RX Radio is a radio station– run by and for children - at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. The initiative aims to create a platform for communication between hospitalised children, their families, and the health services by providing patients with the skills and support to produce and broadcast radio programmes across the hospital. In addition, we are a project initiated under the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital Facility Board.

[LISTEN] Yusrah engages with Adiel Salie on, the owner of @gentspridebarbershop and father to RX Radio reporter Kauthar Salie, has set his sights on raising funds for RX Radio, by hosting a Barber Competition on the 29th of September 2024. Adiel initially became involved with the station through his daughter, Kauthar who was admitted at Red Cross Hospital at the age of 7 for Nephrotic Syndrome & Kidney transplant. Furthermore, RX Radio will be the beneficiary of this event.
Olana is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Cape Town after earning a Master of Public Health Degree. Her research revolves around multiple chronic illnesses and mental health. When she is not immersed in research, you can find her hitting the pavement for a run.
Olona is one of the 13 runners who participated in the@totalsportstwooceansmarathon to help aid RX Radio.
[Via WhatsApp] The stand-in host of "Let's Talk About It", Jesse, is chatting to Gloria Veale who hails from the Cape Flats and is a beautiful mom of two. At the age of 12, she was involved in a gang related incident. At the age of 14, she became an anti-apartheid activist and got involved with prison for opposing apartheid. She then became a business woman at the age of 29 and has been a part of the ministry in the community for 16 years.
Yusrah is an RX Radio reporter and a host of B&B with Yusrah & Naseerah, she became a reporter when she was 9 years. Yusrah’s show has been nominated for the South African Radio Awards two times, in 2019 and 2023.

As a radio presenter, areas of specialisation included shows on literature, the environment and ‘women’s issues’. In print she’s covered environment matters, books and literature, lifestyle, travel and décor amongst other things. She has a podcast called Books Stories People and is founder of an NPO: @womanzonecapetown and The Women’s Library at the Artscape Theatre Centre in Cape Town.
ibongile Nkete completed her Matric in 2018 at Cunningham High School in the Eastern Cape where she was the top achiever and also the President of the school. Currently she works as a Financial Advisor and Community Careworker for @triangleproject_za.
Qaqamba is a young RX Radio reporter and Board member. She used to host a show called Qaqamba’s Inspiration Corner where she interviewed a variety of people with the aim to motivate and inspire others. Currently, Qaqamba is registered for a Masters in Law at the University of the Western Cape (UWC).
Last year she took part in the @capetownmarathon where she was pushed in a buggy by Alan Jacobs to contribute to RX Radio’s sustainability. On the 10th of March this year she will once again venture on raising funds for the station through the @ctcycletour.

Sebastian is joined by Phil McLean to talk about World Wetlands Day. He is a Botanist working with the Western Cape Government for the last 6 years, and in various forms for government for another 10 before that. He started with the Western Cape as an Environmental Law Enforcement officer (Environmental Police) and now works for the Water Sector in pollution management, where rivers and wetlands are his specialty.
azia Hisham is no stranger to RX Radio Top 10, she is a proud mom of 19-year-old Nura. Nura is a disabled teen and as a family they joined @warrioronwheelsfoundation to participate in cycling events and other adventures to support her.
Razia has organised for Ettienne Wilsnagh to pull Qaqamba Cuba in a buggy at the @ctcycletour on the 10th of March 2024 to raise funds for the station. Ettienne is the Franchise Principal for Alchemy Financial Services. When he saw a young disabled child being towed in the 2015 Cycle tour while doing his very first event, he knew that this is how he wants to ride this event in the future.

