Dr. Cornblatt’s background in medicine and nutraceutical development has shaped his perspectives on modern medicine and the US’s approach to healthcare as a whole. While in medical school at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Cornblatt began identifying overlapping factors in cancer cases in his region that seemed to be overlooked, including physical environment, diet, and lifestyle. This sparked his commitment to asking the questions that healthcare professionals should ask their patients.

This has led him to his current role as the Chief Medical Officer for BioHarvest Sciences and co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of International Nutrition Associates (INA). BioHarvest Sciences is the first and only fully validated industrial-scale plant cell technology platform for the production of plant metabolites.

He joins us to talk about the challenge of sourcing raw, organic ingredients, why the first question you get asked when you take your pet to the vet is "What do they eat?" but why human doctors don't ask that, and more about the science and ethics behind BioHarvest Sciences.

I don't know about you, but my social media has been FILLED with programs and products promoting sobriety from drinking.

Fresh off of Dry January, sobriety and the sober curious movement have been in the mainstream for months now, encouraging people to abstain from, or at least re-evaluate their relationships with alcohol.

That idea is at the heart of our guest's mission. #BingingSober was started by Colleen Ryan-Hensley, a 10-year Navy Veteran. advocate for mental health and expert in mental toughness.

Colleen struggled with depression since she was a teenager and instead of expressing her feelings and getting help, she was taught to "rub some dirt on it and get back in the game". To cope with depression, she started drinking and going on long runs to escape the things that hurt.

When she joined the Navy, she brought this mental and physical toughness with her. Sure, it was the perfect combo for being a great sailor, but not so great for relationships, health and overall well-being. It wasn't until well after her Navy days that she started focusing more on the feelings she kept bottled up and peeling away the decades of toughness she had built up around her.

Today, Colleen shows others how to avoid making these costly decisions and live a balanced life where escape and reality can live in harmony.

How is medicinal marijuana manufactured?
In the changing landscape of cannabis legality, the growth of marijuana has become more industrialized.

There are over 100 different active chemical properties present in the cannabis plant. THC is the psychoactive chemical that can get people high. CBD is the chemical that can do wonders for physical conditions. Different parts of the plants are used for different conditions.

Facilities for marijuana manufacture are regulated by restrictive ordinances so cannabis isn’t grown on every street corner. Cannabis efficiency experts control quality and test for pollutants and pests. Growing cannabis isn’t the same as growing food, so cultivation conditions must be precise.

Listen to this encore episode from 02/06/2018 as Bob Selan joins Dr. Holly Lucille to discuss the manufacture of medicinal marijuana.

The temperature of your bed can be the difference between a restful night and a fitful one. From an evolutionary perspective, we’re working against ourselves when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep.

We’ve been disrupting our circadian rhythm by striving towards achieving homeostasis with air conditioning, heating, and artificial lighting. The natural sleep triggers such as the gradual darkening and cooling of our environment are gone, and we’re not sleeping as well as we should.

To get the best night’s sleep our bodies need a cool environment. But with memory foam mattresses and heavy blankets, heat is trapped in our beds regardless of the room’s temperature.

Dr. Roger Hall, author of Staying Happy Being Productive, shares tips for easing some of the irrational fears and worries impacting us during the pandemic. Our brains are designed to keep us alive. Fear is that mechanism.

The problem is worry, which is anticipatory fear. That is occurring in rampant form during the COVID-19 pandemic. People are trying to offset some of the uncertainty by attempting to gain control -- manifested in actions like buying excessive amounts of toilet paper.

Dr. Roger Hall, author of Staying Happy Being Productive, joins Dr. Holly to share tips for easing some of the irrational fears and worries impacting us during the pandemic.

  • Media Diet: I’m not telling you to stop using the media, but I am encouraging you to limit the amounts and times of day that you access it.
  • Screen your sources of information: If the source has a financial interest in bad news, then be wary of the accuracy of the information. If you can’t find a resource who is impartial, make sure you get multiple views, opposing views on the problem.
  • Sleep, exercise, good nutrition, faith, and a long-term perspective: these are some basic resources for people to cope with adversity.

You know you need to make a change but your attempts are met with failure. Are you sabotaging yourself? You know you need to make a change but your attempts are met with failure. Are you sabotaging yourself?

There are many resources available at your fingertips to help you achieve your goals.

You probably have a good idea of what you should be doing. You also likely have an idea of what you shouldn’t be doing.

But, you’re not making things happen for yourself. What gives?

You have to get out of your own way. Self sabotage is the drive toward negative things. You have to come to terms with that knowledge in order to overcome it.

