Meditation and mindfulness are tools for calming and regulating emotions that help support our children’s mental health and wellbeing. We are becoming increasingly aware that teaching our children preventative proactive health skills can help prepare them for life’s stresses and challenges, and build a more resilient future.
Kasey Hughes is the founder of Mayhem to Mindfulness, and she supports children as a mindfulness facilitator and certified health and wellness coach. Kasey is a mother to 3 boys and they have inspired her to help other kids. She is extremely passionate about the emotional and mental wellbeing of our children and parents and offers child-specific wellness programs to teach kids how to use mindfulness and meditation skills to improve their emotional intelligence.
Children are taught how to fill their cups and give them lifelong skills in managing worries and concerns and how they can tap into sensations of feelings in their bodies to become aware of what they are experiencing. They learn how to accept all different feelings, even the big and uncomfortable emotions to bring stress levels down to be able to think well, manage the effects of emotions, bounce back from setbacks, sleep better and build overall resilience. Emotional intelligence and resilience are superpowers for kids that give them the best chance of having positive mental health outcomes as they grow.
Kasey believes that it’s more important than ever to take steps to improve your children’s mental health. Simple tools like mindful belly breathing through 3 deep breaths can be used at any time to help calm worries or anxiety. Meditation and Mindfulness can calm the brain and build up the prefrontal cortex in children’s brains to become resilient in many different situations. Research shows that this can reduce their potential for anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems.

Then listen to this episode with Wendy Bennett who is a mentor for teens, tweens, and their parents and offers online support, courses, and resources to navigate these often challenging years.
Wendy originally created the online Amaze In Mind App to help teenagers. It offers content that can teach them skills to grow, express themselves and feel connected during their tween and teen years. It allows them to get to know themselves better and develop a secure sense of self. Wendy believes that also teaching parents the skills and understanding of the milestones in teenage years can create awareness and empathy for parents to bond and deepen their relationships.
Wendy has developed an online course called the Chaos to Calm Parenting course as well as an online community of support, to share her expertise and experiences as a counsellor and mother. The course can help parents relate to their kids and become aware of what’s driving their interactions and why things might not be going as they wish. Wendy has developed 6 parenting principles that she uses when working with parents and the 4-week program is an introduction to these principles as well as helping parents achieve some quick wins in shouting less and connecting more with their kids.

Mindfulness in its simplest form is paying attention, being present, and focused in the moment to experience the most out of life. We chat with teacher Sarah Fuller, the founder of Mindful Kids Melbourne about supporting kids through mindfulness practices to get through challenging times and navigate all emotions.
Sarah discusses how mindfulness enables children to tune into their bodies, the emotions they are feeling, and how to calm their mind and body with simple tools like their breathing. As an educator, she believes teaching children about mindfulness and promoting positive wellbeing from a young age leads to positive outcomes and the development of resilience and problem-solving strategies that they will take with them throughout their lives.
Positive-Psychology Mindfulness practices can help kids build problem-solving strategies and have a positive impact on their brain and neural pathways by teaching them to self-regulate an array of emotions by using their five senses.
Mindfulness enables children to pay attention to the present moment without judgement and to be aware of the range of emotions not just happy or sad ones. Positive-Psychology mindfulness practices allow children and parents to fill their cups and experience the small moments of simple joys.

In this episode, we discuss ways to support our teens with their mental and emotional wellbeing.
Wendy is a counsellor with over 8 years of experience in working with young people. Wendy is passionate about educating and empowering young people to help them live their best life.
Today’s culture places a high level of stress and expectation of young people without equipping them with the tools to cope. Wendy has developed the A-Maze-In Mind Program to fill this gap.
The A-Maze-In Mind app was created with a passion to help young people. It originally started as a tool for young people affected by Foster Care who may not have had a stable, parent figure in their lives that they could talk to or learn from. It then developed into a tool that would benefit all young people.
Wendy wanted to create a tool that didn’t tell young people what to do, think or feel but gave them information about common issues, demonstrated tools and strategies that could help with different issues, and gave them the choice and power to decide what would work for them.
The app helps them develop the skills to explore what they are thinking and feeling, to be able to recognise when it's unhelpful, how they can reach out for help or start difficult conversations and so much more.
I highly recommend that parents also read through the tools and resources in the app. This will allow them to support their child, create conversations, share their thoughts and feelings, and maybe even learn something new themselves.
