standing straight, because then the next time that we met, one of them had shared that she had lost her dad, and it was unexpected.
And then the hospital staff came to her and asked if he was an organ donor. And she said, ‘No, he wasn’t.’ And she said, ‘I had never thought about him being an organ donor, like I never thought about that process.’
And she said, ‘…and it wasn't until I heard about your story that I said, Yes, I want him to be an organ donor, and he would be okay with that’. And then he was an organ donor. And then she came back to me again a couple weeks later, and she said, Taylor, the only organ that he was able to get was his liver.” ~Taylor Byrer BSN, RN, NC-BC
Ah-Ha Moments
- Taylor’s story reminds Integrative Nurse Coaches how vital holistic presence and deep listening are during life-altering medical experiences
- This story is a powerful lesson in how lived experiences can shape a meaningful coaching niche. Feel and notice how you are called towards the population you will serve best!
- Even small steps—emails, calls, visits—can create real momentum
- You will hear “no”: instead of discouragement, no can bring clarity and redirection
- Say yes to the possibilities that call to you, yes to compassion, and yes to being an organ donor

“I find that people make the changes best when they uncover the information themselves. I can offer them information, but unless they come up with that solution, that's where real magic happens. That's where change happens when they come up with their own solution.
And I find through the subconscious work with hypnosis and yoga nidra, that sometimes you just really need to be in that relaxed state to have it come to the surface. You may not even be aware of it, and it comes to the surface, and then that's when the transformation happens.” ~Mary Cohen MSN-ED, RN, AHN-BC, HWNC-BC, CH, NLP
Ah-Ha Moments
· Nurses can combine Integrative Nurse Coaching with any other modality that they find impactful. Integrative Nurse Coaching is limitless!
· When patients, clients and communities allow for stillness in their lives, messages from their subconscious will move into consciousness, often allowing for new awareness and opportunities for impactful transformation
· Important to listen, and hear the client’s patient’s message and then to reflect back what you heard, instead of offering solutions- this allows the person to define their own solutions in their unique life

Inspiring Collective Community: Christine Gilchrist PhD, MPH, RN, NC-BC, CH Highlights
"To each of you— to ask, at this point, 'what is it you're hoping for'? And then when you have that, when you've reflected on that, to go back inside and ask, 'what is your deeper hope'? I think, to be able to connect with feelings of hope through difficult times that certainly we experience in our lives and as a society, it's important to connect with hope, the feelings of hope, and what ultimately we're hoping for, because there's always, there's always hope in each moment." ~Christine Gilchrist PhD, MPH, RN, NC-BC, CH

Menopause Insights from a Nurse Coach-Suzanne Greiner BSN, RN, NC-BC Highlights
“Yes, I'm going through perimenopause. And what do I want my perimenopause story to look like? Do I want to be a victim to going through this?
Or do I want to be that victor? I went through perimenopause, and I was able to do this, and I was able to find solutions for my own health. And I think the kicker for me at that point in my perimenopausal journey was, I want this to be that when I'm 85 years old, and I look back on my life, this is the point that I chose for longevity of my life, versus a quick fix.
So, every decision past, that point in time was, is this going to be helping my 85-year-old body to hike a mountain, or is it going to set me back? So those are the kinds of decisions of working with my future self. What does my future self-want me to do at this moment?” ~Suzanne Greiner BSN, RN, NC-BC
Ah-Ha Moments
- In mid-life, if you’re lucky, you WILL go through the stages of menopause- perimenopause, menopause and post menopause
- You have choices and a voice as it relates to your health- and ALL aspects of your life
- Imagine the life you want to life at 85 years old- ask yourself- is this a decision that will support me when I get to be 85?

86: Building a Meditation App- Ann Adams, MS, RN Highlights
"Two supportive practices that are accessible to anybody is their breath— that can help regulate their nervous system, just by learning different ways to breathe. And gratitude. So a gratitude practice is free, and that helps you not ignore what's negative, but helps you scan the horizon for also what's good.
If we have a dysregulated nervous system, we tend to look for what can be threatening, because that will be what saves our life. So a gratitude practice helps balance that out, that intentional practice of looking for the good." ~Ann Adams, MS, RN

85: Celebrating Integrative Nurse Coaching: Karen Avino EdD, RN, AHN-BC, HWNC-BC Highlights
"The trend word out there is well being, right? We want Nurses, everyone, to feel like they are in the state of well being. We know that well being is really static. It's like in the present moment, I'm feeling well, whereas really, self development is about well becoming, because it's a much longer journey of... and never ending, a never ending journey of well becoming, right?
That always has to be a major part of who we are and what we do, because without that experience and being able to develop ourselves, we can't sit with the suffering of others and do a meaningful job with them, or take on the suffering ourselves, or, you know, all of those pieces." ~Karen Avino EdD, RN, AHN-BC, HWNC-BC

"In the Nurse coaching certificate course, we definitely learned about mindfulness. And you know, that sounds maybe trivial to somebody who's not familiar with Nurse coaching. Sure, we know mindfulness is research fact and very effective, but it just goes so much deeper than that.
You know, we don't often as Nurses, allow ourselves enough time, time with our patients, time with ourselves, time to breathe, time to drink water, to take a rest, so allowing time and space to transpire, to let our bodies catch up with ourselves, to really hear what our patients are saying, you know, or what they're not saying.
Time is... I really think mindfulness and time are so connected that we can be mindful, intentionally mindful, if we allow ourselves more time. So that is a big one. You know, I think that's a big one in this busy healthcare space, allowing more time or creating a way to allow for more of that." ~Maggie Gardner RN, BSN, HWNC-BC, CH-C
Ah Ha Moments
- As Nurses, we can do things to numb our emotional experiences- social media, alcohol, drugs, ignoring the things we experience - this is not serving you, it never has- maybe there is another way...
- There are so many pathways you can choose to take in your professional and personal life- go in the direction that lights you up- that is the best way to go- even if it's scary
- Your sensitive heart is exactly what is needed to shift the way the healthcare system is being run! You are exactly where you need to be, right now. Continue to show up- we need you- exactly as you are

“…the problem and what is driving Nurses from the profession in droves like never seen before— please don't talk to me about attrition, well, yes, that's a factor—the world is hemorrhaging Nurses. And that's a quote from Dr. Terrance Hill, medical sociologist, the world is hemorrhaging Nurses and the root cause for that, it's not about burnout.
And please stop gaslighting Nurses about burnout resilience. Please just stop. The reason. The root cause, according to my research, five years, four disciplines, is avoidable, Nurse Specific Traumatization. And this would be this historical trauma, where we are unknowingly transmitting." ~ Dr. Lorre Laws PhD, RN
Ah Ha Moments
- All Nurses have, (or will have) experienced trauma
- Enough blame on Nurses. Healthcare system, wake up! Instead of putting the blame on your employees, let’s address the systemic problems that are causes of avoidable traumas… understaffing, bullying, violence, not addressing high acuity, lack of resources and still demanding exceptional care and more…
- Thinking that solving burnout will fix all Nursing problems is all wrong, what if what we’re experiencing is because of trauma exposure? That the actions and responses we see in ourselves, and our colleagues are because the traumas are being stored in our bodies, minds and spirits
- We must learn about how trauma can and has affected us, and make this common language, and learn how to help ourselves so we can begin to heal and insulate our nervous systems from further injury

82: Uplifting Messages from the Universe! Annie Jones PhD, MBA, MSN, RN, AOCN, NC-BC Highlights
“I thank the universe and have much gratitude. I think what's on my heart is that community is so important.
And it's our own responsibility for ourselves, and to remember that when we see another member of our community— so in other words, our Nursing group, our Nurse coaches in particular— is that we're a sister and brotherhood, and we have to reach out to keep ourselves together in a world that is designed, at the moment, to tear us from all ends.” ~ Annie Jones PhD, MBA, MSN, RN, AOCN, NC-BC
Ah Ha Moments
- The universe is always supporting you. Giving you what you need and who you need to elevate you and sustain you towards whatever you desire.
- Life will take you on many twists and turns and the universe will guide you.

