The evolution of the (not so) hairless human body
Leah Redmond is a certified trichologist, who completed her studies with the Institute of Trichology whilst also studying Molecular bioengineering at Imperial College, London!
She has completed her bachelor's & masters projects covering Male Pattern hair loss, when her interest in trichology began, and she is now completing a PHD on the hair papilla.
She has been studying hair fibre pigmentation & human body hair evolution- basically how we evolved to our current (non- furry) state! She has been looking at the body hair of monkeys, compared to humans.
She has written a review which has been accepted by the British Journal of Dermatology.
We discuss how this change in body hair ay have occurred, what even is the dermal papilla and what does it do? Gene mutations, and why we may have hair at all.

Keeping up to date in the world of hair loss
Who better to finish this season but the legendary Dr Jeff Donovan!
Dr Donovan is from British Colombia in Canada. During his training, he became fascinated by the number of skin disorders there are, and wanted to specialise in this. With over 2,000 types of skin disease, he enjoys the diagnostic skills that go into investigating these!
He loves to help people get back to 'normal', and we discuss how hair loss can often take something away from a person.
We explore how to best keep up to date with the ever evolving field of trichology, current literature and studies. Dr Donovan also shares how laboratory investigations differ in different regions, and why this might be.
I also discover the benefits of looking for updates in other fields, when the discussion turns to how some medications can be harmful to pets.

Medical Hairloss treatments ~ Are the side effects worth it?
Dr Ademir Leite Jr has been involved in lots of research into finasteride. He runs a clinic & Trichology school in Brazil.
Originally, when Dr Ademir began studying medicine, he had planned to study immunology, but once he discovered the field of trichology, he changed his mind.
He has suffered hair loss himself, as well as scalp concerns.
We discuss which types of alopecia he sees the most at the moment, and which treatments are effective.
Dr Ademir shares how finasteride works, and we look at the side effects of DHT blockers & 5 a reductase inhibitors, including post finasteride syndrome. He describes how, as a medical professional, he has a responsibility to consider all benefits and down sides when recommending any treatment.
We also discuss natural solutions, if they are effective, and how multi- modal treatments may have more benefits and fewer side effects.

GLP1 medications ~ Does losing weight mean losing your hair?
Rabiya is 49 years old, she is a wife and mother living in Kent, who has lived in many different countries throughout her life.
After not feeling well, she had some tests and her blood pressure and cholesterol were raised, and she was told she was also diabetic. She says she had slowly put on weight over the years, and at the time was 75kg and only 5" tall, with swelling in her hands & ankles.
Her Doctor had advised her to focus on changing her diet and lifestyle, but she knew that she couldn't do it without help. She knows a couple of endocrinologists, and they helped to advise her. She decided to go private, and was prescribed a GLP1 known as Monjuaro.
Rabiya reduced her calories to a deficit, and began a low dose following a plan over an 18 month timeframe. She says that the medication removed her bloating, and the 'food noise', so that she could focus on losing weight and getting healthy. She lost 24kg in 6 months.
Unfortunately, this also led to her experiencing a large amount of hair shedding. Due to this she sought help from a trichologist, and began to focus not just on cutting calories, but on the nutritional value of her food too.
She has now seen a huge improvement in her hair health, as well as her overall health and vitality. She shares her story openly and honestly!

The future of your hair ~ Ensuring transplants succeed in the long term
Dr Dilan Fernando is a medical Doctor & surgeon, who originally planned to practice neurosurgery, however he then gained an interest in hair transplantation, and he has been performing hair transplants now for ten years!
He is Co founder of The Treatment Rooms London, where they offer specialised services, including feminising hairlines for transgender patients, and repairing what he calls 'black market' hair transplant work.
We explore how hair transplants can help reduce gender dysphoria, which can be a barrier to men when transitioning to a woman, and how to take a sensitive approach to the surgery.
Dr Fernando also shares the importance of patience and preparation when it comes to hair transplants, having a roadmap of treatment from pre-treatment to recovery, to ensure the patient gets the best from their hair, and the longer-term considerations.
We hear about the negative side of some clinics, and the practices that lead to poor results and long term issues!

Why Trichology needs to be integrated into hair systems training
Jess has been in the hair industry for many years, along with her business partner, Hayley, who has educated all around the world with Raccoon, and they both have experience with hair extensions.
Whilst trying to meet their clients' needs, they soon recognised that those with hair loss wanted to have hair extensions, but they just weren't suitable. They began to research alternative solutions, and learned different hair systems methods.
Jess joins me today to introduce a new type of system, called signature scalp. This is a silicone based scalp replica system, secured with medical grade adhesive.
They wanted to be able to offer a solution that could incorporate their creative flair, and be able to add a hairdresser's perspective to their hair systems. These systems can be made to suit any colour or style.
We talk about the longevity and versatility of having a hair system, what they can offer, and why it's important to have the education to ensure that each client is a suitable candidate for this service.
Signature scalp offers education, and already have a US ambassador, along with 80 representatives from around the world.

Can lasers help to combat hair loss?
Tamim Hamid comes from a long line of medicine, but chose to enter the engineering world. However, he still had the instinct to want to help people.
Tamim was a NASA engineer, who invented a laser to measure thermoprotection of the shuttles outer shell upon re-entry to the Earth.
Lasers were invented in the 60's, and he learned about them in school in the 80's.
He then invented a new laser in silicon valley. He found a study on lasers & hair growth, which was recorded in 1965 and tested on mice, which showed that a certain frequency could stimulate hair to grow.
Lasers work differently depending on the setting and the frequency. Laser light can stimulate human tissue, specifically hair follicles, and it triggers the mitochondria in the bulge of the hair root. This can extend the anagen phase and stimulate growth in the papilla, along with strengthening the arrector pili muscle.
Tamim has now invented the Theradome helmet, which he says is the only FDA approved device in the world that can stop hair loss.

Improving hair quality ~ How can we get the most out of supplements?
Dr Rajesh (Rajendrasingh) Rajput is an international speaker, & IAT faculty member.
He often completes surgery pro bono for those who have suffered burns, cleft palate, leprosy and skin traumas.
He has researched metabolism in the hair follicle, and monitored changes in hair growth, DHT levels and sensitivity.
Dr Rajesh has a patented cyclical supplementation routine, which has shown an improvement in hair growth of 30-40% +, along with an improvement in scalp and follicle health.
He shares his research on which vitamins can counteract each other, which are synergistic and which are antagonistic, and how intermittent nutrition can give the body time to absorb & process each nutrient.
Dr Rajesh believes that no nutrient can work alone, and that deficiencies are an indication of a problem within the whole system. We look at how smaller, preventative doses can work differently to larger doses used to treat deficiencies. We explore the concept of 'hidden hunger' due to the fact that there is a depleted level of nutrition in our current foods compared to years ago.

