The Bridging Chicago Podcast allows our guests to demonstrate their skills and experience, share their business objectives and perspectives, and engage with listeners. Our goal is to connect our listening community with business leaders in and around the Chicago area by discussing how our guests got to their current positions.

Dan Futrell is a Chicago transplant, having lived on both the east and west coasts and is now settled with his family in the Midwest. A Pat Tillman scholar, Dan now leads the nonprofit helping to provide educational opportunities for veterans, which is headquartered in Chicago. Dan and his team at Polymath University are looking to change how people approach higher ed and making it more accessible to everyone. Marrying life and professional experience with classroom learning, Polymath hopes to create more well-rounded students who are ready to contribute to any field. Dan and his team are furthering education as a resource and making it less daunting for others.

Season 7 kicks off with an exciting guest who’s name you may already know, Walter Mendenhall! Walter is a Chicago product, growing up in and around the city and taking his football talents to UIUC. Cheryl Hamilton-Hill is the CEO of Lincoln Park Community Services, an organization that understands that doing good things for good people is important, but doing it in a way that sets them up to allow themselves and their families succeed is better. LPCS does not look at a moment in someones life and identify them by that moment, but they understand that moments aren’t forever, and given the chance, people can lift themselves out of any moment. Her teams desire to walk alongside the people they serve and provide resources that can change lives is truly inspiring. Cheryl shares about the difference housing and education makes for people and what they are doing to tackle these specific needs. This episode features Rosie Drumgoole, now their Chief Executive Officer, who shares not only her story, but how that connects to Chicago and the mission of Chicago Cares. Rosie also shares about how the moments of chemistry with the neighborhoods and people of the city fuel her passion and remind the entire team of what is most important: relationships and resources. Chicago Cares newest program, the Power of Service Training Program, is a program developed out of what the organization has learned with their community partners and neighborhoods. Joe Amari returns to host Michael Odongo, founder and CEO of the Angaza Center, which aims to provide resources to children in Africa, to equip them to get the education they need to change their futures. Growing up in Kenya, Michael came to the U.S. to continue his education, doing his post-grad work in IT and began working in the field. Now, as a resident of the Chicago area, Michael has continued his passion for education and ensuring that he helped to provide a ladder for others to climb as well. Though the challenges are real, and sometimes loom large, Michael knew that providing more technical literacy to more people can open a new world of opportunity for every person. Michael and the Angaza Center continue to do their work, impacting lives both in here and abroad.
As the founder of The Laughing Academy, Kim Greene Hiller has quite the pedigree when it comes to improv comedy, and her roots run deep in Chicago. Sharing a stage with some of Chicago’s most well known actors, Kim knew early on that her path would look different than that of those who’s names you see on marquees in New York or Los Angeles. Her desire to either be an actress or a teacher has come full-circle, and brought her to The Laughing Academy, where she is teaching people of all ages more lessons than just how to act on a stage. The lessons learned have helped with youth dealing with bullying and adults who need to become more comfortable with public speaking. The benefits of improv run deep, and after hearing this episode, you may even want to try out your acting chops!
Dr. Gordon Siegel is an accomplished ENT doctor who, like many of us, saw the way that the Covid-19 pandemic was changing the world and saw an opportunity to help others make a shift. Gordy, as he’s known by his friends, then took a leap and started SpaceShifts a company dedicated to helping people and businesses find open office space that they can use. With many companies downsizing the number of employees using the office spaces, sharing these spaces allows those who are not ready to rent out a full office have a space to do business. While Dr. Siegel is still practicing medicine, SpaceShifts is something that he feels can help Chicago continue to be the center of business and innovation.