81: Building a Business as a New Nurse Coach- Whitney Distefano BSN, RN, NC-BC
“As a new business owner in the community, it's just been one learning opportunity after another, and truly just like a practice of vulnerability, of showing up and putting yourself out there and really doing the best I can to be detached from the outcome, which is what they teach us as Nurse Coaches as well.
Showing up day in and day out, and knowing that, you're gonna find things that you don't know how to do, you're going to find that there are questions you didn't even know were questions. And just having to come back to the attitude that, everything is figure out-able.” ~Whitney Distefano BSN, RN, NC-BC
Ah Ha Moments
- It’s absolutely vulnerable to be a new business owner, especially because Nurses are never taught how to be entrepreneurs. And yet, we can still show up and be open to the possibilities!
- Everything is ‘figure-out-able’. And we can ask for help, and be detached from the outcomes, as best we can
- Be clear on your personal vision and values, as those will be instrumental in you showing up for the world in your true, authentic way, and your ability to align with how you are being of service
- Begin with one step at a time. You don’t have to do it all right away. Find the things you think will have the most impact and begin there. Do a little bit each day for your business and for yourself

"Nurses are so well suited for psychedelics, and we bring so many skill sets that other disciplines don't, and I don't think any one discipline has it all, but I think we bring a really important piece of the puzzle. And if you think about it, Nurses are with patients in non ordinary states of consciousness, sometimes every day.
If you're a hospice Nurse or working in labor and delivery, if you're in Psych, if you're working with patients, you know, coming in and out of anesthesia, patients with delirium. So many reasons why somebody could be an altered state or even just shock trauma. You know, emergency Nursing.
And Nurses often are with patients for prolonged periods of time. You know, offering their caring, healing presence." ~ Dr. Stephanie Van Hope DNP, RN, NC-BC
Ah-Ha Moments
- Psychedelic medicine is becoming more mainstream, and Nurses are stepping up willingly to lead and support their patients, clients and communities
- Nurses are perfectly aligned to lead and work in psychedelic medicine as they are often with patients in altered states of consciousness throughout a shift
- Sacred medicine, also connected to entheogens, because they can help create a link to God within or to experience God within and the use of rituals and traditions to connect with the Divine
- Nurses, you can absolutely take your passions and your knowledge and use both to create courses, programs, concepts and ideas that you know in your heart and will support fellow humans (and yourself) on life’s journey

Together We Can Stop Shame and Blame in Nursing-Kristy Meyer RN, BSN, NC-BC Highlights
“I feel like self-care is often discussed in a way like, well, you're burned out, it’s because you're not doing self-care, or you're burned out, that means you're not resilient.
And I feel like there's a lot of shame and blame in there, when really, we work in really tough environments, and we see really hard things, and a lot of times we have a lot of defensive mechanisms, I believe, like shielding ourselves from that, not feeling some of the feelings, and that's a good skill at times, because that's what you need to do to get through your work shift.
But internalizing a lot of feelings and not taking care of your own basic needs just leads to a lot of health problems for us as Nurses.” ~Kristy Meyer RN, BSN, NC-BC
Ah Ha Moments
- Shame and blame are evident in discussions about self-care. Like the things you’re doing daily to help yourself aren’t good enough. It’s important to change that narrative
- It’s easier for Nurses to receive assistance when they can connect with a fellow Nurse, especially for health and wellness coaching
- It can be difficult for Nurses to identify they are burned out and need help, because they are sooo good at caring for others
- You are powerful beyond measure and have the capacity to heal

"I finally did find my purpose, and my purpose is to nurture an atmosphere of unlimited potential for those around me. And when I typed those words out, I cried, and I still get emotional about it, because I'm like, you know what?
It doesn't matter what situation, what relationship, what Nursing field I work in. It doesn't even matter if I'm a Nurse, a teacher, a stay at home mom. My purpose can be fulfilled through every single thing that I do. And should be fulfilled through every single thing that I do.
And because I have that purpose, it allows me to say no to things that don't line up with my purpose, and it allows me to say yes to things that do allow me to line up with my purpose." ~Stephanie Page BSN, RN, NC-BC
Ah-Ha Moments
- It's OK, and it's worth it to go inward, explore your true desires and dreams, and even feel vulnerable with it, because that may be what it takes to uncover your true needs
- Your purpose can shift and morph as you transition through many stages of your beautiful life
- It may be fundamental for you to work with a Nurse Coach to help you discover your purpose- why not support a fellow Nurse?

"I am helping Nurses at the bedside and providing them with tools and expertise to change their practice, and make a difference in the things they do every single day. And that's how we should be practicing. It's all not patient care, some of it's the practice environment. And maybe there's best practices for how to create a better work environment." ~Jill Arzouman DNP, RN, ACNS, BC, CMSRN, NC-BC, RYT-200
Ah-Ha Moments
- Evidence-Based Practice uses a set to take research and translate into practice at the bedside, as it can take 15-17 years to get knowledge into actual practice
- You should never have to be faced with a case of the Sunday Scaries. You have choices! And you can make those choices based on what serves you best
- There can be a know-do gap in Nursing. This is the gap in how we translate what is known to work into the care that patients receive.
- You can bloom where you are planted, and practice as a Nurse Coach in the role you are doing today!

"If you don't feel like enough, if you feel like you need something more, start talking to someone about why you feel that way. And really cultivate a sense of awareness. And you're not going to find the answer outside yourself.
You're going to have to go inward and find out, what is leading me to the decisions that I am making right now that seem to bring me to a place that is uncomfortable or that is not aligned with who my true self is?" ~Joanne Turnier DNP, RN, ACNS-BC, HN-BC, HWNC-BC

“…you need space in order for energy to be exchanged and to hear what we're saying, and hear what the other person said. Historically, I've wanted to fill that space really.
So, it's still practice for me as well. I still have to work on it. But just trying to lean into that. And, allow that space to exist so people get the benefit of hearing themselves talk too.” ~Lindsay Frey MA, BSN, RN, HWNC-BC, HNB-BC, CDCES
Ah Ha Moments
- There is so much power in listening to a person’s story, especially when we quiet our own agendas
- We’ve come leaps and bounds in talking about self-care in Nursing schools, and yet, we still have a ways to go in implementing self-care into daily Nursing life
- Listen deeply to yourself and your needs and desires- listening may take you across the country, or even closer to yourself
- There is vulnerability in silence. Allowing space for whatever will come instead of trying to fill it
- Nurse Coaching can be used in all parts of Nursing practice, from Nurse to Nurse to partnering with patients using insulin pumps. There are no limitations to it.

Ah Ha Moments
“I am a different person because of what I went through, and I want to preach to other people not to take their health for granted. And not to live on autopilot. Because this life is just too short.” ~Nicole Monteserrato BSN, RN, NC-BC
- Nursing the Nurse. Who to better serve Nurses, than fellow Nurses?
- Living on autopilot is not serving you. Take a chance for you!
- Feel the fear and do it anyway! Take a chance and do something you never thought you’d do!
- Create programs, courses, gatherings, meet ups, and other events that make you feel excited and elevate your vibrations

"Nurses are interested. Nurses want to use this medicine. They want to explore this medicine. They want to understand this medicine. And inevitably, they want to share this medicine. Through our experience, we, minute for minute, spend more time with vulnerable people— not just vulnerable people, but vulnerable people in their most vulnerable times— than nearly any other profession." ~Chandra "CeeCee" Campanelli, RN, HN-BC, HWNC-BC
Ah-Ha Moments
- Nurse Coaching and Holistic Nursing allows us to be fully present and open for whole-person wellness and Nursing
- Layering on our foundation of Nursing we can do anything that calls to us! Explore all our options before giving up on Nursing
- Use your voice as an advocate to speak up for things you believe in. Nurses are the most trusted profession on the planet, use that as your power to speak up! Nurses also can explain complex topics simply, for the layperson to understand
- Psilocybin continues to be a criminalized plant medicine, yet there is slow movement to potentially de-criminalize it in some states
- Just as Nurses need to be aware of and understand the implications of cannabis, so too should we be aware of the implications of psylocibin
- There seems to be a psycho emotional component of using psylocibin, that can be mitigated by good facilitators, and Nurses, if they choose can be those facilitators
- Some benefits of psylocibin are, neurogenesis with dendritic connections, reduced symptoms for Parkinson’s, post concussive syndrome, OCD, improved outcomes in terms of anxiety, depression, addiction