Jessica Parrish founded her brand, Shedid & Parrish, to make curly hair easy and a joy to look after.
Jessica is adopted and mixed race, so she gives her unique perspective on identity & why it's so important to who we are. Adopted to white parents in the 1970s at 10 days old, she had some challenges as a child in her environment.
There was noone to help her manage & understand her curly big hair. In her later years, she spent time in the U.S, where she found a lot more products for afro/ textured hair, but they were marketed based on skin tones, not hair types, and a lot of the products had toxic chemicals in.
She wanted to make things easier and more accessible for those with textured or curly hair with products ingredients that are good for the health of the haior, not just cosmetic.'

Talking to children about hair loss and cancer
Lauren MacClain was diagnosed with breast cancer at 40, when her children were from 5-10 years old. Her and her husband wanted to find the best way to speak to their children about what would happen during her treatment, and found that the books that were available didn't quite explain different areas of treatment very well.
Lauren had to wait over the xmas period to get her biopsy results, which was a scary time. After having a mastectomy, they found that it had spread to one of her lymph nodes which meant she needed to have chemotherapy.
Lauren found out about scalp cooling whilst she was researching treatments and decided to try it, as she had been warned that the chemo she needed was very dose-dense and can cause permanent hair loss (PCIA). Because of this, she managed to retain around 50% of her hair, and it grew back quickly afterwards.
She has now written 3 children's books explaining cold caps and chemotherapy treatment, to help families explain to their children what is going on in an easy way.

She shares how the Lee Stafford academy approach within the College has provided systemised learning, with 'recipes' that the students can follow for success.
We discuss how the changes in the minimum wage and budget may reduce the amount of apprenticeships available and she challenges the stigma around a college hairdressing education, and the high standard of facilities they have.

Living and working with trichotillomania ~ from hairdresser and client perspective
Sarah & Liz:
Sarah Sullivan is a hairdresser & educator. She trained in extensions, which led her to train in hair systems and wigs. This then inspired her to further train in trichology, and she now runs a private hair salon and separate air loss clinic.
Liz has had trichotillomania since she was 10. She lost all her hair after witnessing a traumatic car accident. As her hair grew back, she began to focus on it and notice its different textures. She didn't like it as the hairs grew back curly.
Over the years she has been able to manage her compulsion and recognise the triggers. Sometimes she is able to control the compulsion and sometimes she is not.
Liz always dreaded going to the salon to get her hair done. She had high anxiety and people used to point and stare at her which made her feel intimidated.
Since she has found a hairdresser with a knowledge and understanding of hair loss who has a private environment, she says it has taken the stress out of getting her hair done. She now enjoys getting her hair done.
We discuss the best way to approach a client or family member with this condition, and various areas of treatment.

Travelling to Turkey for a hair transplant ~ is it the answer?
Dr Anthony Bared has a background in plastic surgery, with over 15 years as a surgeon.
He trained as a head & neck surgeon and now also specialises in hair restoration. He concentrates on just these few areas, so that he can develop and perfect his craft.
Dr Bared stresses the importance of communication to manage expectations. He also conducts follow ups after hair transplant surgery, seeing his patients back for upto a year afterwards, and how this may mean that travelling internationally for treatment can lead to less reliable, or even unsatisfactory long term results.
We also discuss over- harvesting the donor areas, and how aggressive procedures are not beneficial long term.

Anorexia, eating disorders & hair loss
Dr Laura is a GP in Leeds, and also has a focus on functional medicine.
She says sometimes she feels rushed and struggles to build the relationship with patients that she would like to have. She has to focus on time critical conditions rather than those who may be seen as less serious.
As a young person, she had eczema and acne, and was bullied for this. She then later experienced anorexia, which led to hair loss. eventually she began to investigate what was causing her hair loss, and discovered that it can often be multi factorial.
Dr Laura has a great perspective of disordered eating from both a Doctor's and patient's point of view. She shares the difference between anorexia and disordered eating, and how even those who are overweight can still be malnourished and could experience hair loss.
We also look at how to manage stress and high cortisol levels and the impact it can have on the hair.

How hair systems could have a positive impact on your clients and your business.
Rob has been in the hair industry for 20 years, and now owns Novo Cabello where he provides wigs & hair systems for clients as well as education for hairstylists and barbers so that these services are accessible. These salons can partner with him as well as learning how to fit the systems.
He decided to train in hair after a back injury prevented him from pursuing his career in dance & singing. He opened his first salon at the age of just 24, which he owned for 17 years.
The first time he fitted a hair system it was for his friend, who had suffered severely with their mental health because of their hair loss. This had such an impact on them both that it led to him finding his niche fitting systems and wigs. He wants to break down the stigma and for those who wear them to be celebrated and for it to become normalised.

Making better product choices & understanding your hair & scalp needs
Kameese Davis, a mother of two from Birmingham, is a self-proclaimed entrepreneur, visionary and information geek.
She has created her own vegan haircare brand, Nylah's, after she struggled to find products for her daughter's needs when she was only 4 years old and suffered from seborrheic dermatitis. There was nothing natural that she could use for her scalp condition and hair type.
In the end she resorted to sourcing products from America, which was costly and time consuming, making it unreliable long term.
She shares her journey, along with her own experience of hair loss, which added to the struggles of starting her own business.
We discuss how some product brands are only concerned with the bottom line, even using waste products at ingredients to maximise profit, regardless of the impact on the end user.
She also talks about ingredient consciousness, and how many products ,marketed to black women are dangerously high in chemicals or toxic.
She has created a product line that celebrates her daughter's identity and her natural beauty.

We talk about how important it is to have the right ingredients, in the right levels, to ensure that the supplement is effective, as Deborah states, all the systems in the body need to work in harmony for optimum hair health, like an orchestra.

Sergio Cardona is a second generation Trichologist, following in the footsteps of his Father, who he worked alongside as well as being his mentor.
We discuss hair miniaturisation, how it happens, how to recognise it, and whether the process is reversible, along with the differences between telogen effluvium and androgenic alopecia.
Sergio shares how hair shedding can have an effect on the hair follicle, and the exact point that the hair reduces where it can no longer be reversed. He also shares how telogen effluvium may show signs of hair miniaturisation but that it doesnt compromise the hair follicle in the same way that genetic hair loss might.

Is there inequality when it come to treating hairloss?
Dr Rex is from Arizona. He grew up in Nigeria and returned to the US at 18, where he studied medicine in New York. After learning that it was rare to find an African American dermatologist, he decided to specialise in this area.
We discuss how important it is to have representation within medicine, and how all practitioners should have a cultural understanding and empathy for their patients' backgrounds, traditions & beliefs.
It was after a mission trip to Ethiopia that he decided to become a Physician so that he could help people in rural underserved communities. He believes that there is an inequality within healthcare, particularly around the socially & economically challenged.
He works hard to encourage the future generation of dermatologists to use their skillset to increase access to dermatology in less desirable localities.