Dave Thomas, the Director of the Flexible Housing Pool, a program of the AIDS Foundation Chicago, joins the podcast to share about the big things FHP is doing to help the chronically un-housed people of the City of Chicago. FHP is looking to break the cycle of homelessness, while reducing costs to the public systems, creating a program that will be better for our city and its citizens. Maria Castro answered a call from a friend who knew a woman who was in need of some essentials and immediately wanted to come to the rescue. Little did she know that this one act of kindness would turn into an organization that is providing thousands of purses filled with essentials and notes of love to women who are in the most need in our communities. Jeffery Leving is a Chicago-based attorney who truly knows the heartbeat of the city. Born on the southeast side, Jeffery spent his childhood in the neighborhoods before heading south to attend college. Coming back to the city, he knew that he wanted to make a difference for the people of Chicago and its future. After working to defend those who needed someone in their corner, Jeffery saw the need for someone to represent dads who were trying exercise their right to spend time with their children. 100 years ago, Shriners Children’s Chicago started as an organization with the hope of standing in the health care gap for children who had been previously overlooked. The first Shriners Hospital opened its doors on September 16, 1922 and has been providing care to these children all over the country since. In these 100 years, they have helped over 1.5 million children with various needs become healthy, happy children. Today, the entire organization is full of people who continue this care and the mission to provide care for any child, regardless of their guardian’s ability to pay. On this Part 2 of our discussion with Jim and Tinamarie from Diveheart, we take a deep dive into the history and mission behind Diveheart’s initiative to help individuals “imagine the possibilities.” The idea to form Diveheart rose to the surface over time. Founder Jim took scuba diving in college on a whim, and his dives gave him what he now calls the “astronaut moment”—teaching him that when you remove external triggers and enter exploration in weightlessness, scuba diving provides the tools to pursue and tackle other challenges in life. Jim and Tinamarie discuss how Diveheart’s programs show disabled peoples or participants recovering from injury how broad the horizon really is by focusing on each participant’s abilities and creating connections through the diving support network. Years later, today Diveheart is at the forefront of providing safe scuba opportunities for disabled and injured peoples, and breathing life into new opportunities for the greater Chicagoland community.

Dr. Cynthia Tucker has spent her whole life and work in Chicago and has fond memories of growing up on the city’s south-side. Almost 17 years ago she began working with the AIDS Foundation Chicago and is continuing the work to help women navigate and get access to care, find housing that works for their families and give them access to important social services. In part II of our conversation with Brendan Cournane, we learn about what motivated him to run his first marathon and what it was like to run in Antarctica. Stephanie Mercado understands the importance of quality healthcare in the US and is passionate about ensuring healthcare professionals have the tools they need to provide quality care for all. Stephanie grew up in small town Illinois, but always found herself attracted to the “big city,” and eventually moved to Chicago to study at Columbia College Chicago. Stephanie now serves as the National Association for Healthcare Quality’s CEO and Executive Director, where she has helped grow the organization by more than 50%, extending the associations reach and ability to fight for consistent quality in healthcare.
Growing up in Oak Lawn, Nancy Hughes Moyer learned from a very early age the importance of family and lifting others up who may not be as blessed as she was. As its Marketing and Communications Manager, she furthers NKFI's mission to improve the health and well-being of people in risk of or affected by kidney disease through prevention, education and empowerment.
As a mother, personal trainer, and a director in a non-profit organization, Ayesha Akhtar believes that everything you do in life is a stepping stone for something greater. Being the Director of Education at the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago, Ayesha’s story is sure to move you, as she is a strong advocate for societal collaboration, and the idea of working together to achieve the greater good. Initially pursuing a career in accounting, Ayesha had an epiphany after reading the book “The Alchemist”, and realized she had instead been longing for more a fulfilling career that made a larger societal impact. Following her moral compass, she began working towards a path that was focused on making a difference by improving the health of communities through education and advocacy. Since 2011, Ayesha has been an educator with the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to the welfare of people with epilepsy. The Foundation provides free case management, education and advocacy services to people living with epilepsy, including their families and support system. As the Director of Education, she manages seizure first aid training for schools and communities in 43 counties of Illinois. She has presented to schools, social service agencies, law firms, and the Chicago Police Department. She recently worked on the successful passing of the Seizure Smart School Act, which was signed into law in July 2019, and makes this first aid training mandatory in all public schools in Illinois.

