Eris Nyx, one of the founding members of the Drug User Liberation Front (DULF), spoke about drug user rights, harm reduction, and the criminalization of care on Thursday June 26th 2025 at 5pm in the SSMU Ballroom at McGill University in Montreal. The talk was organized as a fundraiser for the DULF founders' legal defence fund, and also included a discussion by a panel currently working in harm reduction in Montreal.DULF is a grassroots harm reduction organization based out of Vancouver BC's Downtown Eastside that pioneered a radical compassion club model to intervene in the toxic drug supply crisis, which has killed tens of thousands of poor and unhoused drug users across the country. In a fairly dramatic turn of political tides, the organizers of the compassion club, which had been tacitly permitted by the city and local police, were arrested and are now facing severe criminal charges, including the possibility of life in prison. Monday May 20, 2024: News on McGill seeking injunctionOn this week's show, we continue discussing the injunction that McGill University sought to have the pro-Palestinian encampment dismantled.We first hear a segment by Jules about the court decision to deny the injunction.Then, we have an interview with Irina Ceric, assistant law professor at the University of Windsor, conducted by Athina. They discuss the court decision and delve into some of the more technical details of injunctions.The final segment for this show is another one by Jules, dealing with the news that McGill will now be seeking an interlocutory injunction.

Vernon Buckley formed the Maytones in May Pen Jamaica in the 60s. The group took off when their song âMoney Worriesâ made it to the iconic Jamaican film âRockersâ soundtrack in 1979. Vernon Maytone continues to release music to this day and has toured the world and collaborated with such artists as Bedouin Soundclash. In this brief interview (to be continued at a later date) Howard Stretch Carr touches on their shared May Pen roots and Vernon updates us on his latest full album release that he wrote during the pandemic. The Mighty Diamonds are a sweet singing Jamaica trio who CKUT was fortunate enough to have performed at our 30th Anniversary and Pop Montrealâs Sweet 16. The tragic death of Tabby âDiamondâ Shaw followed shortly thereafter by bandmate Fitzroy âBunnyâ Simpson hit the reggae community hard. In commemoration we rebroadcasted an interview that took place on West Indian Rhythms with Howard Stretch Carr in 2016. This interview includes some acapella vocalizing of Tabby and Lloyd âJudgeâ Ferguson (the one surviving member).
Tony Gregory is a Jamaican soul and Reggae singer who attended the Alpha Boys School that educated many of Jamaica's most talented artists. In 1960 he became the lead singer with Byron Lee and his Dragonaires. He went on to a solo career that had him touring the world. He also began his own record label . Martin Albino was born in Trinidad and began piano lessons and eventually steelpan and drumming as a young boy. He performed as a bongo drummer on the Aunty Kay programme on Trinidad Radio. Aunty Kay started the Junior Carnival and Martin Albino was the Junior Calypso Monarch for 3 years. He immigrated to Canada and has been spreading Trinidadian culture through his creation of the Savoy SteelPan Orchestra and his numerous lessons, with senior and youth groups. Naomi Cowan was recognized as the Breakthrough Artist of 2018 (Jamaican Reggae Industry Awards). Daughter of impresario and former road manager to Bob Marley. QUARANTINED WITHOUT SHELTER - At the height of the lockdown, people living without shelter found themselves unable to quarantine, and without many of the services that function as basic infrastructure for those experiencing homelessness and poverty. While the city took some measures to provide services, the services offer the bare minimum support for people living on the streets. People without shelter deserve access to proper and adequate housing, to truly universal healthcare, and to their communities.

Recently the canadian embassy in Israel celebrated Canadians who currently serve in the Israeli army as Lone Soldiers. The ambassador even went as far as saying: âWe both share a love of Canada and a love of Israel. We at the embassy are very proud of what youâre doing.â
If encouraging Canadians to enroll in a foreign military wasnât bizarre enough, encouraging Canadians to join an occupation army is reaching a level of absurdity that should only be seen in political satire.
Lone soldiers represent only 2% of the israeli occupation army, they donât have a major impact on the armyâs operation. Despite that, the israeli government still spends millions on Lone soldiers-focused programs. Why?
To look at these questions and more, I talked to author Yves Engler who recently wrote an article about the topic called âCanada celebrates agents of Palestinian miseryâ.