Dr Ellana Stinson is from Boston, Massachusetts. She is an award winning ER physician, and has battled health issues which has led to hair loss and poor hair condition.
Dr Ellana shares that after her issues with her health, having thyroid cancer and surgery, medication and dealing with fertility issues, she found that she began to develop a greater awareness of the ingredients in the products she was using.
Many products on the market contain harmful chemicals, such as endocrine disruptors, and she was keen to move away from this. As a natural problem solver who is inquisitive and has a degree in chemistry, she decided to create her own product brand.
We discuss the health equity & disparity in medicine, and also in haircare, and Dr Stinson describes how there is still a lot of work to be done to accurately assess how safe the products and chemicals used in salons are, and regulations around safe usage practices such as ventilation etc.
She shares how education is key, as some products have hidden chemicals or confusing labelling, and how you can find healthier alternatives.

How important is nutrition when it comes to hair health?Charlotte Lucas was a Pharmacist with the NHS for 25 years, and she became a little disillusioned with the general lack of preventative action in medicine. She has now completed a master's in nutrition.

Charlotte shares that nutrition plays a huge part in relation to health, and having experienced hair loss twice herself, once as a teenager during her GCSE's, and then later during menopause too.
She uses a combination of functional medicine, nutritional medicine and pharmaceutical medicine.
We look at how inflammation can affect hair loss and autoimmune conditions, as she states that 75-80% of the immune system is located in the gut, and our microbiome impacts so many aspects of our health.

We discuss taking a holistic approach to hair health, looking at many contributing factors, such as diet, stress & cortisol levels, hormones and fitness levels. She recommends nutrition, counselling, even meditation alongside some more conventional treatment options, and more recent innovations such as PRP.

Hair transplantation ~ Navigating the industry from a patient's perspective
Spencer Stevenson is an advocate who approaches hair transplantation from the unique perspective of a patient, having had multiple hair transplant surgeries himself.
Through his own mistakes he has learned a great deal, and works hard to help prevent others from being conned or suffering from unethical practices. He knows first hand that the hair transplant industry is not always ethical, and it is important to carry out due diligence and research well before any transplant or procedure.
When spencer was young, he had tons of hair, and this was part of his identity. By the time he was 21, he had began to recede, and by the time he was 24, he had become so self-conscious that he began to become reclusive & depressed. He avoided social situations & missed out on important events.
He tried a hair system, and minoxidil but still wasn't happy. He saw an advert and thought all his prayers had been answered, but this was the start of a long and arduous journey to regain more hair.
Spencer now helps to advise others on what is best for them, helping them to avoid the pitfalls and negatives of the industry.

Supporting hair growth through chemical burns, scarring alopecia and menopause.
Angela Fields is from Florida. She first experienced issues with her hair when she suffered from chemical burns, following the use of relaxer to straighten her hair.
She then began to experience thinning in perimenopause, and discovered that she had a deficiency in Vitamin D.
After these issues were resolved, she then developed a scarring condition, central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, known as CCCA, and has had to undergo scalp injections and biopsies to help to identify and treat this .
Hair health at this point became extremely important to Angela, but, as she has an allergy to fragrances, she found that she was unable to use 96- 98% of haircare on the market that contains fragrance. She decided to make something for herself in her kitchen, but after being laid off from her job in the corporate world she was pushed to take the product range to market.
She now works to help & support those with hair health concerns, particularly leading up to the menopause, and has created a supportive community where she offers education and advice.

What happens when Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia goes undiagnosed
Lesley Rutter lives in Newcastle, around 10 years ago, at the age of 40, she began to notice severe hair shedding. The front of her hair began to be itchy, her hair follicles became raised & inflamed, and her hairline began to recede away.
She went to the doctor, and he told her it was just stress related,, and it would go away on its own.
She returned to various doctors over a period of six years, where she was repeatedly sent away and told that it was just because of stress.
She was left undiagnosed, not knowing where to turn or what she could do to treat her condition. She had bouts of severe shedding, including loss of eyebrows and lashes, which means her eyes are constantly itchy.
Eventually, a nurse noticed that her confidence was being severely affected, and that this was having an impact on her life, and encouraged her to advocate for herself and demand to be referred for treatment. This led to her being sent to a dermatologist, who finally diagnosed her with FFA. By this time, however, she had lost around two inches of her hairline, and was shocked to discover that this would not be reversible.
She now has a treatment plan, and has made connections with others, who can understand what she is going through, which she says has made a huge difference.

Dr Jemma Boyle has has alopecia since she was 10 years old, which began as small bald patches which she says could be easily hidden. By her late teens, it began to get worse & more obvious. At the age of 30, she first lost all of her hair. This then grew back, then she lost it again.
She is a Doctor who specialises in breast surgery & cancer research, who has been using JAK inhibitors to treat her own condition.

The facts about scalp cooling
Claire Paxman, the brand ambassador & Director of global education for Paxman scalp cooling, the global leader in scalp cooling.
Claire shares how it was her Mum having breast cancer in the 90's that first made her aware of scalp cooling, when she tried the cold cap. Her Mum went on to lose her battle with cancer at just 44. She was 14 when she had to shave all her Mum's hair off, which was a devastating experience for her.
Her Grandfather invented the first ice bank cooler for beer, and they began to use their knowledge of cooling systems to develop a better scalp cooling system which is a medical device.
Vasoconstriction can have a great effect on how much hair is lost during chemotherapy treatment, and also how fast it will grow back.
Claire shares how knowledge & education around the use of the cold cap is vital, and is working hard to ensure that the correct information is given and available to hospitals and patients.

Penny has seen some very unusual cases, which she shares with us today.
She presented these at the World Trichology Conference in London, which she says was the highlight of her career!
We look at the possibility of temporary greying, and how it may be triggered by a stressful event. Hair pigmentation could be used to show past life events by being monitored and measured.

Persistent Chemotherapy Induced Alopecia
Jo had chemotherapy and radiotherapy in 2017, following breast cancer. She has had a double mastectomy and a hysterectomy, which plunged her into medically induced menopause.
She also lost her hair due to the treatment. She had been advised that this would probably happen, but was given the impression that it would grow back. She was not really given any information or advice regarding the cold cap, and after treatment, her hair didn't really start to grow back.
Jo sought help from her doctors, dermatologist and even a trichologist. She tried minoxidil, which yielded no results, and eventually was advised that her hair follicles seemed damaged, and after seven years, her hair has never fully grown back.
It wasn't until she spoke to a scalp cooling expert that she heard the term Persistent Chemotherapy Induced Alopecia, and found out how common it is.
Jo set up her instagram account 'Titless Wonder' to help to spread awareness around breast cancer, the options available, and the reality of the possible side effects of treatment, such as PCIA. She is determined to ensure that people know all the information to be able to make a fully informed decision on their treatment plan.

Why your mindset is so important
Belinda Hillman says she is very aware of what it is like to feel 'less than', describing herself as a bit of a lost teen who was living in a bedsit at the age of just 16.
The hairdressing industry helped her to turn her life around, going from a council estate to working on a cruise ship and travelling the world. She then went on to own a salon, but felt that she needed more help with her own mental health so as not to feel isolated.
She then created the brand Belinda Mindset, where she encourages people to focus on what they are good at. She provides education through her HABIA accredited mindset course, sharing that she likes to leave a lasting impression on her learners and add value by paying attention to the small details. Her aim is to inspire people, even if it is just for one moment in time.
She has created six different packs of cards to provide guidance for motivation and mindset.
Belinda is currently a part of the VTCT collective tour, and is also offering education for Wella professionals.