“As Nurse coaches, we often in coaching sessions, or when we're talking to people, we often really want to see those big aha moments, or those clients come up with these phenomenal, smart goals.
And sometimes, especially when we're Nurse Coach students, we think that maybe a session wasn't overly productive if we didn't have those.
But it really isn't about those grandiose, big aha moments, it really is about those subtle shifts that we often are a part of, but we don't realize that we're a part of when we're working with our clients.” ~ Judy Ratliff MA, RN, NC-BC
Ah-Ha Moments
- It’s OK to not have all the answers all the time. Listen for the whispers and follow them. Trust.
- Bring joy into your world in whatever way you can- even being a clown!
- Facing yourself is some of the most important, impactful work you will do
- Patients are number one, yes, and so are you!
- It’s imperative that Nurses understand the basics of cannabis and become informed on this topic and how it affects our culture, our patients and the practice of Nursing

"I noticed, a lot of the times, I would check out after work. I would find myself after a hard day, pulling over to get some beer or wine, coming home, having dinner and then just wanting to shut everything out and be alone with my wine while my husband would read to my son and put him to bed...
Now that I'm more present, I've noticed a shift within our family. And I think my son has noticed how much better it feels for everybody without alcohol in the house." ~Devon Donkin BSN, RN, NC-BC, Certified Gray Area Drinking Coach
Ah-Ha Moments
- Working 12-hour shifts is taxing. It’s OK to search for something outside of bedside Nursing to support you and your family life
- Shifts in wellbeing don’t have to be or feel dramatic, instead they can be simple and easy
- Alcohol has negative impacts on health, like hormone disruption, blood pressure, energy levels, gut microbiome, brain shrinkage, relationships, and sleep. It’s linked to certain cancers, high blood pressures and mental health and other health issues
- Alcohol is a highly addictive substance, so it is important to balance our body chemistry through lifestyle choices like mindfulness, better sleep, balancing blood sugars
- Gray Area Drinkers consume a handful of drinks per week and are doing this regularly. They are moderating their drinking regularly and it may be consuming to monitor and manage this behavior
- It’s important to support the nervous system and body’s biochemistry when one begins to abstain from alcohol
- Sleep, exercise, sunlight, breathwork, eating nourishing foods, drinking enough water will help support your nervous system and body’s biochemistry
- Creating new habits and rituals to support your journey into sobriety are, tell people about it, get into nature, try movement, be curious, be and feel into your body, hug someone, hug your pet, notice when you feel good, embracing feel good moments

65: Feeding Compassion: Exploring Intuitive Eating in Nursing-Tiffany North, BSN, RN, INC, Certified Intuitive Eating Professional Highlights "Intuitive eating is really about letting go of shoulds around food, letting go of this food is good, this food is bad, and instead, looking at food from a body attunement lens. So how does this food feel for me in my body? How does eating in this way feel for me and my body? What are the underlying needs associated with various body signals?" ~Tiffany North, BSN, RN, INC, Certified Intuitive Eating Professional
Ah-Ha Moments
- Nurses can do sooo many things with their careers!
- Nursing careers can help us shift into different directions as we learn more about ourselves, and sometimes we don’t know exactly where it will lead us and we still trust
- Learning to slow down can feel very uncomfortable
- Food and relationships with food can be a very common area of focus for every human being
- People’s relationship with food
- Intuitive eating is letting go of ‘shoulds’ around food, or, this food is good, or this food is bad.
- Nurses are layering in all types of education, experiences and creativity into our Nursing practice in safe and appropriate ways
- Our society is pressurized with ‘should’s about food, body image and relationships with food and our bodies
- Intuitive eating helps us look internally to see how past experiences affect us today and help us unravel and reconnect to ourselves and
- It can be very powerful to ask your body what you’re experiencing. What sensations are you experiencing? When we can listen and be curious with compassion and kindness, we can draw on our own wisdom
- Follow the whisper, honor that yes, and you are the person who is charge of your own satisfaction and honoring yourself

64: Regulating the Nervous System as Nurse Coaches- Ellie Monjoseph, RN, BSN, NC-BC Highlights
“Are you fighting something? Are you fleeing? Are you, what's called, collapse or shutdown, and just trying to figure out where we're at with our nervous system, so we can support ourselves?
It’s plugging in some of the missing pieces that an unresolved stress takes away from us. It kind of masks or clouds our vision of ‘where am I?’. Because when you think of when you're connected, when you're joy-filled, when you're present, you can make decisions very easily.” ~ Ellie Monjoseph BSN, RN, NC-BC
Ah-Ha Moments
- Nursing experience gives you a front row to witnessing humanity
- Listen to where you are being called… you can go in whatever direction you choose
- It’s important to continue to do your own inner work to support yourself, to understand yourself more deeply
- Fear, imposter syndrome, people pleasing, and the inner critic can sound really loud when we don’t address our unique, deep needs
- An inner critic is typically a voice that is not yours, from your past
- Connecting to your heart space, a purposeful pause, to connect with yourself. What do you need right now? What does your heart say right now? This voice is a calm, kind voice that will help you move into the next space that you need right now.
- It’s a power move to ask for help! It’s vulnerable to do, but it creates a cushion of a supportive community around us
- What is this urge to flee? The sympathetic system, fight, flee, shutting down… wanting to change jobs, move, give up, etc. Bringing awareness to self is imperative to understand and recognize how we’re responding so we can take a purposeful step that is truly best for you
- Healing begins when we realize we’re interconnected

63: Nurses Overcoming Addiction- Kacie Salas, BSN, RN, NC-BC Highlights
"My coping mechanism was, drinking and using. I think symptoms of cumulative caretaking trauma are shame, guilt, anxiety, grief. Right? Once I started to learn that language, I realized that it had been something I've really suffered with my whole life.
Through Nurse Coaching and all the tools that I learned in my Nurse Coaching program, I was able to start to guide my private clients and my debriefing clients through that process where I think, again, just opening up the conversation, you know?
And making people feel like they're less alone. They really just want to feel seen, heard and validated. And not feel alone." ~Kacie Salas, BSN, RN, NC-BC
Ah-Ha Moments
- Addiction as a coping mechanism is often hidden within the Nursing world because of shame, and because we are held to such high standards in the public eye
- Sobriety exploration can create hope and healing in your life

62: Group Coaching in Hospitals: Healing Together- John Piazza DeDonatis Highlights
Ah-Ha Moments
- There may be a time you feel an ‘itch’ to do something else. What would happen if you decided to follow it?
- Do some research about Nurse Coaching, especially if you’re on the fence. You deserve to look deeper into the things you are curious about
- Group Coaching allows for more touch and connection with more humans
- Try not to fall into the ‘advice trap’… instead listen, ask curious questions, allow the person to find their own answers… and ASK them if they want the information before you bombard them with advice or the resources
- As an Integrative Nurse Coach, what do you call yourself? How do you explain what you do to really connect with the person you’re speaking with?
- It’s tough to set your price point… and you CAN do that. What are worth? You’re priceless.
- Keep your heart open for all the possibilities around you! Say Yes to experiences, opportunities to work with clients you may not think you want, as they can become your client!
- Check in with your Nurse Residency Programs as opportunities to implement Nurse Coaching skills and tools.
- Tell people about what you’re doing, they will support you!