In 1990, he began working for Equity Office Properties Trust, where he was mentored by the firm’s founder, Sam Zell, an iconic investor for real estate related businesses. Eventually becoming the CEO of Equity Office Properties Trust, Kincaid tapped into his creative side and also became the Founder and President of the BeCause Foundation, an organization that creates different forms of social advocacy media. Having worked in a variety of different spaces, one thing that he believed each place needed was a healthier working environment. This concept led him to becoming the Founder and CEO of Sagegreenlife, a company that designs and manufactures living green walls. We conclude Teachers Appreciation Month with a professor who uses both Hip Hop music and theory as an invitation for her students to think of the world around them more critically. Nathan Ciulla sits down with Dr. Lisa Calvente to discuss how growing up during the birth of Hip Hop inspired her to become a professor and a performance artist. She double majored in philosophy and sociology at City University of New York, Brooklyn College (CUNY), where she took the theory and critical analytics and intersected with Hip Hop music to better analyze culture and society. She would use the tools gained at CUNY and spread them through the world of the New York Hip Hop scene and as a graduate student at the University of North Carolina at Capel Hill, where she received both her M.A. and PhD. After graduation, not only did she begin to teach at various universities, but continued using Hip Hop and philosophy understandings in the classroom, and in countless journal articles and essays. Dr. Calvente also published a book in 2016 called Imprints of Revolution: Visual Representations of Resistance, and has directed many plays around the topic of mass incarceration.
Continuing Teachers Appreciation Month, Savannah Rountree sits down with Gerardo Rodriguez, a 5th and 6th grade science teacher at Darwin Elementary. Raised in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood in Chicago, Rodriguez attended Chicago Public School from elementary to high school. During his junior year of high school, Rodriguez found himself aiding other students and realizing he had a passion for teaching others about science and math. Graduating from the University of Illinois at Chicago, he majored in Urban Education and was mentored by Dr. Edward Podsiadlik, one of Bridging Chicago’s previous guests! He took his newly gained experience and knowledge from his time at UIC to develop his teaching style and overall approach. As a second year teacher, he implements mediation and peace circles to his classroom, and is also a mentor for the Darwin Robotics Club.
Kicking off Teachers Appreciation Month, Savannah Rountree sits down with Dr. Edward Podsiadlik, author of Anecdotes and Afterthoughts: Literature as a Teacher’s Curriculum, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Podsiadlik recalls his passion for education beginning as a page for the Chicago Public Library and its Preschool Storytime program, to working over a decade for CPS and teaching future educators in higher education. Being a native of Chicago, Dr. Podsiadlik holds a B.A. in Elementary Education from St. Xavier University, and has obtained M.A. degrees in English Literature and Writing from Purdue University, and Educational Administration from St. Xavier University. He later received a Ph.D. in Curriculum Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Podsiadlik has been featured in several professional journals for his admiral teaching scholarship, and has spoken about his teaching values at countless professional presentations. On this episode of the podcast, Nathan Ciulla sits down with Michael Edwards, President and CEO of the Chicago Loop Alliance (CLA), an organization that aims to revitalize Chicago’s Loop to perpetuate the growth and development of its businesses and investments. As a native of Buffalo, New York, he attended Canisius College in his hometown where he received a BA in political science and history. After graduation, he went to the University of Pittsburgh where he earned a MA in Public Administration. He was also the former CEO and President of Downtown Spokane Partnership, and former president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership. Being constantly on the move, he found himself working in multiple cities in the US, aiming to improve their downtown areas through fun and creative communal activities, and by developing structural plans in order to create an organized, interconnected, and secure community. Working with CLA, he hopes to have people “think of the Loop beyond 9 to 5.”

After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a double major in Comparative Literature and French she found herself climbing the ranks at an insurance company for over a decade. Inspired by her mother, a nurse for over 50 years, Kim wanted to continue dedicating her life to service but in a new sector. She found herself at Cara Chicago, where she is guiding people to discover opportunities of employment and helping them rebuild their hope. Kim holds an MBA from the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business. Kim has served as a fellow for both Leadership Greater Chicago and American Marshall. She was a part of TEDxMidwest Emerging Leader as well as Bank of America Neighborhood Builder, and recently also served on Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s transition team.

A major contributor to the evolving landscape of musical theatre in Chicago, this week's podcast introduces Harmony France, the artistic director and founder of the first feminist musical theatre company, Firebrand Theatre. This Chicago-based company primarily focuses on creating more opportunities and roles for women in various areas of artistic production. Harmony is also a casting director at Bailiwick Chicago, a teacher at Actor’s Training Center, and an actress that has traveled the world with the Broadway National/International Tour of Sister Act. Passionate about her career, Dr. Nanos believes that her daring personality, desire to help others, and dynamic life experiences all led her to pursue social work. With these interests in mind, Dr. Nanos worked towards receiving her Ph.D. in Clinical Social Work from the Institute for Clinical Social Work in Chicago, and also obtained her masters in social work from Jane Addams, University of Illinois. She was hired as the youngest member to work with children who had been sexually abused in the Special Services Unit at Juvenile Court in Chicago’s Cook County. Starting her clinical career in 1987, Dr. Nanos’ primary focus was to work with children and families dealing with sexual abuse and neglect. With her involvement, she was able to gain a strong understanding in how to provide investigation, therapy, counseling, and other aiding services for the protection and safety of children, and the stabilization of families. As the Executive Director for Center for Law and Social work, Dr. Nanos also works with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services and specializes in adoption and guardianship for numerous families in Chicago. As a program of CLSW, Dr. Nanos also manages Porchlight Counseling Services, which offers free therapy sessions for students who have been sexually assaulted. In addition to this work, Dr. Nanos is also a professor at Loyola University, in the Masters of Social Work program. Dr. Nanos and CLSW consistently work towards their goal of “Promoting Families | Providing Hope | Protecting Lives”

