This episode was not planned but when Aubree Cutz interviewed Kaye Genin, our future podcast host for a "Getting to Know You" intro episode, a natural conversation about our current happenings with Covid19, came out of it. Therefore, the episode was split. Please excuse the lack of intro and outro, and enjoy a raw conversation with minimal edits about how we feel as moms in the midst of this global pandemic. Sophie is my sweet cousin and her and her husband live in China. As of a few days ago, they got to meet their new precious daughter that they adopted from China. Since Sophie was in middle school, she felt like God placed it on her heart to adopt a baby girl from China, so hearing her story and watching that dream unfold over the last twenty years has been amazing! This conversation gives more insight of the beginning stages of what the international adoption process looks like. This call was recorded about two weeks before they met their daughter on November 11, so since then they’ve met her and are in the first week of adjusting to their new, sweet, beautiful little family, and all the adjustment and transition that comes with that, so please keep them in prayer!

Jennifer is a mom of three, two boys and a girl all in elementary school. She is homeschooling all three and shares about why they decided that was best for their family, as well as many of the things she loves about it! She gave me a TON of resources below, so be sure to check them out to learn more, and listen to Jen to be encouraged that homeschooling is another great schooling option for a lot of families!
Enjoy a plethora of awesome resources and suggestions from Jen:
Books:
Top Two things that I have learned that all kids need (after Jesus, and no matter where they go to school) is exposure to nature and to quality books.
Instagram: @maandpamodern, @wildandfree.co, @farmhouse_schoolhouse
We used “Five in a Row” for kindergarten and first grade.
It’s a really fun way to introduce all the subjects using a different picture book each week.

Other homeschool accounts I follow: @learningwell, @laced_with_grace_homeschool, @littlewomenfarmhouse, @charottemasonirl, @sally.clarkson,
Also, I forgot to mention "Habit Training," which is one of the Charlotte Mason ideas that I love. She gives great lists of lovely habits that children need to be lovingly instructed in. It really does help them in life if they have good habits. I also love that she encourages gentleness and patience in this training. And to work on one habit at a time.
Charlotte Mason also believed in what she called "Mother Culture," which is time set aside for the mother to enrich herself, whether by reading a good book or learning a new skill. I really want to learn to use watercolors to paint nature, so that's on my list of things to do during my free time each day. I'm not that good at setting aside time for myself, but it's so important for our kids to see us continuing to learn and grow as people who have a variety of interests.

We are a family of six, Sam and Lindsey, Liam, Jude, Delphine and Clementine. We thrive on togetherness in new places, adventuring and wandering down country roads, city streets and boardwalks. Visiting tiny villages and magnificent kingdoms. If it’s been put on a map we want to wander through it. We are making it our life’s mission to travel the world while our children are young and we want to share it all with you!
We consider ourselves world-schoolers and we format what we teach our homeschooled children based on where we are going in the world. There is so much to learn about everywhere and everyone, and we believe that enriching our lives by studying books while we travel to those places benefits us all. Having the children see us absorbed in learning ourselves, is just one more benefit to having our family on this tour of the world together.

YWAM Worship leader, Lindy Conant shares she and her husband’s current journey into parenthood via Foster Care and adoption.
“I went to YWAM in 2007 because I was desperate to see the lost reached. I had no idea God would use music as a vehicle to reach people’s hearts with the love of Jesus. I want my life to be a catalyst for mobilizing a missions movement in our generation, but the way I will do that is through leading worship.”

We are the Rallis Tribe! We are childhood friends who grew up together, got married, had two children, adopted two more, and then realized that the life we were chasing wasn’t meant to be ours.
In March of 2018, we sold our home and cars, donated most of our belongings, and hit the road in our renovated fifth wheel. We live in 190 square feet, work from the road, homeschool our children, and seek adventure in everything that we do. Our mission is to have less so that we can experience more. We are so glad that you are here to see our story unfold!