Paxton Fielies is a South African singer, songwriter and aspiring philanthropist. She rose to fame in 2017, after winning the 13th season of Idols South Africa. She is the youngest South African female person to win the title. Since then she has made her mark on the industry and isn’t slowing down anytime soon, as she recently released her latest Album 23:23 which features artist like Shekhinah and Majorsteez This collection of songs is a her reflection and diary through music and shares a piece of her hometown with us as she includes Nooitgedacht New Apostolic Children’s Choir where she first started her journey.
Sinesipho Peter is a Cape Town based hip hop artist with the stage name Bravo Le Roux WP. Bravo Le Roux believes in art and does his music with passion, shakes the crowd when performing. He has performed in major events such as ipotsoyi, ikasi experience, Ivyson Tour and ubumnandi festival. BravoLe Roux has been an artist since growing up, from drawing, painting, dancing and music. His Igazi, linyembezi Nombilo Album which is translated as Blood, Sweat and Tears was released in June 2023. He is getting ready to headline one of the most popular festival Cotton fest and also recently performed at the Springboks Trophy Tour after their victory at the Rugby World Cup.
Jill Fortuin qualified as a surf lifeguard in 1993. She has a Bachelors in Oral Health from the University of the Western Cape, a Master’s degree in eHealthcare and Telemedicine at the University of Queensland and a Doctorate of Philosophy from UWC. She also contributed her expertise to the Ministerial Advisory Committee on eHealth at the National Department of Health. Combining her extensive knowledge and experience from academia and her lifeguard background, Jill now dedicates herself to advancing Drowning Prevention initiatives in South Africa and beyond.
Chené Fourie is the Reach Coordinator for A21, one of the largest organizations solely dedicated to combating human trafficking globally. A21 takes a contextualized approach, actively working on the frontlines to respond to and prevent trafficking.
Thaakirah Matthews and her sister, Sumayyah are RX Radio reporters who had their own show called Heart Beat with Sumayyah and Thaakirah. Thaakirah is a current patient at Red Cross Hospital who was born with a Critical Congenital Heart Disease. Together as a family, they established Brave Little Hearts SA (BLHSA) on 3 December 2014. It is a CHD awareness and advocacy group for parents and patients with CHD. BLHSA is also a proud member of Global Arch, an international organisation that brings together organizations from around the world to learn, collaborate, and speak out together about the unmet needs of those living with childhood-onset heart conditions.
Jill Benting is a youth development enthusiast who is passionate about sport and empowering those around her. She has a vast and in-depth experience in youth-focused Empowerment Programmes geared at unlocking hidden potential, and is currently managing two in-house youth empowerment programmes being implemented by the South African Foundation.
Joining her is Luqmaan Ismail. A life coach and life skill facilitator for 9 years. He is also an former professional rugby player, where he played for the Golden Lions as well as abroad. Luqmaan is a Laureus YES 2016 Alumni, and till today continue with youth development and leadership training for young people in our communities.

Dj Cosher is a Cape Town Based Dj Producer and owner of Cosher Recording Studios. Before taking his place on the stage he was a Cricket Player and Coach, very quickly he illustrious career in the industry blossomed serving a long list of night clubs, restaurants and other events. You may recognise his voice where he headlined events such as K-Day, Rugby World Cup 7’s at the stadium and Official after parties such as Cold Play, Kings of Leon, Gypsy Kings and U2. Most notably his new single Mad World had caught National notoriety and climbed to into the Top 10 within three weeks.
Anthea Lewis (Skin Cancer Awareness): – A leader in the fight against cancer in SA, since 1931, the purpose of the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) is to offer a unique, integrated service to the public and to all people affected by cancer. It’s mission is to be the preferred non-profit leader that enables research with regards to lowering cancer risk, educating the public regarding symptoms, screening and risk reduction, and providing care and support to all people affected by cancer. Today we have Anthea Lewis from CANSA to talk more about this, especially since we’re in a hot, sunny summer.