61: Vulnerability is Courage- Christie L. Kaywood, RN, BSN, NC Highlights
"Over time, healing and different things like that helped me. And also, with the vulnerability, it's like, these are my goals. And how can I achieve them if I just stay in the same place? How can I achieve them if I don't step up and step out of my comfort zone?" ~Christie L. Kaywood, RN, BSN, NC
Ah-Ha Moments
- Recognizing you need wellness or healing can be very vulnerable. It’s hard to show up for yourself when you really need it!
- Asking for help can feel vulnerable! There are many local (and free) resources to support you in your journey, in whatever way you choose to travel
- You don’t always have to have the answers
- Social anxiety can hold us back, reach out to a counsellor to get help, so you can be in full presence in the amazing person you are!
- Resistance is real! You can move yourself forward, and you also must acknowledge the resistance to move yourself forward
- Reiki energy work can be used for self-care for Nurses
- Auras, crystals and essential oils can help you with your own wellbeing, as well as your patients and clients

Caring for the Caregivers- Renee Panec, BSN, RN, HWNC-BC, CCM, CPHQ Highlights
"It brings up a lot of feelings, too, in caregivers in terms of not only overwhelm, but they may be sad about their current situation. They may experience feelings of... really of grief, of that loss of the life that they anticipated living. And now it's going to be a very different kind of life.
And it's often unacknowledged. From whatever kind of life they've been living, whether they were professionals and had a professional job, or if they were a mom home with the kids, it's still huge." ~Renee Panec, BSN, RN, HWNC-BC, CCM, CPHQ
Ah-ha Moments
- What happens to the caregiver when a patient is discharged home, and they must do everything else they were doing AND care for their loved one?
- Are you pouring from an empty cup? What can you do to love and support yourself? What can you do for you?
- It’s ok to ‘bloom where you’re planted’ and use your skills exactly where you are, without feeling you need to change anything.
- Not sure where to begin, or who you want to work with? Begin where you are. You have experience with something that others may not have.
- What stories have you been telling yourself that hold you back? How could those stories be shifted to support you and what you want today?
- How can you nurture yourself to grow into who you want to be?
- Embrace your power Nurse… you have healing abilities filled with love, give it to yourself and then share it with others.

Ah-Ha Moments
"It's your creation. And you can take it any direction you want. I'm taking it to the gardening, the nature side, the reconnecting with spirit, reconnecting people like me, who get in their head and think too much and don't, you know, don't get in their heart or their body and listen and pay attention to what's going on and what you really need." ~Aaron Williams, BSN, RN, HWNC-BC
- How does the phrase ‘not knowing’ sit in your heart? What could happen when you allow having to know it all, to separate from your all-knowing personality?
- There are many ways to share your gifts in Nursing and in your community
- Find the things that fill your soul, and allow you to heal
- Hands in the soil… grounding, earthing, growing, forest bathing, connecting spirit to nature
- Take a course in gardening, volunteer at a community garden and/or co-op to learn more about growing your own food, and how getting hands in soil and nurturing can help you heal
- Healing Touch and energy work can open possibility, we are all energy
- Resistance is real, it can slow you down, lean in, be courageous
- Roots vs. wings… at different times in your life you'll be grounded and other times you’ll need to fly

How to Take Nurse Coaching Anywhere!- Deborah McElligott, DNP, ANP-BC, AHN-BC, HWNC-BC, CDE Highlights
"Coaching adds the component of not knowing. It was so powerful for me because as an NP, you had to be the expert. You know, as a Nurse, you have to be an expert. You can't give the wrong medication, you'll kill somebody.
You have to be perfect. And this not knowing part of coaching, where you can hold the space for your client, your patient, your peer, and help them discover their best way of becoming who they need to be, was really powerful. You know, knowing that you can be an expert, but you can also be a not knowing person at the same time." ~Deborah McElligott, DNP, ANP-BC, AHN-BC, HWNC-BC, CDE
Ah-Ha Moments
- Nurse Coaching eliminates labels, and teaches us to hold space, and to ‘not know'’
- You can be an expert and not know at the same time
- The skills of Nurse Coaching become part of how you practice as a Nurse, and you will use these skills every day
- If you are looking for a place to practice Coaching and holistic Nursing look at your system, what are they doing, what are their needs, and how can you help them?
- You can simplify some holistic modalities to teach them to your system, or in the community
- You can teach many things through the ‘coaching approach’, as opposed to the ‘telling approach’
- You don’t have to wait for a position to open up, instead, create it for yourself!
- Imagery practices can open up so many healing opportunities for yourself
- Journal questions… what surprised you today? What inspired you? What touched your heart?

“We see this a lot in oncology too, where we're seeing a lot of use of hypnosis in even outpatient oncology, Nurses learning hypnotic language and using it there. Patients starting to feel more supported. Like, I knew you supported me before, but when we add that extra layer of using our communication styles with more conscious effort, our patients feel it, they draw more meaning from those experiences.” ~Christy Cowgill BCH, RN, CRNA, MBA, CHBE, NC-BC
Ah-Ha Moments
- Placebo and beliefs are powerful and can have reduced negative symptomology
- Nocebo is a negative suggestion, like side effects, headaches, nausea, weight gain etc.
- Elimination of or creating positive flips in language and words will support our patients more effectively
- Hypnosis is a state of being conscious and focused and taking in suggestions as if they are true
- Adding in positivity to neutralize the negatives helps support full healing
- Words are important for the meaning you understand for your healing

How to Integrate Energy with Nurse Coaching- Sandra Rousso, MSN, RN, HWNC-BC Highlights
“And that's where we get into that fixed thinking, the black and white thinking, And I use this thing where I say, well, it's not an "or" it's an "and". It's both. It can be both. You can be happy, and you can be sad at the same time. Similar to what I was talking to you when I was with you guys when my brother passed.
Well, I was really sad, however, there were moments there that were just joyful for me. It was both. We're capable, our humaneness is capable. That's wholism to me, that's experiencing the whole. And sometimes I spell holistic Nurse with a W.” ~Sandy Rousso, MSN, RN, HWNC-BC
Ah-Ha's
- Nurses practice under their own license. We are not practicing medicine; we are practicing Nursing
- Going where you are called, despite what others think, will bring you great joy. Go there
- What is your spiritual business plan? Have you considered this concept?
- “Sometimes you don’t have all the answers, you just know you need to begin” Dr. Barbara Dossey
- When you discover your passion, and connect to it, you will inspire others to find their passion
- Share what you know, it will help others blossom
- When we realize we have choice, we realize we are free
- You have an inner still point, and you can find it and return to it

Connecting Hearts with Nurse Coaching- Kim Karraker, RN, NC-BC Highlights
Ah-Has
“We need to teach our Nurses how to find this peace within during stressful times, and it's really just breathing, it's breath work. It's getting our heart electrical rhythm under control, our heart rate variability, and in sync with our emotions which come from the mind.
I know for me, in the critical care world, I definitely didn't stop to breathe during my stressful times. But learning to take a moment and work on breathing and breathing into the emotions of the heart, which are appreciation, caring, love, whatever those good emotions are, finding those and breathing into that emotion.” ~Kim Karracker RN, NC-BC
- Experiencing what it’s like to live with a chronic disease becomes a very authentic way to connect to the needs and desires of patients and clients experiencing something similar
- HeartMath is an easy and powerful tool to use to help clients connect to their own wisdom
- Food is one element of whole-body healing, and Nurse Coaches are using food to help their clients find health

What it’s like to be a Nurse Coach Practicum Student- Holly Blankenship, MSN, RN Highlights
Ah-Ha's
“The practicum is super cool, because I'm getting a little taste of what it's going to be like to have my business and how I want it to be. I get to be creative and provide space for people… and I get to see whole changes with them and goals being reached during it.” ~Holly Blankenship, MSN, RN
- Nurses can have health changes because of the stress of death, grief, suffering, the shift work, and extreme measures of caring for others over themselves.
- We are all connected as humans, through human, real life experiences.
- It’s OK to work with a therapist and make yourself the number 1 priority!
- Is being a ‘people pleaser’ really serving you?
- Whole person wellness, real foods, solid sleep and rest, acupuncture, movement, stress reduction, and caring for
- There is a big difference between counseling and coaching. Coaching helps people reflect and dig deep to create goals and plans of action
- Self-efficacy must be built, reinforced and supported in order to make change
- Nurse Coach Practicum is challenging, and yet, oh so cool and amazing, in personal and professional growth.

Ah-Has
- Nurses are juggling so many people, things and needs. How can you step back and create space for you within all of it? It’s OK to do that.
- It’s hard to set boundaries, and you can still set boundaries!
- How can you share your obvious gifts with the world?
- Who is your influence as a Nurse and a Human?

