In this weeks episode, Gabby has no choice but to overhear obnoxious Nashvillians. We discuss how you can therapize yourself out of the ebb and flow of human relationships, Mel's copyrighted idea of a potato van (any van, really) and the ideal way to eat a chocolate bar.

Order, order, Gabby wants order! After a brief flit about from thing to thing (too excited this episode), we settle into a conversation about gardening podcast ASMR, the absolute poo heap that is Taylor Frankie Paul and the SLOMW franchise. Hey Gang! Today's episode is a full swing from kindle flies to baby's first stage performance to love and sex therapy with Esther Perel and a deep dive into indigenous theory around feminism (from Lynn Smart's 'The Soul of Money') and the bird of humanity to what it means to be the adult in the room and be somewhat trauma-informed in a world that often feels...traumatised? Love you all. Thanks as ever for listening!

This week Gabs brings Mel up to speed on a current substack scandal where a high profile celeb got low-key bullied off the platform. We discuss the ethics around celebrities monetising their audience, policing peoples presence. It's niche. It's a little granular and we have unformed opinions. When do we paywall? Why do women get scrutinised for this stuff so much more? Don't forget! The Making An Effort Podcast is a listener supported podcast - BEHIND A PAYWALL! Imagine! This week we cover plenty of ground. A new TV watch that has had Mel in stitches, Gabby's neighbourly updates, tupperware thieves., a story about a tampon that really is NSFW and should come with a trigger warning. Yeesh. Kind of regretting that one.

Poor Gabs is sick this week so instead of leaving you hanging, we called on Mel's husband Dave to stand in as co-host. Today we are joined by a super special guest - Mel's big brother, Tim! Tim is a teacher, performer and choir conductor and along with his love of the Bravo franchises, has so generously shared his story of coming out as gay in his thirties with us. Tim reflects on his journey to owning his sexuality and the impact that has had on his relationships, his sense of self, and his faith.
Tim's story is his own experience but we're sure you'll agree, it's an honest and vulnerable share, full of wisdom, bravery and love that so many will be inspired and encouraged by.
You can find Tim's singing page here: https://www.facebook.com/timreynoldssings/
Tim mentions Inclusive Faith - a website supporting those that identify as christian and LGBTQ+ as well as their allies. https://inclusivefaith.lgbt/

Gabby is worried that we don't have enough of a bedrock for our episodes but Mel is embracing of the whimsy. Very mixed messages/role reversal for us. Honest to God, this episode is delirium. Neither of us were in good states of minds to have any business recording a podcast, but nevertheless, we ended up talking about noisy cars, listeners having questions about getting over exes and we had a ridiculous discussion about nuts. This week Gabby brings a mystery to the hive mind...why is everyone obsessed with Lana Del Ray? Have we missed something? Mel cannot help because she confuses Lana Del Ray with Florence and The Machine. Mel has a rant about the incessant admin of having to charge devices and discovers a new niche business idea involving apple sauce. Enjoy!

Welcome back! Annoyingly the first 6 mins of our recording didn't record - wah! So we jump in a little ways into our convo this episode. You missed a lengthy chat about if it's patronising to say "love that for you!" - jury's still out, but I think it depends on your accent...
Also in this episode we're discussing unproblematic celebrities. Is it possible? Are they out there? Is a fall from grace inevitable for everyone when they are put on a pedestal? (we get into the recent Lizzo stuff here too).

We've got a fun little episode for you today - plenty of tangents and a few moments setting the stage for this summer and all the things we'd love to do; trips we're taking, memories we want to set unrealistic expectations for. You know the drill.

In today's episode, Gabby and Mel catch up and find out some brand new information about each other (a rare thing this many years into a friendship)!
From morning routines to new work opportunities, we dive into four big questions for each other to get to the heart of what is happening in each of us in our lives in this season.
If you'd like to support this podcast and get access to some BTS shenanigans, we'd love to welcome you to join our Patreon for just $5 (£4) a month. You can check it out here.
A bit niche, but we have things to say about Love Is Blind Season Four and we know lots of you do too. So this episode is our full review, hot takes and gripes about all the drama of this time around.
You know we love our patrons and it means so much to us to have your support, so if you fancy joining our Patreon community to receive more BTS stuff from the podcast and help us cover the costs of production, you can do that here.
At the top of this episode we want to let you know that we’re going to be talking about subjects relating to spiritual and religious abuse, including trauma and the adjacent issues that might present within that context of experience. If these feel like tender topics for you, we want you to give you a heads up to take your time with this episode and even though we hope that our conversation will be an empowering one with plenty to learn from our guest and a hopefully a feeling of hope for anyone experiencing this in the past or present as we converse - please feel free to skip it if now isn’t the right time.
With that being said - we want to introduce you to our special guest for today’s episode:
Dr. Laura Anderson is a therapist, trauma resolution and recovery coach, writer, educator, and creator who specializes in complex trauma with a focus on domestic violence, sexualized violence and religious trauma and is the founder and director of the Center for Trauma Resolution and Recovery, working with clients who have experienced high demand/high control religions, adverse religious experiences, cults, and religious trauma.
In this episode Laura shares from her own story of spiritual abuse and we talk about what religious and spiritual trauma and abuse can look like; how to identify red flags within religion and spiritual spaces and what the process of healing requires. We talk through the common after-effects of how high control environments impacts us in mind and body. This is a fascinating conversation, and we really hope you find it hopeful and supportive.
You can find Dr. Laura's work here.
And her new book, 'When Religion Hurts' is available for pre-order now here.
Back with another round the world episode discussing Mel's new beauty products, Gabby's best advice for not getting burgled and a brief discussion on how far is too far in the age of cancel culture and accountability.