Author and recording artist, Unathi Kapa, was born and raised in the 1980”s in Ngojini Village in the former Ciskei. She gained her undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications in Industrial Psychology, Political Science and Enterprise Management at Rhodes University. She writes and performs her poetry and is an avid social commentator. In her 2021 debut memoir she creatively narrates the story of her upbringing, a convoluted journey of bliss, tragedy and scorn while plagued by the incessant question 'Who am I?'
Jennifer Olivier is an RX Radio Parents Fundraising Committee Member and grandmother to an RX Radio reporter living with a disability. In light of Disability Awareness Month, Jennifer is sharing about how it is to raise a child with a disability and what this month means to her.
Chelsey Daniels started at RX Radio as a Public Relations and Marketing Intern in 2020 as part of her 3rd year internship programme. She has gained some experience in writing, admin duties and fundraising. In 2021 she has become the Junior Project Officer for the station. Her job involves maintaining our good office space and she enjoys interacting with others and meeting new people.

Kamiel Singh is SABMR's Sustainability Portfolio Manager. His role is to make sure the doctors, donors and patients receive funds through financial projects that communicate vision. The focus of this interview is the National Save a Life Raffle that SABMR is doing, which aims to cover the donor-related costs of three patients, mainly children, who are currently on their waiting list for bone marrow stem cell transplants.
In light of Organ Donor Month, Talitha is talking to Zaahier Isaacs, the Head the Patient Services Department at the South African Bone Marrow Registry. A typical day at the office for him involves responding to new search requests for patients, which must be completed and reported within 24 hours. Zaahier has a strong interest for Life Sciences. This interest began in 1985 at age 15 when his mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lymphoma and was given only three months to live.
Lebo Diverse is a self-published author of an anthology titled Pieces of Expressions. The book stems from a place of a drowning young person who felt suicidal. However, their spirit refused to leave earth without leaving something behind.
The book was meant to be a parting gift to the world that turned into a birth certificate and Lebo is the living testimony. Pieces of Expression proves the power of Publish – when Lebo as battling with the conflict of publish or perish, publishing prevailed. Lebo is also co-developing an annual collective publication titled “Imagining a Queer and Black Institution” where black queers from around the globe share their stories.

For this interview he is joined by his partner, Tracy Benjamin, a Media Specialist at an investment company. She supports Alan in his running journey to such an extent they both came up with our current campaign, RX Radio’s Warriors on Wheels.

Angel Campey is a stand-up comedian that broke into the comedy scene in 2011 on Long Street, Cape Town. She has appeared on Comedy Central’s “Kings and Queens of Comedy” multiple times, she has performed at the Johannesburg International Comedy Festival, and toured to New York City in 2016, performing on some of the most famous comedy stages in the world including a trip to the JFL Comedy Festival in Montreal, Canada. In 2015 Angel was nominated by the South African Department of Arts and Culture for an Mbokodo Award, recognising women changing the game in their industries, for Comedy. Angel joined Smile 90.4FM in 2017, and currently she co-hosts The JoyRide with Angel Campey.

Emily is speaking to Jenny Wright the CEO of Milk Matters. She joined Milk Matters in 2005 in order to assist with running Milk Matters, a small but growing and developing organisation. Jenny’s desire to get involved in breastfeeding support was sparked by seeing far too many distressed mothers giving up breastfeeding because of a lack of adequate support and information.
Kendahl Benting is a 13-year-old RX Radio reporter who completed the RX Radio Basic Training 2021. She was recently awarded an opportunity to watch the opening game of the recent Netball World Cup where South Africa took on Wales. This world cup was quite special because it was the first one to be hosted in Africa.

Hailing from the coastal city of Durban, Majozi is a proudly South African musician who wears his heart on his sleeve – quite literally. He has tattoos dedicated to his faith and to his mother - two very defining aspects of his life, both of which have inspired the music he writes. He burst onto the scene in 2013 with his catchy debut EP, Marvelous Light, before signing to before signing to Universal Music South Africa in 2014. 2023 sees MAJOZI being at the top of his game with regards to treating fans to new music. 2 June 2023 sees the release of his third new single for the year, entitled I'LL BE THERE. The single comes after the release of 'Safe In The Sound' in March, and 'Honest' in April.

