Jim Johnson is a high school basketball coach first and foremost, but a few inspiring moments on an evening in 2006 has since led to a secondary career as a motivational speaker with a team-building message that resonates with business and civic organizations around the country. His kindhearted gesture of giving an autistic student (now known affectionately as "J-Mac") on his team the chance to make his dream come true has captivated the hearts of millions of Americans. How could it not? With the help of his teammates, J-Mac scored twenty points (including six three-point baskets) in just over four minutes, becoming an instant national celebrity. Following that memorable evening, Johnson was named Coach of the Year by several Rochester-area organizations and was also presented with a National Sportsmanship Award. He has been featured in major news outlets around the country, making a number of radio and television appearances, including the Oprah Winfrey and Jim Rome shows. He has met President George W. Bush, Governor George Pataki, and Senator Hillary Clinton, to name just a few luminaries. His team was paid a visit at school by NBA legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson, and J-Mac's magical moment won the ESPY for "Best Sports Moment" at the ESPN awards show later that year. The coach has rolled his accomplishments and experiences into a presentation he very appropriately titled "Dreams Really Do Come True", and his talk emphasizes "The Essence of Teamwork" and "The Ultimate Level of Sportsmanship." Appearing before businesses, youth groups, churches, and other such organizations, Coach Johnson delivers his message with a heartfelt style that has brought audiences to their feet. No need for complicated philosophy. Your own mind, your own heart is the temple. Your philosophy is simple kindness.” The fourteenth Dalai Lama. For many years, I have sought a unifying principle that would significantly contribute to making a better world for our great-grandchildren. In sixty-eight years, I have not found a more rational and meaningful principle than kindness. https://brucewaynemclellan.com/

This special episode includes a favorite anecdote from my trip to Tanzania, Africa, in 2010 to Summit Mt Kilimanjaro. At a deeper level, it initiates a series of insights for me that led to the birth of The One Kind Word Podcast. It explores the question - "What is the most precious substance in the entire universe?" Hi! I am Bruce Wayne McLellan, your devoted servant and porter for this journey we call - LIFE. I am the host and executive producer of the One Kind Word, One Kind Moment, and the Enduring Wonder podcasts. And I am a veteran personal leadership coach with 19+ years of experience. My burning aspiration is to make a better world for our great-grandchildren by doing for adults what Mr. Rogers did for children. My relevant experience includes thirty years in Corporate America as an IT consultant, a lifetime of mindfulness practice, nine days living on a mountain in Tanzania, Africa. I love my family. And I remain a grateful and humble citizen of our little blue planet.

His role is to help companies understand how technology can be used as a competitive advantage to grow the business, increase efficiency, and reduce risk while delivering better products and services. Benz is not your typical techie guy. Originally, he went to college in Binghamton, NY, with the idea of becoming a psychologist or schoolteacher. Coronavirus has pushed us to evaluate our careers in one way or another. We all feel some level of fear, pain, or worry about friends, family, - and the effects on our amazing nation. For me, I had to make a decision. Do I pick up binge eating, get lazy, and get used to staring at the wall? Or do I develop a business STRONGER - than any company I've worked for in the past? That's why I'm here. I am committed to overachieving in my role and doing things right. I provide whatever is necessary to help your business GROW! "I believe we are still so innocent. The species are still so innocent that a person who is apt to be murdered - believes that the murderer, just before he puts the final wrench on his throat - will have enough compassion to give him one sweet cup of water." Maya Angelou
Many of us are innocent of the dark side of humanity. But some are not so lucky—these unlucky people dwell nearby places of darkness - bereft of the light of kindness and compassion. - What really gets me is how did these places become so dark? - It appears that when humans experience a life untainted by abuse and trauma, - kindness becomes a trustful way to live.

"Great teachers emanate out of knowledge, passion, and compassion." A. P. J. Abdul Kalam
Teachers without compassion maintain tainted knowledge and unwholesome passions. Their knowledge lines up with limiting beliefs - that reflect the worst in others. And their passion lines up with fulfilling the deep, dark emptiness within. Teachers with compassion possess belief systems that are tolerant and inclusive of others' points of view. Their knowledge is deep and wide because their hearts accept an expansive and profound worldview. Their passion is centered on service to us all. Compassion is at the core of brilliance, helping make a better world. Compassionate teachers are the leaders of tomorrow.
"Until he extends his circle of compassion to include all living things, man will not himself find peace." Albert Schweitzer
The most potent and detrimental illusion we face is that we can grasp happiness greedily for ourselves. We fail to see truth hidden behind this shroud of opulence. We cannot do much at all alone without each other. We are never genuinely independent. We are instead entirely interdependent. We depend on each other and all creatures for the basics like shelter, food, water, and air. We also rely on others for companionship, collaboration, community, and communication.
One Kind Word acknowledges our interdependence.
Compassion will cure more sins than condemnation." Henry Ward Beecher
It is no wonder that our quick-fix, fast-food society elevates condemnation over compassion. Cursing causes a feeling of exhilaration in the moment. The release of emotion can be gratifying initially. But it can not create lasting positive change for the long haul. On the other hand, compassion requires some humility, tolerance, and patience in the moment. Yet, compassion builds healing, trust, and connection in the long haul. Perhaps, the modern world culture disguises the forces driving us apart as shiny objects of our heart's desire. This short-term fix has an exorbitant cost, and One Kind Word is an investment for generations to come.