What began as a small family project, to help children in Foster Care, has grown to a cause that will allow many to walk alongside us, and share the love of God, through words and actions.
Unconditional love gives without expecting anything back (John 3:16), and we believe that we all have more room in our hearts to give.
You are always paying it forward when you give toward our cause, and we genuinely appreciate your support!
Be sure to check back and keep in touch to learn about new and ongoing projects.
Stephen and Susannah, along with their three children, love spending family days together, serving at their church, and welcoming children into their home, as they foster to adopt.

Nashville-based independent singer/songwriter JJ Heller released her 10th full-length studio album, I Dream of You (Volume II). The record is a compilation of 12 favorite cover songs from the 1950’s through today, and three original songs produced to stir feelings of nostalgia for listeners of all ages. Heller’s effortless voice combines with moving piano accompaniment, orchestral arrangements, a children’s choir, and a 10-piece string section to create a truly unforgettable collection of songs elevating the definition of children’s music to an entirely new level.
When Heller released the first I Dream of You album in 2014, she had no idea how significantly it would shape her career. At the time, the mother of two small girls simply intended to create soothing love songs with messages of simple devotion from a parent to a child. After listeners began sharing stories of how the songs played in integral role in their family’s bedtime routines, car rides, or hospital visits, Heller began donating the album to hospitals, adoption agencies, and families of young children. The album has since been donated to over 100,000 families. — Read stories from listeners at jjheller.com/stories
In 2017 after Heller told her producer, Ben Shive, how I Dream of You had became one of her most-streamed albums, he suggested making a sequel. The idea had never occurred to her, but it was quickly embraced and acted on. Soon, with the support of 1,700 fans, Heller raised $80,000 through a Kickstarter campaign which allowed her to hire over 30 musicians, producers and engineers to help her turn the record from a dream into a reality.
Kickstarter backers were given a chance to hear the album early as their reward for financially supporting the campaign, and after her first listen, backer Leeann Hadgis wrote:
“I can't imagine a more perfect mix is songs. I feel transported by the music and whimsy. My children are older so this is an album for me… such an excellent way to start my weekend. I will be buying this for all my friends so they can, feel the same joy I feel, when listening. I am unable to choose one favorite since they all are magical.”
Miles Davis once said “… sometimes it takes you a long time to sound like yourself.” With over 15 years experience as a full-time singer/songwriter, Heller has developed an iconic style of vocal performance. Her unmistakable voice and charming delivery shines from the opening track “It’s Such A Good Feeling” by the much-loved television personality Fred Rogers (Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood) to the closing original track “In The Morning.”

This episode is unique in that the matriarch is the mother-in-law.
It’s not often that you hear such depth in the connection between mother and daughter-in-law. Annie & “Nana” Fran are beautiful representations of what that relationship can be, and it’s amazing to hear how their love for one another has trickled down to even the great-grandkids.

This week I share my chat with the Heiliger/Riddle clan. My dear cousins!
These women have such unique experiences as mothers, creatives, and workers, and they share the not so pretty realities of beginning their journeys into motherhood.

Continuing the theme of legacy with the Allen/Elliott Clan!
These are the kind of friends that are good to have around for all season’s of life, but especially the really, really crappy, hard ones.
Marianne is a retired relational care pastor and a marriage and family therapist and is one of the greatest teachers of life I’ve ever had the privilege to learn from.
Melissa, her daughter, is a wife and office manager, and incredible auntie to her nephews and god-daughters (one of them being mine!).
Kerry is wife to Nathan Allen, momma to 3 boys, surrogate momma to one, and currently on a journey to adopt.
Their stories of motherhood, and of how they navigated the death of husband and father, Brian Allen, are raw and refreshing all at once.
It’s SUCH a privilege to share this intimate talk featuring such spectacular women.
Thank you, Jesus.

It felt appropriate to start off this New Year with an ode to Legacy.
This is a subject we talk about often on the podcast.
How are we living today with the future generations in mind?
What have we learned from those who have gone before us?
I spent an afternoon interviewing my in-laws, Robin Bernhard, Nicole Baumgart, and Abigail Smith.
We cover the 9-year gap between sisters, what it was like growing up on an 800-acre farm, and whether work strains or fuels each of them in their motherhood/marriage journey.