Ah-Has
“There's so much that needs to be done, so much change that needs to happen. How will we ever do it? And then I step back and it's like, one Nurse at a time, one situation at a time, one ripple will start making that change. And then it doesn't seem so overwhelming, I think.” ~Karen Day, MSN, RN, NC-BC
- We can make change, one Nurse at a time, one situation at a time
- Our younger Nurses are training younger Nurses as preceptors, teachers, and mentors. Many of them don’t have lots of experience. How can we support them with more grace, acceptance and resources
- Nursing needs to create a culture shift to truly support each other without judgement. We can do this by honoring our past, learning from it, acknowledging it and shifting towards more self-care, resources, and each other
- The pressure of perfection does not always support us and can be a pathway to burnout, and Nurses leaving the profession
- Creating sacred spaces, where anything goes, where anything can be said, where it is safe to share and discuss. This is different than a route cause analysis, or a clinical debrief, however… there is potential to create a sacred space in those areas too!
- Acknowledge the strengths in each other. Acknowledge that you see another Nurse struggling, and ask them how you can help
- What can help you feel better? Mindfulness? Movement? Time alone? Time with friends? Going outside?
- Including Nurse Coaching in all Nursing curriculum will support Nurses better on their journey

Debriefing to Heal Nurses- Tara Ryan Kosmas, MSN, RN, NC-BC, CHSE, SOAR
“It’s the backbone of how Debriefing the Front Lines kind of defines Nurse Coaching.
We as humans are this collection of stories, and Nurse Coaching enables the client to connect with themselves through this intentional dialogue that creates meaning and acceptance in the story, during the good, the bad, and the painful parts.” ~Tara Ryan Kosmas, MSN, RN, NC-BC, CHSE, SOAR
- We must talk about the suffering and trauma we experience as Nurses, even if it is difficult
- Alone is no longer enough. Find colleagues, organizations and people who support you, pay for debriefing and coaching if your organization does not offer it
- It’s time to put yourself fist, in a loving, no-judgment way
- Cumulative caretaking trauma is a result of ongoing, overexposure, day in and day out, to abnormal and traumatic events, with no time for acknowledgement, discussion, processing, and recovery, that leads to emotional, physical, and spiritual suffering.
- Part of the trauma Nurses face as a result of COVID, was a feeling that our systems betrayed us. For example, lack of PPE and resources, Nurses having to work at the bedside while other professions did not, drastically changing protocols without much notice
- Psychological first aid, peer support and debriefing can be offered by Nurse Coaches to prevent burnout and improve turnover

How to Unlearn and Relearn in Nurse Coaching- Pam Melson, MSN, RN, NC Highlights
Ah-Has
- Learning, unlearning and relearning allows opportunity and possibility to unfold
- You don’t have to know it all, and it’s ok to change the way you do things at any point in your life
- Nurse Coaching is a beautiful beginning for healing whatever you want to support or heal
- All Nursing schools should have a Nurse Coaching component in the curricula
- Healers are more resilient when they acknowledge this ability within themselves
- Be patient, be still, allow alignment, as it always seems to align
- We are all just walking each other home
- Nurse Coaching is a means to find the home that is inside you
- The art and science of Nursing, plus the magic of Nurse Coaching

Letting Go of Critical Care to Find Nurse Coaching: Nicole Vienneau MSN, RN, NC-BC
“I said, “Well, I'm a Holistic Nurse.” And I've never said that before. Because I've always been a Critical Care Nurse. But through this journey of Nurse Coaching, I have uncovered a deeper way of being a Nurse.” ~Nicole A. Vienneau MSN, RN, NC-BC
Ah-Has
- When Nurses come together, anything can happen
- Make the ask. See the no, as a next opportunity. You are never stuck
- It’s important to know that stories and their meanings can change over time based on new learnings and understandings

- Nurses can ebb and flow into different specialties based on their needs, desires and interests
- Symbolism and meaning are important to each person’s story and a Nurse coach can learn more about their clients when they ask open-ended questions and offer silence and deep empathy
- What can happen when you let go of self-limiting beliefs and open to the possibilities?
- It’s ok to ask for what you want and what you need

Ep34: Powerfully Linking Curanderismo and Nurse Coaching- Caroline Ortiz, MS, MPH, RN, NC-BC Highlights
“I see much more of my own learning in this learning about Curanderismo and these practices. “In today's world it is vital we take care of the person on your left, the person on your right, and the ones that matter the most. When you connect with what matters the most, life is... I've learned life is more rewarding.” ~John Huaylinos

Ep32: Valuing Stories of Suffering- Holly Kapusinksi, MSN, RN NC-BC CPNP-PC Highlights
“Every single person has an idea of what suffering is to them. And their suffering may not be the same as mine. I came to understand that I can never label somebody else and their experience as being suffering, or joy, or happiness, or loneliness, or sadness. It's asking them what it is for them. And that has helped tremendously in being able to build therapeutic relationships with patients and clients.” ~Holly Kapusinski, MSN, RN NC-BC CPNP-PC
Aha's
- Stories are an important element of the human experience and need to be told!
- Nurses have so many important stories to tell and to share
- Suffering is a unique experience to each human

Ep31: Nurses: Champions for Social and Racial Justice Highlights
“Change first starts with each one of us as individuals, and we can't be better Nurses or Nurse Coaches, if we're not aware of our own biases, if we're not aware of defensiveness, or those feelings of guilt, or fear, or whatever that comes up when we really do this work. Then we can't really get to the place where we're going to be able to help our patients be healthier.”
~Nikki Akparewa, MSN, RN, MPH
“Jump in now, wherever, whatever calls to you, maybe there's a book group in your community. Join us at Nurse Champions for Justice. Just pick up a book and start reading. Get some podcasts and listen to other people's voices. Listen with that openness and curiosity. Just start. Now, start now.”
~Jayne Peterson, BSN, RN, NC-BC
“In talking about racism as a European descendant, white bodied person is the shame, the shame growing up in a racist country. All kinds of shames that we have. Shame prevents us from being authentic, because we have to hide, if we don't want people to know, our areas of shame, or our areas of vulnerability, we have to hide. This work helps us unpack that.”
~Jackie Levin, RN, MS, AHN-BC, HNWC-BC
At Nurse Coaches for Justice, we focus on the heart felt work of unlearning racism, uncovering the many forms of oppression that exists—seen and unseen, and working to disrupt systems of racism and oppression towards creating a healthy environment where all can be free and thrive, within a supportive and loving community.
Ah-Ha's
- The American Nurses Association defines racism as a public health crisis
- Racial justice work is heavy lifting and must be combined with self-care
- Racial justice work requires community, authentic conversation, deep listening and a willingness to be unbalanced
- To truly care for all humans, we must first look into our own selves to understand our own biases, hidden agendas, fears, guilt, defensiveness and social structures that perpetuate health inequity
- Begin now, in whatever way calls to you, to learn about diversity, inclusion and equity
- Address your Board of Nursing to demand racial justice learnings be incorporated into licensure
- Address your workplace to demand racial justice education for all employees

Ep30: Nurses: The Powerful Future of Functional Medicine Highlights
"When you use functional medicine, you find the "why" for someone, and it is always about their lifestyle, their exposures, their thought processes, everything that really aligned with Nurse Coaching for me, because I was able to help people guide through that process.
It was really fundamental Nursing practice. I realized that RNs are really the future of functional medicine, in my opinion. The skills we get in Nursing school just need to be lit up, and we can really help people heal." ~Brigitte Sager, MSN, RN, ARNP, FNP-C, NCMP, NC-BC
Ah-Ha's
- The functional medicine model is a personalized, patient-centered, science-based approach empowering patients and practitioners to become partners to promote optimal wellness and address underlying causes of disease. Coupling this approach the unique skillset and knowledge of a Nurse’s art and science foundation just makes sense!
- Functional medicine seeks to find the ‘why’ for someone through a collaborative approach
- Functional medicine supports lifestyle strategies and helping patient, clients and communities implement them into their busy lives
- Let’s stop underestimating the solid foundation that Nurses already have. Our education sets us up for success like no other profession. This is why Nurses can do anything and be successful!
- Nurse, you are ready! Never undervalue yourself. Set healthy boundaries. Make connections.
- Healing is the future of healthcare, and that is who we are as Nurses

