Welcome to this very special edition of HealthLinks Podcast. For the past few months, I've been intensely curious about how inmates in the South Carolina Prison System receive care, especially during a pandemic. It's just not something we ever really think about, but it's actually quite important. 85% of inmates are back in the community within 5 year. Like much of the conversation around healthcare, this highlights how connected we all are, even if you can't fathom how your health is connected to someone in prison.

This 2-part interview begins with Dr. Ed O'Bryan of MUSC, who has worked with the prison healthcare system for over a decade. He has been dedicated to the push by the state to evolve beyond "just good enough" to a focus on quality healthcare in the prison system.

We talk about the new push to offer better telehealth services, coronavirus, mental health, even the damaging effects on families of imprisoning people for low level offenses. Thank you, Dr. O'Bryan for sharing your time and perspective.

School is, well...not in full swing, but it's happening. Some virtually, some in person, and all quite different than what we're used to.

If you have kids, this episode is a great resource for navigating the complexity of being a parent right now.

My guest today is Betsy McMillan, who has over 25 years of experience as a Child Life Specialist at Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina.

She shared tons of great insight into communicating with children during challenging situations like hospitalizations, trauma, and of course the current pandemic.

We discuss the importance of creating structure, and allowing them to be kids in an environment that seems to be forcing children to grow up way too fast.

I learned a lot, and I'll be putting her wisdom to use with my own kids. I hope you'll do the same. Thank you for listening.

Topics include:

  • How to talk to your child about difficult situations (surgeries, hospitalizations, the pandemic, etc.) without being condescending or talking down to them.
  • Developing a stronger bond with your child through communication and mutual understanding.
  • Creating an environment of trust.
  • How to notice the signs that your child is dealing with something difficult by observing how they play.
  • The importance of giving your child some sense of normalcy, choice, and control in their lives.
  • Why you shouldn't talk your child out of their feelings and encourage them to mask what's happening within.

Doctors all over the world are stepping up to lead, creating programs to serve those who need it most.

"The directive to ‘fend for yourselves’ in obtaining adequate PPE has come down from the top of government. As Federal and State agencies and hospital systems are given priority and vie for the same supplies, individual DOCTORS and our practices have been left behind. In a pre-COVID newsletter I wrote about the importance of ‘collective activism’ in pursuit of common legislative priorities.

I am proud of how we, as DOCTORS, regardless of place of employment or type of practice have collectively mobilized to help ourselves, our practices and our patients. CCMS set the stage, and by including all the Doctors of South Carolina, has created a way forward to sustain us over the coming months. From the initial idea to the membership survey to the ‘live launch’ of the PPE PROJECT URGENT BULLETIN took a remarkable 10 days. In a future UPDATE we will share
details of who, how, where and when this came about. The WHY is painfully obvious.

As of today, we have been able to order 295,040 units of respirators, masks and gowns. We hope to add shields and gloves soon. Our PPE is being fabricated as you read this and will be shipped via air cargo to the distribution sites within the next 10-14 days. We are all anxious to receive our orders; we will keep you posted daily.

I believe that on the other side of this crisis many good things will come to DOCTORS and our patients. For now, know that collectively we can do things that individually we cannot."

CCMS is working hard for you.

Dr. Thaddeus John Bell has dedicated his life to overcoming the health disparities present in the African American community. Although his story begins well before the day he was arrested alongside 700 others protesting for civil rights in Orangeburg, SC, we begin the conversation here, as it was a turning point that ultimately led to him becoming one of the first black teachers in South Carolina as well as one of the first black students accepted to MUSC.

These accomplishments were milestones on the path to creating "Closing the Gap in Health Care" a nonprofit he founded in 2005. He was recognized by the National Medial Association in 2013, received the lifetime achievement award from the Charleston County Medical Society, and in 2019 was honored by having the newly opened family health center in Summerville, SC named after him.

Our in-depth conversation gives a unique look into the history of South Carolina. Much of what Dr. Bell shares is not in history books, highlighting the importance of sharing the legacies of those who paved the way.

Dr. Bell shares weekly health tips via newsletter, YouTube, and other media channels. To connect with him and learn more about Closing the Gap in Health Care, visit www.closingthegapinhealthcare.org