Growing global demand for cheap vegetable oil for processed food, biofuel and cosmetics is a key factor behind land grabs across Africa. There are many Canadian connections to this story, including the agribusiness company Feronia, which now stands accused of complicity in the murder of an activist and the incarceration of five others in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Gwen talks to Devlin Kuyek of the organization GRAIN about these developments, and the growing push back by communities in response to the dispossession and despoliation of their lands, the loss of biodiversity, grim labour practices and repression.
Graphic designer, TrĂ© Seals, discovered that only only 3â3.5% of all practicing designers in the US are Black. That number is dramatically lower when we talk about Typeface designers in particular.
So, TrĂ© decided to infuse more of his identity into the design world via the most basic design element used in everything, Typography. He founded the typeface foundry, Vocal Type, and designed several typefaces inspired by important historical events from various marginalized cultures. This included the Typefaces: Martin, inspired by the Memphis Sanitation Strike, Ruben, inspired by the National Chicano Moratorium movement, Carrie, which honors womenâs suffrage in the US, and so on.
But how was Tré inspired by these movements to create his typefaces and how he would like them to be used? To answer these questions, Tré joined me on the phone from Washington DC to talk more about his design approach.

Since 2008, no boats from the Free Gaza Movement were allowed to Gaza. Since then, the Freedom Flotilla faced many challenges, from the deadly attack on the Mavi Marmara of 2010 to the Greek complicity of 2011, from the sabotage of Gaza's ship in 2013 to the bombing of the ship in 2014. The list goes on to include detention of activists, false accusations, and confiscation of boats. But despite the challenges, the campaign achieved many successes and benefited from support from around the world.
In this interview we went over the 12 years of solidarity of this campaign with Zohar Regev from the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. Zohar was recently in Montreal as part of her brief Canadian tour to talk about the history of the Flotilla and what's planned for 2020.
At the end of the show I read the BNC's solidarity statement with the Wet'suwet'en nation in its own fight for self-determination.

Kanahsohon (Kevin Deer) is a KanienâkehĂĄ:ka elder from KahnawĂ :ke, and is currently the acting Vice-President - Academics at the First Nations Technical Insititute (FNTI) in Tyendinaga. In this interview, he speaks about the ongoing rail blockades - part of a wave of solidarity actions in support of Wet'suwet'en land defenders - from his own perspective. Then the conversation shifts to Indigenous language issues: from the importance of immersion education at a young age, to the role of post-secondary institutions like FNTI and McGill.

Suhrid Manchanda was a force in Montreal's music community before decamping to the United States and eventually to New Dehli, India. He was studying at McGil but ultimately spent most of his time playing guitar around the city. The mighty Detroit Metal, the unforgettable Bloody Gashes, with Chloe Lum, Yannick Desranleau and Joel Taylor were both Suhrid's babies. He formed Aum Supreme with Dane Mills, the original drummer in the Arcade Fire. Suhrid booked shows, ran festivals and was generally a personality on the Boulevard. He was eventually hired as Fundraising Coordinator at CKUT in 2004. Suhrid was tireless in his devotion to the radio station's community, the city's musicians and DIY music in general. No one was surprised when Suhrid turned up as Su Real, dj/producer and star of India's Desi Bass scene. Music Coordinator Alex Moskos sat down to talk about it all with his old buddy and colleague Suhrid.
One of the digital sights we see all around us on a daily basis is words! We are exposed to hundreds of typefaces every day by the simple act of reading the world that surrounds us. Phones, computers, tablets, TVs, books, documents, street signs, posters, menus and the list goes on of examples of platforms that show us text every day.
Typefaces are important to convey a variety of messages and stories but also to make sure the written word is continuously adapted to its various modern usage.
Despite its importance, it seems that Typeface design in the Middle-East is in a bit of a crisis. While the design world is extremely rich and constantly evolving, Typeface design is falling behind. Why? and is the situation getting better?

One of the main tools used by apartheid apologists is smear campaigns. The goal is often to intentionally tarnish the reputation of anyone who dares to acknowledge Palestinians as human beings who have rights too.
Fighting Facts with Lies, is the essence of these politically motivated campaigns against any group or individuals who have any criticism of the Israeli government and the Israeli occupation military.
The trend is getting so intense that one pro-apartheid group in Canada has no less than 3 defamation lawsuits against it.
I had with me on the phone, human rights lawyer and activist, Dimitri Lascaris, to talk more about these cases and the widely used tactic of smears used by Zionist activists against human rights activists around the world today. Will these tactics end up backfiring?

