On December 31, a woman who died after being set on fire on the New York City subway earlier this month was identified as Debrina Kawam, 57, from Toms River, New Jersey, according to the New York medical examiner's office on Tuesday. Luigi Mangione, a Maryland native from a prominent family in the Baltimore area, is charged in both New York, where police say he fatally shot UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson, and Pennsylvania, where he was arrested Monday after an extensive manhunt. A 26-year-old man was identified as a “person of interest” in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. At a press conference on Monday, Dec. 9, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch identified the suspect as Luigi Mangione. Tisch confirmed several reports that had emerged earlier in the day, saying Mangione was recognized by an employee of a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, who then called the police. “Responding officers questioned the suspect, who was acting suspiciously and was carrying multiple fraudulent IDs, as well as a U.S. passport,” Tisch continued. “Upon further investigation, officers recovered a firearm on his person, as well as a suppressor, both consistent with the weapon used in the murder. They also recovered clothing, including a mask, consistent with those our wanted individual wore. Also recovered was a fraudulent New Jersey ID matching the ID our suspect used to check into his New York City hostel before the shooting incident.”

A Maryland woman is accused of murdering her mother, and then trying to hide the remains with the help of her daughter, according to police in Prince George's County. 44-year-old Candace Craig and 19-year-old Salia Hardy are facing charges following the death of 71-year-old Margaret Craig inside her Landover, Maryland home. "Based on additional evidence gathered at the home, as well as multiple interviews, the preliminary investigation suggests Candace Craig murdered her mother on May 23, 2023," the Prince George's County Police Department said in a statement. "The following day, Hardy helped her mother attempt to dispose of the remains."

Thieves have targeted the ATMs of at least 13 7-Eleven convenience stores and a liquor store in the D.C. area since Sunday. Six of those stores were targeted early Wednesday. The thieves are described as organized and sophisticated. They work fast and are believed to be using a stolen police radio to avoid getting caught, according to law enforcement sources. Police said the thieves use firefighters’ tools such as heavy-duty pry bars and a portable hydraulic spreader, known as the Jaws of Life – which is usually used to free people from the wreckage of car crashes. The DC Fire Academy was recently burglarized of similar equipment. The thieves intimidate employees and try to disable security systems, but not always successfully. A clerk at the 7-Eleven on South Dakota Avenue in Northeast D.C. said three people came into the store at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday and shouted orders.“[He] said ‘Don’t move!’ He gives orders, said, ‘Don’t move. Just sit!’” the clerk said. The men used a power tool to break into the ATM and ran off with cash. They tried to destroy some of the store's computer and surveillance equipment and then took off, the clerk said.

A daylong series of attacks in Austin, Texas, left four people dead and at least three wounded, and a man believed to be connected to those attacks and the deaths of two additional people near San Antonio was taken into custody, Texas authorities said. Those who died were found in two homes in Austin and a residence east of San Antonio. The injured, who were shot, included two police officers and a bicyclist, police said. None of the injuries was considered life-threatening. The suspect, who is in his 30s, was charged with capital murder, Robin Henderson, Austin's interim police chief, said at a news conference Tuesday night. His name has not been released.“We strongly believe one suspect is responsible for all of the incidents," Henderson said of the Austin attacks. - What happened: There were two active shooting incidents in the city of Lewiston — at Sparetime Recreation, a bowling alley on Mollison Way, and Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant on Lincoln Street, according to Lewiston police. State officials say the shootings began around 6:56 p.m. ET. Eyewitnesses described seeing people running away from the bowling alley. Lewiston is about 36 miles north of Portland and is the state’s second-largest city. A local councilor who spoke to CNN said the death toll could be as high as 22.
- A "person of interest": Lewiston police have identified 40-year-old Robert Card of Bowdoin as a person of interest, saying he should be “considered armed and dangerous." A University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill faculty member was killed in a shooting on campus that sent the school into a lockdown, just one week after classes started.
Naima Liggon, of Waldorf, Maryland, died in the early Sunday violence, at Metropolitan Police in the nation's capital. Police said the stabbing unfolded outside a McDonald's in the 1900 block of 14th Street, Northwest. Liggon was transported to a hospital in a private vehicle, police said. Officers responded to the hospital just after 2 a.m. on a report of a teen girl with stab wounds, and despite life-saving efforts, she died. Later Sunday, police said a 16-year-old girl, also of Waldorf, was arrested, and found in possession of a knife. She has been charged with second-degree murder while armed, assault with intent to kill, aggravated assault, felony assault, and carrying a dangerous weapon. The teen appeared at a hearing Monday in D.C. Superior Court and Detective Brendan Jasper testified that Liggon was stabbed in an argument over “sweet-and-sour sauce” among three girls outside the McDonald’s just after 2 a.m.

