Mambo Sauce is a music-heavy podcast diving into American Roots music. Host Tom Moore digs into the massive vinyl music collection left to Tom by his late friend, Neil Otto Raabe. Hear the stories of the artists, as well as the tales of Tom, Neil, and friends discovering their music.

Episode #4 is entitled “Students to Masters” as we explore the 1979 to 1998 work of The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Roomful of Blues, Kim Wilson, The Hollywood Fats Band, and the James Harman Band. *Harmonicist/vocalists James Harman and Kim Wilson, guitarist vocalist Duke Robillard, guitarists the late great Hollywood Fats, David “Kid” Ramos and Jimmie Vaughan, saxaphonist/vocalist Greg Piccolo, and their superb bandmates learned the music of the great masters by studying their recordings, observing their live performances, sitting in with them, touring with them, recording with them, and establishing friendships with these mentors and heroes. In the process, these important links in the generational chain have become masters themselves! They are heavily represented in the Neil Raabe collection and we were fortunate to have seen all of them live!
“Soul City-Part 2” celebrates the stellar 1965-1971 works of vocalist/guitarist Clarence Carter, vocalist/guitarist Little Milton Campbell, vocalist James Carr, vocalist OV Wright, and vocalist Wilson Pickett.
These cuts were recorded in Memphis, Muscle Shoals, and Chicago, and feature great stories, great grooves, great horn arrangements, and emotive vocal performances that define the genre of 60’s soul! Thomas discusses how he and Neil grew up as this incredible music was created, how he and Neil gravitated to it, and how Thomas gravitated to Neil and his unique personality! For maximum listening experience for this episode, fire up the grill, ice down the Miller Hi-Life and Schlitz malt liquor, and clear some room for dancing!
"House On Fire" dips into a very different compartment of Neil's collection. The energy and wild abandon of rockabilly is familiar to many through the early works of Carl Perkins, Elvis, Merle Travis, Wanda Jackson, and other greats. We showcase rockin’ 1976-2004 performances by Los Angeles supergroup The Blasters, Detroit area guitarist/vocalists Steve Nardella and George Bedard, San Diego's legendary Paladins, and the late great guitarist/vocalist Jimmy Lee Fautheree (along with guitar genius/vocalist Deke Dickerson). Great songwriting, superb guitar work, and powerful vocals! As a bonus, enjoy some burning piano from Gene Taylor and Mark "Mr B" Braun, and a guest appearance by (Little Richard alumni) the late great Lee Allen on sax. Thomas details tracks and accounts of he and Neil’s experiences involving these dynamos!

Mambo Sauce 2020, Episode 1, Year 2: Featuring: Lowell Fulson, Hound Dog Taylor, Willie Dixon's Big 3 Trio, Johnny Shines, and Wynonie Harris! We mambo to the the smooth swing of guitarist/vocalist Lowell Fulson, the raw and raucous boogie of slide guitarist/vocalist Hound Dog Taylor and his Houserockers, the swing and soulful 3 part vocal harmony of Willie Dixon's Big 3 Trio, the solo acoustic guitar and other-worldly vocals of Johnny Shines, and the sax- driven, double entendre laden jump of vocal dynamo Wynonie Harris. Maximum old school cool here, and Neil Raabe's impeccable taste shines in this, as in all episodes. After 40 plus minutes of music, Thomas wanders through accounts of he and Neil's witnessing Fulson, Dixon, and Shines in live performances!

Episode #7 is entitled “Chicago: Pioneers and Monoliths 1966-1977”. It focuses on the brilliant and emotive singing, songwriting, and playing of Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Eddie C Campbell, Fenton Robinson, and Magic Sam. These monoliths created exciting new music that stands as excellent 5 decades later. Included are cuts from Sam’s Delmark recordings “West Side Soul” and “Black Magic”, Otis’s “Right Place Wrong Time”, Eddie C’s “King Of The Jungle”, Fenton’s Alligator Label LP’s “Somebody Loan Me A Dime” and “I Hear Some Blues Downstairs”, and the Junior Wells/Buddy Guy collaboration “It’s My Life Baby”. Tom takes us back to when he and Neil witnessed incredible performances by Otis Rush and Fenton Robinson at South Bend’s (Indiana) Vegetable Buddies, and shares insights on Magic Sam that were related to him by the fabulous late great Hollywood Fats! Justin provides personnel info, as many of the supporting players/sidemen on these recordings are also significant figures in Blues History.

Ann Arbor's Finest, explores three outstanding artists who have been fixtures in the Ann Arbor/Detroit music scene for over four decades. Guitarist/vocalist George Bedard, pianist/vocalist Mark "Mr. B" Braun, and guitarist/vocalist/harmonicist Steve Nardella are excellent interpreters of blues, boogie woogie, rockabilly, swing, and classic rock and roll. Also featured is an interview by Justin with promoter, historian, record producer, and musician Fred Reif, who has been closely associated with our 3 featured artists since the early 1970's! Fred also discusses his new book "Tell 'Em 'Bout The Blues" an account of his relationships with Detroit area legends Lazy Lester, Lightning Slim, Doctor Ross, Eddie Burns, and many others.
