A funny, inspirational, REAL podcast that correlates with the weekly Come Follow Me curriculum of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The host, Melanie Stroud, shares her thoughts about the weekly lessons and gives REAL LIFE examples showing how we can apply the scriptures to our lives every day One mother wrote that her son said recently, "Melanie is a big fan of Heavenly Father - you can tell." That's the truth! She is! If you want to grow closer to the Savior and the scriptures and want some laughs along the way, this is the podcast for you!
In this episode, I talk about Joshua, courage, and what it means to step into the Jordan before the waters part. I share Jen's powerful conversion story and how her faith reminds all of us that we can do hard things when we know the gospel is true. I also talk about Jericho, keeping the commandments with exactness, and trusting that when the Lord asks us to keep walking, the walls really can come down.

This week I'm talking about Moses's warning in Deuteronomy: beware lest thou forget the Lord. As the Israelites prepared to enter the promised land, the danger wasn't just hardship — it was comfort. It was receiving blessings and then forgetting where they came from.
I share thoughts about putting the word of God in our hearts, letting the Lord soften and heal us, remembering His hand in our lives, and opening our hands wide to bless others. When we choose God, serve His children, and remember Him in both our wilderness and our promised lands, He helps us make it home.

This episode is about the whining and complaining Israelites. What's new? I loved in the intro how it said, "...the children of Israel needed, not to cover the geographical distance but to cover the spiritual distance: the distance between who they were and who the Lord needed them to become." So it is with us! If we stop complaining, we'll get to the land of milk and honey much faster and become who the Lord wants us to become.

Shelby Stroud is filling in for Melanie this week
Shelby talks about the tabernacle, sacrifice, repentance, and what it means to offer the Lord a broken heart and a contrite spirit. With stories about fake pearls, seminary whiteboards, Sunday homework, and the unique gifts God gives each of us, she points us back to Jesus Christ — our High Priest, our scapegoat, and the One who makes us holy.

In this episode, I'm talking about Jesus Christ as our Advocate — not just someday at judgment, but right now, in the middle of our messy, mortal lives. I share what I learned while studying the word advocate, how the Holy Ghost helps bring Christ's advocacy into our hearts, and why staying close to the Spirit matters so much. I also share a personal scripture moment from 2 Corinthians 8 that reminded me the Lord accepts what we can offer, not what we can't. Christ is beside us, cheering for us, pleading for us, strengthening us, and helping us come home.

In this episode, I talk about what it has meant to me to know Jesus Christ as the Prince of Peace. I share personal experiences, from family struggles to fear and anger, and how I've learned that peace doesn't come from fixing everything around me, but from turning to Jesus and letting Him change what's happening inside my heart.
Using the story of the Savior calming the storm, I ask: How long do we stay in the storm before we go to Him? I've learned that peace isn't something I can create on my own—it's something Christ is already offering, if I'm willing to ask.
This episode is a reminder to me (and to you) that the price of peace is righteousness, and that when I finally say, "Can you take this?"—He does.

Melanie is back and launching a new season centered on the names of Jesus Christ. In this opening episode, she shares why she felt prompted to return, reflects on the armor of God—especially the helmet of salvation—and talks about the need to protect our thoughts, strengthen our faith, and seek the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost. She also invites listeners to join her in preparing spiritually, studying Christ more deeply, and building their own "ark" before the storms come.

In this episode, I dive into the Articles of Faith and Official Declarations 1 and 2 and talk about what they teach us about revelation, change, and trusting living prophets. I share how the scriptures, especially the Book of Mormon, help us sort truth from noise, why repentance and faith in Christ are so central, and how we can honor others' right to worship while holding fast to our own beliefs. In the end, I come back to Nephi's "nevertheless": we don't know the meaning of all things, but we do know that God loves His children—and that truth is enough to keep us on the covenant path.

This episode is about Joseph Smith. This episode includes testimonies from many different people.
From the manual:
The afternoon of June 27, 1844, found Joseph and Hyrum Smith in jail once again, accompanied by John Taylor and Willard Richards. They believed they were innocent of any crime, but they submitted to arrest, hoping to prevent violence against the Saints in Nauvoo. This wasn't the first time that enemies of the Church had put the Prophet Joseph in prison, but this time he seemed to know that he would not return alive. He and his friends tried to comfort each other by reading from the Book of Mormon and singing hymns. Then gunshots were heard, and within a few minutes the mortal lives of Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum had come to an end.
And yet it was not the end of the divine cause they had embraced. And it was not the end of the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ. There was more work to do and more revelation that would guide the Church forward. Killing the Prophet could not kill the work of God.
Please also watch this, I forgot to mention it on the podcast but it's one of my all time favorite talks about the Prophet Joseph Smith. It's called, "Safety for the Soul" by Jeffrey R Holland.

