Welcome to the Apocalist Book Club! Your hosts Nella and Raven are reading all apocalyptic fiction in chronological order. Join the club--you have time now.
Updated every 3rd Wednesday of the month.
Welcome to the Apocalist Book Club. I’m Nella, and I know it’s been a while.
Before we get back to it with season 2, I have some other work to wrap up on our sister podcast.
See, in 2007 a supernatural horror book by Dan Simmons was published and by 2016 the story was adapted by AMC for a 10 episode season called THE TERROR.
Now, I’ll grant you, it’s not an apocalypse. But it is a fictionalized version of what might have happened to the Franklin Expedition.
And listeners, you know how this podcast feels about Doomed Polar Exploration.
I have joined my wife Joy and our friend Danielle on Binge O’Clock as guest historical enthusiast and resident Franklin Expedition obsessive. You can follow along over at Binge O’Clock on Spotify starting May 22, and new episodes will be released every 2 weeks.
Enjoy this early access to the introduction episode--fter all, it was on May 19th, 178 years ago, THAT 129 officers and crewmen under the leadership of Sir John Franklin left England. Their mission was to bridge the gap on British maps, and complete the Northwest passage.
Spoilers: they all died.
So I hope you’ll pick up a copy of the book, give the series a watch, play that Stan Rogers song on repeat, and join us as we unpack the rats nest of book vs show vs historical record.
If you got up to use the restroom, don't worry you didn't miss anything!
Nella continues her Zombie Triple Feature Picture Show with Danielle Ngo and Joy Seldin from the podcast Binge O'Clock!
We unpack DAY OF THE DEAD, then touched on RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, the schlocky other "sequel" to NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD that stole DAY's thunder. Rude.
And that wraps up our Zombie Movie Night!...or...DOES IT???

Hope you visited Concessions at intermission, because here's part 2!
Nella continues her Zombie Triple Feature Picture Show with Danielle Ngo and Joy Seldin from the podcast Binge O'Clock with DAWN OF THE DEAD! Send help, one actor looks so much like Jeeves and Wooster era Hugh Laurie I'm dying.
And remember kids, if you go through all the trouble of cleverly disguising the entrance to your tricked out living quarters, DON'T. LEAVE THEM. WHEN. THE BIKER GANG. COMES.

While Raven and Nella are still prepping for Season 2: The Atomic Age for the Apocalist, Danielle Ngo and Joy Seldin from the podcast Binge O'Clock joined Nella to watch zombie movies...and not just any zombie movies, the ones that started it all!
This first episode explores the history of the zombie movie, and NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. Part 2 will continue with DAWN OF THE DEAD, and we'll end Part 3 with DAY OF THE DEAD (and a touch of RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD for that 80s spicy brain flavor).

#38: The year is 1936 and we're back to our beloved Czech author Karel Capek. This is a much grimmer end of the world when compared to his 1922 novel THE ABSOLUTE AT LARGE. While both novels address the danger of voracious human consumption, this one digs much deeper into the horrors of colonialism, and the exploitation of "the Other". There are no good guys here, but there are no mustache twirling villains either, and Capek gets to the heart of so many of the current dangers that threaten humanity. Although, who was Bondy in real life and what axe did Capek have to grind with him??? Support us at https://www.patreon.com/nellachronism Follow the progress of the Apocalist here.

Raven went back in time to 1909 to read the novella THE MACHINE STOPS with friend of the Apoc-pod, writer and virologist John Skylar!
E. M. Forster was very queer (he wrote MAURICE, after all) and we suspect he had a looking glass into the future because he nailed Zoom Fatigue. Come for a society that has forgotten how to repair the Machine that does EVERYTHING for them, stay for trying to avert an apocalypse with a Strongly Worded Complaint.
You can check out John Skylar's writing at Covid Transmissions.

The year is 1934 and James Leslie Mitchell co-wrote a book with his own pseudonym, which LBH feels like a very Scottish thing to do.
Come for our bisexual, nudist female protagonist who is here to bash the Fash, stay for this one neat trick to help you fall asleep...with the small side effect that you end up in the F U T U R E!

The year is 1934 and we spent more time talking about our Tiffany instead of the book but TBH the book didn't have a declassified FBI file or a sick burn courtesy of Dorothy Parker. This book asks 'what would happen if no one could die?' and no one's the good guy here, not even the secretary.
ESPECIALLY the secretary.
Come for the zombie apocalypse no one asked for (including the author!), stay for the straights being at it again.

The year is STILL 1933 with THE LORD OF LIFE by pseudonym of a pseudonym Neil Bell. 19 men and 1 woman are the only known survivors after a mad Bond villain scientist ends the world and it only gets worse from there because we're pretty sure this author thought he was being DROLL. Come for how fish are NOT pollinators, actually, stay for the Victory of the Incel. Where's a puke emoji when you need one...

Raven and Nella are back with your regularly scheduled Apocalist Book Club! We're still in 1933 but the exciting news is that your hosts are fully vaccinated and recorded this episode face-to-face!
That, and the fact they adored this book is probably why this episode is split into two parts. Come for Nella giving the briefest of histories about Goa and the Inquisition, stay for our new favorite Australian Hedge Witch.

Last time, on the Battle of the Allens! Our heroes join forces with the Evel Terrarists, and leapt to Manhattan’s defense by repairing the artillery battery on Randall’s Island! But just as the shots were fired, the airship disappeared from the skies! Will our heroes get some answers back at the Evel Terrarists’ headquarters at the Central Park Arsenal? Who is the Evel Terrarists’ head scientist? Why did no one think twice about calling themselves the ‘Evel Terrarists’?

The year is 1922 and our cup runneth over with our 3rd lady writer. However, now there's plot all over the floor and there's no mop on hand. This novel is like two novellas in a trench coat. This is like a 7-part Doctor Who arc, but if no one was at the helm. Come for the deeply uncomfortable anti-Semitism in the center of the Earth, stay for SPAAAAAACE. And remember—