Most university economics students are exposed to mainly one school of economic thought: Neoclassical Economics. For students to have an education that promotes critical thinking and an understanding of economic events and policies, they must gain exposure to alternative perspectives, the so-called 'heterodox' schools.
The Expanding Economics Podcast aims to shift the focus in economics by discussing alternative perspectives and incorporating concepts such as environmentalism, clarity and social justice in economic thinking.
In our first episode, we discuss the modern framework of university economics education, the dominance of neoclassical economics, and its drawbacks. We are joined by Professor Chris Barrington-Leigh and undergraduate students Lucy Everett, Maanav Sunderaraman, and Claire Downie to wrap our heads around what should be changed in the university economics experience.
This week, Palestine-solidarity activists in Canada achieved yet another victory related to the problematic IHRA re-definition of antisemitism.
After Vancouver and Calgary, Montreal became the 3d Canadian city where apartheid apologists tried to pass a motion that would make the city adopt the controversial IHRA re-definition, and like the other 2 cities, the motion was stopped in Montreal as well thanks to major mobilization, Montreal activists managed to convince Montreal's mayor of the controversial and divisive nature of this definition.

For years, Alternatives center has had a Palestinian flag painted on its roof. The flag is big and seen from afar on a busy street of Montreal.
I had with me in studio Michel Lambert, the Executive Director of Alternatives, to talk to us more about the story behind the mural, what kind of reactions the center got for having a Palestinian flag drawn on its roof, and did the center deal with any repercussions as a result of their Palestine-solidarity work over the years.

For a brief moment before the election, human rights activists in Canada got optimistic when the NDP responded positively to the #IVotePalestine questionnaire.
After the election, this optimism quickly turned into disappointment. when NDP leader, Jagmeet Singh, suddenly attacked BDS, praised the colonial state-building project of Israel and defended the merits of the problematic IHRA re-definition of anti-semitism.
Whatâs next? will this political hypocrisy hurt the NDP in the long run, and who benefits from this flip-flopping?
To answer these questions and more, I talked with Hanna Kawas, chairperson of the Canada-Palestine Association (CPA).

For a brief moment in November human rights activists in Canada got optimistic when Canada voted, for the first time in 14 years, âYesâ on a UN resolution that supports Palestiniansâ right to self-determination.
This âYesâ vote was quickly overshadowed by a stream of âNoâ votes Canada subsequently presented on the remaining Palestine-focused UN resolutions that was voted on in the following weeks at the UN General Assembly and that aim at defending Palestinian human rights on various levels.
So, why Canada changed its voting pattern for that one resolution, and is that enough to support Canadaâs candidature for the UN security Council seat next year?
To understand Canadaâs history at the UN, especially concerning Palestinian human rights, I talked with Hanna Kawas from the Canada-Palestine Association (CPA). CPA recently released a study that looked into Canadaâ voting record at the UN.

Recently Hillel McGill approached student executives in various student organisations to offer them free trips to Israel organized by Hillel Montreal. On Oct. 15 SSMU sent a letter to Hillel McGill raising concerns over the lack of transparency of the invitation process, the tripâs purpose was kept ambiguous and the selection process of the students wasnât explained. Subsequently, several additional concerns were raised by other Mcgill groups over the propaganda nature of these trips as well.
Eventually, it was revealed that some governing officials within SSMU did indeed accept such an expensive gift offered by an external group, raising further concerns about the impartiality of the union.

Augmented Reality often reminds us of Pokemon Go or Instagram stories. It is the addition of virtual elements to the real world. But, beyond the commercial gimmicks and trends, AR has a great creative potential for artists. Painters, graffiti artists, print artists, poets and even publishers have used it in their work. But, the potential also comes with its technical challenges, which is making many artists still hesitant to explore the medium.
To learn more about AR, I talked with Louis Rastelli, co-founder of Archive Montreal, the organisation behind Distroboto, which recently started selling Print Augmented in their art vending machines. Print Augmented is a series of print art that includes AR in them, these pieces were created during a series of AR-focused workshops that Archive Montreal organized with several Montreal and Quebec-based artists.

One of the digital sights you might have seen lately is what is known as the Extinction logo. You've seen it printed on posters, protest banners, shared online and even projected on buildings. The logo surpassed the digital world and is now being drawn on the walls in cities around the world.
The logo, created in 2011, seems to have been gaining momentum only recently and is quickly becoming the symbol of the environmentalist movement, reminding us of previous logos, like the Peace logo or the Anarchy logo.
To delve more into what makes a logo transform into a symbol of a movement and what makes the Extinction logo a good candidate for that transition, I had with me on the phone from Seattle, Journalist Jane C. Hu. Jane Recently wrote an article called The story behind the Extinction Rebellion symbol at climate protests.