Episode 43 Doctrine and Covenants 133–134 – "Prepare Ye for the Coming of the Bridegroom" In this week's episode covering Doctrine and Covenants 133–134, I talk about preparing for the coming of the Bridegroom—fleeing Babylon, building Zion, and finding joy in doing God's work. From threshing wheat to sharing the gospel on an airplane, this episode reminds us that even the weak can do great things with God's help.

This week, I'm in Doctrine & Covenants 129–132, discussing how blessings from God come through obedience. I share some real-life chaos, then dive into family history, temple work, and powerful stories about ancestors and eternal families—and how all of it brings us hope, help, and joy.

I'm in Doctrine and Covenants 124—"A House unto My Name." I recap the Saints' move to Nauvoo, why the Lord urgently needed a temple, and how faithful discipleship (taking counsel, staying humble, keeping the Spirit) helps us endure. I talk about being doers of the word, not hearers only; welcoming strangers like the people of Quincy did; and practical ways to serve—yes, including finding refugee and local needs on JustServe.org. I also touch on Nauvoo ordinances, baptisms for the dead, and making temple work part of daily discipleship. At the end, I invite you to pray about one specific thing you'll do this week—and then go do it.

In this episode, I dive into Doctrine and Covenants 115–120 and talk about what it really means when the Lord says, "His sacrifice shall be more sacred unto me than his increase."
I share stories from early Church history—like Saints who gave up everything for their faith—and what we can learn from their examples today. I talk about obedience, tithing, staying loyal to the Prophet, and how the Lord sees and honors our efforts, even when we fall.
This one is about faith, sacrifice, and choosing to shine on—even when it's hard.
In D&C 111–114, I talk about how the Lord truly “orders all things for our good,” even when life feels messy or distracting. I share what I learned from Thomas B. Marsh’s story—how quickly we can lose the Spirit through pride or anger, and how repentance brings us back. I also share personal experiences where the Lord provided for me in simple, miraculous ways, reminding me that He’s always aware of us. This episode is about trusting God, keeping the Holy Ghost close, and strengthening our testimonies every single day.

In this episode, I share lessons from Zion’s Camp in Doctrine and Covenants 103–105 and how they apply to our lives today. We talk about trials of faith, unity, and the need to be spiritually prepared through temple covenants. I also reflect on my own struggles with starting new projects, the importance of sharing the gospel in everyday moments, and Elder Bednar’s reminder to ask: Who’s on the Lord’s side?
In this week’s study of Doctrine & Covenants 102–105 (“After much tribulation cometh the blessings”), I walk through why the first high council was organized and the loving purpose of membership councils, then trace Zion’s Camp and what it taught the Saints—and us—about obedience, timing, and building Zion through righteousness. I share stories like Reddick Allred’s steady faith and 22-year-old Nathan Baldwin’s instant obedience, plus a modern example of following prophetic counsel even when it’s hard. My personal takeaway: I want to be the one who turns west the moment the Spirit whispers. Also…watch for my new joy project (on YouTube!)—I’m finally acting on that nudge.

In this episode covering Doctrine and Covenants 94–97, I talk about how the Lord gives us patterns—whether in building temples or in building our lives—and how following His plan brings blessings we can’t find in the world’s way of doing things. I share a listener’s touching review about the power of the Book of Mormon, insights on the Lord being in the details, and lessons from Joseph Smith’s insistence on building the Lord’s house His way. We discuss chastening as a sign of God’s love, Hyrum Smith’s eagerness to begin the Lord’s work, and how temples and Zion invite us to become pure in heart. Most of all, this episode reminds us that the Lord wants to refine, bless, and multiply us when we humbly follow Him.