Why consistent habits and the right advice are paramount to regaining healthy hair.
Karis is 35 and lives in Kent. She began experiencing issues with her hair three years ago, when she had noticeable shedding which led to visible thinning.
She describes her life at the time as very stressful and difficult, a relationship breaking down and facing many challenges led to her not taking care of herself as well as she could have. She began to notice a large amount of hair in her brush and in the shower.
She investigated all the possible causes of her hair loss including traction alopecia and chemical/ heat damage.
Karis stresses the importance of using good quality products, and recognises their value. She believes that consistency is key when it comes to hair health.
Her hair was her crown, and losing that has had an impact on her confidence.
She says 'you can't put a price on the right advice' as we talk about being able to access and interpret information such as blood tests to accurately determine any deficiencies she has. Sharing this information with Karis meant we could look at the many different supplements she had bought, versus what she actually needed to make a difference.
We look at everything she had put in place to restore her hair to its former glory.

How to look after your hair & scalp in winter
Jill Lee, a hairstylist of 25 years, qualified as a trichologist with USTI over a year ago.
Trichologists are not very commonly known in America, and she loves being able to help her clients on a deeper level.
Jill tells all on how winter can have an impact on the hair & scalp - what does it need?
We discuss how you might want to change or add to your product range to help to give moisture and nourish the hair. Is winter shedding real or a myth?
We also look at the different scalp conditions, such as seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff and dry scalp- how do we tell the difference?
Jill states that scaly conditions not properly looked after can become breeding grounds for fungus and yeast, and the practices that can make these worse. We look at cleansing and exfoliating the scalp as well as the face and skin.
What do you need to add or include in your hair & scalp care regimen to get the best from your hair this season?

David Barreto began to notice is hair thinning at the age of just 20, and by the time he was 22, this had began to be quite noticeable.
He tried various treatments, but did not see any markable improvement. This led him to look into genetic hair loss, where he found that there has been a lot of research done that hadn't been put into use in commercial products. He wanted to bridge the gap between science and commercial products.
He wanted to create products that used natural solutions, adding compounds found in nature, rather than chemicals or synthetic drugs to treat hair loss, as he found that compliance can be an issue with some medical alternatives, along with the health warnings and side effects putting people off or making them a non- viable option.
He then began to create System K11, a science-led company, of which he is co-founder.
Looking at the driving forces behind genetic hair loss, he found studies that showed a correlation to the rate of hair loss and diet, researching into sugary drinks and type 2 diabetes as examples of how a dysregulated metabolism can have an effect on the mitochondrial rate of respiration which limits the amount of energy the hair follicles gain from the glycogen stores around the hair follicles.

How colitis related hair loss led to a career in wigs
Hediye Garcia has a background in hair, and was on the path to studying to be an educator when she began to experience hair loss.
She was simultaneously suffering from Alopecia Areata and Telogen Effluvium, which she originally put down to stress, but further investigation showed deficiencies in folic acid and iron.
Hediye was puzzled as to how she could have become anaemic when she follows a very healthy Mediterranean style diet, and after tests she was told she had colitis, which meant her body wasn't absorbing nutrients from food effectively.
She describes her hair loss, along with her diagnosis of colitis very mentally challenging, and she had to try to put her condition into perspective and focus on being grateful, not letting it consume her days.
This all led her to begin to take an interest in wigs and hair systems, and she even made her own wig!

Nadia Dodds is a permanent make up artist who, even though she describes herself as having a good head of hair, since having children and getting more white hairs, her front hairline has thinned out, which makes it appear like she is receding.
Since her boyfriend trained in scalp micropigmentation, he suggested to add some colour to give the appearance of density, and she is very glad she did!
We discuss how it works, the options available, why it's important to find a reputable artist who will give you honest advice, maintenance and even removal!
Nadia also shares that her mum has had the treatment done after years of using hair fibres, and how much confidence it had given her, proving that SMP is not just for men or shaven heads.
We also discuss how to deal with negative comments or trolling.

When should you consult a dermatologist for help?
Dr Elle de Moll is a Connecticut- based dermatologist who is in support of the Global Healthy Living Foundation's non-profit campaign, the Health, Education + Reliable Outreach + Empathetic Support, which has been created by, with and for stylists, salons & barber shops to equip stylists to support their clients with skin & scalp conditions.
Dr Elle discusses why it is a benefit to everyone for stylists and therapists to be able to help to address any skin & scalp concerns their clients may be facing.
We talk about new & emerging treatment options, how medicines are getting more targeted & precise, and how she has studied new treatments for melanomas, using the immune system to help fight cancer.
We discuss how to recognise skin cancer and the signs to look for, inequalities and why people of colour are less likely to visit a dermatologist for help. They also may experience undertreatment of chronic conditions. Dr Elle also challenges the misconception that only fair-skinned people can get skin cancer, and how someone may have a genetic pre-disposition.
She urges anyone who is concerned to seek help, and doesn't like to see anyone being preyed upon by unethical marketing companies.

How can you get exposure and attract potential clients
Sarah Yorke opened her own salon at just 23 years old! 7 years later and the salon felt more like a prison than a blessing.
She decided to move to Manchester to follow her heart, and found herself in the position of trying to find a new hairdresser herself.
She also needed to build a new clientele and wanted to get her work seen by as many people as possible.
Sarah knew that entering a random salon in her local area was a risk, and wanted to create a way to find out what the stylists were like within the salons, and what their work looked like, being able to see what they specialise in and their education and experience.
She created the Stylebook Directory, meaning you can search for exactly what you want and find the stylist perfect for your needs.
Following this, she also created Stylebook Education, for students and educators to look for employment, staff, and for them to showcase their work or look for models.

Why I had to choose my hair over my acting career W/ Shalita GrantAn actress since High School, Tony- nominated Shalita grant publicly quit a popular long standing Television show after suffering from traction alopecia, thinning hair and breakage in front of an audience of millions.
Holywood's tendency to ignore the needs of actors with textured hair meant that Shalita faced daily hair practices and techniques that caused severe long term damage to her own hair. The producers did not understand or provide for the complex needs of her hair and this put limitations on her career.
She also faced backlash and trolling online when she tried to wear a wig to minimise further damage to her own hair. At the time, she could see no other option than to quit the show.
After overcoming her own obstacles, she created the Four Naturals treatment to renew, restore and rebuild her hair, which is now in the best condition and more manageable than its ever been.
This meant that her public and traumatic hair experience has not had to lead to her abandoning acting or hiding her hair forever. She chose to heal, both inside and out, and is now finding ways to be able to be on set with her own natural hair.

What is it like to have Chronic Telogen Effluvium?
Tom Holmes describes his hair loss journey as a rollercoaster.
After having cervical fusion surgery, he was left unable to eat or drink whilst in recovery and quickly lost 30lbs. He then began to lose his hair rapidly.
He shares his story with us, his recovery and then further bouts of extreme shedding. He has correlated these episodes to periods of sudden weight loss. Every time he loses hair he finds it just as painful as the first.
He was so self conscious that he wore hats everywhere, even to dinner out and to a wedding! Because he didn't want to answer questions around his hair loss and found it upsetting when people assumed he had cancer.

