Digital accessibility is often treated as a compliance checkbox—but in reality, it's a complex, evolving discipline with direct implications for risk, customer experience, and operational efficiency. In this episode, a Product Manager and Accessibility Compliance lead at Cytric Easy at Amadeus IT Group (Nick Hebrant) breaks down what accessibility actually means in practice. The conversation demystifies WCAG 2.1 accessibility guidelines, clarifying that they are not rigid standards but guidelines—introducing interpretation, subjectivity, and inconsistency across organizations and regions.

Key insights include:

  • Why most accessibility issues are invisible and rooted in underlying code
  • The absence of standardized scoring, and what VPAT/ACR reports really represent
  • The operational and global complexity of managing accessibility across platforms
  • Common pitfalls, including misaligned audits and lack of product context

For Travel Managers (conversation led by Cristina Chimenti), the takeaway is clear: your role isn't to solve accessibility technically, but to manage the conversation strategically. By understanding on vendor mindset, structured progress, and informed questioning, organizations can move beyond focusing on compliance as an end goal.

Accessibility isn't a finish line—it's an ongoing journey that separates reactive organizations from resilient ones.

Consumer Electronics Show executive shares trends, lessons and advice from CES 2021 and 2022.

Everyone across the business travel industry is now talking about continued, and hopefully accelerated, recovery as we move through the pandemic. Meetings, events and conferences are a critical part of our industry. But they are also areas that have been significantly impacted by the pandemic, essentially putting the brakes on in-person gatherings and especially larger ones.  So how has this sector been navigating so far and how are they getting ready for what’s next?

To provide some insight, our guest today is Kara Dickerson, VP of Strategic Relationships and Conferences for the Consumer Technology Association or (CTA).  CTA owns and operates the Consumer Electronics Show, or (CES), one of the largest annual trade shows in the world. In 2021, due to the pandemic, CES was held as an all-digital event. But in 2022, CES returned to its home in Las Vegas and welcomed more than 40,000 attendees from over 119 countries.

In this episode, Dickerson explains some overarching trends in the large meetings and events space, what went in to returning to in-person events, lessons learned and valuable advice for organizations as they start to get back into hosting larger events and conferences.

Kara Dickerson is a technology and brand executive, bringing 20+ years of executive management experience to her role as Vice President, Strategic Partnerships and Conferences for the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), the U.S. trade association representing more than 2,200 consumer technology companies, which owns and produces CES® – The Global Stage for Innovation.

Dickerson is the lead content strategist for CES, where she directs the strategy of the thought leadership program for the world’s most influential technology event. She is responsible for the globally renowned CES keynote stage which attracts visionary speakers and innovators from around the world, engaging Fortune 500 CEOs from brands like Accenture, Ford, General Motors, IBM, Fortune, Intel, LinkedIn, Mastercard, Mercedes-Benz, Microsoft, NBCUniversal, Netflix, Salesforce, Samsung, Twitter, Under Armour, Verizon, Warner Media, and U.S. Cabinet Officials. In addition to the CES conference, Dickerson oversees a year-round portfolio of events that bring together the global technology community, connecting and engaging innovators that are using technology to solve global challenges.

On episode 2 of this 4-part series we shift to another industry that was an early adopter in the return to travel after the COVID-19 lockdowns, Film & Television. Hosts Amy Thiessen and Greg Bell chat with Sony Pictures executives, Steven Kent and Pamela Aberg, once again getting two very different yet unifying perspectives. Pamela sits on the travel management side of the business and Steve is the ultimate road warrior having amassed over 11 million airline miles. We continue to learn that the value of relationships, attention to detail, and honesty & transparency are more important than ever in our ever-changing global travel industry. With some entertaining stories along the way…

Steve Kent, originally from Pound Ridge, NY, joined Sony Pictures in 1995 and never left. Early in his career he served as vice president of production for then Columbia TriStar Television, working on series such as Dawson’s Creek and Early Edition. Before joining Sony Pictures Television, he spent nine years as supervising producer for the popular soap opera Santa Barbara, garnering three Emmy Awards for his work. He currently oversees international productions such as Outlander (Scotland), Fantasy Island (Puerto Rico), and Wheel of Time (Prague).

Pamela Aberg is a native of Los Angeles (North Hollywood) and started working in the travel industry at the tender age of 15 as a part time, after school job. She started working for Sony Pictures Travel in 1990 as a corporate agent - around the same time that Sony had purchased Columbia and TriStar Pictures. Her work experience at SPE Travel has covered virtually all facets of travel - from corporate, production and publicity. Pamela now Co-Directs SPE travel and has been instrumental in the growth and development of SPE’s highly effective in-house Travel program.

Not many could have predicted at the beginning of COVID-19 what would lie ahead.  GBTA started its monthly COVID-19 poll in February 2020, just as the earliest hints of the pandemic were appearing. We didn’t have a crystal ball, but we did recognize the importance of keeping a pulse on the new development and potential implications for our members and business travel overall.

And what started as one of the first COVID-19 polls, has now become an important benchmark for our industry as well as for corporations, policymakers, trade associations, government agencies, media and more. Today, GBTA has become a reliable, go-to source for insights related to COVID-19 and business travel’s return and recovery around the globe.

And we’re unpacking our July poll results in our newest episode of “The Business of Travel,” the official podcast series of GBTA. Tune in here as Chris Ely, head of Research for GBTA, shares more on the poll takeaways, backstory and benefits in conversation with Debbie Iannaci, GBTA’s head of Communications.

Results from this 21st poll in our series continue to track ongoing sentiment as well as new developments. Is business travel really returning? How are travel companies feeling about recovery? Do business travelers really want to hit the road again? How have vaccinations played into the recovery equation?

Our August poll is currently underway and will be open until August 19. Results will be published on August 26.  We thank all of you who continue to take the time to offer your input.

The inaugural National Business Traveler Day took place this Wednesday, April 24th. Upside Business Travel led this initiative celebrating business travelers as the unspoken heroes of the American economy. Our research shows business travel spending alone represents 3 percent of national GDP - comparable to the entire domestic auto industry – and that’s nothing compared to how road warrior time on the road helps our companies grow.