An Ohio police officer filmed unleashing a police dog on an unarmed Black truck driver during a July 4 traffic stop has been fired. We speak with legal scholar Madalyn Wasilczuk, who has helped represent teenagers in Louisiana attacked by police dogs and who says that dogs do not receive the proper amount of scrutiny when used in policing. "They're seen as these valorized K-9 cop heroes, and we don't focus so much on the real violence that they do," says Wasilczuk. "Videos like this really highlight the problems," Wasilczuk explains that the use of police dogs in apprehension is part of a widespread pattern of racialized violence by police that dates back to slavery.

The mother of a middle school boy who attacked a Prince George's County school bus says she’s trying to relocate her entire family, as authorities try to catch the accused 15-year-old gunman. On May 1, three teen boys pushed past a Prince George’s County school bus driver and aide in Oxon Hill and tried to shoot a middle school student in the head, but the gun misfired. Video of the attack shows a teenage attacker holding a gun to the victim’s head and chest while his two accomplices hold the victim down. All three teens then beat the victim and fled. The juvenile attacker with the gun, who authorities have identified only as "Baby K," is also a suspect in the murder of a 23-year-old woman in D.C., according to sources close to the case. Kaijah McCoy was shot and killed on May 3 inside an apartment building on Jamison St. NE. Sources said that she was the sister of one of Baby K's alleged accomplices in the bus attack, who has been caught and charged.

ELGIN, Texas (KTRK) -- Two members of an elite competitive cheerleading team in Oak Ridge were shot Tuesday morning after one of the athletes reportedly mistakenly tried to get into the wrong car after practice. The four young women drove from the Round Rock area to Woodlands Elite Cheer Company in Oak Ridge three times each week for practice. They used the Elgin H-E-B as a carpool lot for the approximately 360-mile round-trip. Just after midnight, cheerleader Heather Roth said she got out of her friend's car and opened the door to a vehicle she believed to be her own in the H-E-B parking lot. Roth said there was a man sitting in the passenger seat, so she initially panicked, thinking a stranger was inside her car, and got back into her friend's vehicle. When she noticed the man approach their vehicle, she said she rolled down the window to apologize, telling him she thought it was her car. Roth said the man threw up his hands, pulled out a gun, and started shooting. ABC13 has verified the testimony with Bastrop County sources.

A woman in the Lexus suffered life-threatening injuries and a man suffered non-life-threatening injuries.Police have not said why the driver of the Lexus fled the traffic stop, but there is body-worn camera video from the officer who stopped the car to review. According to Department of Motor Vehicles records, there are 44 outstanding citations associated with the tags on the Lexus totaling $12,300 since May.

Four men were shot and killed in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. The first double fatal shooting happened at around 1:19 p.m. in the 3300 block of D Street SE, police said. The victims were found shot inside a residence. An 18-year-old has been arrested for the fatal shooting of a Temple University police officer, authorities said. Police identified the dead man as Abdulio Arias-Lopez and said he had a bullet wound in the abdomen, according to WJLA. Barnes and his sister, who owns the home where they both lived, called the police on February 3 when Barnes said he found the body while cleaning out the backyard. Court documents say investigators found blood stains in the basement, a machete, a large knife with a sheath, four folding knives, brass knuckles, a Taser, cleaning supplies, and paint, according to WTOP. And on Wednesday, Barnes presented himself to police and said the victim was a handyman he killed back on November 4.

Police are investigating after a Minnesota Congresswoman was assaulted in the elevator of her D.C. apartment building Thursday morning. According to an incident report from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), the assault happened just after 7 a.m. on H Street in Northeast. Investigators say Rep. Angie Craig spotted the suspect in the lobby area of her apartment. The report describes the man's behavior as erratic, "as if he was under the influence of an unknown substance." Police claim Craig told the suspect "good morning" as she entered the elevator to go to her apartment. The suspect allegedly joined Craig in the elevator and began to randomly do push-ups. During the elevator ride, the suspect reportedly punched Craig on the chin and later grabbed her neck. Police say the Congresswoman was able to defend herself, throwing hot coffee at the suspect before escaping. After she escaped, Craig called 9-1-1. Officers canvased the basement-level parking lot but did not find the suspect. Rep. Angie Craig’s Chief of Staff Nick Coe released a statement following the attack, saying the Congresswoman suffered bruising but is otherwise okay. “Rep. Craig is grateful to the DC Metropolitan Police Department for their quick response and asks for privacy at this time," Craig's statement reads.
The manhunt for 24-year-old David Emory Linthicum lasted another day as he lead police on a chase that ended up in Harford County. After Linthicum made his way back to Powers Avenue he shot a detective multiple times. He then stole an officer's vehicle and started driving away. Police chased him to Fallston in Harford County.