How you can create your own product range
Karen Agnes created K2A skincare in 2016, with the aim to produce a range that contained bespoke ingredients that resonated with the brand, her values, and a holistic approach to beauty treatments.
She looked at the whole holistic approach when it comes to using and buying products, and this range was made with selected ingredients, how they all work together and how they can enhance the whole customer experience.
We discuss how to set up your own range of products, how easy it is to do, the pitfalls and legal considerations, along with all the steps involved.
What are the advantages of having your own products?
Karen also speaks about the importance of choosing to work with people who are in alignment with your brand values and vision.
Along with the products, Karen has built some personalised rituals and application techniques to make sure that the salons who use them stand apart from others in their area, giving them a point of difference, and how this can build loyalty for you and the brand.

Look Good Feel Better
Kassi McFarlane is Hairstylist who specialises in styling hair for weddings & special occasions.
She first heard about the Look good feel better charity 20 years ago, when she worked on cosmetic counters recommending products.
The Charity is now approaching its 30th anniversary!
Look good feel better supports those receiving cancer treatment to be able to be given advice and help on how to adapt to changes treatment may make to your hair, skin, body shape, (including eyebrows, nails, face shape).
Their volunteers include make-up artists, Hairstylists and stylists to help you learn methods & techniques for changes in make-up, how to deal with new hair growth, different lengths, texture & colour, skin texture and what to wear for different body sizes or shape.
Kassi describes how 'superficial' treatments such as hair and make-up can have a deeper significance for cancer patients who just want to get back to feeling like themselves.

The benefits of an apprenticeship in the Hair Industry
Sarah Abel from TNB skills training joins me to talk about the importance of apprenticeships within the Hairdressing industry and the benefits of the programmes.
Sarah has been in the industry since she was 13! She returned to hair & beauty at 38, learned nails, and took over a business. She realised that there was a gap in the market for nail training apprenticeships.
She has had to often defend the industry against the common misconception that hairdressing or any vocational courses are not a pathway to a lucrative career, and the negative connotations that these are only for students who are not suitable for A-level courses or University.
Sarah has the stats to prove that actually these jobs can be just as high earning if not more!
We discuss the benefits of an apprenticeship programme, and what the future may hold for the industry.
Her academy has grown since 2008, and she has worked hard to find ways to work with employers to make sure both them and their trainees are well supported.

How hair loss made me a better Hairdresser
Jessica Young has been in the Hair industry for 16 years, and thought that she knew enough about the hair & scalp to advise and help her clients; That is, until she began to experience extreme hair shedding herself!
She then realised that there was a lot more that she could learn, and tells how her own journey has made her be able to support her clients so much better too.
As a busy mum, when she first noticed her hair loss, she didn't really take any action, and now realises that she was on the verge of burnout, with low iron, migraines, body shakes and brittle, poor quality hair.
We discuss how hair loss can be a sign of other issues such as deficiencies in the bodies that should not be ignored, and where to go to get effective help.
Jess says that her experience has changed her approach to client consultations, and has made her a better hairdresser as a result.

How your relationship with your hair affects your relationship with yourself
Hannah Bradley, the Curly Confidante, is a hair coach who helps people not only manage their hair, but to explore their relationship with their hair, and describes how this can have an impact on your whole relationship with yourself.
Having been bullied in primary school, Hannah has experienced having low self- esteem, sharing that it knocked her confidence and made her not like her hair.
She began to straighten her hair or tie it back so as to try to 'fit in' and not draw attention to herself.
She fully understands the impact of a bad hair day, and we discuss how the way we feel about our hair can be just as damaging as picking at any aspect of our body in the mirror every day.
We have so many beauty standards that we are expected to conform to, and Hannah advocates for us to listen to our inner voice, doing things because they feel good, and not because you feel you 'should'.
We look at how your relationship with yourself can affect your relationship with your hair, and how you need to be kind to yourself and put yourself first.
Hannah says: Be your own best friend & advocate, don't let the harshest criticism come from within!

The importance of eyebrows ~ when alopecia affects your facial hair
Jason Berndt was a fighter pilot in the military until recently, when he sete up 'My Two Brows'.
He believes that the stress of the military training and studying an engineering degree have contributed to his alopecia.
His first experience of hair loss was alopecia areata patches at around 8 years old.
Then at 19, at military college, he noticed it again, and the hair on his right eyebrow began to disappear, along with his eyelashes.
Eventually, he had lost so much hair he had to shave it off, which he describes as a traumatic experience.
He has looked into various treatments, but really found options for men to disguise what is happening pretty limited. It was difficult to find a solution that didn't draw attention to himself or look unnatural.
In the end, he came across temporary eyebrow tattoos, but there were not a lot of options or choice, so Jason began to make his own!
He now produces many different colours, styles and sizes. These help not only those with hair loss but also conditions such as trichotillomania too.

Curl Daddy ~ Helping men embrace their natural hair texture
Edwin Borquez is the founder of Curl Daddy products.
His Caribbean heritage has given him very curly hair and a great look which led to a career in modelling. This was a confusing time, as some people would tell him to tame his curls to help blend in to get more work, and some would advise him to embrace his textured hair for a more different look.
He has had to learn to style and handle his hair after chemically straightening it and damaging it to 'fit in'.
When looking for products for his hair, he struggled to find any that he could identify with. He also wanted something with more natural ingredients, as he didn't want to use products every day containing chemicals that would be absorbed through his skin.
This led him to create a range of products with a natural formulation that were easy to use and apply, with hair & scalp health as the focus.

How can salons work to support trans clients
Mac McGregor is 57, and is a trans activist and educator
Growing up, he had zero exposure to the LGBTQ+ community, but from a very early age found that he didn't identify as a girl.
They got into martial arts, which allowed him to have an outlet to be more masculine and also to see more of the world.
Due to the regulations of the sport, Mac waited until his martial arts career ended before medically transitioning at the age of 42.
Once he began this journey, he started to look for queer- friendly salons that would welcome him and understand his needs.
Mac shares how there is a high rate of suicide in young LGBTQ people due to isolation, and there is a need for more mentors in the trans community.
He invites people to look at social conditioning and question what serves you and what doesn't.

Using JAK inhibitors to treat alopecia areata
Tommy Hall began experiencing hair loss in November 2021, and within four weeks, he has lost around 70% of hair over his entire body.
He has no idea what had caused his hair loss, and found that there was no cover from the NHS to help him with treatment.
He went to the dermatologist and was given a diagnosis of alopecia areata, which was a relief and a shock.
Tommy began researching treatment options, and happened upon a Facebook group where some members had been using JAK inhibitors to treat their hairloss, a relatively new treatment using drugs that were originally designed to treat rheumatoid arthritis.
He is now coming to terms with this new treatment regime, and that he may be living with alopecia his whole life.
We look at how to find affordable treatment, the side effects and dealing with the unknown.
Tommy describes how he feels empowered by his ambition and strength to find a solution to his condition, and he is happy to be able to help others on their journey and share his progress.

