Patrick Carpenter is Singer/Songwriter from Jackson, Ms. He moved to Nashville full time after being a part of several acts in Mississippi and quickly joined other artists and bands on the Nashville circuit. His First studio album “Chasing Me” debuted at #1 on the iTunes singer/songwriter charts in 2021. Carpenter has amassed over 10 million streams and opened for acts such as Grammy Award Winner and Rock N’ Roll Hall Of Famer, Sheryl Crow. It’s also drive time here at MPB, and we’ll be telling you how you can make a difference during the show.

Two men that Marshall has known for several years are in the house today to talk about a very cool event. What began as a small church-sponsored afternoon of music 40 years ago is now one of Jackson’s major fall festivals with top musical talent on two stages, food trucks, children's activities, arts and crafts vendors, and more. Since the festival began in 1984, WellsFest has raised more than $1.5 million for local non-profit agencies. Malcom White and Raphael Semmes are here to talk about the festival and this year's beneficiary: The WellsFest CARES Musicians Emergency Fund at the Community Foundation for Mississippi.

It is no exaggeration to call Mike Duke the poster child for MPB’s mission of education and serving the community. Blind since birth, Mike attended the Mississippi School for the Blind and Mississippi State University, where he earned a degree in communications. He then worked as a commercial radio announcer for 12 years before joining Mississippi Public Broadcasting as director of the Radio Reading Service of Mississippi in 1988. Radio Reading Service of Mississippi features on-the-air readings of newspapers, books and magazines for persons who are unable to read the printed word.

Bibliophiles rejoice, the annual Mississippi Book festival is here at last. One of the most anticipated state events, this celebration of literary achievement takes place at the capitol every year. Dozens of panelists from around the country will be talking about their books, including yours truly, so my producer Lacey will be asking me some questions about my new children’s book, Saving Sam. We’ll also be chatting with Book Festival director Ellen Daniels and artist Noah Saterstrom.
Ellen Daniels served as the festival’s Literary Director from 2019 to 2021, when she then became the Executive Director. Ellen is a fanatic of all things art. In addition to her prior work as a gallery assistant at Fischer Galleries and her own fine art photography training, Ellen also brings more than a decade of experience at Lemuria Books to her leadership position.
Noah was raised in Mississippi and educated at Scotland's Glasgow School of Art. His paintings are in public and private collections worldwide. His work has been covered in the Wall Street Journal, Forbes and The New York Times. His exhibition "What Became of Dr. Smith" is on view at the Mississippi Museum of Art through Sept 22, 2024, and a book of that artwork will be the subject of his panel at the 2024 Mississippi Book Festival.

Ryan Parker is the Executive Director of the Mississippi Film Society, a non-profit that is working to bring unique film screening experiences, film-based educational programming, and a prison screening program to Mississippi. A Brookhaven native, Ryan has been working in the film industry as a producer and marketing/PR consultant for the last 12 years. He has already made his mark this month by providing unique experiences for his statesmen and we’re excited to learn what’s next.

He’s been an attorney for nearly five decades, but he’s also a pretty darn good author. That’s right, we have entertainment attorney and 2024 Mississippi Book festival panelist X.M. Frascogna in the house. Known by his friends and family as simply Mike, X.M. has specialized in entertainment and sports law since the early seventies. He has co-authored with his sons five books about football set in his home state of Mississippi, but we’re here to chat mostly about his first full-length non-fiction work, The Saints of St. Mary’s.

It is Education Week here at MPB Think Radio and most of our shows are taking part in a very important theme- education and back-to-school topics. Who better to talk about this than the 2024 Mississippi Teacher of the Year, Shauna Waters. Currently teaching English at East Lauderdale High School in Collins, Shauna Waters has been a teacher since 2001. She has taught in Indiana University’s Intensive English program, and in the Comparative Cultures department of Aichi University in Japan. Her Teacher of the Year honor joins a shelf of other awards, including a Yale Educator Award in 2019.

A Vicksburg native and Ole Miss graduate, today’s guest uses incredible storytelling skills only the south can provide. Ellis Nassour has a background in Journalism and has been writing books about the history of Broadway musicals for decades. He is back home this week to sign copies and inform his statesmen of his newest book, Jesus Christ Superstar: Behind the Scenes of the Worldwide Musical Phenomenon. In this book Nassour shares little-known stories about the production of the record and show, a controversial re-telling of the biblical story of Judas’ betrayal of Jesus of Nazareth.