"It would be nice to feel that we are a better world, a world of more compassion and a world of more humanity, and to believe in the basic goodness of man." Barbara Walters
Jim Rohn taught us that "We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret." The pain of regret would not be very nice. I believe that suffering can become tremendous and not lessen over time. And although the initial effort required to bridge the gap of kindness is great, that action can become much less painful over time. One Kind Word involves discipline.
"My dad's a beautiful man, but like a lot of Mexican men, or men in general, a lot of men have a problem with the balance of masculinity and femininity - intuition and compassion and tenderness - and get overboard with the macho thing. It took him a while to become more, I would say, conscious, evolved." Carlos Santana
Although men worldwide struggle with balancing traditional male roles with compassion, there is hope. Many men I have met join organizations like the Mankind Project (MKP). https://mankindproject.org/ The purpose of MKP is to create a safer world by growing "better" men. They do this by training men and supporting them in circles. One Kind Word makes a better man.
"I'm no expert standing at a podium giving speeches. I share heartbeats. Compassion." Elizabeth Berkley
For those who speak for others, we must synchronize our hearts with many. To bring meaningful words into being, we empathize when possible, and when not possible, we practice compassion even for those we cannot understand. Empathy requires a shared experience which is not always possible. Compassion is made universal by wishing the best for people we have never met, and even for those, we may find unsavory. One Kind Word enhances communication by sharing heartbeats.
"I think technology really increased human ability. But technology cannot produce compassion." The 14th Dalai Lama
I used to consider technology important for technology's sake. In other words, I felt any new and exciting gizmo was good. I think this confusion is not uncommon. The pristine, dazzling beauty of technology can be seductive. That belief was like a love affair that happens before you get to know someone. Nowadays, my bias has pivoted considerably toward people being more important than technology. When we understand the importance of human connection, everything changes. Compassion is unique to the organic human machine.
"This idea of bringing awareness to our lives seems like a good idea, right? We'll gain a productive, enjoyable, reflective life and be able to extend compassion, empathy, and joy to others. That seems like a pretty good deal." Tara Stiles
Awareness is highly underrated. 'Awareness of what?' you may ask. Awareness of the importance of other people. Awareness of myself and my opportunities to grow. Awareness of others and the challenges they are facing. Those awarenesses constitute the hidden elements of a more productive, enjoyable, reflective life. And they make it possible to participate in genuine compassion and empathy. Awareness is one main secret to helping others be more joyful while helping ourselves be more joyful too!