Kumele Mngoma is an impressive young individual who has made waves in the world of pageantry. Last year November, she had the honour of being crowned Miss jnr Teen Western Province. She has used her title to give back to the community and better herself as an individual. At just 15 years old, she has achieved the distinction of being a finalist in the Miss Teenager South Africa competition.
Mark Thomas is an architect at Mark Thomas Architects (MTA) who initiated the idea of hosting a fundraiser for RX Radio by putting on a concert in collaboration with the Cape Town Brass Band after he heard our plea to secure more funds to keep children's voices on the air. We will talk to him about the concert, what you can expect, and why he decided to join the fight to help RX Radio continue to empower children's voices.
Kwikspar Pinelands has been such great supporter of the station and the two sons of the stores Supervisor Gabriel and Joshua Putzier- Worship will be talking about why businesses should give back to the communities they operate in. Gabriel who is 21 years old has a passion for all things performing arts as he is currently a second year drama and dance major student at the Waterfront Theatre School. Joshua at present is working at Pinelands Kwikspar with his dad where he works in the kitchen as an assistant chef, and not only is he skilled in the kitchen but, he has also given a talk with SAPS about the dangers of cyber bullying and hacking.
Lilah is chatting to Nikita Ashleen Scott, MWI Phenomenal Miss International, who is wheelchair bound and a CEO of Born To Shine. She was in a car accident on the 2nd of February 2019 where her life took a turn at the age of 17.
Dr Herlinda Kutyowa is a Paediatric Registrar from Namibia, Windhoek and has been living in Cape Town for 10 months. She currently works at Red Cross War Memorial Hospital and is very passionate about healthcare advocacy and education. Daniels has a plethora of experience in the theatre industry. His passion lies in live performance, and he has particularly strong background in children's theatre, where he is excited to foster new audiences and tell stories that speak to a new generation. He wrote the script adaptation, music, and lyrics for Wanda and directed the original production.

Timothy is a UCT graduate, and his musical journey began at age 11 at The Ubuntu Music Academy. He developed a passion for jazz and in particular, the guitar, as the instrument for interpreting this unique form of music. Though very young, Timothy quickly gained skill and proficiency in playing the guitar. He immersed himself in his studies while exploring the wide spectrum of jazz styles and techniques employed by iconic guitarists such as George Benson, Jonathan Butler, Earl Klugh, Peter White and others. In 2021 he released his DEBUT Jazz ALBUM “For Such A Time As This”.
Leah Tshotwana has strong leadership skills running through her veins. She had the great honor of being selected as class leader of 2021 and being elected as the Junior Mayor of the City of Cape Town’s Junior City Council. The Covid-19 pandemic was the worse time of our lives for South Africa, especially Cape Town. Leah took part of an initiative in handing out food parcels to the underprivileged in the Cape Town. This year she took part in a public speaking competition achieving 88% and 90% and made it through to the National round that will take place this year.
Brandon’s optimism and tenacity has helped him overcome adversities, showing others what is achievable through hard work and a positive mind-set. Brandon is passionate about motivating others, spreading disabilities awareness and breaking the negative stigma that society has attached to disabilities. He aims to empower others to find their true potential.
Sarah grew up in Cape Town and is a Foundation Phase teacher by training. She plays the trumpet, enjoys swimming, camping and being with good friends and family. Being around children and working with them has always been easy and enjoyable for her. Recently she became an aunt for the first time, and loves playing and spending time with her 8 month old nephew (whose father is a doctor at Red Cross). Sarah has been running regularly for ten years and this has taken a lot of determination and perseverance for her.
oabaloso Keagana Moloabi, was born and raised in Bloemfontein, he is a language practitioner and editor with a B Tech Degree in Language Practice from Central University of Technology, Free State. With over 10 years of experience in the publishing industry, Moabaloso has been working at National Parliament's Language Services since 2010, starting as a Language Practitioner in the Translation Unit and currently serving as a Senior Language Practitioner/Hansard Editor in the Hansard Reporting Unit. Moabaloso also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Intercultural Communication from the University of Stellenbosch. Apart from being a passionate social runner, Moabaloso is also a fervent sports enthusiast who takes pride in the achievements of South Africa's national teams and individual sports representatives.
Professor Wiedaad Slemming is a health professional, academic and researcher with more than 20 years’ experience working clinically as a Paediatric Physiotherapist, conducting research, developing policies and programmes, and planning and managing projects and programmes and services in a variety of settings in South Africa, England, and Wales. She started her clinical career at Red Cross Children’s Hospital many years ago. Wiedaad’s particular areas of expertise and research include maternal and child health and nutrition, early childhood development (ECD), child disability and health systems strengthening, and she currently serves on international and national technical and advisory groups in these fields.
Edward Keenan Jacobs is a South African human rights activist who believes in the transformative power of education, critical thinking, and ethical leadership. A recent Political Science Master's Graduate, Edward currently works as the Advocacy and Empowerment Junior Manager at Justice Desk Africa, a Human Rights NPO that aims to empower everyday people to understand, defend and access their fundamental human rights. He is passionate about the development of young people and has six years of experience working with young people in communities around South Africa.