In November, activists in Calgary received news of a new motion to be voted on by the Calgary city council on Nov. 18. Among other things, the motion wanted Calgary to adopt a new controversial IHRA re-redefinition of antisemitism (noihra.ca). This same definition was rejected last August by the Vancouver City Council.
Anti-apartheid activists in Calgary mobilized immediately against the motion, but, to their surprise, the city councilors who presented the motion ended up deciding to remove the controversial part. But, contrary to Vancouver, this good news might be temporary in Calgary, where apartheid apologists have a strong presence.
To better understand what happened and whatâs the state of Palestine-solidarity advocacy in Calgary, I had with me on the phone, Miriam Meir, from the Calgary chapter of the Independent Jewish Voices-Canada.

On Nov. 20th, Israeli soldiers were invited to York University as part of an event organized by the pro-apartheid group Herut Canada.
A large number of York students showed up at the event to protest the presence of occupation soldiers on their campus. Unfortunately, protesters were met with verbal and physical attacks, mainly due to the presence of the JDL, a pro-apartheid off-campus extremist group previously banned by York University.
It was reported that York security, police officers and some York administrators were present during the protest and witnessed the attacks by JDL members, but did nothing to prevent it. Today, students are demanding accountability.
I had with me on the phone SAIA (Students Against Israeli Apartheid) organizer, Moe Alqasem, who talked to us about what actually happened last week at York University. SAIA organized the protest.

Israel followed the assassination with 2 days of air rids on civilians that resulted in the death of 34 Palestinians. The deadliest attack resulted in the death of 8 members of the same family, 5 of them children between the age of 2 and 13.
When a ceasefire was reached on Nov 14, many were left wondering what was the real reason behind this attack, and was Israel's internal political turmoil the reason Palestinian blood was shed?
George Rishmawi, director of PCR (pcr.ps) and manager of the International Middle-East Media center (imemc.org), joined me on the phone from Ramallah to talk about the context of this attack and what might be the repercussions of Mike Pompeo's latest statement on the illegal West bank settlements

South Africa and the world lost an important voice on November 9th. A poet, a journalist, a critical political voice during apartheid, during the transition and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and during the post-apartheid period, right up to a few days ago. South African Sandile Dikeni died of tuberculosis. He was 53.
Since 2015, the Israeli apartheid government openly started to include veganwashing as part of its misinformation efforts. Despite that, Vegan activists remained largely silent and many even became vocal supporters of apartheid. This was particularly obvious in Toronto during a conference organized by Vegans for BDS where many animal rights activists from Toronto attempted to disrupt the event even weeks before it was held.
In this second part of our interview, Michael talks about what happened during this first event organized by Vegans for BDS last August in Toronto, and how he thinks animal rights advocates can re-appropriate their movement.
Michael also talked about his trip to occupied west bank during the Palestinian Animal Leagueâs international conference that was held in May 2018, and how Vegans for BDS was formed.

Projection Mapping is often associated with big scale aesthetics projected on buildings, but beyond the effects, Projection Mapping can be a medium for artistic exploration and conceptual experimentation, and a tool to create projects revolving around social justice issues, community building and storytelling.
In this 2-parts interview, we take a closer look at Projection Mapping. In part 1, I talked with Thien Vu Dang, founder and artistic director of MAPP_MTL, about MAPP_MTLâs new micro-mapping exhibit taking place at the Never Apart gallery. Thien gave us an introduction on Projection Mapping and gave us a tour of the exhibit.

Last March, while Gwen was in Malawi, she had an opportunity to touch base with some of the people running Farm Radio Trust, in the capital Lilongwe. Farm radio uses radio and other information and communications technologies to reach out to farmers with some of the latest thinking on sustainable farming practices and climate change information, and to listen to farmersâ concerns and goals. This conversation took place in the lead-up to Malawiâs national elections, and the conversation ranged from politics to landgrabbing and environmental concerns.

To understand why Veganism was so easily co-opted by an oppressive regime, we talked to Michael Addario, a long time animal rights activist and organizer with Vegans for BDS.
Michael also explained when the Israeli governmentâs propaganda tactics shifted to start actively using progressive notions to brand itself in a positive light in order to distract from the oppressive realities of occupation and apartheid.