"We have to consciously remind ourselves, man, I need to take care of myself, right? What does that mean, to take care of yourself? It's another deeper question. It's not just the physical part of the self. It's also addressing your emotional needs, your mental health needs, your spiritual needs, and even your environment." ~Rosie Dominia
____
"I think self-care is at the core of supporting your wellbeing. If you're in tune with what you need, then that's the first step. Asking yourself the question: what do I need right now? I'm feeling stressed, I need to take a break, I need to take a deep breath." ~Emily Bennett
___
"And being able to know there's self-intervention practices and activities that I can do to, I mean, truly create a self-intervention, you know? Like, save myself! Because ultimately, it's up to me. If I can't treat myself the way I want to be treated, how in the world do I expect anyone else to treat me well?" ~Kim Richards
Ah Ha Moments
- Every person has their own definition of what self-care means to them, there is no absolute
- Self-care need not be elaborate. Even a few slow, deep breaths are a form of deliberate self-care
- Business and chronic stress are not normal states and contribute to states of illness and dis-ease, recognizing this and using a self-intervention gets us out of high stress and more in to ease
- How you perceive your own wellness can guide you closer, or further to self-compassion and self-care
- Developing your own sense of awareness around self-care, stress and how you perceive your own worth are drivers for wellbeing
- Self-care evolves as you evolve. What may work once, may or may not work the next time, so continuous self-awareness and exploration are key to caring for self
- A few exploration ideas for self-care (please note it is best to explore what works for you) that were mentioned in the podcast
- Music
- Movement
- Nature
- Cooking
- Deep breathing
- Self-awareness
- Being with others
- Laughter and finding joy

Ep28: Breaking Silos with Nurse Coaching- Denise Ervin, BSN, RN, NC-BC Highlights
"I realized the silos don't work. The barriers don't work. We have to have partnership, we have to have integration, we have to come together as community, as healthcare professionals, so that we can then have the resources, the strength, and the energy to support what the system changes need, as well as what our community needs." ~Denise Ervin, RN, BSN, NC-BC
Ah-Ha Moments
- If you want to learn more about yourself, have courage to keep on pursuing what is missing for you. In fact, book a few sessions with a trusted Nurse Coach to help you develop an individualized plan.
- The Universe will allow you to connect the dots if you are open to it
- Nurse Coaches can be embedded into hospital and Nursing culture. No one cares for Nurses or understands Nurses like a fellow Nurse
- If you want to offer Nurse Coaching in your facility, do some research about what is happening in your place of work, what are they offering, how can you compliment that, or take it a step further?
- Use your ‘high equity relationships’, those people who you know and reach to them, have courage, no one will know what you have to offer until they hear from you!
- Make connections with Nurses that share your same beliefs and then keep that connection alive, because it can be very lonely doing something new and innovative, plus they’ll help you get through those ‘scary spots’
- Connect to your heart space. Who are you? How do you want to lead as a Nurse?

“There's a million reasons not to start a business, but you only need one reason, and that is because you want to do it, because you want to make an impact, and because your belief that if you invest in your solution — in yourself — that it will work.” ~Catie Harris
- Although Nurses do not generally learn about business concepts in Nursing school, you can easily learn and then apply them into a business you are passionate about
- Nurses have incredible critical thinking skills which are needed to succeed in business ventures
- Not all Nurse Coaches want to go into business, but for those that do, The Business of Nurse Coaching course prepares you with a plan to do so
- It’s imperative to pinpoint the niche you want to work with. Being too much of a generalist makes it confusing for you, and for potential clients
- To be successful in business and build a foundation, you must know the audience you are serving, what problem you are solving for them and who your competition is
- Personal discovery and personal development are key to business and human growth

- Nurse Coaching can be combined with any and many healing modalities like Healing Touch, Reiki, Sound Healing, yoga, meditation, guided imagery, aromatherapy, nourishment, movement and more!
- Nurse Coaching can be used at the bedside with patients, with colleagues, in communities, doctors’ offices, insurance companies, in private practice, in colleges and any other area you can dream of!
- A Nurse may see the tools and journey of Nurse Coaching as a way to begin healing
- Self-care must be a priority to stay energetic and joyful in Nursing practice
- Listen to your heart for what is truly calling you in your life

Ep25: It's Time to Re-Energize Nurses!- Karen Avino, EdD, RN, AHN-BC, HWNC-BC Highlights "The way we can re-energize Nurses is by giving them their voice; they need their voice back. And Nurse Coaching does that for us, it gives us language to use, and it gives us an area that we can then center on in health promotion and focus, and that's what we do, and we do it best." ~Karen Avino
Ah-Ha Moments
- Nurse Coaching curriculum coupled with self-awareness, self-reflection, self-care can re-energize Nurses’ practice
- Transformation is not linear, or a step-by-step process, and can occur with self-development, which includes self-assessment, self-reflection, self-care
- Board certified Nurse Coaches are now included in use of CPT 3 codes, health and wellbeing codes are:
- 0591T Health and Well-Being Coaching face-to-face; individual, initial assessment
- 0592T individual, follow-up session, at least 30 minutes
- 0593T group (two or more individuals), at least 30 minutes
- Resilience is a process, a journey and cannot be created overnight.
- Learning is a continuous process; INCA has created multiple advanced and specialty Nursing programs to enhance Nursing practice and aid in self-care and building resilience in Nurses
- Connecting with like-minded people enhances wellbeing and shared goals
- Instead of turning away from the broken healthcare system, Nurses can make a difference where they are. Stand firm, speak up and break down barriers to shift the way healthcare is being practiced

Ep24: Stop Burnout in Nursing School- Janice Lanham, MS, RN, CNEcl Highlights
"Burnout doesn't just happen when Nurses graduate and start working as a Nurse. In my opinion, I think that in Nursing school, we set them up to burn out because of the intensity and the rigor of these Nursing programs." ~Janice Lanham
Ah-ha Moments
- Nurse burnout is a phenomenon, Nurses are leaving the profession within 3 years of graduation
- While it is imperative that Nursing schools uphold standards of care and enforce critical Nursing knowledge, could the rigor, strictness and strong focus on performance and grades be forming the foundation of burnout?
- Could a happy medium between scholarly and practice performance and wellbeing reduce burnout? How could that look in Nursing schools? How could Nursing professors reshape the present system to incorporate more wellbeing practices into curricula? Could Nurse Coaching be an answer?
- Nursing schools could focus more on student’s wellness by incorporating more wellbeing practices into curriculum, like journaling, mindfulness and meditation, movement, music, and self-care and other complementary practices
- The use of present research on Nurse Burnout in combination with research supporting complementary modalities can be used to establish credible ways to support Nursing student and Nursing professors’ wellbeing
- A 2021 JAMA of Psychiatry study shows that Female Nurses have double the risk of suicide than women in the general public
- No Nurse can function from an empty cup. Focus on caring for self, and establishing routines of self-care are imperative to prevent burnout, potential risk of suicide and enhance joy, happiness, gratitude, calm, purpose and satisfaction

"...let's just have a moment where you're looking inward and you're quiet and relaxed, and give them the gift of some positive suggestions. That is as simple as hypnosis is. And then having that science to support it and having the know-how to weave that into Nurse Coaching. It's so intuitive and automatic when you overlay the science of hypnosis— which is ages, ages old— and weave that into our Nursing healing model." ~Christy Cowgill
Ah-ha Moments
- Words are very powerful and how we choose to use them can help patients, clients and communities shift their perspectives
- Instead of asking, “what is your pain level?” try asking, “how comfortable are you?” And see what happens
- Instead of asking, “are you nauseated?” try asking, “are you hungry?” And see what happens
- Nurses are pairing the skills of Nurse coaching with techniques, tools, and practices they are passionate about to connect with their deeper purpose as a Nurse and human

Ep20: Living While Dying- Jan Booth, MA, RN, NC-BC Highlights
“There is so much taboo and phobia, and reluctance to talk about death and dying and even though I may be a conversation opener in end-of-life, I still grew up and was formed within a culture that did not want to talk about death and dying.” ~Jan Booth
- Nurse Coaches begin where a person is in their own health, and they are open to discussing brokenness, hope, wellbeing, resilience
- All of us will die, yet there is an illusion that we all have time, so health is not urgent. Someone who lives with a serious illness, or is at their end of life has a different sense of urgency
- Nurse Coaches make a difference by talking about difficult situations and use their voices to make change in the present broken health care system
- Nurse Coaching is understanding how people change, seeing a readiness to change versus not readiness to change, and what contributes to their readiness to change
- People must believe they can change and have a vision for something different than what is. This does not come easy to most, so a partnership with a Nurse Coach is essential
- At the heart of coaching is a capacity to be fully present, to not be afraid of what someone is wrestling with, to not need to fix it, to not shut ourselves off because we're afraid, but to be able to be fully present. These are the keys to working with someone who's living with serious illness.
- Death is a natural process. Nurse Coaches can teach the human skills of how to incorporate death and impermanence into how we live. If we don’t learn the human skills of how to care for each other, we'll continue to feel lost