Content Warning - we're talking about a few adulty things in this episode, so if you usually blast this around your kids, you might want to pop some headphones in this time
Honestly, with some heaviness of the world the last week, this conversation was a ridiculous escape. We talk about how much we'd have to make on Only Fans to admit we're doing it, Gabby's flat feet, Mel's netball fundraiser (which you can donate to here if you fancy being charitable) dog poo and Gwyenth's ski trial. Enjoy!

We are truly delighted to share our conversation with author and all around beautiful human, Sarah Norquoy! You're going to love her as much as we do!
Sarah lives in the Orkney Islands, way up off the top of Scotland and we talk with her about island living and how sea swimming changed her life when she hit 50.
Sarah shares with us beautifully about the honour and pain of caring for her parents who both have dementia and how social media has been a supportive place for her as she navigates that.
Sarah's memoir 'Salt On My Skin', all about her foray into sea swimming while her mother's memory began to decline was released in 2020 and you can buy it here and find Sarah's honest, fun and inspiring IG here.
Back in the hot seat this week, answering some of your burning questions from the existential to the mundane and practical. We're very much non-experts but really enjoy thinking out loud about some of the great questions you have - hope you enjoy!

Trigger Warning We want to give you a heads up that in this episode we talk about some pretty sensitive topics around sex, sexuality, religion and shame. Whilst we believe what we talk through is super important and ultimately hopeful, if this brings up difficult issues for you, look after yourself as you listen.
We are DELIGHTED to be joined once again by songwriter, musician and our all around legend friend, Audrey Assad! Together we decided to dedicate today's episode to returning to the topic of purity culture. Between the three of us, we are sharing how purity culture has shaped us, and the ways we are healing from it piece by piece.
We really hope you find something healing in us sharing our experiences. Feel free, as always, to reach out to us via email hello@makinganeffortpodcast.com with any of your thoughts.

Do you have a bestie? Are we too old to have actual best friends anymore? Are best friends a thing reserved for carefree days when you could spend all of your time with your one person? What happens when you see your friends hanging out without you?
How do guys do friendship? It's a mystery. We truly don't know.
These are all the topics we're exploring today. It's a friendship-extravaganza. Welcome.

We thought it was about time we revisited a conversation about our bodies and body image. In this episode we share a little about the evolution of our mindset around body image; how tricky it can be to stay connected to the goodness of our bodies, how anxiety shows up, the nonsense of 'bouncing back' after having babies and all the ways we are trying to be compassionate towards ourselves and feel at home in the skin we're in.

We also get into the spiralling world of Mormon Momtok and the latest "soft swinging" scandal you absolutely don't need to know about but is totally worth a deep dive. Enjoy!
We would love for you to welcome to MAE the fellas that we've spent lots of time talking about on the pod over the last 60+ episodes - our lovely husbands!
It felt like a bit of a double date, but without the pints and snacks and we had a lot of fun bringing Chris and Dave in for a good old chat and a little spousal quiz...

Today we get to talking about the lesser known women that we have found inspiring. You might be surprised by Mel's niche historical choice and Gabby's 90's throwback icon. This epsiode also heavily features the escapades of another one of our sheroes; Mel's mother in law, Iris. Enjoy!
Tune in this week to hear about all the small things that are making us ridiculously happy.
From This Is Us to cowboy boots to good old fashioned boiled sweets like your granny always had in her pocket, Mel and Gabs are dishing out some of the things giving them a spring in their step right now.
Shownotes can be found here: https://www.makinganeffortpodcast.com/episodes
This week Mel has some beef to get off her chest about the way Americans say things and then hot on the heels of some big political moments in both our countries, this week we are talking about what it looks like to engage with politics, contentious issues and be an ally in private and public.

This week Gabby shares about her very real, very relatable rogue facial hair. This weeks episode features a lengthy chat on why people aren't called by their ACTUAL names and some of the ways we sometimes think we're letting the side down as feminists.