While there are conscious things you’re doing to sabotage yourself, some acts are happening on an unconscious level. You don’t recognize those factors until after the fact.

Develop self awareness. Know that you want it. Notice what drives you toward negative behavior and away from your goals. You have to be aware of it to gain control over it. See if your behavior consistently leads to negative results.

Ending Self Sabotage

First, stop being frustrated with yourself. Don’t ask why you keep doing this. There’s no reason to marvel at it like it’s a surprise that you’re sabotaging yourself. To solve the problem of self sabotage, just look at what you’re doing.

Second, recognize you’re doing it. Find the part of yourself that wants to move toward the pro-survival goal.

Finally, work through the sabotaging behavior. Once you recognize what you do, it’s easier to spot.

Listen as Mike Bundrant joins Dr. Holly Lucille to help you end your self sabotage.

Learn how to become a mindful investor.Money, financial planning, and investing can be a huge source of stress for Americans. However it doesn’t need to be.

Financial analyst, Manny Weintraub, explains investing in plain English and helps his clients bring mindfulness into the investing process.

He encourages people to think about money the way you’d think about food. You may not understand the science behind it, but you can learn how to make good choices. You also need to find a partner you trust to offer advice that is in your best interests. You wouldn't take diet tips from the processed foods industry, right?

He shares tips on how to create a portfolio that is consistent with your values and eliminate stress from investing with his seven rules of mindful investing, which include:

  1. Any mindfulness practice is better than no mindfulness practice.
  2. If you don’t know what you’re trying to accomplish, you won’t achieve it.
  3. Your time horizon and the time horizon of your financial advisor can be different, so it’s important to look after your own interests.
  4. You don’t need to be first to invest in a new trend.
  5. There were no “good ole days.”
  6. The only constant is change.
  7. Avoid the fear industry.

Find out which popular diets can actually harm your heart. The current population in the United States is the first society in history that is simultaneously overweight and malnourished.

Back in the 70s, obesity skyrocketed because organizations like the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology promoted low-fat diets and low-fat foods that replaced fats with sugar and processed carbohydrates.

We often hear that low-fat diets, low cholesterol diets, and veganism can help you lose weight and get healthy. However, these diets are often bad for your heart. Humans need good HDL cholesterol, healthy fats, and certain vitamins found in animal products like B12 and D in order to function. By skipping these food groups, you’re actually more prone to heart disease and obesity.

Listen as cardiologist Barbara Hudson Roberts joins Dr. Holly Lucille to discuss diets and heart health.

Learn how music can be used as a form of therapy to find clarity and calmness.Much like we need to go to the gym and eat well to maintain healthy bodies, we need to work on keeping our minds healthy through mindful practices.

Because we’re living in a more fast-paced, secular society than ever before, we lack rituals that are focused on the mind and soul. But, by creating rituals that revolve around music, we can become more mindful and find clarity.

Mindful musician Murray Hidary has created Mind Travel, live music performances -- often out in nature -- that allow listeners to shift their perception of time and get lost in a slow, contemplative state. The music is meant to relax listeners and create a sense of community. When concert goers listen to music together, their brain waves operate on the same frequency, bringing audience members together for a shared experience.

Vitamin B12 helps keep your nervous system and blood cells healthy. Low B12 causes symptoms right away. Tingling of fingers and toes, fatigue, anxiety and depression are common.

Your B12 level may check out on your lab tests. That doesn’t prove that your cells are absorbing the vitamin. It’s a good idea to take a B12 supplement. It’s water soluble so your body can easily eliminate any excess.

Your gut health may need to be improved in order to break down B12 in your digestive tract. A sublingual tablet absorbs directly into your body.

Six Facts About Vitamin B12 Deficiency
1. There aren’t many natural B12-rich foods. 2. Vegetarians and vegans are at greater risk for B12 deficiency. 3. Your body doesn’t store B12 for long. 4. Learn how to tell if you're a food addict and how to start on the road to recovery.Much like alcoholism and drug use, food addiction is a very serious disease. It's an obsession with food and weight and occurs when someone loses control over how much and what they eat. It’s a lifetime chronic illness that only gets worse if left untreated.

Many food addicts struggle with foods high in sugar and flour, with pizza, ice cream, and chocolate topping the list of addictive foods.