Ep16: Pain Management and Nurse Coaching- Megan Filoramo MSN, RN,FNP-BC, RN, HWNC-BC, AP-PMN Highlights
“Maybe I want to do pain management because I really see the limiting beliefs in pain patients, and I think probably anybody who's worked with people in chronic pain know exactly what I'm talking about.
But when I thought about it a little bit more, I really saw a parallel between pain patients and Nurses, and the parallel was the suffering from the circumstance. If I'm picking somebody to serve, if I'm picking somebody that I feel will have the greatest impact in the world, that's Nurses.” Megan Filoramo

Ep13: Group Coaching for Couples and Women- Annabeth Elliott, MSN, RN, NC-BC Highlights“One of the group coaching norms we have for the group was not to give advice. So, we are more supportive and ask questions and have ideas of what someone might look at that might be helpful to them. If there is ever a time where we stray away from those norms, I just try to remind everybody what the group agreed upon in the beginning, and then we move forward as a group.” Annabeth Elliott
- Listen to one of our newer Graduates of Integrative Nurse Coaching Annabeth Elliott, what she has learned so far, what she envisions for her future, and how she turned the tables on me to ask me questions towards the end of the podcast
- Group Coaching offers wisdom from everyone in attendance. It is powerful when groups do not give advice, instead, they are supportive, ask questions and hold space for the person speaking
- Coaching for couples around lifestyle specifically food can be lifechanging, since so much time is spent preparing foods. Having real conversations with couples can open up more possibilities for mutual understanding related to food choices, needs and desires
- Nurse Coaches need to be present and be in the moment, this is the only way one can truly hear and understand
- Nurse Coaches do not give advice, instead they strive to help you pull out your own wisdom to find solutions

Ep12: Nurse Coaches, Innovative Healthcare Leaders- Nicole Piotrowski BSN, RN, HWNC-BC Highlights
“I work with innovative healthcare teams, mainly in the startup world now, that are on a mission to create a new kind of healthcare delivery system focused on relationship-based care -- taking care of the whole person instead of the bottom line, that value-based care.” ~Nicole Piotrowski, BSN, RN, HWNC-BC
- Nurse Coaching is an innovative healthcare process that places the patient, client, family or community as the center of the conversation, plan or care
- Startups like Vori Health are using Nurse Coaches and see them as innovative healthcare role models
- Nurse Coaching can be as close as a telephone call, or an app on your phone
- It is collaborative to work in a system where every practitioner knows the client and each healthcare professional (regardless of specialty) has the autonomy to refer clients to modalities that will help them
- Patients are not ‘non-compliant’. Instead, there is a barrier that they cannot cross, and because of that, it is difficult for them to follow a plan, that ultimately was never truly created for them
- Nurse Coaching gives the client the ownership and power of their own health decisions
- Integrative Nurse Coaches help people make small meaningful change, establish goals, and make little lifestyle behavior changes, to make a huge difference in someone's overall health
- What would happen if Nurse Coaches were in all settings throughout America? People would be A LOT healthier!

Ep.11: Environment Impact because of Nurse Coaching - Susan Luck, BS, RN, MA, HN-BC, CCN, HWNC-BC Highlights
“When we talk about the environment, we're not only talking about our external environment and the chemicals externally or the air pollution, but we're looking at our internal environment and the interconnectedness. A lot of times, our internal environment is also growing organisms that may be deleterious and may also impact our immune function, our brain function, our cardiovascular function, and certainly, based on one's predisposition in genetics, everything in between.” Susan Luck, BS, RN, MA, HN-BC, CCN, HWNC-BC
- Bringing awareness to the importance of environmental assessments, environmental conversations and awareness, and how the environment impacts health and wellbeing has been a lifelong passion of Susan Luck.
- A few great environmental focused Nurse Coaching questions: how does your environment support your health and wellbeing? Are there areas in your home or in your workplace or in your community that might be impacting the community health and wellbeing or your family's health and wellbeing?
- A Nurse Coaches voice is integral in shifting beyond the present medical model and into a more holistic integrative way of thinking about what is health, and what is wellbeing.
- How life experiences, curiosity, education, and nursing knowledge all contribute to the wisdom of a Nurse Coach. Nurse Coaches are continuously curious.
- When Nurses were not invited to the table at Harvard when coaching was being discussed, the Co-Founders of the International Nurse Coach Association brought themselves to the table demanding to have a part in the coaching discussion. They were not welcomed with open arms and had to prove Nurses belonged there, and even write a white paper about Nurses and health coaching.
- If you are passionate about something, learn about it, speak about it, be curious and ask questions about it. Then, bring it forward every chance you can.

Ep10: Awareness is the Key to Nurse Coaching - Joni O'Neil, BSN, RN, NC-BC Highlights
“Becoming aware of our thoughts, our feelings and our actions in the moment, and having the ability to become aware when we're not. So many of us live our lives on autopilot.” Joni O’Neil
- Nurse Coaching brings people an awareness, becoming aware of your thoughts, your feelings and your actions in the moment, and having the ability to become aware when you’re not.
- Awareness can help you recognize you have an autopilot brain, and that you have, (what Joni calls) a ‘thought genie’. Your frontal brain, and your ability to make conscious decisions.
- When you can tap into the thought genie and recognize that your autopilot computer brain is running on habit and can just breathe and decide that you want to reprogram that computer, that auto-brain, you can.
- Awareness is knowing that you have the choice. If you want to stay in the autopilot, fine, choose it, own it, be there. But if you don't, knowing that you have the power to decide what you want to think about. And it's not that you just say, “Okay, I'm going to think this” and then you think it.
- Nurse Coaching helps you become aware of your power. To frame your brains, focus your brains on what's important to you and what serves you and what's valuable to you.
- Begin with what you are passionate about, and work from your strengths and where you can use that in your coaching.
- Nurse coaching is its own skill and its own science. In Nursing education, you can often learn how to educate, and coaching and education are two distinctly different skill sets.
- A Nurse Coach does not need to be the expert of everything, instead it is all about the person, their feelings and what they are going through, and where they want to go. It is not about the disease or illness process.

Ep 9: Flower Essence with Nurse Coaching- Anna Yang, RN, HNB-BC, HW-NC Highlights "A sunflower is a wonderful flower essence to take for if you feel like you don't have a strong enough backbone. If you have to speak out into the world, and you don't want to, it's a good one for someone who's shy because it helps you be comfortable being seen. It's a good one to use if you're wondering what's your path in life or are you confused or you're not sure what to do, because the leaves follow the sun, so they follow the path of light." ~Anna Yang
- A sunflower with its tall stem and big, open face, is a flower essence to explore if you feel like you don't have a strong enough backbone. If you have to speak out into the world, and you don't want to. It's good for someone who's shy because it helps you be comfortable being seen
- Using affirmations can help by stating something positive in the present time that you want to have happen, and then saying them with intentions
- Sometimes, because of our own health journeys we discover things that speak to our own healing that we can use to help others heal as we heal
- A Nurse can combine Nurse Coaching with anything they are passionate about. In Anna’s case, she combines Nurse Coaching with flower essence, labyrinth facilitation, and women’s studies to offer possibilities to shift health and wellbeing in her community
- Holistic Nursing has a body, mind, spirit approach to everything
- The profession of Nursing is a foundation for many other educational, professional and personal learnings and experiences
- Nurses can use their skills and professional experiences to offer programming, ideas, education and tools for their communities. Whatever Nurses develop will support their communities and interests successfully

Ep8: Creating Community to Fill the Gap- Jodi Tansky, BSN, RN, HWNC-BC Highlights
“It's creating community, right? Part of the big piece of the Blue Zones is having that community. And I'm very saddened about how we maybe lost some community in this past year. However, I think some resilience in people has pushed them to different communities or different ways of connecting that they normally wouldn't have done.” Jodi Tansky
- How creating community and noticing a gap in community services lead to opening Elevate Wellness Center in Fairbanks, AK.
- The stress of an adrenaline-seeking lifestyle can do a disservice to one’s health. Seeking other ways of healing self can lead to more success, calm and more in life as a Nurse and a human.
- Nurse Coaching teaches the tools to slow down and find moments for self-care.
- Nurse Coaches are combining their passions with the skills of Nurse Coaching. In this podcast, Jodi combines her passion of integrative health, functional medicine, and nutrition into her practice.
- Nurses are practitioners in their own right and can be confident in that!
- When you believe in yourself, anything is possible, and all things fall into place.