Does alopecia affect beard growth? ~ How to promote a healthy beard
Tudor Tanase, known as The Hairloss Dude, began to take an interest in hair loss when he wanted to improve his beard growth at 18.
He started to use minoxidil, but found that he experienced negative side effects. As he began to develop the signs of male pattern hair loss, he began to apply the solution to his scalp and the same issues arose, causing dandruff, dry skin and irritation.
He then began to look into the formulation of the different products and the ingredients these products contained.
We discuss how genetic hair loss happens, what is the cause, and how can you access accurate information on effective treatments to prevent unnecessary spending on products and treatments that don't work.
Tudor shares tips on how to promote healthy beard growth, and we explore how Dihydrotestosterone affects hair growth and beard growth in different ways.
He shares his knowledge on product formulations and ingredients to aid the metabolism and absorption of products, and describes how there is a huge difference in the quality and performance of a product depending on the amount and quality of the ingredients and the manufacturing processes.
Tudor notes the lack of innovation in the field by the major brands and how using experienced factories for production is important especially for higher strength formulas.

Should all hair salons cater for Afro Textured hair?
Karen Roberts lives in Bromley, UK. She is the owner of Mintwave Radio and the host of 'A coffee with Karen' podcast.
She is mixed race, with Afro Textured hair.
She was adopted by two white parents, and lived in Tunbridge Wells in Kent, where there was very little diversity, and they didn't really know how to handle her hair type.
Support for adoptive families at that time was minimal, and none of the local salons were capable of working with Afro Textured hair.
She found herself as a teenager learning how to braid her hair herself, and getting a train into London to visit a specialist salon.
We discuss whether salons should endeavour to offer services for Afro Textured hair, or whether it is better for some salons to specialise.
Karen talks about how unsolicited comments on her hair affected her self esteem and the damage this can do.

Alopecia Universalis at 17 ~ Why it's important to find connections
Frank Cornine, 38, has been living with alopecia since he was 17 and in High School, when within 6 months he experienced a total loss of hair from his whole body!
He describes his visit to the dermatologist to get help as quite cold and not very compassionate, saying his initial patches of hair loss may get better, or they may get worse.
The uncertainty of whether his hair would all fall out or return was difficult to deal with.
He describes losing a part of his identity, how he no longer looked like his family members and actually admits he had an Identity Crisis because of not looking like himself.
High School and College were difficult; he didn't know anyone with alopecia and didn't have anyone he could talk to who understood what he was going through.
He has now set up his own podcast, Alopecia Connection to help people going through hair loss realise they are not alone.

What is the cold cap and how is it used during Chemotherapy?
Julia Smith was shocked when she was diagnosed with Paget's disease, a form of breast cancer, despite her having no lumps on her breasts.
She had surgery to remove one of her nipples, which she thought would be the end of her treatment, but then found she had to have chemotherapy as her cancer was hormone receptive.
After much deliberation, she decided to try the cold cap during chemotherapy to try to minimise her hair loss from the treatment.
She describes her experience, what she has learned and how it works.
Julia's uplifting philosophy is 'Be bitter or be better'

Is your business sustainable? How you can recycle 95% of your salon waste!
JC Aucamp has spent 25 years in the hairdressing industry.
He was shocked to realise that the local council made no provisions to recycle any of the Salon's hairdressing waste.
He began to measure how much waste the business was producing and decided to develop his own solution.
JC is now the founder of the Salon Sustainability Club, enabling salons to recycle 95% of all the waste they create.
They work to support everyone in the industry from freelancers to large salons.
We discuss some simple ideas to help begin your recycling journey, and how to get the clients involved too.
Almost all waste products can be recycled, including hair, which is compostable, but can emit greenhouse gasses when sent to landfill.
They recycle 2 1/2 to 3 tonnes of foil every two months!
Salon Sustainability works to support the HABB & Enham Trust Charities.

How to handle those difficult conversations around wigs and hair loss.
Ann Fox and Joanne Atkinson both join me for this touching discussion around their incredible work with the My New Hair charity.
Ann's Mum died of lung cancer when she was 18, and this spurred her on to work in nursing.
Similarly Joanne has spent 35 years in cancer care and has a PHD in end of life care after a friend died of leukaemia.
They were shocked to find that although they strive to give their patients the best possible care, the aftercare they received when it came to procuring a wig was severely lacking.
The ladies decided to get involved in the L'Oreal My New Hair programme, along with Trevor Sorbie, to help educate hairdressers in how best to help cancer patients get a better standard of care and service.
They have produced a toolkit to help patients to get a suitable wig and be able to have it fitted and customised.

Why business education is just as important as being a great hairdresser
Antony Whitaker has been hairdressing since 1978. He has trained with the best and owned three successful salons and had his own training schools.
He now puts his wealth of knowledge and experience to good use as a salon business coach after finding that stylists on his hairdressing courses were just as keen to learn about their business as they were their craft.
Many hairdressers are creative people, who don't have any formal business training or qualifications. Creative people often see the business side of a salon as boring.
But Antony is here to explain how business can be just as creative, and how it is an ever-changing entity in itself, constantly growing and evolving.

How Hairdressers can better support clients with hair loss
Louise Howard-Long set up her own salon at 24, and thought that she was an understanding hairdresser, who could help support her clients through problems such as hair loss.
That is, until she experienced hair loss herself!
She describes her experience with two simultaneous alopecia conditions as one that affected her wellbeing, her sense of self and caused her to lose her sense of perspective.
She took to Instagram and created videos documenting what was happening to her, and got a really positive response. She even took time off work to come to terms with her hair loss.
She is now passionate about supporting her clients in more ways if they suffer from hair loss, giving them more options and adding more information to their website about products and techniques that can help them to disguise and manage their condition.

When Candace Christina turned 42 years old, after a mild case of COVID, she began to notice bald spots one month later. She also started to shed hair rapidly, and was finding it all over the house!
She then began to lose more and more hair, and was then diagnosed with alopecia universalis. She says that losing her hair was very traumatic, and the beginning of a huge journey for her to be more intentional and to embrace joy.
She created a documentary, sharing her hair loss journey. Being so open about her hair loss is difficult for her as she is usually a very private person, but she hopes that this will help and support others.
She describes how this experience has led her back to joy, and embracing the positive, fun side of life, including spending better time with her kids. She is determined to make her healing journey a positive experience.
She encourages anyone experiencing hair loss to make room for the new version of you; work out what makes you happy and do more of it!

Hair transplants and scalp micropigmentation ~ how they can be used togetherCaitlin James has a background as a beauty therapist.
She expanded into medical beauty options and started to work alongside a hair transplant surgeon as a transplant assistant.
She first became aware of Scalp micropigmentation at a conference in Alaska; it wasn't common in Australia at the time. And so SMP Australia was set up 7 years ago.
Caitlin realised the potential for SMP to work hand- in- hand with transplant surgery to camouflage scarring, add density to transplanted areas and also work to minimise any scarring on the donor sites, especially if they have been over harvested.
She also finds that as clients age, they may find that hair systems or wigs can be limiting for their lifestyle and also start to look unnatural, and SMP can then help people transition to a more natural option.