Students aren’t the only ones back from holiday break. Joining us for our Back to School podcast special is our host Savannah’s own law professor, Spencer Waller. In the episode, Professor Waller describes his winding trajectory with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit (as a staff law clerk), to the U.S. Department of Justice (first as a trial attorney in the Foreign Commerce Section of the Antitrust Division and later as a special attorney in the Chicago Strike Force of the Criminal Division), to Freeborn and Peters in private practice. Years into his career, he caught the ‘teaching bug’ and decided to embark on the lengthy process of becoming a law professor. For those interested in teaching law, Professor Waller breaks down his process of getting there. He taught at Brooklyn Law School for 10 years before finally transitioning to Loyola University Chicago School of Law, where he’s been at since 2000. Professor Waller also serves as the Faculty Director of the Institute for Consumer Antitrust Studies. His passion for teaching and researching antitrust law really shines through.
In this episode, we will be exploring the murky waters of the unlicensed practice of law and the minefield it presents to the unwary. Our featured guest, Scott A. Kozlov, is a lawyer who investigates other lawyers (and those pretending to be lawyers) to promote and protect the integrity of the legal profession. You will hear how, in 2011, Scott assisted in writing a Supreme Court rule that effectively gave the Illinois Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission (ARDC) the power to safeguard against the unlicensed practice of law. Scott also discusses how, as Senior Counsel and the Director of Unauthorized Practice of Law Litigation for the ARDC, he examines, investigates, and when necessary prosecutes the misconduct of attorneys and attorney imposters.
A graduate of Valparaiso University School of Law and Eastern Illinois University, Scott’s career has taken him from being an investigator with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, to a court coordinator with the Circuit Court of Cook County, to an associate with general practice law firm in Arlington Heights, to an Assistant Public Guardian in Cook County, and finally to the ARDC. Scott is also an Adjunct Professor at Loyola University Chicago School of Law and teaches professional responsibility.
Scott has also served and continues to serve the legal community and the public by volunteering his time and knowledge with several legal organizations. In 2004, he chaired the Chicago Bar Association’s Government Service Committee. Since 2007, he has been the Chair of its Unauthorized Practice and Multidisciplinary Practice Committee. Since 2009, Scott has been appointed to the Illinois State Bar Association’s Task Force on the Unauthorized Practice of Law. In 2015 and in 2017, he was the Chair of the American Bar Association’s Unauthorized Practice of Law School, which trains attorneys on various aspects of investigating and prosecuting unauthorized practice of law. He also currently serves on the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Client Protection and is the Chair of the Northwest Suburban Bar Association’s Ethics Committee.
In addition to his involvement in the legal community, Scott was a nationally ranked competitive figure skater, and he still finds the time and energy to be a professional skating instructor, which he has done for over two decades for several suburban park districts.

Her passion for sustainability and green energy has led to her participation as an active member of the Urban Land Institute, ICSC International Council of Shopping Centers, and U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

Stan Nitzberg is Principal and the Executive Vice President of Mid-America Real Estate Corporation, the Midwest’s leading full-service retail real estate organization. He also serves on the Board of Directors for many philanthropic organizations, including the Metropolitan YMCA of Chicago, the Magnificent Mile Association, and the Chicago Loop Alliance. Mr. Nitzberg is also a past Director of the Chicago Police Foundation and the past President of The Magnificent Mile Charitable Foundation. In 2016, Stan was the recipient of Holsten Human Capital Development’s Community Sustainability Award for his two decades of support of affordable housing as a viable way of ending homelessness. He is also a six-time recipient of the Chicago Retail Broker of the Year Award.
Stan’s focus is on urban retail projects, having transacted leases for more than two million square feet of retail on North Michigan Avenue, Oak Street, State Street and North/Clybourn markets. He has also been directly involved in the closing of more than $2 billion of retail investment sale transactions, including properties on North Michigan Avenue and Oak Street.