This week I’m diving into Doctrine and Covenants 93—“Receive of His Fulness.” I talk about Elder Renlund’s message on “Infuriating Unfairness” and the importance of being stone-catchers instead of stone-throwers, share some powerful listener stories about following the prophet, and explore how we grow grace by grace, just like the Savior did. We’ll look at what it means to climb the ladder of exaltation one step at a time, how light and truth fill our lives as we keep the commandments, and why setting our own homes in order really matters. I hope this episode reminds you that you are a child of God with divine potential and that little by little, you can receive of His fulness.
From the manual:
“When you climb up a ladder,” Joseph Smith taught, “you must begin at the bottom, and ascend step by step, until you arrive at the top; and so it is with the principles of the gospel—you must begin with the first, and go on until you learn all the principles of exaltation” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith [2007], 268).
Sometimes that ladder of exaltation seems impossibly high , but we were born to climb to the top. Whatever limitations we may see in ourselves, Heavenly Father and His Son see something glorious in us, something godlike. Just as Jesus Christ “was in the beginning with the Father,” so “ye were also” (Doctrine and Covenants 93:21, 23). Just as He “continued from grace to grace, until he received a fulness,” so also “you shall receive grace for grace” (verses 13, 20). The restored gospel teaches us about the true nature of God, and so it also teaches us about ourselves and what we can become. Despite the efforts of the “wicked one” (verse 39)—and despite what you feel you may lack—you are a literal child of God with the potential to “in due time receive of his fulness” (verse 19).

In this episode, I continue with Doctrine & Covenants 88 and move into sections 89–92, “A Principle with a Promise.” I share the wrestle I had over releasing this episode that talks about the vaccine, why I ultimately felt impressed to publish it, and how it ties into following the prophet and learning by faith. We’ll look at what it means to submit our will to God, seek answers in the scriptures, and embrace the Word of Wisdom as both temporal counsel and spiritual promise.
“… the submission of one’s will is really the only uniquely personal thing we have to place on God’s altar. The many other things we “give,” brothers and sisters, are actually the things He has already given or loaned to us. However, when you and I finally submit ourselves, by letting our individual wills be swallowed up in God’s will, then we are really giving something to Him! It is the only possession which is truly ours to give!”

In this episode, I dive into Doctrine and Covenants 88, an amazing revelation about light, glory, and the peace Christ offers us, even when life feels hard. I share how this section came in the middle of challenges for the early Saints and how it teaches us to seek God’s will, not just our own. We’ll talk about what it means to be sanctified, why consolation is just as much a gift as joy, and how the story of the brother of Jared shows the importance of doing our part before asking for miracles. Along the way, I share personal experiences, tender mercies, and lessons the Lord has been teaching me about trust, preparation, and finding light in dark places.

This episode is about journals, how the spirit feels and how it testifies to us, and about standing in holy places.
From the manual:
Christmas Day is usually a time to ponder messages like “peace on earth” and “good will toward men” (see Luke 2:14). But on December 25, 1832, Joseph Smith’s mind was occupied with the threat of war. South Carolina had just defied the United States government and was preparing for battle. And the Lord revealed to Joseph that this was only the beginning: “War,” He declared, “will be poured out upon all nations” (Doctrine and Covenants 87:2). It seemed like this prophecy would be fulfilled very soon.
But then it wasn’t. Within just a few weeks, South Carolina and the U.S. government reached a compromise, and war was averted. But revelation is not always fulfilled at the time or in the way we expect. Nearly 30 years later, long after Joseph S mith was martyred and the Saints had moved west, South Carolina did rebel and civil war followed. Since then, war throughout the world has caused “the earth [to] mourn” (Doctrine and Covenants 87:6). While the prophecy was ultimately fulfilled, the value of this revelation is less in predicting when calamity will come and more in teaching what to do when it does. The counsel is the same in 1831, 1861, and 2021: “Stand ye in holy places, and be not moved” (verse 8).

In this episode, I discuss Doctrine and Covenants 3–5, focusing on Joseph Smith’s early struggles with Martin Harris and the lost 116 pages. We explore how trusting God above all else, daily scripture study, and sincere repentance allow us to move forward, even when we’ve made mistakes. We also discuss the role of personal revelation in gaining a testimony and the Lord’s merciful way of teaching and correcting us.

This episode is about Joseph Smith, his interactions with the Angel Moroni, and his first trip to get the plates. It also talks about Doctrine and Covenants Section 2 - and the sealing power that the prophet Elijah returned to the earth.
These are such miraculous stories, and maybe because we’ve heard them so often, we no longer marvel at just how amazing the restoration actually was! It answered so many questions and filled in so many holes. We are so lucky to know about it.