Cindy Pietersen is a high school teacher at Soneike High school in Highbury. It was at this very school where she met the boys that we now know as the Brown Brick Boys. She played an integral role in the boys’ growth as musicians as well as guiding them sharpen their musical skills while staying focused on school. She’s helped the young boys navigate their way through the local music scene as they strive to be the next big boyband in South Africa. Cindy is a former figure skater and hip-hop dancer who has a strong passion for women empowerment and uplifting of young people in her community
Nandipha Gcora is a partially blind lady who is here to talk about her “Lunch in the Dark” event called “Walk A Mile In A Blind Persons Shoes”. The event will be taking place on the 18th of March at the SHAWCO A Section in Khayelitsha. The main purpose of this event is to put you in the shoes of a blind person for about 2 to 3 hours so they can see how people living with blindness go about their lives.
Anica Kiana is a break out 21-year-old singer / songwriter hailing from Cape Town, South Africa. In her teens, Anica spent all of her time honing in on her love for music, practicing whenever she got a moment and even taking part in every musical at her school. At the start of 2019, shortly after graduating high school, Anica set off to pursue her goal of becoming a force in the entertainment industry. After releasing 3 singles independently and garnering support from local radio stations, she quickly caught the eye of internationally acclaimed South African pop duo, Locnville, who featured her on their SAMA award winning album Tribes and Angels. The next two years would see the songstress develop her sound even more, eventually catching the attention of South African Global Hip Hop phenomenon, Nasty C who praise Anica Kiana for her “voice of gold”. The two would later go on to complete Anica’s formal Debut single, Gotta Leave, releasing 27 August 2021 from CBGSV Entertainment. There is no doubt that Anica Kiana is already solidifying her place in the entertainment industry, and is one to watch with a keen eye over the coming years.
Jonathan is a Clinical Technologist in Nephrology for the past 35 years and currently hold the position of Assistant Director Clinical Technology at Tygerberg Academic Hospital. He is also the current President of the Renal Care Society of South Africa, which aims to support and educate healthcare workers, patients and the general public on kidney disease. His areas of expertise include all therapies related to the treatment of kidney disease, such as dialysis and related procedures, as well as training and research. Hobbies include playing guitar and road running. Sr. Shirley is a specialized intensive registered nursing sister. She has been in nursing for 30 years. Shirley also forms part of the Nephrology team at Tygerberg Academic Hospital where she is currently the transplant coordinator specializing in kidney transplantation. Her role includes organ procurement and coordination of kidney transplant recipients of the living and deceased donor program. Shirley is also involved in education and awareness programs.