The Palestinian Taybeh Wines and Beers are being blocked from being sold in Canada by the LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario) and CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) and held in Canadian storage despite getting all the approval documents needed. The LCBO sited the July federal court ruling as the reason. The court ruled that labeling wines made in illegal settlements with a âproduct of Israelâ label, is misleading and false.
Taybeh beverages are not made in a settlement and don't have a "product of Israel" label on them, yet the LCBO bizarrely claimed that the federal court ruling should relate to them as well.
To understand the details of this yet again controversial behavior by the LCBO and CFIA, I talked to Karen Rodman, Voluntary Executive Director of Palestine Just Trade, the agent of the Taybeh brewery in Canada.

On October 10, BDS Quebec held a press conference. BDS Quebec is a Third Party in the ongoing Canadian Federal elections. A 'third party' is a person or an entity that is not a political party, candidate or constituency association, but that engages in political advertising during the elections.
As part of BDS Quebec's activities in this election season, was, first, to launch a poster campaign in the streets of Montreal, targeting 3 specific neighbourhood, which includes the Prime Minster's, Justin Trudeau, district, Papineau. Secondly, they held a press conference where they cited 7 questions they would like the main political party's leaders in Canada to address.
I talked with 2 of the speakers at the conference, Bruce Katz (PAJU) and Corey Balsam (IJV), about BDS Quebec's Poster campaign and the 7 questions they would like to see added to the Leaders' debates.

Today we have a panel discussion on prison abolition and climate justice with speakers Robyn Maynard, Cedar, and El Jones, in solidarity with today's Climate Strike. The panel was organized by The Leap.
Canadian federal elections are happening on October 21st. Although there are differences, all Canadian political parties are often called out for not doing enough on the question of Palestine-Israel. Some parties are even accused of full complicity with apartheid.
Seeing this discouraging political landscape, it is not surprising that Palestinian activists in Canada are losing patience and wondering when all these parties will see some electoral consequences for their failure on this issue. This is why the #IVotePalestine campaign was launched.
I Vote Palestine is asking all parties' candidates to answer 9 simple Palestine-related questions to see where each candidate stand on this key human rights issue. I talked to Vancouver-based Palestinian activist, Hanna Kawas, about this campaign, how the questions were chosen, and did they get any response.

In 2017, Dr. David Kattenburg discovered that 2 settlement wines, imported from the occupied Palestinian Territories, are being sold in Canada with the label âproducts of Israelâ on them. Outraged by the find, Dr. Kattenburg took his concerns to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency which agreed with his concerns only to backtrack less than 24h later due to political interference. Subsequently, Dr. David Kattenburg took his case to the federal court and won, but the Canadian government, adamant to defend apartheid, announced it will appeal the ruling.
I talked with Dr. David Kattenburg who took us through this ongoing journey surrounding the deceptive settlement wines in Canadian stores.

On July 29, a federal judge in Canada ruled that wines produced in illegal settlements should not be labeled âProduct of Israelâ. Justice Anne Mactavish called the labeling âfalse, misleading and deceptive.â The ruling was part of a court case centered around 2 specific settlement wines sold in Canada under the misleading label.
The ruling was seen as a major victory by Palestine-solidarity activists, but the legal battle is not over because the Canadian government decided to appeal the judgeâs decision.

It has been exactly six years since Dr. Mohamed Morsi, the first democratically elected president, was dismissed from office in a military coup orchestrated by then General Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. What are the lessons learned?
We invited James Gelvin, Professor of History at UCLA, to analyze the situation.
He is the author of The New Middle East: What Everyone Needs to Know (Oxford University Press, 2017) and The Arab Uprisings: What Everyone Needs to Know (Oxford University Press, 2015).
There was a surge in international media coverage of the notorious North Mara gold mine in Tanzania as Forbidden Stories, an international consortium of 40 journalists publishing in 30 media organizations around the world, rolled out a number of damning articles revealing killings, rapes, intimidation and environmental destruction in the communities surrounding the mine. This story has a direct Canadian connection: Barrick Gold owns 63.9% of Acacia Mining, the company that owns 100% of the North Mara gold mine. Gwen talks to Catherine Coumans, Research Coodinator of Mining Watch Canada, which for years has been researching and publishing on the abuses at the mine.
Duha Elmardi and Riyad Almubarak, two Sudanese activists, spoke about Sudan Uprising: The Exhibition with art work, presentations and films was held in June. This is a critical moment in Sudan's history and Amandla fully supports the struggle for freedom and justice.
Duha and Riyad also provided news of the bloody turn of events that occurred over the previous weekend. Peaceful protesters in cities and towns throughout the country were brutally massacred, beaten and tortured by the militia set up during the Darfur crisis. A state of terror has once again descended on the country.

