Every week, a bunch of pretentious wise guys sit around and review the latest anime. Sometimes it all ends up making sense, but sometimes it doesn't. These...are their stories.
Hey, folks, this episode is releasing…really late. Even by my standards. We get into what’s going on with Bakacast in the episode itself, but the short version is: I’m totally burned out. I tried various ways to keep the show going, but ultimately after 398 episodes (or more than that, if you include the episodes I lost to my hard drive crashing), it was getting harder and harder for me to watch the shows and actually provide a decent analysis. Even the shows I really liked felt like a chore to watch. Ultimately, the problem was that Bakacast became a thing I felt like I had to do instead of something I wanted to do.
So we’re taking a break. I don’t know for how long, and I’m not sure what Bakacast will even look like, format-wise, if I decide to start recording episodes again. But before we went on hiatus, we decided to record an episode looking back at the last decade of anime—which coincidentally happens to be almost exactly as long as we’ve been doing Bakacast—and giving accolades to some of our favorite shows of each year.
Oh, and also we review the final episodes of some winter season shows. Did I mention I got this edited very late?

Hey, it’s the first episode we recorded after my hard drive died! Are we gonna cover the anime episodes that we talked about on those lost episodes? Absolutely not. I’m certain that would take a good year off my life if I attempted it. So yeah, we’re just gonna start our Fall 2019 reviews smack dab in the middle of the season.
Hey, folks. It’s, uh, been a while. As you may notice, this episode about the end of the summer season was recorded several weeks ago. I go into more detail on the next podcast, but the basics of what happened is this: I had been editing this podcast when my hard drive suddenly stopped working. I have three drives: one SSD and two HDDs. The one the failed happened to be the one I do all my projects on, which also means I lost the audio for three other episodes I recorded. I managed to save my audio for this episode before the drive completely died, but the first few reviews of the fall 2019 season are gone forever.
So yeah. Fun times!

On this episode of Bakacast, editing became a nightmare, because my WiFi constantly cut out and I could never tell whether or not my cohosts were hearing me (or if they were even responding). However, I was able to find moments where I could talk about a few of the shows that we stuck with, thankfully.
Before we start our reviews, though, we take a moment to offer our thoughts about the KyoAni attack. We don’t go over the actual event in detail, because that’s already been covered extensively by proper news organizations and would feel far too morbid for a silly podcast like ours to delve into anyway. Instead, we talk briefly about what the studio meant to us and what made it unique. This time on Gacha Journalism, we find a game we actually like again? Yes, we escaped the doldrums that were our last two episodes and landed into gay rhythm game paradise with Bang Dream, which is basically Love Live for band nerds. Are you prepared for positivity and also arguing about which band is objectively the best? The answer is Roselia, by the way, and Sierra can’t argue that it’s Afterglow here because she’s not writing the blog posts.
Hey, so, what’s more unsettling than a dude who turns your blood into razor blades? Turns out it’s a dude who can dismember himself with a scalpel as a combat tactic and his sidekick/gimp who eats mud. Yeah.
One this episode of Bakacast, One Punch Man continues to be Slow Pacing Show, Fairy Gone finally starts to break my resolve, Carole & Tuesday plays it safe (and generic), and Fruits Basket is our only solace in these trying times.
On this episode of JJBR, Doppio discovers the magic of incredibly sharp metal, and the hosts have a very difficult time dealing with all the visuals of scissors bursting out of a neck. At least we got rid of the cop.

