The “Making Airwaves” project is a partnership between Windgap Foundation and Eastside Radio 89.7 FM. “Making Airwaves” is an opportunity for people with an intellectual disability to learn radio presentation and production skills, creating their own radio show. The project has brought together a diverse group of people to share stories, news, views, interviews, humour, insights and music to listeners across the City of Sydney and Eastern Suburbs.

In this episode, we hear from Andre, Alex, Kirsty, Michelle, Gerard, and Craig and is a special NDIS focused program where questions are asked and answered about the changes to come for people Living with disabilities. We hear Interviews and discussions around fears, excitement and what is going to change for people who are eligible for NDIS.

On Tuesday 18th of April at 6pm, Eastside Radio broadcast the 12th episode of Making Airwaves!

Making Airwaves is a Windgap Foundation initiative, which allows adults who live with an intellectual disability to create their own half hour radio show.

In this broadcast we hear from the talented Lance, Alex, Toohey, Nathan, Susie and Ailsa. This fabulous group from 3 Bridges discuss what its like to live with being visually impaired or blind and challenges for families with children with a disability. Susie talks about her trip around the world on a sailing boat and being totally blind. Dating tips, Alex’s opinions on 60’s Rock n Roll music and his ever growing record collection and insightful information on the NDIS and how it will affect you!!!

You’ll learn all about flying pets, hear an interview about working out and staying in shape, dreams of being on the water on a boat, opinions and personalities of our animated hosts plus beautiful voices singing their favourite songs. Our concluding number is a particularly wild crescendo!

In this special broadcast for International Day of Disability we hear from the talented Dale, Shai, Natalie, Steve, Andre and Craig

Changes is an important theme that runs through this episode with each participant sharing something they’d like to change about themselves or their lives. We try to shed some light on what goes on inside the mind and emotions of adults with an intellectual disability. While Steve’s skill with interviewing goes from strength to strength as he now talks with Corinna on the phone from the Access All Areas Film Festival.

As usual it’s powerful stuff here on Eastside Radio but lucky for us all the broadcasters are made of some pretty strong stuff themselves!

Enjoy learning all about the concept of mainstream and what it means to Shai, Steve talks live in the studio Sasha from Accessible Arts, Joseph gives a run down of some pretty exciting movie plots and voices and Lisa shares her meeting with Michael Jackson at a difficult time in her life.

We’re so very proud of all our presenters especially as these shows simply get better and better with each broadcast!

Windgap Foundation with the support of the Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation has partnered withEastside Radio 89.7FM, to develop the ‘Making Airwaves’ project, an opportunity for people with an intellectual disability to learn radio presentation and production skills, creating their own radio show.

On Tuesday 31st March 2015, the latest team from the Making Airwaves project, ‘Breaking Voices’broadcast their program on Eastside Radio 89.7FM.

The ‘Breaking Voices’ team covers everything from paranormal activity to the Rabbitohs to information to support the visually impaired. You’ll hear brave telling’s of personal injustices and survival, favorite songs and encounters with celebrities.

On Tuesday the 30th of September 2014, the Voices of the Tigers took over Eastside Radio 89.7 FM, and recorded a half-hour show with the help of mentors and volunteers. The group of six young people aged 18-22 discussed their favourite foods, other patrons talking at the cinema, a dearly departed four legged friend and more insights, humour and music.

The radio show is designed for adults both young and old with special needs and is produced in conjunction with Windgap, The Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation and your favourite radio station. The aim is to have fun in a supportive and respectful setting, and to give a mainstream audience the opportunity to listen to insights that people with disabilities bring to our community. We could not have been prouder of this group of amazing broadcasters!