Tracy Cohen - Book Release - Tracy Cohen is a South African author
who has had her work published by some of South Africa’s leading broadcasters
such as News24, Sunday Times and Mediclinic Daily digital Magazine. She will be
talking to us about her new book “Triumph”, a book that she hopes will help tell
the stories of people living with Cerebral Palsy in a raw and intimate way while
educating the reader about the disability and what it’s like to live with one. Tracy
also lives with Cerebral Palsy, and she also has been volunteering and helping
raise funds for the station.

She is a co-host of a podcast called ‘The Scoop’, a show where they talk to women from all over the country to hear their stories. Influenced by old-school comedy greats and touted by his colleagues as an up and coming great, this Comics Choice Award winning stand up comedian will have you laughing from deep within your belly. He made his big stage performance at the Joburg Arts Alive Festival in the Comedy Nine-Nine showcase in 2012 and earned rave reviews from the audience members and organizers alike. Since then, he has become one of the most recognisable up and coming comics in South Africa.
Zola Dalani has a passion and a heart for people and for social justice and holds a national business management diploma, but it is Zola’s hands on work on the ground and her own lived experience that she is most known for. Zola was an intern with an organization called At Heart which is located in Stellenbosch and was responsible for mobilizing, event organizing and a sex educator. Zola is the clinic assistance and works in the clinic and in communities to provide clinic services to the people that we reach and is also a traditional healer who always goes the extra mile for everyone.
Michael Bars is a Rapper, Record Producer, Songwriter & amp; Studio Engineer who was born on the 22nd of February, 2002. In 2020, Michael Bars slowly gained recognition after the release of his single Pac-Man which featured Filipino rapper Michael Pacquiao. Shortly after that he released his debut Album Royal Rumble on the 29th of June 2020, it surpassed a million streams in the first few months and then followed up with the release of his 2nd studio album “Anarchy” on the 6th of October, 2020. In 2021, Michael Bars collaborated with Filipino artist Ez Mil on their single called Victorious and then released another track called Breaking Bad which featured Filipino rapper Loonie. After a few months in, Michael Bars later signed with “Sony Music Philippines” on the 23rd of September 2021. On the 31st of August 2022, Michael Bars released his 3rd studio album, Breaking Bad which featured Loonie, Mike Swift and Ez Mil. Within the first 24 hours, the album surpassed 120,000 streams on Spotify. Michael Bars Currently has over 10 million streams across all streaming Platforms.
Shanya Davis is 19 year old musician from Pretoria who has 2 big hits under her
belt but still trying to figure it out how to continue conveying the message in her music. With her recent hit pop song called Don’t Know Yet which landed her the opportunity of her to be at New York to go study at the AMDA (American Musical & Dramatic Academy).
Talitha Counter is an 18-year-old RX Radio reporter, who has a condition called Meningo enchafilitis, she has her own called Talitha’s Get down where she talks all things music and other topics she is passionate about. Talitha has recently been inducted as a Bright Star at the South Africa Radio Awards in 2022 and started her first year as a university student at the University of Cape Town to
pursue her studies in media.
Linda-Anne is qualified as a therapeutic aroma-therapist and is registered with the Allied Health Profession Council of South Africa. Linda has worked as a volunteer aroma-therapist at the Bell Porter's School for Special Education in Cape Town, where she massaged children with Mental Disabilities, such as; Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and Fetal-Alcohol Syndrome. In 2004 Lindanne started working as a volunteer aroma-therapist at the Red cross War Memorial Children's Hospital in Cape Town.
They will talk about the benefits of aroma-therapy.
Johandie De Kock is from Parow Valley. She enjoys running, playing music and spending time outdoors. She is currently studying accounting in hopes to be a Charted Accountant. Despite dealing with Crohn's disease, Johandie's condition has been remission for almost 19 years and she continues to work through it.
They will talk about Johandie running the Two Oceans Half Marathon to raise money to #SaveRXRadio
Carol has comprehensive experience in nursing as well as emergency care. Carol was a charge nurse (with a focus on older persons), a surgical staff nurse and a trauma nurse at St Augustine’s Trauma Unit in KwaZulu Natal.