On this episode of Bakacast, we go back to reviewing current anime for the Spring 2019 season, largely because we all really want to talk about Fruits Basket and One Punch Man. Also, Ikuhara and Watanabe are both directing new shows this season? Talk about an embarrassment of riches.
On this episode of Bakacast, we finish up our review of “Banana Fish”, and then we finally get around to handing out accolades to the 2018 anime season. If you’ve been paying attention to our reviews, the choices probably won’t be very surprising, but it’s nice to make it “official.”
On this episode of Bakacast, Ben, Larry and I talk about a short and sweet comedy show called “Skull-face Bookseller Honda-san”. There aren’t a whole lot of anime out there that use retail jobs as anything more than a backdrop, so it was nice to see one that actually examined the joy and despair of working a customer-facing job. Also, we cover the second third of “Banana Fish”, a show I’m still not entirely sure I like.
For our first randomly-chosen gacha game, the dice roller saw fit to give us DanMachi, a game based on an anime neither of us has seen (but Dustin has seen plenty of tweets and fanart of). Does it elevate its source material? And more importantly, was it at all worth the short amount of time we spent on it? The answer will…probably not surprise you. Join us as we try to find a character we like that doesn’t also make us feel bad for liking them.
On this episode of Bakacast, we talk about the critically acclaimed crime drama “Banana Fish”. This one…ended up being a little rougher than I expected. Ben and I have a rousing debate about the representation of gay men in the show and the story’s use of rape. I think we ended up having a very good discussion, but be warned that this episode is more serious than most Bakacasts tend to be due to the subject matter.
On this episode of JJBR, Luke explains to us how King Crimson actually works, and then we spend a few minutes considering the implications such a power has on the rest of the world. Also, we learn some neat facts about Araki’s motivations regarding the GangStars, and we yell at the boys for being way too mean to Narancia.
Hello and welcome to the first episode of Gacha Journalism, a podcast about free-to-play “gacha” games. On our introductory episode, Sierra and I give a brief overview of what gacha games are and some of the common terminology we’re going to be throwing around. Then we dive right into Granblue Fantasy, one of the most influential (and profitable) gacha games. We talk about what makes it so appealing, if its friendly to those who don’t want to spend a dime, and the impact it’s had on legislation. Most importantly, though, we answer the question: how gay is it?

Isn’t it weird that there was basically no direct commentary on the weird gender dynamics? Did anyone actually know how they wanted the story to wrap up before the final episode? We may never know. On this episode of Bakacast, we review the first 7 episode of Geneshaft, a very weird show about DNA, buggy mecha, and using one song over and over again because it’s the only memorable one you have. We also talk about Fireworks, the latest movie produced by Shaft and directed by Akiyuki Simbo. So it should be great, right? We’ve loved a lot of their stuff, yeah? Well, things a little more tricky this time.
On this episode of the rewatch, Giorno, Fugo, and Abbacchio have a fun field trip to the ruins of Pomepeii, where absolutely nothing could possibly go wrong. We discuss: the ambiguous physics of Mirror Worlds, Abbacchio being a lame edgelord, the evolution of Fugo’s fashion choices, and whether or not all this weirdness is starting to get to our good boy Giorno.

For our first addition, we spend some time talking about both the beauty and existential dread of Land of the Lustrous (arguably the best-looking CG anime so far). And for our second, I gush about Recovery of an MMO Junkie and how it somehow managed to get me to watch a rom-com.