Move More Freely Through Life - Judy Fasone MSN-ED, RN, CTP, HWNC-BC, AHN-BC Highlights
“My focus is self-care through movement, to move more freely, and I call it a moving meditation. Because if we slow our movements down and really become more aware of how things are working, it changes our whole way of being in the world.” ~Judy Fasone
- When you move more freely, it allows you to follow your heart, and this offers many more opportunities to feel joy and happiness.
- Combining Nurse Coaching with other modalities one is passionate about allows Nurse Coaching to become more personalized to the Nurse and to clients, patients, and communities.
- Nurse Coaches are entrepreneurs, and can also work in more traditional Nursing roles.
- Nurse Coaching reduces the use, impact, and burden to the healthcare system, because the skills of a Nurse Coach help people understand they can learn to rely on their own wisdom. It also helps them act earlier, instead of waiting for illness to happen.
- Shifting Nursing practice to telehealth and becoming more comfortable in the virtual space opens more opportunities for Nurse Coaches to reach into their communities.

Ep6: Immacula Jean-Charles, MSN, APN, FNP-BC, RN Highlights
“As Nurses, we're just such jack of all trades. Hey! Hello, I'm a Nurse {Coach}, I have all this knowledge, I can help you achieve whatever goal it is that you need to achieve. I am here to support you in achieving those goals and I can help you in any capacity.” Immacula Jean-Charles
- Nurse Coaches are the Jack of All Trades. Nurses have incredible skills, knowledge, passion, intuition, innovation, and integrity and can excel in any area they choose to be in.
- Burnout and fatigue in nursing are rampant and may Nurses consider leaving the profession because of it. It’s not because they are not passionate about the work. Instead, they become burned out with the hours, the stress, the emotional drain.
- Nurse Coaching helps a Nurse slow down, to breathe and focus on the present. It helps one discover what really matters and to discover what one is passionate about in Nursing, so they stay in the Nursing profession.
- Nurse Coaches use all these skills to support patients, clients, communities, and fellow healthcare practitioners achieve whatever goal they want.
- Nurse Coaches can work anywhere! Nurse Coaches can work in hospital settings at the bedside, during care and preparing for discharge. In care co-ordination so the patient’s voice is heard. Doctors’ offices, corporate environments, community settings, schools, universities, everywhere, even in the government.
- Nurse Coaches are the in-between. We have the knowledge, and we have the caring personality to come in and help them to connect, and help them to understand, and help them to express, and help them to create their own plans, and how they're going to take the doctor’s suggestions.

Leslie Heron, RN, MN, ARNP, FNP-BC, NC-BC Highlights
New Ears to Hear
“I think it (Nurse Coaching) gave me new ears to hear what my client’s goal was— and, you know, maybe bend them to my will a little bit (laughter)— and have them voice that goal and what they really want to work on. It made my work in cancer survivorship much more meaningful and accessible to my patients after getting my Nurse Coach certification.” Leslie Heron
- Nurse Coaching impacts a healthcare practitioner’s view over their work positively and saves productivity and healthcare costs, because patients are not returning to the ED or clinics as often, since they are choosing to focus on goals and ideas that are central to their needs, not the practitioners. Practitioners have greater satisfaction and connection with their patients because of this partnership.
- There is a big difference between the ‘prescriptive’ way of healthcare and the 'open ear' way of Nurse Coaching. Leslie speaks to the difference in depth.
- Nurse Coaching provides Nurses more ease in their work. Instead of always ‘driving the bus, looking for directions, and leading the way’, a Nurse Coach may say, “Well, what direction do you want to drive the bus? And I'll help you, I’ll say ‘turn left here’, but I don't have to be the one reading the map all the time.”
- A Nurse can use the skills and tools of Nurse Coaching anywhere they practice.
- What happens when one can “Move at the speed of guidance.” (Michael Lerner)
- Sometimes you must move a step above the chain of command when you hear the word ‘no’, from your supervisor to get answers you want and need.

Episode 4: Michelle Mortimer, BSN, RN, HN-BC Highlights
Self-care means making sure that I have enough, that I am full enough on my own, that I'm eating healthy foods, that I'm managing my stress, that I'm noticing when I'm really stressed out, and like, taking a step back, and that I'm taking care of my physical being and also relationships; it's all part of it, you know, we look at the whole being. ~Michelle Mortimer
- Creating Nurse Coaching magic. Nurse Coaching is magical. There's magic in that pause, in that space-the magic allows that person you're with to connect with their true self and be it and that's when the magic happens.
- Nurses bring their scientific background, all of their training, assessment skills, critical thinking and more to the table. This is why Nurses are highly effective health coaches.
- Nurse Coaches are innovative entrepreneurs and running their own businesses in our communities.
- When one listens with deep awareness, it helps bring out things people don't realize they were saying or thinking. This listening helps people identify their own goals, which makes them much more successful.
- Hearing without judgment. The more expression people are able to do, along with acknowledgement and validation, and then creating smart goals, starting small, and having small successes and then building upon them. It really works! That whole process works.
- Nurse Coaches help people process big changes (like diabetes). Instead of just going home with a paper printout that tells you all these things, you're going to work with a Nurse Health Coach and they're going to help you process that and really work through it. I see that as being a huge opportunity.

- Lindsay Johnson
- Embracing self-care as soul-care can shift the way you care for yourself, without caring about yourself, and this is very important in times when one feels self-critical, or in self-doubt. Caring for yourself without caring about yourself oftentimes allows self-love.

Lindsay’s Top 'Soul-Care' Practices
- Get enough restful sleep and go to bed early.
- Move your body every day through yoga, Peloton biking, or a hike.
- Eat food that makes you happy, whether its chocolate or a Whole 30 meal.
- Access emotional and mental health through counseling and self- work.
- Release feelings of guilt for needing and doing self-care practices.
- Believe in your worth.
- Set boundaries.
Tips for Nurse Coaches and Healthcare Practitioners
- Set boundaries.
- Find what speaks to you and follow that.
- Sometimes creating a space for what you need help in, can be both a source of support and a source of revenue.

And I know we're doing the work to get health care to see how important we are. I envision us being in every doctor's office, in every healthcare setting, in every hospital. I see us being very present and helping our communities heal." Anna Schlosser
- Present healthcare is incomplete. If we continue to just share information and educate (which is important), the patient’s wishes, needs and desires get lost in the shuffle. Nurse Coaches are moving healthcare towards holistic health, integrating mind body spirit, healing.
- Nurse Coaching gets to the core of the issue, and dives below the surface to uncover possibilities that allow shifts in behavior to be more meaningful to clients, patients, and communities.
- Nurse Coaches use many modalities to partner with clients to uncover their deepest needs and desires. In this episode, Coach Anna RN speaks to meditation, Emotional Freedom Technique (tapping) and chakras, and how she uses these modalities in her practice.
- Self-care is not indulgent, it's not luxurious, I think we have this idea that it's selfish. And I would like for all of us to get over that. Doing what we need to do for ourselves and letting go of that shame and guilt around making our own decisions.
- Self-care is having compassion and kindness for myself and making choices that are right for me.
- Nurses don't have to have everything figured out or have all the answers. But we do have to do the inner work, so that we can hold space and be compassionate and empathetic and help someone else through.
- “To the Nurse Coach starting out, to the entrepreneurs who are starting their own businesses. Keep going. It's scary to be seen. It's scary to take yourself seriously. But it's important to keep doing the work because there are people out there who need you. You're contributing something special. And if you're feeling called to do it, then it's the right thing to do.” Anna Schlosser