Leña (which translates to firewood) makes dough from scratch and brings it to life with traditional proofing practices. MBS is a community based blood center that serves hospitals throughout the state of Mississippi and was established 45 years ago. Our first guest in the month of June is a local activist determined to save lives. Christina Dent is the Founder & President of End It For Good, a Mississippi-based nonprofit advocating for approaches to drugs that prioritize life and the opportunity to thrive. Christina supported a criminal justice approach to drugs until her experience as a foster parent sparked her curiosity about drug policy. What she learned changed her mind about the best ways to reduce drug-related harm, and in 2019 she gave a TEDx Talk and launched End It For Good to invite others to consider a different approach.

We are honored to welcome an iconic Mississippian from an iconic family to the show today. Reena Evers-Everette is the daughter of civil-rights activists Medgar Evers and Myrlie Evers-Williams. Born in Mound Bayou, Mississippi, she studied business merchandising at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology. She is now executive director of the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Institute in Jackson, Miss., the same city where he saw her father assassinated at their home in 1963. In addition to the Institute, Reena serves as an Advisory Board Member for the Mississippi Free Press and is currently a W.K. Kellogg Foundation Community Leadership Network fellow.

Francine Reynolds has been the artistic director at New Stage Theatre in Jackson since 2006, and has worked as a theatre artist for 35 years. A Michigan native and current Jackson resident, Reynolds has served three terms on the board of directors for the Theatre Communications Group, a national organization for American theatre; and is on the board of directors for the Mississippi Theatre Association. She has directed and performed in a plethora of theater performances and is committed to the growth of artistic opportunities in Mississippi and beyond.

Kate Medley is a North Carolina-based visual journalist and filmmaker documenting the American South. Her photography work explores issues of social justice, community, and the shifting politics of states like Mississippi. Her work has been featured in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, and her collection “Thank You Please Come Again: How Gas Stations Feed & Fuel the American South” is currently on display at the Mississippi Museum of Art. She is originally from the Magnolia state, and received a Masters in Southern Studies from the University of Mississippi.

Currently serving as the head honcho of the Mississippi Children’s Museum, Susan Garrard has been with the museum since it’s inception, serving as a volunteer when the museum was still in its planning stages. Originally from Sebastopol, she earned her undergraduate degree at Mississippi State University before attending the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. She and her family eventually moved back to Jackson where she would eventually serve as the first ever executive director of the museum, which has recently been named one of the top 5 children’s museums in the country.

Dr. Roderick Little is an accomplished conductor, clinician, adjudicator, composer, arranger, drill writer, and instrumentalist, and currently serves as Director of Bands/Assistant Professor of Music at Jackson State University. A native of Jackson, he grew up in a musical family/background, and received his Bachelors and Masters in Music Education, and a Doctorate in Urban Higher Education Administration, all from JSU. He has worked in some form of leadership role for the Sonic Boom since 2012, and has witnessed a plethora of successes and opportunities that the collegiate band has seen, including a recent Super Bowl Halftime Show performance.

Our guest today is Peter Zapletal, one of those most recent recipients of a Governor’s Arts Award. A five-time Emmy Award-winning puppeteer, Peter had an illustrious career right here at Mississippi Public Broadcasting that spanned over several decades, and recently retired as the director of the Puppet Arts Theatre, a professional touring theatre company. Originally from Czechoslovakia, he has a Master’s Degree in Puppetry from the Academy of the Performing Arts in Prague and immigrated with his family soon after to New York.

Sally Burchfield Doty was recently named as the first director of BEAM - the Office of Broadband Expansion and Accessibility of Mississippi. This office serves as the State's sole point of contact for broadband policy and oversees the administration of federal funding for broadband infrastructure expansion. Sally previously served as the Executive Director of the Mississippi Public Utilities Staff where her team provided recommendations to the Mississippi Public Service Commission on all utility rate filings. While at the Staff, Sally and her team administered 75 million in CARES Act funding for rural broadband resulting in 5,500 miles of new fiber across the state. Her team also applied for and received an additional 32 million in broadband expansion funds that will reach 12,000 unserved Mississippi households.

We are honored to welcome an iconic Mississippian from an iconic family to the show today. Reena Evers-Everette is the daughter of civil-rights activists Medgar Evers and Myrlie Evers-Williams. Born in Mound Bayou, Mississippi, she studied business merchandising at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology. She is now executive director of the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Institute in Jackson, Miss., the same city where he saw her father assassinated at their home in 1963. In addition to the Institute, Reena serves as an Advisory Board Member for the Mississippi Free Press and is currently a W.K. Kellogg Foundation Community Leadership Network fellow.

Bill, a vocalist, guitarist and pianist, has performed professionally for more than 40 years, playing all styles of music from bluegrass to jazz. Bill has also worked for radio and television stations in Jackson and Memphis during his 45-year broadcasting career in several capacities, including news reporter, morning radio personality, account executive and in management. He’s a former executive director of the Mississippi Public Broadcasting Foundation and is currently semi-retired, working part-time with the MPB Foundation.