On this episode of Bakacast, we introduce the new season of Hell Girl into our weekly rotation. This is the first time I've ever watched Hell Girl. I was not entirely prepared for Hell Girl. Other things I wasn't entirely prepared for: Princess Principal having a nearly flawless second episode, and Made in Abyss being a perfect mix of whimsical darkness.
On this episode of Bakacast, I manage to figure out and break down my mixed feelings on Kakegurui, we all express our disappointment in Katsugeki Touken Ranbu (and our surprise that the debut episode of Princess Principal was actually quite solid), and we dissect why Vatican MIracle Examiner's first episode felt so dang awkward.
On this episode of Bakacast, Seikaisuru Kado finally ends, and boy were we not prepared for what the ending had in store for us. After boggling at the finale for a while, we get into the first new episodes of the summer 2017 season, which include crazy-faces, magic robots, and a Fate/Whatever intro episode that's actually exciting for once.
All good things must come to an end, even Little Witch Academia and Eccentric Family. We bid farewell to these to excellent shows the only way we know how: by analyzing them with far too much depth.
On this episode of Bakacast, Seikaisuru Kado surprises us all by having the weirdest of all plot developments: going back to the dawn of the universe. We reviewed other stuff of course, but it's kinda hard to think about anything else.
On this episode of Bakacast, Aaron, Ben and I discuss the full implications of Seikaisuru Kado going completely buck wild and what it maybe should have payed more attention to. Also, I propose my theory for an alternate reading of Little Witch's themes, Rage of Bahamut gives us one of the few tragic-backstory flashbacks I've seen done well in anime, and Ben and I break down the highs and lows of Gundam Thunderbolt's seventh episode.
On this episode of Bakacast, My Hero Academy delivers unto us one of the most beautiful animation sequences I've seen in a show in recent years. Also, Alice gets mildly interesting again, Little Witch starts tying all its narrative threads together, Virgin Soul is shockingly funny considering everyone is in prison, and I nerd out over Eccentric Family. Also we finally get a hint that things might end up going bad in Kado.
It's finally happened. Our favorite doofus from the original season of Rage of Bahamut has come back to grace our screens. Everything is now right with the world (save for Amira still being locked away forever, but I'll take what I can get). Also on this episode: we spend about 20 minutes thoroughly dissecting Kado, and I--in complete seriousness--compare Eccentric Family with Bakemonogatari.
On this episode of Bakacast, Ben and I start off the show by talking about what's been going on in the Attack on Titan manga and the chapters we're really looking forward to seeing adapted. We then move on to Alice to Zouroku--which seems to be showing signs of life again--and get very excited about the dramatic developments happening in Little Witch Academia and Rage of Bahamut. Oh yeah, and we talk briefly about Re-Creators.
On this episode of Bakacast, Aaron, Ben and I once again have a lot of fun diving deep into Seikaisuru's events, implications and eccentricities. But you know what really makes me happy? The episode of Little Witch we review this time is focused on Diana, aka the best character in the show. I finally get a chance to elucidate my interpretation of her character and motivations, and you better believe I took that chance and ran with it.
On this episode of Bakacast, I over-indulge the literary critic inside me. But can you really blame me, when Seikaisuru Kado, Eccentric Family and Gundam Thunderbolt all air in the same season and give me so much juicy writing to pick apart and savor? Sometimes anime is pretty okay.
On this episode of Bakacast, we finally get around to talking about the new Mobile Suit Gundam: Thunderbolt episodes. Turns out we still love Thunderbolt, y'all. Also discussed on this episode: the tactical usage of summoned hands, why Seikaisuru Kado not having character arcs is actually okay, and now Nina from Rage of Bahamut is slowly growing on us.
As the spring season leaves the honeymoon phase, we start to turn a more critical eye toward some of the shows that have made it this far. And by "some of the shows" I mostly mean just Grimoire of Zero. And by "we" I mostly mean myself. On the bright side, I do catch up with Seikaisuru Kado and find myself impressed by it. Also, Ben kept his word from last week and marathoned Kemono Friends. Did he enjoy it? Will he pass on the infection to me, as well? Stay tuned for the answer. (It's "yes." The answer is "yes.")
For those of you finding this podcast through Audio Entropy, hello! This is a weekly anime podcast that reviews and riffs on the current season's shows. For this week, we cover a bunch Spring 2017's new offerings, including two sequels that we never thought we were going to get. Do they measure up to their first seasons? Well, I'm not just gonna tell you here. That'd defeat the purpose of the podcast existing.
So, RSS feed mergers won't work like I thought they would. Since a merger of two feeds eliminates/overwrites all the tags iTunes needs in order to publish a podcast, I won't be able to use that method.
The good news: since I give iTunes the Feedburner URL (instead of the source RSS URL), once I swap feeds everyone currently subscribed to Bakacast will automatically get the new episodes. There will be no effort required on your part to keep up with the new stuff.
The bad news: all the old, Libsyn-hosted content will disappear from the iTunes feed. If you ever want to listen to older episodes, you can use the media player or directly download links available at Project Haruhi; also, I will also provide the URL for the old Libsyn RSS that you can manually add to whatever podcast software you use (like iTunes or Pocket Casts).
Not only does this episode of Bakacast mark the end of the Winter 2017 season, but it also marks the end of me hosting these things on Libsyn. Starting at the next episode, we'll be part of the Audio Entropy podcast network. I will, however, still be posting shownotes like this on Project Haruhi in addition to Audio Entropy; and assuming an RSS feed merger works like I think it should, there shouldn't be a need to swap RSS subscriptions. Ultimately, this change will save me a whole lot of money each year and (hopefully) bring in more listeners for both Bakacast and the podcasts my friends are doing over at Audio Entropy.