Mountains in the Sea is husband-and-wife indie electropop duo made up of Phil and Angela Lamb. The pair will sheepishly tell you they met online on Facebook through mutual friends in 2011, and after a long distance (like, 3,000-miles-long) whirlwind romance, they married and settled in Spokane, WA. But music was always a part of their story.
Several musical projects and two babies later, the pair finally felt they found their sound as a duo when they began writing for Mountains in the Sea in early 2018. They also are members of five-piece indie rock band The South Hill.

My battle with anxiety and depression began in adolescence. If you had asked me at the time what I thought of myself I would have told you I was too sensitive, ugly, weak, and hopeless.
For years I ached for relief from the burden of myself. I searched high and low for answers, including therapy and medication, yet something was missing.
Then, at 17 years old I found Yoga and everything changed!
While on my mat, I began to see myself through a new lens. I attempted things I had previously believed I was incapable of doing. I stood in awe of my strength as I held a challenging posture and celebrated my ability to use my breath to endure discomfort. As my perception changed, it opened the door to endless possibilities.
Our mind can be our greatest ally or beastly foe. We have the power to change our chemistry by consciously choosing the thoughts we focus on, the way we breathe, and how we hold our body. Knowing this, I cannot help but share with all who will listen.
My practice has been my anchor, through teenage pregnancy, divorce, mental illness, and everyday life. My hope is to walk alongside other women as they refine the tools of this practice, to encourage them along the way, and challenge them toward growth. The broader and deeper our set of tools for living are, the more we can become the hero of our own lives!

Megan’s journey into motherhood was met with lots of resistance from many different sources, along with the possibility that they could pass on a deadly form of dwarfism to their unborn baby.
From spending the first 3 weeks of baby Lily’s life in NICU to being displaced for a time during the terrible Northern California Fires, their journey has been met with grace and simplicity.

Formally, I am a Certified Birth Doula through DONA, a training midwife, and a placenta encapsulation specialist. I work with the amazing midwives at OC Midwifery as a training midwife and will continue to do so as a midwife upon receiving my license. I have poured my heart and life into doula and midwifery work for over 8 years and have attended hundreds of beautiful and varying birth experiences in the home, birth center and hospital. It has been my joy to walk through life and pregnancy with close friends. And an honor to meet new clients who become friends.
I learned from my own birth experience that each story is unique and comes with its own lesson and I hope to honor that with each woman I stand beside.
I am passionate about all things holistic living. Good nutrition, herbal remedies, homeopathy, essential oils, exercise and the mind body connection through meditation are some of my favorite things to talk and learn about. Most of all, I just try to keep it real in a world full of crazy. We all need a little bit more real and honest in our lives.

Peggy Roloff is mother to 4, Grandmother to 10, and Great-Grandmother to 3.
You would not expect one who has endured so much to radiate so much joy, but those who know her know that the love of God follows her.
Having raised two sons with dwarfism and another son who had heart problems from birth who later passed away due to heart complications, Peggy’s life is marked by perseverance, faithfulness, and strength.
Once her children were grown she went back to school, earned her certificate to do substance addiction counseling, and worked at her local church for nearly 10 years.
These are some of the her most treasured scripture references - II Tim 2:7, John 14:27, John 16:33, Phil 4:7, and Matt 7:11.
It was an honor to hear her story and share it with this community!
“When I was 12 my grandmother died and I chose a box of her paints that her sons were tossing out. They were China Paints, which need to be fired on fine china pieces. I searched for someone to teach me but alas there was none to be found. Finally when I was about 30 I found someone at the county fair who was demonstrating. I quickly made the connections and began painting and teaching.
This was a wonderful outlet for me.
For many years I held a Christmas sale in our home so all the family could help and even had their own crafts. Probably 30 people would join us. The house would fill with wonderful fragrances, gifts and ornaments. A very special time.
I recommend it to other women who are mothers of children with problems and those without.”

I’m Kezia a born and bred London girl and my husband Jared hails from Austin, Texas. Somehow we managed to land together in a small Northern Californian town living the dream with our two favorite people Clayton Oak and Rosemary Gold.
Our days are filled with diapers and trains, libraries and paper writing, recipe developing and blogging, traveling and working. But we’re hands down happiest when we all crash round our giant kitchen island, together, with plates of pancakes and a giant steaming french press. Or two. That’s pretty much what every Saturday looks like, so you know where to find us!