When it comes to symptoms, most food addicts:

  • Are obsessed with food
  • Have dug food out of the garbage
  • Hide food
  • Lie about food and eating habits
  • Eat in isolation
  • Eat when they’re not hungry
  • Think about food and weight all the time
  • Want to stop eating but can’t
  • Exercise, vomit, or use laxatives to control weight

For those struggling with food addiction, Jennifer Alembik, a Food Addiction Coach and recovering food addict, recommends staying away from foods that come in bags, boxes and cans. If you know which foods are the most triggering, she advises permanently cutting those foods out of your diet. Much like alcoholism, moderation does not exist with food addicts.

She also recommends keeping a food journal, establishing and committing to morning and nighttime routines, and identifying triggers and finding new ways to cope when triggered.

The lifestyle choices you make throughout your life will affect the aging process and your likelihood of developing chronic illnesses.More than 60 percent of Americans have one chronic disease and 40 percent have two or more chronic diseases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention claims that most of these diseases are preventable and reversible in the early stages by making simple lifestyle changes.

To avoid chronic disease later in life, it’s essential to make healthy choices early on and continue to make them as you age. Some people believe that after 50 their health is going downhill, so they stop making healthy choices.

Dr. Sally LaMont notes that we have more control over our health than most people imagine. She shares how to listen to your body and adjust choices rather than taking medicine to cover up the signs that your body is struggling.

  • Digestive dysfunction

Anxiety is not a diagnosis, but rather a measure of your body’s stress chemicals.Chronic pain and anxiety are not diagnoses, but rather symptoms of stress.

When you feel physically or mentally threatened, your body produces stress chemicals to increase your chances of survival. When your stress levels remain elevated for extended periods of time, the result is anxiety.

Long periods of stress and anxiety can result in chronic pain and discomfort that can include chronic ringing in your ears, back pain, insomnia, migraines, and foot pain. However, using pharmaceuticals to treat the pain will be ineffective; you need to fix the anxiety that’s causing it.

Dr. David Hanscom shares his story of working through his anxiety to relieve chronic pain. He offers up tools that reduce stress chemicals and rid the body of the physical symptoms of stress. By using mindfulness and meditation, you can work through the three steps of overcoming anxiety: awareness, separation, and redirection.

Realigning your posture may reduce chronic pain and improve your health.Posture is the interpretation of external sensory stimuli on the body’s musculature.

Your body can misinterpret stimuli and create faulty motor skills. This generates bad posture and can cause chronic pain. Excessive stress and compression affects your joints, organ function and general health.

Childhood Influence
Not all women have pelvic bones that are well-aligned. This leads to difficulty in the delivery room, which can cause misalignment in babies.

It’s best to let your child improve sensory input by allowing freedom of mobility. Avoid putting him in shoes (when possible) until the age of three.

Recognizing Poor Posture
If you’ve seen more than one professional for back, joint or neck pain, your posture needs improvement. Head tilting is another compensation for bad posture. Your shoes or pants may not wear out evenly, indicating you may have a postural disequilibrium.

Fixing Your Posture
Repetitive motion like walking is built on movement patterns. Your body is used to moving this way, and your brain needs to be retrained. Constant stimulation over a period of time can change faulty motor patterns. Exercises to create new motor habits can be done in just minutes a day.

Listen as posture expert Annette Verpillot joins Dr. Holly Lucille to discuss how your posture (and overall health) can be improved.

She reminds us that our plate is a reflection of our inner state. We need to change our thoughts and beliefs that drive our behavior, instead of getting caught in the diet chaos.

Listen as Carly joins Dr. Holly Lucille to discuss how to redefine the word diet and find lasting solutions to eating healthy.

How can you reduce your exposure to toxins? The average person encounters environmental toxins in every day life. It’s impossible to completely avoid them.

Our bodies are enzyme machines. We need vitamins and minerals for the enzymes to work properly. The nutritional quality of our food supply has decreased in the past 50 years due to modern agricultural procedures. Toxins poison the body’s enzymes so they don’t function properly.

There is a correlation between chronic illnesses and toxin exposure. The majority of the population has been exposed to enough toxins to double the chance for disease.

Seventy percent of our toxic load comes from food. Some toxins come from the food production process. Other toxins come from the packaging process.

Consider how toxins can accumulate in your body over time. Try to reduce your toxic exposure. Stick with organic foods and grow as much food as you can. Look for foods packaged in glass. Avoid fragrances in health and beauty aids.

Listen as Dr. Joe Pizzorno joins Dr. Holly Lucille to discuss environmental toxins.

Rosemary Lombardy shares her experience with marital abuse and tactics she used to break bad habits, find self-worth and replace every bad habit with a good one.

Listen as Rosemary joins Dr. Holly Lucille to discuss breaking bad habits with mindfulness.
