Today we continue our series on some of Jesus's parables. In todays parable we talk about the parable of the wedding banquet and the king who sent his servants out to those who had been invited to the banquet and tell them to come. Those people refused and the king sent his servants back out but the people still refused and some even killed his servants. The king became enraged and sent his army to destroy, murder and burn their cities. He then told his servants to go into the city and invite anyone they could find. The wedding hall was filled but the king noticed one guest who wasn't wearing wedding clothes. The king asked how he got in with wedding clothes but the man was speechless. The king told the attendants to throw him outside into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. "For many are invited, but few are chosen."
In this parable...
The marriage occurs in heaven and is the final revelation of whom God will save.
The king is God.
The son is Jesus (the bridegroom and the church is the bride)
Everyone else is either a servant or an invited guest.

8/23/20 - The Parable of the Wicked Tenants
Sermon Notes
In today's message we read of the parable of the Wicked Tenants. This parable references the story we read in Isaiah 5:1-7 about the land owner who cleared his land and planted the choicest of vines. He put a hedge around it to keep animals out and even build a winepress. He found some tenants to lease the land and agreed to pay him part of the profits...so he went away on a journey.
Later in Matthew 21, Jesus references this story on the Tuesday before his crucification and gives us the parable of the wicked tenants.
In the parable:
- The Owner is God
- In fact, remember God owns everything.
- The Vineyard is Israel, God's people, God's plans and purposes
- It's the method God uses to accomplish His reign in the Kingdom of God
- The Tenants are the religious leaders
- The Servants are the prophets of God who came to collect the fruit of righteousness.
- The Son is Jesus who the tenants plotted against and killed.

8/16/20 - The Parable of the Fig Tree

The Fig Tree is an interesting tree, especially the role it played in Biblical times. It represented the Jewish people, who were expected to bear fruit by leading righteous lives and sharing God's truths with other people and nations of the world.
Jesus came to bring division among people, but peace to our hearts.
Luke 12:56 - Hyprocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don't know how to interpret this present time?
In Luke 12:57-59 He's urging us to settle our accounts with God. And that no one can get out of hell without being held accountable for every sin... which begins with repentance... Which He address in... Luke 13:1-9 - Christ's call for Repentance Interesting, in v. 1-5 this doesn't say that everyone rejected Christ, yet the entire nation was still held accountable.
- It sounds a lot like America today.
- It also emphasizes that death comes quickly and unexpectedly.
- He's reminding us of our mortality.
He urges them to repent or they will perish.
This passage today begs the question, "How displeased is Jesus with the fruit-less-ness in my life?" The tree was unfruitful for 3 years. What about you?

8/9/20 - Overcoming Pride with Humility - Part 2

According to C.S. Lewis, the first step in the pursuit of humility is:
- Recognizing and admitting how proud and conceited we are.
- A second step would be to confess this to God and ask Him for help.
- Third, would be to cultivate the practice of praying for other people.
The reason true humility is difficult... is that true humility takes on the form of a servant... and most of us would much rather be served than to serve.
- Are you humble enough to admit the pride in your life?
- Are you humble enough to confess your arrogance and conceit?
- Are you humble enough to pray for and to serve others?

We all struggle with pride but we can't be like Jesus if we are filled with pride.
Paul wrote in his letter to the Philippians "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves"
God doesn't want us to be prideful and self-centered but to be God centered and have humility in everything we do and have.
God doesn't care about what we have but what we do with what we have.
It is sometimes ok to be excited about what we have but it becomes prideful when we continue to harp on it.

7/26/20 - DNOW 2020 / Missions Testimonies
Today we hear from our Youth about their experiences from this past week.
Due to COVID-19 they weren't able to have their normal DNOW, or Mission Trips this summer but managed to get together this past week for one last mission before Mark leaves New Hope.
We hear their testimonies and also hear from Mark Watts on his last Sunday with us here at New Hope as he reflects back on his time here.

7/12/20 - Be Encouraged! - Today we look at 1 John 2:12-14. John writes and tells us that our sins are forgiven because of Christ and we should be encouraged by this. He gives us encouragement by telling us as children, fathers and young men that because of Christ our sins are forgiven and death has been defeated.
7/5/20 - Today we hear about what the bible says about true freedom in God.

6/28/20 - Today we look at Matthew 23:1-12 and Jesus warning about Hypocrisy. We are to make sure that we lead by example and make sure we aren't living for God only on Sunday, at church or when it is convenient. We need to make sure that we are constantly living for God and setting an example for the World to see.
6/21/20 Father's Day 2020: Today we talk about Joseph's role as Jesus earthly Father. Though Joseph never spoke a word, his actions gave a tremendous testimony for how to live a life of honor and integrity.
