A new kind of leadership is emerging and this generation is reshaping it with empathy, cooperation, and authenticity. In this episode, Dr. Heather Penny sits down with Dr. Lisa Smith, professor at Pepperdine and author of Hammer & Fire, to explore how young leaders are redefining what it means to lead well.

Lisa shares why today’s young adults see leadership as a shared enterprise, how they value every voice at the table, and why being seen as a whole person matters more than ever. They’re skeptical of traditional authority, but when they find a leader they can trust, they show up with their whole heart.

Together, they discuss the invitation for parents, mentors, and leaders to slow down, ask better questions, and come alongside rather than fix. From navigating constant public pressure to learning courageous conversations and intelligent risk-taking, this episode highlights the challenges and the strengths of shaping the next generation.

Take a breath, stay curious, and discover what this rising generation is teaching all of us about leadership.

As the series on relationships and this season of The Life Your Made For wraps up, join Audrey Kostka and Dr. Heather Penny as they talk about how life long relationships lead to amazing things!

In The Life You’re Made For, Heather talk about the “tire swing”—those moments that remind us of simple joy.

Sometimes people forget what brings them life. They get so caught up in doing that they forget how to be. Everyone has to shut down the mind chatter to really ask: What makes me feel peaceful? What brings me joy?

Audrey shared this so beautifully in this conversation. When she slowed down, clarity came. And with clarity came permission—the freedom to live life the way she was designed to. No more cramming life full to prove her worth. Just presence, peace, and the joy of missing out (JOMO).

Enjoy Heather’s E-Course (normally $97) for free! Heather shares the code in the podcast. The Life You’re Made For E-Course is available at www.heatherpenny.com.

If you’ve ever felt your friendships shift as life changes—like when your kids leave the nest, your schedule empties (or overflows), or you crave connection beyond surface-level chats—this episode will speak to you deeply. For this podcast conversation, we turn the tables with Kelley Gray interviewing Heather. It is a warm, honest conversation about adult friendships: the longing for deeper bonds, the awkwardness of reaching out, and the vulnerability of naming what you need. We talk about “friendship shopping,” the courage to say “I’m lonely,” and how to create space for relationships that feel mutual, spiritual, and real. Whether you’re navigating grief, a season of transition, or simply trying to figure out who your people are now, this episode is like a heart-to-heart with a trusted friend. You’ll hear about the power of showing up—sometimes with a meal, sometimes with silence, and sometimes just with presence. We’ll unpack how crises can either rupture or deepen relationships and how honesty, intention, and grace can carry friendships through hard seasons. If you’ve ever felt shame around changing connections or wondered how to “date” new friends as an adult, this episode gives you language, permission, and hope. Tune in for encouragement, laughter, and wisdom. You’re not alone in this, and your next meaningful friendship might be one brave conversation away.

In part 2 of It’s All About Relationships, Heather and Darren explore what makes a relationship truly sacred—not because it’s perfect or forever, but because it meets us at just the right moment in our lives. When a connection endures through changing seasons, it becomes something rare and deeply meaningful.

We ask a question that keeps guiding us back to the heart of connection: Does the person across from me feel cared for, seen, and heard? From small gestures like remembering the little things, to being present during someone’s busy grind, we unpack how real relationships grow.

Join us as we talk about what it means to create safe spaces, honor each other’s stories, and walk together even when we’re different. Relationships aren’t static—they're alive, messy, and full of potential.

If this resonates, we invite you to listen in—and maybe even reach out to someone you care about this week. Ask a deeper question. Be curious. Share this episode. It might just spark the connection you both need.

Who is one of your favorite people to talk with? I had a fun conversation about good guides with one of my all-time favorite people, my husband, Darren Penny. You’ll hear us discuss the role of guides in our lives—how to seek them, how to be one, and how to navigate life with humility, courage, connection and vulnerability. Through personal stories, like Darren’s search for guidance in the absence of a father, we explore the deep need for relational wisdom during seasons of vulnerability.

We talk about how good guides meet us where we are, create safe spaces for growth, and remind us that being unfinished doesn’t disqualify us—it makes us ready. Whether you’re seeking direction or becoming someone others can trust, this conversation invites you to take the risk, know yourself, and walk the journey with others. I hope you will be encouraged to embrace your limitations, resist isolation, and choose human connection and vulnerability over quick fixes.