I am a simple woman who has a passion for the culinary arts. Ever since I was young I have loved food and it only increases as the years go on. Food is such a part of who I am. My mother potty trained me with m&m’s, my father recruited me for pancake duty on Saturday mornings and I remember watching my grandma’s cook dinner in the kitchen with wide-eyed fascination.
For over 15 years I have been creating delicious concoctions that have awakened taste buds and filled empty bellies. I cater everything, from charity events of 500 people to weddings of 400 to birthday parties, bridal showers and family holidays of 30 and finally to my own humble table of 4.
I take pride in the fact that everything that comes out of my kitchen is made from simple, natural ingredients. You will never find any added preservatives or components that you cannot pronounce embedded into my finished treats. You can rest assured that everything you sample from us is made with the utmost love but best of all, it's made freshly From Scratch!

Ally Meister is an amazing wife to her husband Drew whom she married after they met at California Baptist University in 2009. She is a caring mother to three beautiful children Nolan (5), Maylene (3) and Chase (1). Whether it is her family, friends or people that Ally has crossed paths with, she has an unbelievable impact in sharing God’s love and supporting them. In her home, Ally manages Nolan’s Type 1 Diabetes and Chase’s epilepsy, cerebral palsy and therapy needs. She has not retracted her faith in anger, but instead let it grow her to a new depth of love and understanding of Christ. God has blessed us with her and her knowledge of him, so I hope the opportunity to share her writing with you has the same impact it has on so many in her life.
Her story is humbling and powerful. Everyone can learn and take something from her journey.

Since 2011 Euphoric Herbals has helped families, friends, and sisters in lactation increase milk supply naturally. Founder, certified herbalist and certified breastfeeding counselor Cindy Collins developed her first blend after giving birth to her third son, then expanded the line with new blends, herbal teas and salves for the childbearing year. Though originally a means of healing for her community and doula clients, Cindy soon opened her online shop to help even more women along their journey to holistic health.
Since then, our products have served over 10,000 customers in 50 countries. That’s a lot of milk! And a lot of healthy, happy mamas and babies whose lives we are honored to have touched.
From conception until they reach your mailbox, every Euphoric Herbal item is handcrafted by Cindy and her super team of assistants. We create, package, label and ship each product off with lots of love and gratitude. At the end of each month, we donate $1 of every order to a charity that’s making a difference.
We believe a mother’s love can change the world—thanks to your support, we get to do our small part to help it along.

Sarah Noelle Schmidth is a graduate of Azusa Pacific University with emphasis in Psychology and Pastoral Counseling. She is a native Californian that currently resides in Salt Lake City, Utah with her husband and their new baby boy. She has a heart for helping women see their worth, bringing them together to embrace their differences, flaws and uniquenesses, helping each other through life, standing beside one another in solidarity, accepting and loving those deemed unacceptable and trying to understand the misunderstood. As a birth mother of two teenagers placed with the same couple in an open adoption, she empathizes with women who make the courageous sacrifice that is choosing placement for their children. She is also a writer, speaker and open adoption advocate, with her passions for people, healing and encouragement leading her to write and share her story through various platforms in hopes that others will not feel alone in their own journeys, but instead feel the grace, love and comfort that come from having a community of support rallying around each woman in need.

I’m Clarissa: a second-generation homeschooler, Orthodox Christian convert, writer, pie enthusiast, wife, and mother of five children. I’m learning what it means to both teach and grow in virtue through my humble attempt at classically educating my children (and honestly, myself); to raise a family that is centered in the liturgical life of the Church; and to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere of sweet, humble dailiness in our domestic monastery that both welcomes and sustains the souls that encounter it.
I’d be delighted if you would pull up a chair, grab a cup of tea, and join me by the fire!

Finally!
I started this podcast quickly and without a ton a planning, therefore I was late on releasing an "About Me" episode in the beginning!
In this episode Brandon Bernhard, my hubs, interviews me using the same questions I ask each momma.
Hope you enjoy!
