This message is from week two in our series, “Spending, Living, and Giving with a Conscience,” where we take a deep dive into the Biblical perspective on using money and stuff. Every follower of Jesus knows that we are called to love God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength. But what about our wallet? We know we’re are called to make an offering as part of worship, but what about spending money at the grocery store or a restaurant? This series will help us explore today’s culture of consumerism and the impact of what we buy. This three week series will finish up on October 27, and during that worship service we’ll make our commitments to being generous with God by making a financial pledge.

In recent years, many have ignored the wisdom of the past when it comes to managing and spending money. Did you know that if you put all of the storage units in the U.S. together in one place, they would cover Manhattan almost 3 times over!
It turns out, pursuing money and stuff does not result in great happiness but instead greater stress and anxiety. This 4-week series is a chance to explore the keys to contentment and discover joy through simplicity and generosity.

The message today is based on the Old Testament lesson from Joshua 24:1-3; 14-25. Joshua is the successor to Moses. He and Caleb were the only 2 Israelites from the first generations of folks who followed Moses out of Egypt that actually entered the Promised Land. This is mainly because, when everyone else feared their enemies, Joshua and Caleb trusted that God would see them through the tough times. In a final sermon, Joshua tells his people that they are to be living witnesses of their covenant with God.
Taking a cue from the prophet Joshua, I would like us to begin seriously considering how the Holy Spirit might be asking us to witness in new ways to the liberating grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.
This morning’s message is the third in the sermon series Close Encounters of the Triune Kind and is entitled, “At the Corner of Emmaus and Dr. Mann Road.” I would like to share with you, how I encountered the Risen LORD through someone who lived right in my neighborhood, a woman who had a passion for the LORD and wanted to share it with her neighbors.
