Now in its 21st season, Somernites Cruise is held in historic Somerset, Kentucky, on the fourth Saturday of the month from April through October. Each event attracts over 1,000 show vehicles with spectators, participants and guests coming from around the country, and even the world, to participate in the festivities.
Keith gives Matt the 411 on how the long-running event all got started. From a debut in April 2001 with 275 show vehicles, Somernites Cruise has grown over the past two decades to now average 1,200 to 1,500 vehicles per event. Keith also clues Matt in on another big development for the series that came about in 2005. Several members of the event team were taking in that year’s Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit, Michigan, when inspiration struck for a Vehicle Showcase. That plan was implemented, and now each event spotlights a particular vehicle or type of vehicle, including providing special premier parking.
Keith talks about how the main attraction is a Saturday Show and Shine, which is non-judged and open to all customs, classics, muscle cars and highly modified late models, and shares that there’s also car happenings taking place on Thursday and Friday evenings. Admission is free, and there’s even more to do with live music, a swap meet and a vendor alley on-site. Each cruise season also features several classic car raffles, with this year’s prize including a 1985 Chevrolet C10 truck and a 1967 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible.

This one was sold new at Jim Jenkins Ford in Independence, Kansas, and it has been returned to showroom-fresh condition courtesy of a restoration by R&A Motorsports in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. Meanwhile, Matt didn’t select just one car but a trio in the form of three Chevrolet El Morocco’s crossing the block. He details how at first glance they may appear to be your average Tri-Five Chevrolet, but then goes into the story of how they were created to be classy alternatives to period Cadillacs. Matt also shares how seeing one El Morocco is rare and an exciting experience, let alone three together and up for bids. The desirable set includes a 1956 convertible, which is the only known example to exist, a 1957 convertible, the only remaining original example known to exist, and a 1957 hardtop, one of just 10 known to exist. Add it all up and it’s a unique slice of bespoke automobile history.
Up next, Consignment Director Frank Mecum takes time from his busy auction block duties to join in on the conversation, sharing his thoughts and reflections on Mecum’s 2020 sales successes. The nameplate lingered through the early 1980s before returning in 2005 and continuing up to today. In the second segment, Matt and John are on the line with Seth Burgett, CEO and president of Gateway Bronco, one of the premier shops offering fully overhauled first-generation Ford Broncos. Kicking things off, there’s a bit of car news to get to including reports of upwards trends in new car shopping. The guys give their take if it’s here to last before moving on to the latest pocket rocket from MINI. It’s called the 1499 GT and will be offered as a 2021 model. It harkens to the Mini 1275 GT, which the brand states to be one of the most affordable performance cars of 1969. This new version comes in an exclusive Midnight Black Metallic paint highlighted with black wheels and gold side stripes. There’s a slew of John Cooper Works styling elements including front and rear bumpers. Under the hood is a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine that delivers 134 horsepower. While MINI hasn’t announced if the special edition will be limited in terms of quantity they have announced it’ll costs $27,040. Keeping the theme on speed, John shares the latest from Porsche and their commitment to producing electric vehicles.
From there, the green flag is dropped on going full speed into Road America’s rich decades-long history. Joining the conversation is John Ewert, Communications Director for the facility. He fills Matt and John in on key details like how the track was founded, some of the upcoming projects in the works and the origins of some of the nicknames associated with elements of the racecourse.
Then is Segment 3, the guys give their impressions, thoughts and observations from their time behind the wheel of two of the rarest first-generation Camaros on the planet: the very first 1967 Z28 and the one of one 1968 Z28 convertible. As part of their week at Road America, both had the chance to take each icon out on the track for some real-world testing. They compare notes from the once in a lifetime experience, including the raucous nature of the ’67 and the extreme significance of returning the ’68 back to Road America, a place it once pulled duty as a pace car in the summer of 1969.
This On The Move is off to a fast start with a round-up of highlights from Mecum’s recent auction success in Dallas, Texas. Moving on, the guys talk trucks, starting with Matt’s recent experience with a 2021 Ford F150 equipped with the 3.5L PowerBoost full hybrid V-6 engine. Matt goes into some of the truck’s standout features including the stowable gear selector, tailgate innovations and the onboard ProPower generator system. The guys discuss their perspective on the strategy of a vehicle like this and share some concerns about an all-electric vehicle out on the trails.

The stock horsepower of 710 gets bumped to 1,012. The company claims the SUV will have a zero to 60mph time of just 2.8 seconds while the quarter mile will click off in 10.8 seconds at 126mph. Just 50 will be built and will come with a 1 year/12,000 mile warranty. Another SUV boasting upwards of 1,000 horsepower is the forthcoming GMC HUMMER EV. Matt and John are eager for the reveal, happening October 20th and discuss their best guess of what’s in store for the all-electric supertruck. Wrapping up car news, John has a bit of unpleasant news for Corvette C8 owners in that production has been paused yet again. Joining Matt and John in Segment 2 is Jack Roush, Jr., of ROUSH Performance, a long-standing powerhouse of providing performance solutions. Jack gives the latest on the company, including the growing interest in trucks like the F-150 and Ranger. He also details the most power Mustang yet, the 2020 Jack Roush Edition. The Dream Ride experience, to be held August 21-23 at the Farmington Polo Club in Farming, Connecticut, is celebrating its 20th anniversary and is the signature fundraising event of The Hometown Foundation, Inc. The weekend includes the Dream Cruise, a police-escorted journey on Saturday where drivers pair up with Dream Riders in their classic/exotic vehicles for a 12-mile cruise, as well as the Dream Show, which features cars and motorcycles and the Dream Ride, a Sunday motorcycle tour through the Farmington, Connecticut, countryside. All of the activities celebrate the achievements of the Dream Riders, Special Olympics athletes and individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities from more than 25 different states and three countries. The experience honors these men, women and children living with intellectual disabilities in our communities. This weekend event and year-round movement highlights their determination and willingness to persevere, overcome challenges and shatter stereotypes. The Dream Ride Experience advocates for inclusion and building friendships amongst not only the Dream Riders, but also with the participants and attendees. The event also features a Pet Adoption Center, delicious food, live entertainment and music, a Police K-9 Challenge, a Firefighters Chili Cook-Off, vendors, raffles and a family fun zone. In 2019, The Dream Ride Experience raised a record-breaking $2.4 million dollars, and, to date, more than $12.4 million has been donated to The Hometown Foundation.