Carol is also a trained paramedic and was with the Rapid Response Team also based in KZN in the height of the unrest in the mid to late eighties.
She then moved focus and was a team manager providing primary complex care services to clients in their own homes. Carol has provided in house training to carers and permanent staff on the provision of complex care.
Carol oversees both facility and mobile services to clients accessing Triangle Project’s facilities. These include home based care, testing, screening, general wellbeing, health care advice and adherence monitoring, clinic visits with clients and relationship building with state facilities.
A fun fact about Carol is that she was awarded a medal for bravery when she was 24 for saving the lives of two fishermen in Wagondrift Dam in KZN.
A leader in the fight against cancer in SA, since 1931, the purpose of the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), is to offer a unique, integrated service to the public and to all people affected by cancer. It’s mission is to be the preferred non-profit leader that enables research with regards to lowering cancer risk, educating the public regarding symptoms, screening and risk reduction, and providing care and support to all people affected by cancer. Kiviet is from Makhanda in the Eastern Cape. Kiviet completed high school at Kingswood College and holds an Advanced Diploma in PR from CPUT, and has been working in the Higher Education space for over a decade. This includes at NMMU Business School, Varsity College, College of Cape and currently UCT as a Student Recruitment Officer. The role entails school presentations, career expos, qualification information dissemination by interviews and administrative work.
Jennifer is a grandmother of two RX Radio reporters, Hannah and Emily, who are 15 year old twins. Hannah suffers from Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy and Autism. Emily has her own show, "Let's Talk About It with Emily, " where she explores current affairs and topics of interest. Jennifer has been an instrumental parent at RX Radio and has recently co-led with a few other parents the formation of the SAVE RX Radio Parents Committee. Jennifer turned 70 on the 1st of December last year, and has used her birthday to help raise funds to prevent the radio station from closing.
Chené is the Reach Coordinator at A21 South Africa. She has been part of the organisation since 2020 and runs their prevention, awareness and education programmes, campaigns and events. Her Department focuses on reaching vulnerable groups in high-risk communities and providing them with the necessary tools to decrease their likelihood of being trafficked.
Rachana is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Centre of Excellence in Human Development at Wits University. Her research looks at how us children navigate our digital worlds in this day and age, and how social media could affect our mental health. To understand the challenges we face as young South Africans, Rachana uses storytelling and technology to capture the lived experiences of children.
On Zoom to talk about the topic of mental health, we have Dr Simphiwe Simelane, a PhD student at the Centre for Autism Research in Africa at UCT. Her experience as a doctor has driven her research interests which include health systems, health policy and mental health. Her PhD project focuses on strengthening child and adolescent mental health services and systems in South Africa.
Stefani du Toit – Researcher at Institute of Life Course Health Research in the Department of Global Health at Stellenbosch University – Stefani is working towards her PhD in Public Health, which focuses on adolescent depression during times of adversity. For this year’s Gauge, she contributed to research on the role of schools in promoting and protecting mental health for children.
Lizette Berry is a Senior Researcher at the Children’s Institute, University of Cape Town. She holds a Masters in Social Science, specialising in social policy and management. She has close to 20 years’ experience in child policy research and experience in child and family social work. Lizette has an interest in the care and development of children and her research focuses on parenting and early childhood development policy and violence prevention interventions.
Tamsen is a Welcome Trust Intermediate Fellow in Public Health and Tropical Medicine, as well as an Associate Professor at the DSI/NRF Centre of Excellence in Human Development at Wits. She joined us on Zoom to talk about the impact of stress on mental health and the ways of better coping with challenges that affect our mental health.