In July 1990 Mohawk Warriors and their supporters began an blockade to stop a group of developers from expanding a golf course onto a piece of land referred to as âThe Pinesâ, a sacred burial ground in KanehsatĂ :ke. The resistance expanded to Akwesasne and Kahnawake and then across the country, which lasted throughout the summer. The confrontation with Canadaâs Armed Forces and SĂ»rtĂ© du QuĂ©bec were at times violent. CKUT programmers were embedded behind the barricades and provided regular reports.

Under a new scheme, the World Bank seems intent on dismantling customary land laws in a push to privatize land and ultimately turn it into a commodity for sale to the highest bidder. In Africa, where much of the land is still governed by customary laws, this constitutes an odious and immediate threat to peopleâs livelihoods, autonomy and culture. Dumiso Dabengwa died on May 23 and with typical self-effacing modesty leaving little trace of the important role he played in the struggle to free Zimbabwe from the entrenched racist settler regime of Ian Smith's Rhodesia. Ole Gjerstad spoke with Doug about Dumiso's key role as the head of the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) security network; his role in 1980 to ensure a peaceful transition and integration of antagonistic armies; and later his participation in a unity government after the terrible massacres of ZAPU supporters known as the Gukurahundi (1983-87) by ZANU's notorious Fifth Brigade.

British-Columbia based mining company Nevsun Resources has been accused of using forced labour at its Bisha mine in Eritrea. Three Eritrean refugees in Canada have been struggling to bring the company before a Canadian court to answer the charge. But each step of the way Nevsun has pushed back, arguing Canada has no jurisdiction and the case should be heart in an Eritrean court. Gwen talked to Dawit Demoz, an Eritrean activist living in Toronto, about the court case, Eritreaâs vast system of conscript labour, and the prospects for change.
Since December 19, 2018, protests in Sudan that started with chants of "Freedom, Peace, Justice" have escalated demanding the removal of Omar El Bashir. After 30 years in power, he remains defiant and the authorities' crackdown on demonstrators have fuelled the anger. Are we witnessing a Sudanese Spring? Khaled Medani, Professor of Political Science and Islamic Studies and the Chair of African Studies Program at McGill University in Montreal, just returned from Sudan. He explains the situation.
The Black Student Network of McGill (BSN) took over CKUT on Friday, February 1st to host Black Talk, 12 hours of Afrocentric special programming to kick off Black History Month. On Remembrance Day it is important to honour the men and women who served and suffered, but it is essential to reflect on the root causes of war and all the victims of all wars. The war for Zimbabwe independence is a case in point. Doug gave a brief historical background and presented the coverage by the excellent investigative journalists at Ricochet.media who thoroughly researched how serving members of the armed forces set up an online store to sell Rhodesian memorabilia. In a perverse, white supremacist way, they are glorifying the brutal racist regime led by the WW2 veteran pilot, Ian Smith from 1965-1979, as the epitome of white âcivilisation.â

One of the hallmark experiences of Indigenous populations around the world is territorial dispossession. For the Maasai of northern Tanzania, the story is no different.
The combined forces of government, business and conservation groups have cut deeply into the Maasaiâs way of life, resources and, indeed, survival. But they have fought back at every turn, and recently scored an important victory in the East Africa Court of Justice. Gwen talks to Elizabeth Fraser of the Oakland Institute, and co-author of Losing the Serengeti, on what this legal victory means for the Maasai struggle.

An intense month of work marked the trip to Malawi of Tom Peters, Rikano dhe Paganon and Amandlaâs, Doug Miller. They were dedicated to finishing another phase of building the Chilanga Community Clinic, including building the structure, drilling a well and installing the piping to the clinic and nurseâs house, getting electricity connected and working with their Malawian partners to recruit medical personnel and attain accreditation and government funding. The Indian Ocean island of Lamu is a special place. It is small and delicate, and home to the 700-year-old port city of Lamu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It belongs to Kenya, and is now on the threshold of a massive industrialization scheme. What will this mean for the thousands of Lamu residents who have derived their livelihoods and autonomy from a centuries-old fishing industry? What will it mean for the complex mangrove system, the foundation of a vibrant marine wildlife ecosystem? Amandla collaborator Zahra Moloo went to Lamu to try to find answers to these and other questions. In the first part of this series, Zahra talks to Mohamed Athman of the organization Save Lamu about the potential impact that the enormous infrastructural underpinning of this scheme will have on Lamuâs fishing community.
Samaa interviewed the Producer/Director of the documentary, Ariel Nasr. She asked him about what motivated him to present this particular story and what difficulties he has encountered. She discussed with him the art of featuring horrific abuse, like torture to which AbouSoufian has been subjected, with such a light touch. It is implied but not graphically depicted.
Listeners may recall that Amandla has covered extensively the ordeal of AbouSoufian Abdel Razik in its various stages as it was unfolding.
Currently, although AbouSoufian has been able to return to Canada, he cannot travel freely and is still battling a court case against CSIS. Amandla will keep you informed of the latest, as always.