If you like what you hear, pick up a copy of my book Grace Space where I dive deeper into being a person that creates safe spaces for growth.

Do you have a friendship that spans many seasons and plot twists of your life? Marriage, children, parenting, launching kids, career intersections, faith. You know, all the biggies. Someone you've had the privilege of being up close and personal with through the highs and lows. Alyssa Gluck is that person in my life. Alyssa is a credentialed teacher, holds a graduate degree in leadership, and works as an educational specialist for homeschool families.

In our conversation, we reflect on how life doesn’t take a straight path. It often has unexpected twists and turns. Plot twists, as a previous guest put it. When you have been thrown for a loop, a Good Guide coming along at just the right time is a gift. But isolation is a dangerous reaction in the middle of these plot twists. The very thing you need is a sage presence offering you a safe place to land and sort out where to go next. When the false belief “I have to do life on my own” gets replaced with the true belief “I get to reach out to a loving presence,” it makes all the difference. I love Alyssa's guidance for when a guide is no longer a good fit for where you want to go.

Listen in and learn what type of guidance you need. Perhaps you'll be sparked to be a good guide for someone in the spaces you live and lead.

Do you have a person in your life that you can say anything to with zero filter, and you know you will be understood? Kelley Gray is this type of person. She listens compassionately and leaves her judgment at the door. All while offering valuable insight and discernment, guided by wisdom. That’s why I loved including her in my podcast series, Good Guides.

I have appreciated my friendship with Kelley over the years. We met when I needed some clear guidance. The direction I received from her stayed with me for years. It was her ability to empower me to lean into what my gut was whispering to me that made it a powerful connection.

And don’t we all need good guides during vulnerable times?

Kelley has the ability to shed light on a situation while affirming that your True Self gets to show up well. This makes her stand out as a Good Guide. I trust her because she is experienced in counseling, has a highly successful practice, is well-read and highly intelligent, but mostly because she has a good heart and lives out what she teaches.

Listen in to this conversation as I share some of my personal experience in getting guidance from her years ago. Kelley has the ability to make hard topics easy to discuss and understand. The takeaways she shares are invaluable. Her words will empower you to stay connected to your body, listen to your intuition, be guided by wisdom, and take the steps you need to go after the life only you are made for.

Do you have a friend that you may not speak to for months or even years, but when you do talk, it’s like you pick up right where you left off? That’s how it is with my good friend Michelle Riddell. She knows the power of presence, and she has been a welcome presence in my life. Michelle also has a reputation as a leader for inspiring and empowering people working on executive teams in global marketing organizations. What I admire most is her personal vision statement, ”I lead my life honorably with boldness to unleash the potential in people and organizations for the betterment of society”. Isn’t that powerful?

I believe you will appreciate this conversation as much as I did. Michelle’s ability to show up fully present is such a gift. I hope you will feel encouraged to find guides that truly fit who you are and where you are trying to go. You’ll hear her share about the good guides in her life and even those that weren’t so good. But you’ll appreciate how she has learned the power of presence from all of it.

When I announced that I'd be sharing my word for the year 2025, I asked you all to share what words you have chosen. Thank you for sharing them with me! I am so inspired by your intentional growth. I have heard words like...

  • Freedom
  • Love
  • Wisdom
  • Courage
  • Focus
  • Presence
  • Power
  • Faith
  • Amplify
  • Results
  • Mission
  • Grow
  • Live
  • Be

…and even one who wants to keep it private because they are too sacred and personal to share their word out loud.

What a powerful year each individual will have with words like these! I can’t wait to follow up and hear what they learn from their words at the end of the year.

In this podcast, I share what my past words have taught me along with my word for the year 2025. Because I know how choosing a word for the year keeps me focused and guides me. But what I really like about choosing a my word for the year… it’s simple. It’s the simplest way I know to live intentionally. And when you align with who you want to be, this is the direction you grow. It has been exciting to have watched this practice attract exactly the right people, guides, opportunities, and experiences needed to learn and grow.

So, find your focus, stay curious, and listen to this podcast about how my word for the year influenced me last year and why I chose my new word for this year.

When was the last time you got some great guidance? Maybe you were starting a new business or sorting out a relationship. But the counsel you received shifted it all in a positive direction and helped you see things dramatically different. This is what Good Guides can do for us. They are people who are further along the journey than you, but have something to offer that you don’t have at the moment— to see things differently or explore new possibilities that encourage you to take new risks and venture out in new ways. They help you level up in your life.