Life after chemotherapy ~ When and how is it safe to colour my hair?
Raoul Perfitt shares his knowledge and expertise on what cancer treatment does to the hair, and the best advice for those wanting to return to colouring their hair after their treatment.
We discuss how to proceed cautiously and safely when introducing anyone who has had cancer or illness back to colour. We also look at using professional techniques to create great results using safer options.
Organic colour systems was borne following the need for a safer hair colour with less chemicals, organic ingredients, no animal products or animal testing.
They noticed that colour technicians who use the products day in, day out, were becoming allergic to hair colour. So much so that they were having to abandon their careers.
Approved by the NHS and the British Trichology Association, they have created a safer product, not just for clients but for the hairdressers that use them too.
A safer product means a less chemical working environment. This enabled those with allergies or health issues to be able to return to industry again.
It also gives salons an option for those clients that have health issues and need a gentler option.

Pilomatrixoma ~ why you should get that lump on your scalp checked!Sarah Brooks shares her experience of being told she had skin cancer after developing a tumour on her scalp, which originated from a hair follicle.
Sarah first noticed she had a problem with her scalp when it became so tender that the cold wind was causing her pain and discomfort!
She didn't really know where to go for help, but her GP referred her to a dermatologist, who made her feel like she was to blame, and gave her a shock diagnosis on the spot!
He took a biopsy and it was sent off for analysis, and she went home on her own, stunned.
She describes feeling abandoned and lonely after her diagnosis and after surgery, with no real follow up or aftercare advice.
It only occurred to her afterwards that her experience could have been very different and may have had a very serious outcome.
She advises anyone with any suspicious growths or lumps on the scalp to go and seek help now, and not to wait.
Pilomatrixoma, or pilomatricoma, is a benign skin tumour derived from the hair matrix, often found on the scalp or neck. They can turn into pilomatrix carcinoma, which are malignant. So it is important to get it checked out.

Why hairdressers make great Trichologists
Wil Fleeson has been a hairdresser for three decades, and is now on the board of directors for Rainbow rooms international.
After attending a hair show, he became aware of Trichocare and felt that learning Trichology would give him the knowledge to meet his clients' problems. He found that as his clients aged alongside himself, their needs and concerns changed.
He thinks that having a background in hairdressing is an advantage for trichologists and loves the balance between the emotional clinic sessions and the upbeat days in the salon.
He outlines the importance for hairdressers and trichologists to have a network of specialists to refer clients to, including mental health workers and nutritionists, , so that they can work together to create a good outcome.

How hair loss can affect your body image
This episode explores how body image can be affected by changes in your hair, and why it's important to seek help from a professional as early as possible.
Sarah Grant is an image consultant and NLP practitioner.
She has worked with cancer charity look good feel better, to help and support ladies going through treatment.
She helps people find their best colours when shopping for clothes, and identifies their wardrobe personality, but she says its not always about the clothes. Your internal dialogue can be just as influential on the way you perceive your body. Internal conflicts and limiting beliefs can impact your confidence for years.
We look at how hair colour and texture can change as you age, along with skin tone and complexion. Many ladies experience fine or thinning hair, especially as they get older.
Just as you may change your hair colour slightly with the changing of the seasons, you might need to think about changing your hair colour, and the colours that you wear, depending on the season of your life.

In 2017 she was diagnosed with a very rare, aggressive breast cancer and had a double mastectomy. She lost her hair during chemo, but it grew back again.

Despite all this, she met the love of her life and is due to get married, and just as she found happiness, she started to lose her hair!
Her hair was shedding drastically and showering was a traumatic experience.
She describes how she learned to love herself and change her mindset to be mentally supportive of herself instead of being hard on herself.
She shares how once she started to talk about her hair loss, she found that she was not alone and wants to share her story to normalise female hair loss and help others.

PTSD induced hair loss ~ The road to recovery
Julie Wilcox-Jones had just moved to South Africa when her house burnt down in a fire storm that wiped out over 700 homes over three days.
Her and her family lost everything. She was in shock and afterwards she had panic attacks, and didn't want to go out and socialise.
As her life slowly started to return to normal, she noticed that her hair began to come out in handfuls, her hairline was receding and her scalp was becoming visible. Losing her hair really knocked her confidence.
She has a background in clinical trials for medicines related to gut health, and believes that our gut health and diet have a huge impact on our hair health as well as our overall health.
Following her traumatic experience, she started to take collagen, as recommended by her hairdresser at the time, who had kindly invited victims of the fire to come to the salon to get their hair washed and blowdried.
She describes her recovery as being like a phoenix rising from the fire, as a new, stronger person.

Losing hair after cancer treatment ~ finding your 'new normal'.
Ania Kasprzak shares her story of her ten month long fight with triple negative breast cancer- one of the most aggressive types!
And yet despite this, and her previous heart attack, or maybe because of these, she believes in the power of positive energy and community.
She says that following her cancer treatment, one of the most emotionally difficult moments for her was when her hair started to come out in handfuls.
She describes her experience with no hair as a mainly positive one, with people being nicer to her, and sharing their own stories with her. She didn't feel that wigs were for her, and so she went around bald or sometimes wore a hat, if it was cold!
We explore how beating cancer can feel like just the beginning, and how there can be a huge journey of recovery after, where life is slightly different and you have to find a new routine, including filling your time which was taken up with hours and hours of treatment.
She also talks about how waiting for her hair to grow back in was torturously slow and a very emotional time for her.
Whilst looking for something positive to fill her time, she took a stained glass course with Kent Adult Education. She took inspiration from the stained glass windows of her childhood catholic church, and started making angels, using recycled materials to help create them.
She finds this therapeutic, and in this way is managing to touch the hearts of many and spread her positivity and love.

DHT & ANDROGENETIC ALOPECIA
Adeeba Aqeel loves helping people, she is a self care and personal development blogger, and also works as a liaison for a University, helping foreign & international students settle in.
She enjoys helping people achieve their dreams and stresses that work isn't everything, encouraging people to set goals in all aspects of their lives.
Adeeba started to notice her hair thinning when she was a teenager, which had a large effect on her confidence, and she struggled to find answers as to why this was happening.
Eventually, she was diagnosed with having a sensitivity to Dihydrotestosterone, the androgen hormone, which was likely set off due to the changes in hormones around puberty.
Topical treatments were not effective, as this condition causes the hair follicle to shrink and eventually miniaturise.
She practices self love and acceptance, which has helped her to love herself more regardless of her hair.