This episode contains two parts. The first 25 minutes are thoughts on this week’s lesson. The second half is part of Season 1, Episode 3, about the Christmas Nativity. I thought it might be nice to play it with your family as you get out your nativity this year. The prophet has asked us to try to find ways the Lord speaks to us. This little part of the lesson may just help you find the way he talks to you.

This is the second half of last week's lesson. It's pretty on forgiveness. Maybe that's a good thing to think about this Holiday season. What gift can you give the Savior? Forgive.

This Episode includes my quick thoughts on Jonah and TWO repeat Episodes from Season 1 about giving. Such good things to listen to this holiday season. Happy Thanksgiving!!
This episode talks about these two prophets, Amos and Obadiah. They were just regular guys that were called to do and say some hard things. They warned us to seek the Lord and to be careful not to get to "at ease" in our lives. Obadiah added that we should go to temples for our dead and be their "Saviors on Mount Zion."
This Episode is about Hosea and how the Lord compares all of us to Gomer. The Lord loves us and wants to extend mercy to every single one of us! Don't ever forget that!

This episode is about the whining and complaining Israelites. What's new? I loved in the intro how it said, "...the children of Israel needed, not to cover the geographical distance but to cover the spiritual distance: the distance between who they were and who the Lord needed them to become." So it is with us! If we stop complaining - we'll get to the land of milk and honey much faster and become who the Lord wants us to become.

Episode Notes (click here to go to the website for more information about this episode)
This episode correlates with the week of January 14-20 in the Come Follow Me manual. "We Have Come to Worship Him." In this podcast, I ramble on about all the great things that have happened this last week and talk more in-depth about the Christmas story and nativity from Luke 2 and Matthew 2. I talk about all the different people who took part in that miraculous event and share a little tidbit I learned about swaddling clothes. I reference a talk by Marvin J. Ashton. I discuss different ways that people feel the spirit and then talk about how to help protect our families. I also make fun of my brother for not being able to exaggerate and throw my aunts under the bus for leaving me at the airport when I was 5.
This podcast correlates with Lesson 2 in the Come Follow Me manual. In this podcast, I talk about what to do while we are waiting for blessings from the Lord. I interview my beautiful friend Dawn about her current situation with her son who had a brain tumor removed last May and how her family has been dealing with that situation. It's so touching! (You should probably just stop after her ... )
I also talk about Mary and Joseph and their examples and give a short story from my family history. You can find the manual here if you want to follow along. correlatesFollow Me manual
This is the first episode of Come Follow Me for Us by Melanie Wellman. These podcasts will correlate with the lessons in the Come Follow Me, New Testament 2019 manual of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Disclaimer * I am no expert. This is not an official podcast from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I'm just a girl who really loves the scriptures, my Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.
When this new program was announced, we were all high fives and cheers. (Mainly because church dropped down to 2 hours!) But now that it's time to start this new program, many of us are all still not sure what we are doing. I thought I'd give my thoughts every Monday morning so that we all would have some things to think about during the week and maybe my thoughts might help you, in some way, incorporate this new program into your life.
Isn't it awesome that the Lord trusts us enough to hand this teaching over to us? It's like Christ is telling us, "You've got this! You have what it takes to teach your family, friends and yourself how to come unto Me and become more deeply converted to my gospel."
Therefore, we need to be worthy of this trust by figuring out a way to really use Come Follow Me to do just that - bring us closer to Christ.
This episode talks about how we are responsible for our own learning. We are taught to examine what we are seeking for and what we want to get out of this year. I discuss Matthew 19 about the rich man who asks what he lacks and how that parable applies to our lives. I talk about humility and how sometimes it's really hard to ask the Lord what we lack and then be humble enough to see it and then desire to change.
I discuss the scriptures in Matthew 6 about forgiveness and talk more about how important it is to learn to truly forgive. I quote two talks by Jeffrey R Holland "Be Ye Therefore Perfect Eventually" and "The Ministry of Reconciliation"
I quoted a Christian author I love named Chrystal Evans Hurst's book She's Still There, Rescuing the Girl Inside You. She talks about our obligation to act upon the things we learn in the scriptures. DO what we learn. It's a great read. She's very inspiring. In that section of the podcast, I talk about the importance of not just hearing the word of God - but really trying to incorporate His word into our lives.
I also talk about whining in the MTC, a dead deer in a stream, having the devil in me before church, fighting Satan UFC style and how to bribe your kids to read scriptures with candy and back scratches.
I hope it helps someone. It helped me to record it.
Shine on friends.