Sharon Kleintjes currently holds the position of the Vera Grover Chair and Professor of Intellectual disability in the Department of Psychiatry of Health at UCT. Her research includes recovery-orientated public mental health policy and service development, and involvement of service users with psychosocial and intellectual disability in their recovery.
Muriel has worked as the Deputy Representative since October 2019 and before that she was the Deputy Representative for the Eastern Caribbean Area and Swaziland. In light of World Cerebral Palsy Day on the 6th of October, we will be chatting to Mandy Newman – a board member of the Western Cape Cerebral Palsy Association. Mandy is 58 years old and was born with Cerebral Palsy. She moved into a Facility for Cerebral Palsy Adults after staying independently for 21 years and she currently works for a NGO for the handicapped as the Admin-Administrator.
The Gbets Rocks visited Red Cross Children’s Hospital on the 16th of September to hand out toys and cuddly teddies for the children in the wards. The Gbets Rocks are based in Paarl at Boland Park, with JP Duminy, a former Protea Player, as their Head Coach. In light of National Oral Health Month in August, we spoke to Dr Linda Greenwall from the Dental Wellness Foundation. Founded by Dr Linda in 2011, the Foundation works in the townships of Cape Town to care for the oral health of many children and elderly people every day. They started supervised tooth-brushing programmes in schools and educare centres, and now look after over 16,000 children in South Africa and over 12,000 in UK, Kenya and Nirobi. The Charity also set up soup kitchens to feed the children in Mfuleni and Khayelitsha at the start of the pandemic and have since continue this worthwhile cause.
Theo Le Roux has been a full time mural artist for the past 18 years – specialising in murals for kids’ rooms. He’s been fortunate enough to be painting murals all over South Africa and traveling to some African states too. He has also worked with NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK for many years, uplifting Children's Homes and underprivileged day-care centres. Recently he painted a new mural at Brooklyn Chest Hospital.
On the Brooklyn Chest Show, Sesethu interviewed Phumeza Tisile about TB Advocacy. In 2010, Phumeza was diagnosed with XDR-TB and against all odds, she was cured in 2013, although she was left deaf. In 2015, she got a once in a lifetime chance to hear again with Cochlear Implants. She is now a Health Activist, student at UCT, and an Advocacy Officer at TB Proof – an organisation that advocates for high quality TB prevention and care. Phumeza presented the first Drug Resistant TB Manifesto at the 67th World Health Assembly in Geneva which she co-authored. And in 2014 she was awarded the Mail & Guardian 200 Young South Africans in the category DR-TB activist.
Ntombenhle Ngwane has been working for the SAHRC for the past 10 years and she is currently working as a Project Manager for the Social Harmony National Effort (SHiNE-SA). Ntombenhle holds a Master of Management degree in the field of Public Policy from the University of Witwatersrand. She spoke to Lilah about this National Effort and how it aims to build a more caring society.

Based at the Children’s Institute, Dr Neziswa Titi holds a PhD in Psychology. She serves in civil and academic societies that focus on protecting children and developing appropriate ways of doing research with and about children in South Africa and internationally. Her research focuses on sexual violence, trauma and the development of mental health interventions for children and young people in Africa through listening to children’s voices.
Many people think that corporal punishment – or hitting children when they misbehave – is a way to set children on the right track and make them a part of a caring society. But in reality, it’s been found that corporal punishment does more harm than good and that it leads to a cycle of violence. To talk to us more about this today, we have Lucy Jamieson, a Senior Researcher at the Children’s Institute. Lucy leads and contributes to a variety of research projects focused on strengthening child protection systems and understanding approaches to reducing violence.
For this My World of Art, Layla spoke with Zaid Philander from the Butterfly Art Project. The Butterfly Art Project is an organisation that has created a network of active facilitators, who use their art therapy skills in vulnerable communities, to bring about healing and stability in children who are growing up in poverty. Zaid talked about how art can help with creativity and the healing process.

Mrs Deaf SA 2018 wants to conquer Kilimanjaro to raise funds and help deaf kids to hear. Tracy was born almost completely deaf and has lived most of her life with hearing aids and lip reading. At the age of 30 she got a cochlear implant that changed her life and now Tracy would like to share this same opportunity with children by raising funds for this life-changing procedure.