Now that the winter season has begun in earnest, we dig into what it has to offer us. Which is...a mixed bag, honestly. Some good, some dull, some bad. And then there's Hand Shakers, a show that must be watched to truly understand how thoroughly and magnificently terrible it is. I do my best to articulate the sights and sounds one experiences when subjected to Hand Shakers, but human language can only communicate so much. Please, watch Hand Shakers and understand my suffering.
Also that Maid Dragon show is a very early contender for surprise of 2017, so that's certainly something.

Due to scheduling difficulties and life interfering, we were forced to skip a few weeks of recording. So of course the logical thing to do was to recap, like, four episodes of each series we're watching, because we're a group of people who make great life choices. Long story short: Drifters loses its appeal but everything else stays pretty much on course. Overall this has been a pretty impressive season; and judging by the what I'm seeing for winter, we're about to face a pretty steep drop in watchable shows.
Also, there was a bit of an unavoidable technical problem with this episode. Megan's computer fan caused a noticeable high-pitched buzz in the recording, but one can't simply turn off a computer fan (it tends to end badly for the computer). I did my best to remove as much as I could, but it will likely still be noticeably when she talks. I apologize for any bother this causes.

On this episode of Bakacast, I debut our new opening song composed by Mitchell Dill. It's not the final version, but I figured it'd be fun to switch things up post-episode-300. Also, I reveal my plans for what the next season will bring. Basically, I'll be taking a brief hiatus from the normal Bakacast schedule (since I've been watching, recording and editing for 6 years straight now). Instead of doing weekly reviews, I'll instead be going through the first two arcs of JoJo's with three people who've never watched the show before (plus Megan). It took a while, but I promised you that Luke would review SUPER LOVERS; and by golly did I get him to review SUPER LOVERS. We usher in what is technically the first week of the winter season with a mercifully short episode for a change. It's just under an hour! AMAZING! Since most shows from fall were done and the majority of winter shows hadn't aired yet, we padded the episode out a bit with reviews of the first two episodes of Yamato 2199 and the first Mobile Suit Gundam: Thunderbolt OVA. Considering all of us on Bakacast are sci-fi nerds, both of those shows being very good made us quite happy. It certainly makes up for KyoAni going from the critically-acclaimed Sound Euphonium to the dreck that is Musaigen no Phantom World.

Now, look, I will concede that there may have been a time in the past where Hanekawa was one of the weakest cast members. But now ain't that time, and if you're not on board with the new and improved Catekawa, then I'm afraid I'm gonna have to ask you to leave the Cool Anime Club. Anyway, aside from the satisfying conclusion of Sodachi Lost where Hanekawa dunks on Ougi, Ushio to Tora decides to mix time travel with lots of murder, Utawarerumono has yet another dang bath house episode, Gundam gets some sweet space battles, Concrete Revolutio compels me to try and explain the concept of the Great Lakes Avengers, and One Punch Man gets a lot more shounen.
Oh yeah, and Perfect Insider is basically still...uh...perfect.

This ended up being a pretty jam-packed fall season. To the point where--if Heavy Object is the only show we drop--it'd take around 6 hours to watch everything. That's...a little insane, so we'll probably end up making cuts to shows that aren't bad but also aren't quite interesting enough. So I apologize in advance if I make an executive decision to stop reviewing your favorite show; but in my defense, I would probably go insane doing this every week.
Also, during listener questions I end up rambling about the various sources I get my remixes from.Some of them come from me discovering them randomly through social media channels, but I also list off a few sources I regularly turn to for ending music. In any case, Dragon Ball Super reminds us that some characters should just be forgotten about (and that the English dub is way better), Ranpo Kitan completely fails at the "mystery" part of a murder mystery, Shimoneta ends with an exciting twist, Gatchaman Crowds ends with an infuriating twist, and God Eater moves so slowly that it forces Aaron and me to come up with ludicrous theories to keep ourselves entertained.