A newly minted peace and friendship agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea brings an official end to 20 years of cold war between the two countries. This unexpected rapprochement was greeted with jubilation on both sides of the border and for the first time in two decades phone lines and flights are up and running between the two countries. But many Eritreans are left wondering if this will lighten the burden of the oppressive regime of Isaias Afewerki or make them even more vulnerable. Gwen talked to Eritrean refugee advocate Dawit Demoz on the prospects for true peace for Eritreans.

Naomi Myrakawa, as well as being an Associate Professor at Princeton, authored the books: The First Civil Right; How Liberals Built Prison America. Her assertion is Prison America may have started under Nixon and Reagan, but Liberals, through well-meaning changes to laws, procedures, the criminal code and policing, only made the justice system bigger and more complex, which ultimately led to the U.S.A. having the largest prison system the world has ever experienced. Julio Mudaking, political prisoner and author of several books, reads two of his recent poems about racial injustice for black people, in and out of prison.
An engineering feat of gigantic proportion, the Grand Renaissance Dam is currently being built on the Blue Nile in Ethiopia. When completed in 2018, it will stand as the largest dam in Africa, a symbol of modernity and source of pride for that country. However this dam will drastically affect the water of the Nile river that merges with the Blue Nile in Ethiopia then flows downstream through Sudan and Egypt. Negotiations between Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia for water allocations have stalled and a dreadful threat looms over more than 100 million Egyptians who depend entirely on the Nile for their water supply. Samaa Elibyari talks about this vital issue, describing the project and its implications for the countries concerned. In 2016, the Canadian government made an about face and started issuing deportation orders to Guinean refugee claimants living in Canada. The policy change has left the members of this communityâwho have built lives here in jobs, at school and with neighbours and friendsâfeeling under threat and fearful of what awaits them should they be forced to return. Some have organized under the Guinean Committee for a Status for All, including Mohamed Barry, who came to Canada in 2012. Amandlaâs Gwen Schulman talks to him about his fears and concerns for himself and his compatriots, and collective efforts to resist the deportations.

A country that is beleaguered from within and without, the situation is complex and it is not at all clear that ramping up foreign intervention using the UN model will bring justice or lasting peace. Doug has made a review of the press and offers this summary of the situation of African refugees, particularly Eritreans and Sudanese in Israel as they face illegal deportation
Jock Mackay of Sutherland River, Nova Scotia met Joan Baxter last summer at a local bookstore launch of her Seven Grains of Paradise: a culinary journey through Africa. Jock is an ethnomusicologist and folklorist, and food issues are often central to insights into both fields. He taught at Vanier College in Montreal before retiring to his maritime home about 5 years ago. He and Doug reviewed Baxterâs book, which reveals the richness of Africaâs contribution to the worldâs food resources and counters many of the myths of food scarcity and famine. She shows how the scandalous intervention of foreign donors and investors has caused African to fall from a net exporter 50 years ago to a major dependent food importer. Both Jock and Doug highly recommend this very readable book to everyone, not just for an interest in food but also the world system that distorts and commercialises this essential human need.

South Africaâs National Poet Laureate, Keorapetse âBra Willieâ Kgositsile, passed away in Johannesburg on Wednesday, 3 January. He was seventy-nine. The Government organised a state funeral for the renowned poet at which Vice- President, Cyril Ramaphosa, delivered the official eulogy. Our tribute opens with Bra Willie reading his poem Anguish Longer Than Sorrows. We played a short extract of Vice President Ramaphosaâs eulogy which outlines Bra Willieâs history and activism. Many South African artists came together for a final musical tribute on January 16 from which we play a song sung and played by Bra Willieâs contemporaries and fellow exiles, Dorothy Masuka and Jonas Gwangwa.
German percussionist, Sven Kacirek and his Kenya counterpart, Daniel Mburu Muhuni have put together a record about how global trade and the Economic Partnership Agreements imposed by the European Union exploit the weakest most marginalised people struggling to survive. They interviewed diplomats, farmers, civil servants, academics and NGO workers to call Western politicians to task and the musicians use loops, squawking saxophones and pulsing rhythms to add emphasis to the points being made. Doug also interviewed another South African film-maker, Joseph Oesi, who read a message from his friend, Mandla Dube, at the Gala about his goals and hopes for the film. He is brutally beaten by police. Following the 1976 Soweto uprisings, Kalushi exiles himself to join the liberation movement. He returns from military training in Angola en route to his mission, where his friend and comrade Mondy loses control and shoots two innocent people on Johannesburgâs Goch Street. Mondy is severely beaten and tortured; Kalushi is forced to stand trial under the common purpose doctrine. The state seeks the highest punishment from the court: death by hanging. Kalushi has his back against the wall and uses the courtroom as a final battlefield. His sacrifice immortalizes him into a hero of the struggle and an international icon of June 16, 1976.