That’s why I want to share with you a new podcast series on Good Guides. You’ll hear from people who I know and respect who have both offered guidance and been on the receiving end of it. But what I have come to believe is that we can’t get to new levels in life without good guidance along the way. In the first episode, you’ll hear me share what Good Guides have meant to me and how it has been so critical to my development. So, join us as we discuss what makes a good guide and some important counsel people have received that significantly impacted their lives. Who knows, maybe it will impact yours too!

How do you feel about your creative abilities? Are you someone who sees yourself as creative, not creative at all, or have you never really thought about it? What does creativity have to do with being part of the story of humanity? I wanted to speak to my friend Jason Squires about all of this.

Jason is a coach who works with leaders who create. Starting in the music industry, Jason has been teaching, singing, and traveling around the United States supporting music leaders. This eventually led him to starting a coaching business for creative leadership. But I especially love how he views creativity because, much like me, he believes everyone has the innate potential to be creative. And the beliefs he holds around humanity’s ability to create are inspiring.

We also dove deep into the content from my book, Grace Space, which Jason endorsed!

Whether you see yourself as creative or not, join us as we discuss the importance around creativity and how it can look uniquely in every type of person. This is a conversation around the beliefs we hold, how some change and others ground us, as well as the power of living with a commitment to creativity no matter what line of work you are in.

Jason Squires is a worship leader, songwriter, and storyteller. Jason travels nationally leading worship and teaching at conferences. Along with being an artist, Jason is the Director of The Creative Launch which is an organization designed to help creatives have the tools to thrive. Jason does that by one on one coaching. Jason’s passion is leading people to Jesus through creativity and inspiring creatives to reach their full potential. Everyone believes in something. Like your diet affects your body, your beliefs affect in your mind and heart. You are what you believe. The hope is that as we evolve and mature, we learn to evaluate what we believe and how we got there. More importantly, are there any beliefs we have outgrown or perhaps are no longer serving us? In fact, in the work I do, I see how many beliefs are limiting us. This is why I want to talk about our beliefs. We are wrapping up our Crossroads podcast series and looking ahead to a new series on Beliefs. So I wanted to re-release my conversation with Sharon McMahon from last Fall. Why? First of all, because election season is right around the corner and we need her voice ringing loud and clear. Second, because this conversation is such a great set up to talk about Beliefs and how they influence us to go after the life we are made for.

Not to mention that when Sharon and I last talked, neither of us had released our new books. And boy is she having a moment! The Small and the Mighty has opened powerful conversations. Sharon is stepping into political arenas and government spaces like no one else. Which is truly inspiring. In addition, it was in this conversation that I realized I wanted Sharon to endorse my book–Grace Space–which she so graciously agreed to. I am so honored to be associated with her.

The world desperately needs Sharon McMahon’s transparency about aligning her beliefs with her higher calling. So her words are timely. Stepping into the life you are made for requires intentionality, focus, and being ok with limitations. She talks candidly about the challenges of distractions and the importance of being confident in your strengths—as well as your limitations. Plus you’ll hear how relationships are important for staying balanced. So, I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did—even for a second time!

Including how her beliefs shifted during our time as well as the way she helps her clients latch onto true beliefs instead of false beliefs. This week I talk with my good friend Jennifer Morton about having grace for the journey as you lead others and yourself. For Jennifer, leading others is about acting as a rudder rather than a captain, supporting and guiding those in our care as they become everything they are made to be. Jennifer is another amazing endorser of my book and someone who truly exhibits grace space in her life and work as CEO of the Association of Golf Merchandisers (AGM). We dive deep into responding vs reacting, but also discuss how curiosity is truly the thread that goes through all seven practices of Grace Space.

This week my dear friend, Laura Coostona and I unpack the idea of responding vs reacting when facing conflict or tension. When we inevitably experience conflict in our teams or relationships, the temptation for many of us is to react. We go on the defense, or sometimes even the offense. But what if we paused?... Pausing gives us the chance to have a measured response and give grace to the person we're having challenges with. Laura and I talk about how the seven practices in my book, Grace Space, really lean on that pause. Listen in as we give you some practical language to use when facing tensions that require heavy doses of grace for everyone involved. Including yourself!

Laura Cootsona operates a collaborative consulting firm called Good|Well Consulting. Laura is a founding board member of the Camp Fire Collaborative and lives in Chico, CA with her husband and two daughters. You can find Laura on LinkedIn.

