Never before have you heard anyone repeat themselves on a podcast. Right?
We never promised to break new ground on TRILOGY IN THEORY... which means we are very comfortable with a theme on directors repeating prior works in their filmography with a trilogy of CLERKS 2, DRAG ME TO HELL and BOYHOOD. Kevin Smith, Sam Raimi and Richard Linklater had no fear of proper critics taking them to task for running out of ideas... but it's safe to say they didn't expect this podcast to hold them accountable.
But today is that day. The lack of creativity ends now, filmmakers.

In which we conclude that GET SHORTY is the end of cinema.
Woody Allen is a controversial figure in film... but also has had a professional life of much critical acclaim.
Quentin Tarantino may have a bit of an ego in that massive head of his. And with good reason! He also has lived the life of a critical darling since arriving on the scene with RESERVOIR DOGS.
So when you have a trilogy on a love of movies brought to life that includes Allen's THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO and Tarantino's INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS there is only one conclusion you can make.
That Barry Sonnenfeld's GET SHORTY is the only film worth discussing. This is the end of Trilogy in Theory. Good night.

Two Guys Who Love SIDEWAYS But Not Wine
No expertise to be had on this episode for Alexander Payne's SIDEWAYS. Oh sure, both your hosts have revisited this film many times. One of them fondly remembers experiencing its charms while eating a frozen pizza. So it shouldn't surprise any of you that neither man on this podcast is a wine snob. Or even drinks the stuff.
Though I assure you that we do drink. Probably not as much as we should the way things have been going. ANYWAY the movie is great and Virginia Madsen delivers an ALL TIMER of a speech and just thinking of the shenanigans that Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church get into makes the poor bastard typing out these show notes want to watch it all over again. In the third part in our criminal Christmas trilogy we are granted many a gift from the Steven Spielberg classic (that's right, we're old and you're old) CATCH ME IF YOU CAN. These presents include: A great knock knock joke from Tom Hanks that you most definitely should tell to your non-mask wearing family member. Amy Adams with an even deadlier combination of disarming charm when you add braces to the mix. And Leonardo DiCaprio in no man's land of handsome (which ain't that bad, Leo) in playing too young and too old. Okay maybe that last one was a bit of coal but I believe one of the finest actors of his generation will get over it.