QPIRG McGill The Fight Awakens: The Radical Possibilities & Failures of Science Fiction Panel
As radical nerds, we want to create a space to explore our commitment to transforming our lives and relationships through our love of science fiction as well as our experiences organizing and acting in our homes and on the streets. How does science fiction inform our politics and actions, and facilitate visions of the future that resist the Empire? How do our politics influence what we love about scifi?
At its best, science fiction articulates new ways for people to live with and relate to one another, exploring complex social circumstances and seeking answers to issues and questions that mirror - or even predict - those that are present in contemporary society. On the other hand, science fiction can be used to play out the anxieties of the powerful, cementing and naturalizing hierarchies through narratives of invasion, assimilation, and conquest. What can science fiction contribute to our struggles against power and authority? How do we mobilize the lessons of science fiction in our daily lives? Where and how do our geekiness and militancy intersect?
This panel brings together radical nerds to discuss the glories and limitations of science fiction in our struggles against oppression, the state and its institutions, and all the bullshit that we face as marginalized people.
Panelist Bios: Molly Swain is an otipĂȘmsiw-iskwĂȘw currently living in amiskwacĂźwĂąskahikan and completing a Masters in Native Studies at the University of Alberta. She is the co-host of the Indigenous Feminist science fiction podcast MĂ©tis in Space and a self-described âbig giant nerd.â Her favourite Star Trek is the Original Series.
Becca Yu has spent countless hours pretending to sit in meetings, exist in the world, or do finances at a non-profit--when secretly she is thinking about that sci fi/fantasy thing she watched last night or 10 years ago, and how many feelings it gave her, and asking herself why the writers had to do that ONE THING? Why did they have to do that thing?? If you understand this feeling, maybe you can be friends, or at least you might enjoy listening to her discuss with other radical nerds. Also, she's spent hundreds of hours reading (sometimes writingâŠ) fanfiction and loves to talk about the ways we can world-build our own stories. So, there's that. Also, she's mixed Chinese/white, super gay, anarchist-y, and if she had to make a choice: Deep Space 9.
James Goddard is an inter-disciplinary artist. His artistic and curatorial practices both regularly explores issues related and the bringing about of a better world. In particular his solo performance project Skin Tone is deeply indebted to the long, tradition of sonic afro-futurity that traces it's lineage from avant-garde jazz to cutting-edge electronic music. An avid reader of science fiction since youth, he's probably watched the Hugo Awards Livestream more times than he would like to admit.
Noah E. is a shy, brainweird Jewish nerd who mostly talks to people by facilitating workshops, and who has lots of feelings about birds. Noah also really likes cetaceans and has a lot of thoughts about the use of whales as a plot device in Star Trek IV. Noah is bad at sitting still, but good at listening, and spends a lot of time thinking about words (often in multiple languages simultaneously). Noah finds it amusing to play music from Star Wars on brass instruments and plastic xylophones, and is particularly partial to The Next Generation series.

Il revient aujourd'hui avec un livre intitulé ''De Quoi Total est-elle la Somme ?''. Donc Total c'est cette firme française présente dans 130 pays du monde à travers toutes ses filiales. La conférence a ainsi porté sur la firme Total mais plus largement sur les firmes multinationales, leur fonctionnement et la maniÚre dont leurs actions impactent le monde aujourd'hui. This morning, the Monday Morning After aired the second episode of their new magazine, Bloodworks.
Bloodworks is a new radio magazine that focuses on topics, news and discussions related to HIV-AIDS. It will be airing on the Monday Morning After show every 1st and 3d Monday of the month.
The magazine is a collaboration between CKUT radio and Concordiaâs HIV/AIDS Project.