This week I have a deep and truly meaningful conversation with Mike Liguori about reaching for grace in hard times. Mike shares about his experience during and after serving our country in the armed forces. Whether you have served or not, Mike's perspective will hit you like a breath of fresh air. Everyone will benefit form his insight on offering ourselves grace and love when facing unimaginable challenges. This conversation is also meaningful to me because my husband, brother, father, and uncle all served in the military. So I've seen the unique challenges those who serve can face. But I have to offer a trigger warning as Mike does discuss PTSD and Suicidal Ideation.

Over the last few months, I have learned that patience, presence, and slowing down are all interconnected. AND they're all connected to clarity, confidence, and courage. Let me tell you, it made for a much more enjoyable and fulfilling time for everyone involved. When you are able to show up rested and filled up, that is when you show up as your best self. I want to share with you a powerful exercise I lead people through on my retreats and corporate events called Inviting and Rejecting. What you invite in to your mind and heart makes a big difference in how you live. Equally, what you reject helps you create intentional spaces that block out the things you don't want to be part of your life. And more importantly, when you name it out loud, you give power to what you're inviting in! You have a choice with how you show up in the world. And what spaces you create for yourself and others.  I share  few examples of how this has played out for my clients and I get vulnerable about times when this tool was invaluable for me personally! It's a powerful tool for so many contexts. So take a listen and then think about what you are inviting and rejecting in your life. Then say it out loud!

On this week’s podcast l interview Scott Schimmel, author of the book Critical Foundations, about how we can help encourage young people to find a meaningful life. In this world of constant comparison, what does a meaningful life look like? So many young people are in a state of survival and this is often a mirror of the adults in their lives. How can we model a meaningful life so that the young people around us know what it looks like? The secret might be in sharing our successes and failures openly and honestly.

Do you ever feel like it's too late to live the life you were made for? Recently I spoke about aging with my new friend Stephanie Nelson, host of the Pivotal People Podcast. We kept circling around the idea of Aging vs Saging. Our culture likes to tell us that getting older means it's all down hill from here. But, what if we considered another approach to aging? What if we valued how the years are turning us into sages?  Could we bring our experience and wisdom to bear to lift people up? Everyone has a dream and purpose. How can we become pivotal people in others' lives to help them live the life they were made for?

May you doubt a thousand things but never that.
Let it steady you and guide you home instantly.

Do not search for my voice (or perhaps the voice you might wish I had)
when lies disguise themselves and try to disguise you as well.

But look for yours alone, not far off on some unreachable island
or locked behind a certain threshold.

There is a strength that begins in the dust you were made from and branches out broader than your body
for you to run freely in

or sit, or lie down in—
whatever you know it’s meant for.

Copyright CJ Casciotta.A Soft VoiceI hope you develop a soft voice.
While this comes naturally to some
For others it is learned, or else it is forced.

For many, we must unlearn the clanging of pots and pans,
The fist punching at airwaves,
The curriculum that taught us to annex
Decibels and frequencies
From gym class to calls with customer service.

Only when a voice realizes it needn’t try to breathe under water
Does it rise to the level of sunlight
Branded by an ancient silence, a fiery strength.

As we approach a year of contending with COVID-19, this topic is especially poignant as we discuss how to manage frustration, disappointment, and interacting with others - and ourselves - with grace.

Questions to Think About:

1) How can you bring Grace Space into your daily life? Do you need to do less and not more? How can you be fully present in the lives of your spouse, children, and those most important to you?
2) As a leader in your world  - whether it's at work or as a parent - how can you communicate Grace Space to those around you?
Staying curious is one way to grow in Grace Space. How can you tie these two principles together in your life for continued growth?

Are there some things that you want to say to certain people but you hold back?
While you can't say anything and everything you want, you can speak truth and you are allowed to defend yourself.
Listen to Dr. Heather Penny as she explains when you should speak out, the importance of your trust level, and why it's okay to not play by everyone's rules.

Questions to Think About:
1) Are there certain relationships in your life that bring more confusion than peace? Do they require that you play by their rules all the time? What are some ways that you can respond and not react in these situations?
2) Think about the people closest to you or that you interact with the most. Are you placing some of them at a level 10 with your trust and time when they should be a 2? Are there some that are a 2 and you need to move past your fear and bring them up to an 8 to create trust, accountability, and increase curiosity in your life?