On this episode of Bakacast, Luke gives us our long-awaited review of Triage X. Unfortunately, it is not nearly as ridiculous as Highschool of the Dead. But then, how many shows truly are?
As far as the reviews of the (mostly) not-terrible shows go, we love Jotaro playing tag with a vampire, we hate Shirou continuing to harp about ideals in the middle of a much more interesting battle, we're divided on how well Arslan is telling it's story, we have no idea what Punch Line is doing anymore, we're afraid that Sidonia is going to some very dark places soon, and we're as super-stoked as the Logicomas to be hanging out with Makoto Kusanagi again.

In anime news, though, Larry gets back on board with JoJo's, Aaron and I attempt to puzzle out exactly how stupid Shirou is, Sidonia really gets its money's worth out of that squeaky-toy sound effect, and Kick Heart delights us. Well, most of us.
Oh, and we go through the shows we have to look forward to in the summer season. The verdict? A big ol' shrug of our shoulders. Seriously, outside of, like, two shows, we have no idea how solid next season's gonna be.

This is not a normal episode of the podcast. I created it for the sole purpose of letting you know that we're skipping a week due to technical snafus, and that you should head to the blog (www.projectharuhi.net) to get my impressions of last week's shows. As an apology for the screw-up, I'll try to get the next episode edited and posted much sooner than I normally do.
I don't know why I'm watching anything other than Blood Blockade Battlefront. Like, what's even the purpose of anything else? JoJo's is cool, I guess, but the only characters worth a damn are Jotaro and Dio (and I guess we can count Joseph for his meme potential). Fate/Stay Night has decided that endlessly repeating a stupid argument is way more interesting than, you know, plot development, fight scenes, and its only remaining female characters (who happen to be the best ones it has). Sidonia has fallen into the abyss of endless fanservice. And Arslan is...well...it definitely ain't Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
Next week, I'll just skip all the other shows and watch BBB eight times.

I chose the image for this episode largely because I like seeing Shinji in physical distress, which happens to be the only satisfying thing about F/SN right now. Thankfully, JoJo is finally out of the doldrums and back to being ridiculous in an entertaining way. Punch Line surprises us by finally showing us its true power level (and revealing something about its main character that I really hope I have the correct interpretation of, because it'd be really cool). Nanoha Vivid, however, has started to make me feel uncomfortable while watching it. And Paranoia Agent finishes by leaving us somewhat baffled and mildly unsatisfied.

I have been waiting for this episode of JoJo's for so long. I am so happy we can finally talk about it. And I am also very happy that Nanoha Vivid has finally gotten around to showing its titular character fighting. Took it long enough. Meanwhile, Fate/Stay Night continues to mistakenly believe that anyone cares about Archer and Shirou's mutual angst, Blood Blockade makes even filler episodes entertaining, I still hate that asshole bard in Arslan, and Punch Line is actually really interesting now? Huh.

So Luke finally got around to watching Isuca, which he colorfully described as a "gas chamber." Which I guess means he liked it? Yeah, that's how metaphors work. By the end of his segment, I felt a little bad about what I did, so I gave him a much easier assignment for next time: Triage X. I'm a good friend.
In other news, we find that Nanoha Vivid is much better at being shounen than it is at being slice-of-life, Blood Blockade vampires are way better than most vampires these days, and Yamada-kun might secretly be the best rom-com this season.

Now, I know what you're going to say. "Dustin, did you really expect some of these shows on your list to be good?" No, of course I didn't. But I was also hoping that some of the less-obvious-stinkers would be, well, slightly above mediocre. Or at least not insulting. So hey, hats off to Shokugeki no Souma and Denpa Kyoushi for failing to clear my low expectations even harder than I thought they would. That was a hell of an achievement.
On the plus side, Kekkai Sensen is everything I hoped it would be and more. So yeah, just watch that show, I guess. Everything else is superfluous.

And Hol Horse can only do so much to salvage this arc. I love you, Araki. But sometimes I really hate you.

So...I guess all you people who kept talking about Build Fighters weren't just crazy. Let no one say I'm not willing to admit when I'm wrong.
Unless you're dissing Tari Tari. That show was pretty good, and I don't care what anyone else says.
Also, I'm certain we reviewed Yuri Kuma 11, but even after listening to the podcast to edit it I have no idea where our review of it actually is. So yeah. It's somewhere in there, probably.

