Are you a Pilates teacher feeling confident in your craft? This episode is for you! We're diving into why exploring movement outside of Pilates can make you an even better instructor and enrich your personal life.

Discover how trying new forms of movement can deepen your understanding of the body, build stronger connections with your clients, and provide fresh perspectives for your teaching. You'll learn how embracing diverse movements can help you empathize with clients' non-Pilates activities, prevent burnout, and even boost your class attendance. Plus, find out why engaging in movement purely for yourself, without the pressure of teaching, is vital for your well-being. It's time to expand your movement horizons – your clients (and your body!) will thank you.

For most of us, our clients aren't competing at the Olympics in Paris, but they are unloading the dishwasher, sitting at a desk for eight hours, having to pick up and move to a new departure gate at the airport, and babysitting their energetic grandkids. We can prepare our clients for better outcomes in their everyday Olympic events, not just by teaching Pilates, but by building a relationship of trust and care with our clients. This episode explores the importance of building a therapeutic alliance and concrete strategies you can use in your classes.

The difficulty of every Pilates exercise can be adjusted in three dimensions: strength, flexibility, and coordination. As teachers, we can manipulate the variables of lever length, base of support, equipment settings, exercise complexity, and range of motion to make exercises more or less challenging to meet our clients' needs. I was just chatting with my British friend about this, so every time I say "lever," it's "lee-ver" not "leh-ver," because I like the long e sound.

As a Pilates teacher, what do you think is the goal of Pilates? Is it to perfectly execute the choreography? Is it to rehab an injury? To get stronger, more flexible, or more coordinated? To rejuvenate mind, body, and spirit? Is the goal of doing Pilates to meet physical activity guidelines, or is there another goal? There's no right or wrong answer, but your answer will shape how you teach, connect with clients, and approach Pilates exercises. Tune in!

Group classes are a popular way to exercise in every fitness modality, Pilates included, and you'll likely teach lots group classes over the course of your Pilates teaching career. Do you want to teach in a more positive way, but aren't sure where to start? This episode is all about framing our cues, thoughts, and expectations more positively while we teach a Pilates class. We outline three categories of Pilates students who aren't doing what you asked in class, and offer actionable strategies for working with each of them. The impact our words have on our clients goes beyond an individual exercise or class, so staying mindful and choosing to frame what we say more positively has a lasting impact. Tune in!

Today's episode describes the shift you can make from jack of all trades Pilates teacher to a specialist in one area. Benefits of specializing in one population of clientele include protecting your energy by working with people you enjoy, setting yourself apart from other Pilates teachers as an expert in the field, and creating a positive impact in a population you care deeply and are extremely knowledgeable about. OPTIMAL Theory is a theory presented by Dr. Rebecca Lewthwaite and Dr. Gabrielle Wulf outlining what they found to be the most effective strategies to teach movement based on hundreds and hundreds of motor learning studies. My advice is to start where you are and recognize that you will learn so much as you begin to teach. Tune in!

Imposter Syndrome, or a mental pattern of doubting your skills, talents, and accomplishments coupled with the fear of being exposed as a fraud, can strike at any time. Pilates teachers are especially vulnerable as we are often paid by attendance, clients may book private sessions with us when they like us, and we frequently work solo with a lot of time to be alone with our thoughts. Tune in to hear some of my strategies for confronting and overcoming imposter syndrome when it pops up in my life.

Classical mat exercises in Pilates have you spending most of your time close to the ground, in supine, prone, side-lying, seated, and kneeling, but there isn't very much standing. I took Barre Above's Pilates Focused training to look at ways to incorporate standing exercises to challenge balance, proprioception, strength, and coordination in my mat classes!

I misspoke in this episode. When discussing musicality, I say "doing the exercises with the movement" instead of "with the music." I kept going and you can figure that one out, but it's a bit confusing. I have edited the transcript to reflect what I should have said.

I started this episode wanting to discuss Pilates history, but ended up talking more about Joe as a teacher, the power and shortcomings of lineages in Pilates and yoga, and how Pilates has gotten better as it has evolved.

Definitely check out "What is the History of Pilates?" on Pilates Students' Manual for a more concise timeline and discussion of Pilates history here: https://bit.ly/studentsmanual Or you can check out the sources I drew from to really go on that deep dive.

As a Pilates teacher, you know what exercises to avoid for a pregnant client, but do you know the reasoning behind those protocols? More importantly, do you know how Pilates can help your pregnant clients stay strong, pain-free, and recover safely postpartum?

I didn't, so I took Katrina Foe's course on Personalized Pregnancy and Postpartum. It was amazing, enlightening, and a game changer for me, so I had to share some highlights of what I learned. You can check out Katrina's course here: https://bit.ly/PilatesPregnancy

As June and another month of staying home begins, I reflect on the difficulties and opportunities staying home provides. Trainings, continuing education, staying connected, being furloughed, and filing for unemployment; it's all here.Tune in to this honest discussion with me about navigating the financial uncertainty of quarantine as a Pilates teacher.

This episode was recorded prior to the murder of George Floyd and subsequent protests. I recognize that I have so much privilege that my only uncertainty is financial during a global pandemic.

Now is the time to pivot. As a full-time Pilates teacher, stopping teaching entirely is not something I'm able to do. Instead, I've transitioned to offering virtual group and private classes through video conferencing and Facebook Live. While that shift was initially intimidating, the challenges presented by a new way of teaching are also opportunities to grow as a teacher and expand your offerings.
