After a Brief Silence, We're Cranking Up the Volume Again!
We have an information packed podcast for you this week as Emma Sun, Investment Associate at Crescent Capital Partners, takes us through her diverse career journey spanning the fields of Investment Banking, Management Consulting, Corporate Strategy and Private Equity. Emma shares a very detailed breakdown based on her first-hand experience of what it is like to work in each industry as we establish the “introductory 101’s” for each industry’s function and then discuss the differences between: day-to-day roles and responsibilities, work life balance, workplace culture, the diversity landscape, skills/qualities that are most valued in each industry. We then learn a few key concepts that are associated with the Private Equity industry starting with a wholistic definition to explain “what is Private Equity”. Emma takes us through the difference between buy side vs sell side and explains what the “buy-side spectrum” (incorporating Private Equity, Venture Capital and Hedge Funds) looks like. Over the past years, we have observed a remarkable growth in our mentees’ ability to confidently navigate the complexities of the finance industry and with this maturation, some of them received the opportunity to fast-track into our subcommittee.
In today’s one, we speak to 3 of such individuals who made the most of their time as a mentee of Bold with BoW and successfully proceeded to secure a spot in our subcommittee and now are active members of our BoW family.

Anika shares her motivations and explorations that led her to a graduate role in consulting. She also touches on how she was able to gauge whether the job was a right fit for her, with her enjoyment of the case interview and exploring a variety of industries being key indicators.

Jess shares her university journey so far, and how her goals and aspirations have changed since setting foot on university grounds (or zoom rooms). It was the confusion she encountered that prompted her to explore the many facets of the financial and professional services industry, and she emphasizes the importance of having a supportive community through the ups and downs.
As much as she enjoyed auditing at the Big 4, Jess was drawn to a career in finance because of its forward-looking nature. She shares her approach to finding a career path that suited her strengths and interest, from taking advantage of university opportunities to reaching out to industry mentors.
Finally, a busy schedule inevitably comes with the challenge of juggling commitments, and Jess offers insight into how she tries to maintain a healthy balance between work and university. She stresses that finding passion in the work you do is crucial to staying motivated and avoiding burnout during stressful periods.

This week we are joined by Christina Tonkin, who shares with us her career journey, from studying geophysics to pursuing finance when she saw the opportunity to do so and was captivated by the complexity and breadth of the work. She is now the Managing Director of Corporate Finance for Institutional Banking at ANZ, leading 350 professionals and enjoys seeing others flourish under her mentorship and guidance.
Of course, taking on a leadership role also poses challenges, and Christina discusses her strategies to ensure her team is happy, healthy and productive. In transitioning from transacting to leading people, she realized the importance of adapting and blending to various leadership styles rather than forcing others to conform to her own.
It is indeed important for a leader to engage with the team, as she mentions, and to be willing to learn from them on a consistent basis. John Handley is a Professor of Finance at the University of Melbourne specialising in the teaching and research of corporate finance, valuation and derivative securities. He holds Bachelor degrees in Commerce and Mathematics from the University of Newcastle and a PhD in Finance from the University of Melbourne.
Prior to joining Melbourne University John worked in corporate advisory with an international investment bank and since that time has consulted extensively with regulators and corporates and provided expert advice on matters which have ultimately been decided in the Federal Court of Australia, the High Court of Australia and the High Court of New Zealand. In recent years, John has regularly visited and taught at Columbia Business School and NYU Stern School of Business in New York. He has published widely in leading international and domestic finance and economics journals and has co-authored a case study for Harvard Business School. His current research interest is in the areas of valuation, share buybacks and contingent capital.

It’s the word that strikes fear into the hearts of uni students and graduates everywhere- networking. Even the most seasoned conversationalist can be a little intimidated by the prospect of discussing their career aspirations with a complete stranger!
Luckily, in this week’s podcast episode we welcomed back BoW alumna Julia Woolrich to take us through the dos and don’ts of a successful networking session. Having started her career as a Project Delivery and Planning Graduate at NAB, Julia reflects on her university experience and explains why her most invaluable network is the one that she built with her peers. She also touches on why COVID-19 isn’t all bad for networking, creative ways to lay common ground, and the networking faux pas to be aware of (hint- angling for a job from the beginning may not always be the way to build enduring professional relationships!).
Julia also takes us through the importance of mentorship, and how networking can help connect you with role models and advocates. Finally, we discuss some ways to maintain your network so that you don’t become that person who only makes contact when they need something. We learnt a lot from Julia’s advice, and we know you will too!

If you’re listening to this podcast, chances are that you are under 25. You might be surprised to find out that women under 25 years of age are the least financially literate in Australia, according to the 2018 HILDA survey. We get it – money talk isn’t exactly…fun. But that doesn’t diminish its importance, especially given the disproportionate impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on women.
In today’s episode we hear from the two co-founders of vida, an emerging social enterprise dedicated to tackling the gender wealth gap at its infancy. After watching their Dads control their household finances and friends struggle with handling their money woes, Angela and Caitlin formed vida to kickstart their own financial independence and share their knowledge and skills with other young women.
They share why it is crucial for young women to get on top of their finances from a young age, along with some of the most important personal finance concepts we should know. Hirumi also discusses how an analyst role at a superannuation fund differs from other analyst roles, what soft skills are required to be an analyst, and how she adapted to the lingo and expectations of the finance world.

In response to these unprecedented times, we thought it was important to address the impact of COVID-19 on the current graduate landscape. We understand that this is a source of stress for many students at the moment, and we hope this conversation can shed some light on the situation.
In this episode, committee members Tayla and Molly sit down with Alexandra Tyrrell, a National Account Manager for GradConnection. Given her role dealing with some of the largest graduate employers in the country, Alex is well placed to provide us with some credible, up to date information about how these employers are managing COVID-19, and what this means for students. We discuss which industries have been hit hardest and which are actually increasing their intake of graduates, what recruiters are looking for now that they can’t gauge things like body language, and why students should be wary about the spread of misinformation in the media. We also touch on what lessons can be learnt from the impact of the GFC on graduate employment, and the benefits/drawbacks of considering further study at this time.

Interviews can be daunting at the best of times, let alone when the future of graduate employment is so uncertain. We want our members to feel confident when they go for an interview, even if those interviews are being conducted over Zoom or other web-based platforms for the time being.
In this episode, we are joined by Alex Hasiotis, an Associate Director at UBS. Drawing on his experience as both an interviewee and an interviewer, Alex takes us through his advice for tackling different kinds of interviews including pre-recorded, case and behavioural interviews. Throughout the discussion, Alex talks about the importance of researching the relevant industry and knowing what the key trends are, how you can show engagement over Zoom and what he believes are the top 3 qualities in an interviewee. Inga was one week into her Bachelor of Arts when she realised that she wanted to switch to Commerce. Zoe always knew that she wanted to be a teacher but thought that she had to pursue another career first, leading her to study Commerce for a year.
We cover everything from the frustration associated with realising you are in the wrong course, to the actual process involved in switching courses and why you should never view any study as wasted time.