On this episode of Bakacast, Luke finds that the ending of Aquarion EVOL (as with suprsingly many mecha anime) isn't nearly as interesting to him as the beginning. It turns out Luke's willpower was not quite as bottomless as I imagined, since his review of "Testament of Sister New Devil" clearly shows signs that his soul is being heavily damaged. I'm hoping my next assignment will bolster his spirits (or at least won't make him feel like he should be monitored by the FBI). I've also decided that this will be the last week we'll be reviewing every show weekly, so after reviewing some of these shows I ask the other co-hosts if they feel it should go on the ever-three-weeks schedule. For convenience, I'll mark the ones we singled out in the timestamp list. Finally, we take a break from retro-reviews to finally watch "Time of Eve," a movie we really shouldn't have put off for as long as we did. This episode of Bakacast was recorded in a San Antonio hotel that my friend Luke and I were staying at for PAX South. Just when I thought Sword Art Online wasn't going to bog down its new arc in clumsily-handled drama, it goes and proves me wrong. Hopefully it won't be quite as migraine-inducing as Sion's childhood trauma. That's not the end to this week's disappointment, either. Gundam finally wears out its welcome, which means I once again have no good mecha shows to watch this season. My only hope now is for Shingeki no Bahamut to somehow end with Favaro and Kaisar piloting giant, steel golems. You laugh, but Rita already has a pseudo-rocket-punch.

So, this week is the week where we finally lose our patience with some shows. Gundam has one more shot to find its footing and become something that isn't mediocre. April Is Your Lie has failed to capture the attention of anyone besides Ben, and even he's not enthusiastic about all of us covering it. While Shirobako isn't bad (I actually think it's quite good), its style of humor just doesn't mesh well with me, which makes it painful to watch. And though Garo is still enjoyable enough for me to forgive its flaws, if it stays in its current holding pattern for much longer I might give it the boot.

So I'm not gonna bother, because it's late and I'm really sleepy.

I'm starting to struggle to figure out what to write here, because this fall season has been alarmingly stable. There haven't been any egregious episodes for typically good shows (yet), nor have their been fantastic episodes for shows that are kinda okay (yet). To use a strained nautical metaphor, it's steady as she goes with not a storm in sight. That said, there have been some warning signs. Our interest in Gundam and Garo is starting to wane, because we're not really sure what the shows are working toward. And Pyscho-Pass is beginning to push me away with how much it feels like it's been retreading from the first season. I'm crossing my fingers that these shows don't end up taking a slow descent into Terribleville.

So I guess it's time for fall. I was kind of hoping that most everything would suck so I could take a bit of a breather this season, but since when does the universe ever do what I want it to? Instead, we have a surprisingly large and varied stable of decent-to-great shows that will likely only get larger once we review Parasyte and Psycho-Pass S2. Thankfully, there's at least one show that straight-up sucks so we can have a bit of fun ripping it to shreds. Take a wild guess which one it is.

The mediocrity keeps on rolling in this episode of Bakacast. It's a bit of a depressing week on Bakacast. JoJo is merely mediocre, Argevollen and Zankyou no Terror are downright stupid, and the artists of Gun Gale Online have taken a sudden interest in really making sure we notice Shinon's butt. And despite our reticence to drop shows this late into the season, there has been at least one casualty. I'd tell you to try and guess which one, but my rigid formatting standards require me to spoil it in the timestamps below; so it would be a bit pointless, wouldn't it?
On the other hand, we also get to watch Hanamonogatari, so it ain't all bad.

This week on Bakacast, I jinx it by saying we're breezing through the reviews around the 11-minute mark. Turns out that was just a fluke, and it's just as long as all the others. I'm experiencing Bleach flashbacks all of a sudden.
And so one of our winter season shows finally ends, not with a bang but a curt nod of approval and a quiet muttering of the words, "Yeah, that was fine." The last Metroid in in captivity... but the fanboys are not at peace.
On this week's Bakacast, we delve into the world of video games and examine how the new Wii game Metroid: Other M completely destroys Samus Aran's character. Since both Dustin and I are pretty big Metroid fans, there's plenty of hilariously impotent fanboy rage thrown around. After that, we get around to our usual anime reviews, wherein we address the issue of whether or not protagonists such as HotD's Takashi should have sex. Finally, we answer some decidedly serious Twitter questions as best we can.