COMING TO TERMS WITH HAIR LOSS
This episode has two different foci:
Firstly, I talk to Ali Hollands on how therapies such as solution based hypnotherapy can help people deal with physical changes in their appearance, such as hair loss.
Second, we also discuss her shaving her shaving her head on her wedding day!
Ali loves neuroscience, and educating people on how their brain works, helping them to build resources to manage their emotions and deal with difficult circumstances. She has embraced online working, moved to her dream house in the country, and can help people from anywhere in the world.
She also has a place in her heart for Macmillan cancer charity, and along with her husband, has raised over £3,000! - you can donate to their Justgiving page here:

ARE YOUR HAIR EXTENSIONS CAUSING ALOPECIA?
Patricia Nowakowski is a salon owner who has experienced hair loss for herself, and after noticing shedding, she thought she had found the perfect solution to increase density by adding hair extensions. But the hair extensions ended up causing more hair loss due to traction alopecia by putting strain on her already fragile fine hair!
She works with clients that have suffered from an array of problems including alopecia, cancer, fine, brittle hair and chemical damage from poorly executed chemical services.
We talk about her gentle hand tied hair extension method and how it is vitally important to find the best method for each client and their individual needs.
She recognises the impact that hair loss can have on self esteem and believes that your hair is the one accessory that you never take off!
She encourages stylists to specialise and invest in education.

TRICHOTILLOMANIA
Arin Halicki, a transformational life coach, describes her childhood as a 'chaotic' environment which she feels affected her nervous system and led her to be very sensitive.
She has lived with trichotillomania since she started pulling out her eyelashes at just six years old!
After her high pressure job in the corporate world led to her suffering from high functioning depression, she left that behind to build a career as an entrepreneur, and is now a Kundalini yoga practitioner.
We talk about her condition, her road to recovery and how this has had an impact on her personal relationships and self image.
She describes feeling 'less of a woman' for not having a full head of hair, and how treating yourself with love and compassion can help you forgive and accept yourself. Building trust in yourself is the first step in shifting the pattern and changing the relationship with yourself.

'Its the doctor's job to treat your cancer and my job to help you look good whilst doing it'
Having experienced cancer herself, she can empathise with her clients and work with others taking a sensitive approach.

THE POWER OF HAIR
Robert Masciave has a great history of competition and Avant Garde hairdressing work, inspired by historical figures such as Marie Antoinette, which has made him no stranger to cutting wigs. He also has a long history of working with clients experiencing alopecia.
He shares his knowledge and expertise on what to look for in a wig, the differences in quality and material, and why you should look at a wig as an investment rather than an expense.
'You cannot put a value on how you feel'
Robert takes great pleasure in making people look and feel the best they can. He also enjoys running a salon team, and recognises the importance in investing in staff and their development.
He also founded Eblade scissors, a revolutionary scissor to help perfect the craft of cutting hair whilst also reducing the risk of RSI.

HAIR LOSS AND THE LAW OF ATTRACTION
Jacqueline Rhule began to experience alopecia areata in her 20s, triggered by stress.
This forced her to re-evaluate her nutrition, and how she was looking after herself and her body. She looked into natural therapies, complimentary therapies and how she manages stress.
She had previously placed great emphasis on her hair being part of her beauty, and has had to work on her self love.
Accepting her hair loss has not always been easy, but it has been a positive journey.
After she made the tough decision to shave her head 18 years ago, she has never looked back and now describes herself as a 'shaven headed goddess'.
She is now a life coach and is happy to have found an authentic way to help people. She encourages them to look at their mindset, clearing out any negative thought patterns and take inspired action. Jacqueline believes that the law of attraction hinges on what you think, what you believe and how you see yourself.

HAIR LOSS EDUCATION
Krysia West established the Postiche Academy in 2020, after experiencing hair loss herself, she is passionate about hair and hair loss, and wanted to provide hair loss training for other stylists and hair professionals.
She recognised that there was little training for hairdressers and barbers on how to consult with clients on hair loss, and, after studying trichology, she wanted others to become an asset to their workplace by developing knowledge in this area.
As more and more clients are coming into the salon with hair loss and scalp problems, early recognition and referral could lead to prevention and will definitely give the best possible outcome for anyone experiencing hair loss.
We discuss a holistic approach to hairdressing, being able to care for and nurture our clients and who to collaborate with to build a network of professionals for support and guidance.

WHERE DOES YOUR HAIR COME FROM?
Melanie Kirk from Arkitect Hair extension academy shares her incredible knowledge on hair extensions and where the hair comes from.
Melanie is in her own words totally obsessed with all things hair and hair extensions!
Having experienced hair loss herself, and working in the hair extensions business, she is passionate about ensuring that the hair she uses has been donated freely, going so far as to even visiting the source directly to ensure that there was a fair gain for the donors.
She is spreading awareness of the dark side of the industry, and explains the importance of ensuring that hair is not being collected in an unsustainable or immoral way.
Hair extensions are a $56.7 billion industry, and we have a responsibility as the consumer to support ethical trade practices- there are over 20,000 donations a day in India alone.
we discuss some of the more unregulated areas of the hair we are buying, such as the country of origin, and correct labelling and descriptions.
Todays episode will have you reflecting on the impact that consumerism can have around the world.
She also explains how there are 37 different types of hair extension methods, and how to ensure you are learning the correct methods for your business and target demographic.
Melanie also talks about how she can support your business, including aftercare following attendance of a course and how important this is.

HOLISTIC APPROACH TO HAIR LOSS
Heather Greene talks about taking a more holistic approach to hairdressing, after finding that using hair products all day caused sensitivity to her skin and hands, and she started to explore making a switch to more natural brands.
What's in a product?
We discuss 'clean' haircare products and how you can limit exposure to certain toxins, your 'toxic burden' by choosing better quality products for you and your clients, and being conscious of chemical services.
We also talk about finding more fulfilment within your career, more effective marketing strategies and how to work smarter not harder.

LIONS BARBER COLLECTIVE
In 2014, Tom Chapman lost a friend to suicide.
In 2015, He founded the Lions Barber Collective.
The charity was set up in a bid to help the prevention of suicide.
His aim was to create a safe space to provide a vital source of mental health support facilitated by barbers across the country.
Barbers are trained to recognise signs and symptoms of mental health, and know what to do if someone opens up to them.
We talk about the importance of listening and talking to someone, and how to know when and where to refer clients for help.
Tom is passionate that clients be regarded holistically; they are not just marketing tools, and their wellbeing is important.
Tom shares his own experiences and we discuss how much of a barber's or hairdresser's role is already that of a therapist, that 'Familiar stranger' that we share so much with, including our thoughts, feelings and who we go through all our major life events with.
He hopes to create an offloading service for hairdressers, barbers and therapists where they can talk through any problems or worries they have and unload from a tough workday.

WORKING TOGETHER
Jane Mayhead of the Maylan clinic has been practicing trichology for over 20 years.
This week we look at why it may be beneficial for trichologists to work closely with salons and medical professionals to ensure support is provided for early signs of hair loss.
Are you a hairdresser? what is your approach if you notice a client has bald patches or their hair is thinning?
We discuss the importance of the correct approach, and how continual professional development and ongoing education are essential to make sure you are at the top of your game, including product knowledge and building a network of professional support.
Do you know what is in your hair products and what they do?
Jane also explains her DNA testing service, which can tell you if certain hairloss products, such as minoxidil are likely to work for you.