Coach Bill Courtney is a native Tennessean and an Ole Miss graduate. Though already a successful business owner, in 2003, Bill began volunteering at Memphis’ inner city Manassas High School in an effort to turn its underperforming football team around. In 2003, the team had 19 players with a dismal 4-95, 10-year record. In the 2008 & 2009 seasons, the team’s record improved to 18-2, with 75 players. The story inspired a Hollywood film—Undefeated—which won the 2012 Academy Award for Best Feature Length Documentary. Now an accomplished author and public speaker, Bill travels the southern United States talking to audiences about the power of dreaming big and perseverance. He is also the host of the podcast 'An Army of Normal Folks,' which allows normal civilians that are doing excellent things for their communities to take center stage.

Growing up in a military family, George Fondren knows very well what it means to have loved ones overseas for the holidays. That’s why he and his family are hosting the 8th Annual Christmas for the Troops party on December 9 in Ridgeland. This event has grown considerably over the years and now includes scouts and veterans from central Mississippi. George and his two sons use the event to send care packages to military personnel from Mississippi who are deployed and teach young Mississippians that not all families are together during the holidays. Partnering with Mississippi Project Package, the event has shipped thousands of packages to veterans, and director Rickey Pope calls in to educate us on how MPP supports deployed military personnel.

Our guest today is Paul Elias, who recently made history as the very first bass fisherman to be inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. Paul Elias said he was too small to play football, was “pretty good” at baseball but “was really, really good” at fishing while growing up. A Mississippian thru and thru, Paul is a native of Laurel and a Southern Miss graduate. He turned pro in 1979 and won the Bassmasters Classic in Montgomery in 1982. Twenty-six years later, he set a record that still stands for the largest four-day five-bass limit of 132 pounds, 8 ounces in a tournament at Lake Falcon in Texas.

The 6888 postal battalion was the only predominantly-black, all-female battalion to serve overseas during World War II, and serves as the subject for filmmaker James Williams Theres’ 2019 film “Six Triple Eight,” which will have a free screening tonight in Nachez. James is also an award-winning Executive Writer for the Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington D.C., and joins us on this Veterans Day-centric episode to talk about the importance of immortalizing Mississippian veterans.

Hollywood couldn’t have released a horror movie any more terrifying than what parts of Mississippi experienced Friday night. From Rolling Fork to Amory, a monster wedge tornado scythed its way through the darkness like a serial killer on the prowl. Powerful EF-4 winds left a nearly mile-wide scar across the state, killing and destroying along the way. Twenty-five (and rising) Mississippians lost their lives. It’s the highest death toll from a tornado in the 21st century.

Then radio and television became the center of our worlds. In the late 1990s and early 2000s the internet changed how we got our information. Then in 2007, the iPhone put all that information in the palm of our hands... The world hasn’t been the same since. When people they think of the media, many different things come to mind. But at the end of the day, our democracy depends on an informed public. Even the founding fathers realized the importance of a free press. Thomas Jefferson said it boldly when he proclaimed, “Our liberty depends on the freedom of the press, and that cannot be limited without being lost.”

James Howard Meredith, American civil rights activist, writer, political adviser, and Air Force veteran, inspired by President John F. Kennedy's inaugural address, was the first African-American student admitted to the former racially segregated University of Mississippi. Today, we’re celebrating the diamond anniversary of his enrollment at Ole Miss with a few of the contributors from his newest book, “James Meredith: Breaking the Barrier” - Celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Meredith’s 1962 enrollment at the U of M.
The book, edited by Ole Miss journalism professor, Dr. Kathleen W. Wickham, features contributors: Dorothy Gilliam, the first African American reporter hired by the Washington Post and Sidna Brower Mitchell, former student-editor of The (Daily) Mississippian whose editorial calling for calm, received a Pulitzer Prize nomination. Hailing from Ackerman in Choctaw County, Raymond Edwin Mabus, Jr.’s father would close his hardware Store once a year and the family would travel abroad to collect art, textiles, and historic memorabilia. Fast forward to 2022, Ray Mabus has continued this tradition and in-turn has amassed a wide ranging artifact collection that is currently being curated, by fellow Mississippian and designer of the BB King Museum, Steven Perkins, at his West Virginia home. From child collector to Auditor and Governor of Mississippi, in addition to serving as Ambassador to Saudi Arabia and Secretary of the Navy on behalf of the United States, he discusses the curation of his collection and the journey that led to him becoming one of the most notable individuals in the magnolia state.