“The dew of compassion is a tear.” Lord Byron
For me, the dew is such a powerful ever-present metaphor. It can represent natural beauty, new beginnings, or the transient beauty of each moment, to name a few. When we understand that compassion is like dew in many ways, we see the natural beauty of harmonic relationships, the ability to start over in every moment with a kinder-gentler pathway, and the fleeting grandeur of our life. The dew-like tears of compassion enable us to witness beauty, become better people, and relish precious moments shared with loved ones.
"Love is cheering and sharing and compassion and giving and receiving. Love is an action thing more than a word thing, that brings comfort or joy or relief to anyone or anything." Ziggy Marley
Love may be the most remarkable invention of all time. Poets and philosophers have expressed its depth and breadth and width for millennia. Love's endless iterations astound and enthrall all human beings. It is the food of the soul and the hope of friendless millions. It exalts kindness and compassion as its highest forms of human expression. One Kind Word is the universal language of Love.
“Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty.” Albert Einstein
I often wonder what worldview would support embracing all living creatures with compassion. And I hope with all my heart and all of my soul that human beings are capable of that massive worldview. I believe we can expand our worldview because we could lose it all without its realization. Also, I think we would all be much happier to live in a world where that broad perspective is commonplace. One Kind Word promotes a peaceful world.
"The whole idea of compassion is based on a keen awareness of the interdependence of all these living beings, which are all part of one another, and all involved in one another." Thomas Merton
Interdependence arises from the discernment of an enlightened mind. That beautiful mind sees a world where we are all related; we are all cousins. Through the butterfly effect, what happens to the least of us also happens to each of us. We are inextricably linked to all beings. But we believe these links do not exist because we cannot yet perceive them. If we could but catch a glimpse of those connections, how the world might change for the better.
Jennifer Emmons is by all measures a humble, modern-day hero. She is a Registered Nurse and the Executive Director of Hospeace House. This not-for-profit volunteer-driven hospice does not charge residents or their families or receive insurance reimbursement. Emmons discovered her calling in 1997 when first introduced to the hospice philosophy as a Home Health Aide. The depth of her passion became evident when she courageously spent 12 weeks in the NY Metropolitan area assisting those dying alone from Covid-19 during the height of the pandemic. Jennifer was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation in 2021.
MON 12-6 "Many of us think that Compassion drains us, but I promise you it is something that truly enlivens us." Joan Halifax
As with all things, Compassion has a shadow. And that shadow does indeed drain us, especially when we exhaust ourselves from helping others, and there's nothing left for ourselves. This shadow shows up when we expect a return on our investment. It works well in business exchange but not concerning the social capital of relationships. And it does not reflect genuine Compassion. Self-care and self-management are essential elements for cultivating genuine Compassion. When we have enough reserve to give without expectations, genuine Compassion is at play.
Wars begin in the minds of men, and in those minds, love and compassion would have built the defenses of peace. U Than
What we dwell upon plays out in our imagination. If we dwell on fear, betrayal, and hatred, our imagination builds a fort around us in the darkness. By the time we take action, the dwelling and imaginings have already had their way. Defensive destruction manifests in the fields of our imaginings. In contrast, if we dwell on the principles of kindness and compassion, our imaginings will create a world of beauty, goodness, and peace.

"Our lack of forgiveness makes us hate, and our lack of compassion makes us hard-hearted. Pride in our hearts makes us resentful and keeps our memory in a constant whirlwind of passion and self-pity." Mother Angelica
Forgiveness is one of the most challenging compassion practices. We hold onto the 'shield of resentment' as if we remain under full attack. Instead, let go of the hurt and protect yourself through the wisdom of trust. We can learn to what degree we can trust another and then limit the nature of our future interactions. In other words, we can set boundaries. Then, the energy discharged from releasing our bitterness sets us free.
"We need the compassion and the courage to change the conditions that support our suffering. Those conditions are things like ignorance, bitterness, negligence, clinging, and holding on." Sharon Salzberg
Not all but some of our world society maintains that suffering. Many of these conditions are in the hands of our world leaders. These needed changes reflect fundamental human rights to things like education, good food, and water, as well as a trauma-free childhood. In affluent countries, individuals often possess opportunities to improve these conditions independently. These individuals can pursue personal development and healing through self-help, recovery programs, therapy, and life coaching, to name a few. One Kind Word is a fundamental human right.
"As I get older, the more I stay focused on the acceptance of myself and others and choose compassion over judgment and curiosity over fear." Tracee Ellis Ross
I encourage people to ask themselves the questions, "What would it take to accept myself right now, just as I am? " and "What would it take to accept someone else right now, just as they are? " Acceptance eliminates fear and the need for comparison. Promoting the idea that 'I am enough, just as I am, removes barriers and creates an opportunity for connection. One Kind Word is medicine for the body and soul.

"Whether one believes in a religion or not, and whether one believes in rebirth or not, there isn't anyone who doesn't appreciate kindness and compassion." the fourteenth Dalai Lama.
Human spirituality, a shared collection of principles for all sentient beings, is absent of religious dogma. It does not require genuflection or donations. It does require human DNA. It does not assign others to ranks of good, better, best, or worst. Instead, it values others equally without conditions. It does not allow some to starve while others overindulge. Human spirituality begins at the place where kindness rules and compassion lives.
"Grief can be the garden of compassion. If you keep your heart open through everything, your pain can become your greatest ally in your life's search for love and wisdom." Rumi
Grief arises as a result of change, a child of uncertainty, which is the nature of our existence. Grief is relative to the level of loss experienced through change. Small losses can result from slight variations in expectations, like being out of maple syrup with French Toast. Great loss happens when it involves something or someone we love. There is a hidden gift in a significant loss. We can realize the magnitude of others suffering through our own. Then compassion is born.
"Human it is to have compassion on the unhappy." Giovanni Boccaccio
There is pervasive unhappiness in the world simply because we are confused about what makes happiness last. The poor man believes bread, water, and education will make him happy until he discovers it is a fundamental human right. The successful man thinks money and fame will bring happiness until he finds that it is a fleeting illusion. The enlightened man has compassion for the poor and successful man because he understands that lasting happiness comes from overcoming obstacles that make us seem separate and keep us apart. One Kind Word can bring lasting happiness.
