In Episode 85: Baskets of Wrong, Ariel is away, starring in her own spinoff adventure, but Kelvin and Pat are joined by special guest Melissa Kaercher to enthusiastically discuss the epic conclusion to the Second Doctor’s run, The War Games! Join us for facial hair and another phantom Master! Regeneration and glasses-fashion! A digression about tabletop wargames, and a shout-out to the late Peter Watkins, director of the non-Doctor Who 1966 TV drama The War Game, who recently died at the age of 90. All this and Devo HQ!
In Episode 84: Shrinkage!, the team discuss a trio of tiny-person episodes: the First Doctor adventure Planet of Giants, the Third Doctor adventure Carnival of Monsters, and the Fourth Doctor adventure The Invisible Enemy. Plus, Pat races through a library’s worth of Doctor Who book recommendations, Kelvin shares an impromptu lecture on Polari, and Ariel gives us all the giggles. You too can join in the fun when you experience Shrinkage!
Note: Ariel relates her trip to Perivale in Episode 67: Kids Love Murder.
In Episode 83: Unicorns and Phantom Masters, the gang and special guest Tony Karna visit the Land of Fiction to uncover Doctor Who‘s relationship with other forms of fictionality. Listen as we discuss The Mind Robber, Black Orchid and The Unicorn and the Wasp, touching on a lot of strange pain points along the way: Agatha Christie! The British culture industry! Brothers hidden in rooms! Kelvin’s Masterpiece Theater PTSD! A surprise appearance by Philip Larkin! We may be scared, nervous and unsure, but we at Get off My World are just gonna podcast through it all!
In this particularly sexy-voiced Episode 82: Time and the Scrimshaw, Kelvin, Ariel and the entity known as “Pat” discuss some previously underexplored corners of Doctor Who: First up, one of the very earliest First Doctor adventures, Marco Polo; and next, the cactus-heavy and thankfully non-yellowfaced Fourth Doctor episode Meglos.
And there’s more! Mysterious audio engineer Tony Karnaemerges from behind his headphones to chat with us about the past and future of the podcast.
But where is Joshua Scrimshaw?, you ask. What a question… the final answer will shock and surprise you! Find out in this extra-special blood-sweat-and-glue episode of Get Off My World!
In Episode 81: Skritches for the Garm, the gang are joined by a very special guest, the embodiment of galactic badness Himself, The Black Guardian, as we discuss the Fifth Doctor trilogy Mawdryn Undead, Terminus and Enlightenment.
We encounter our past selves from 2016, learn how the time-traveling Terminus is retroactively influential, keep obsessively discussing everybody’s outfits for some reason, and test just how deep our reservoir of fanbase goodwill goes. You don’t know what to make of this puzzling set of stories? Let us enlighten you!
Hey! You got your cosmic horror in my heroic adventure!
Hey! You got your heroic adventure in my cosmic horror!
Is Doctor Who compatible with Lovecraftian horror? Let’s discuss! In Episode 80: The Shadow over Lovecraft, the team run through a zippy survey of Image of the Fendahl, The Greatest Show in the Galaxy, the Big Finish audio The Lovecraft Invasion and Simon Bucher-Jones’ and Mark Clapham’s BBC Books novel The Taking of Planet 5.
Are there Deep Ones and Old Ones and mi-go? Yes! Is there discussion of Lovecraft and racism? As little as we could manage, but yes! Is there discussion about the right ways to pronounce Cthulhu and Nyarlathotep? Well no, because we ran out of time for that. But we had time for a lot else, including Benedict Cumberbatch, Nick Drake, mythos hoedowns, a certain amount of peeing, the psychedelic imagination, and Kelvin’s dog!
In this appropriately plus-sized Episode 79, Everyone was Screaming and Nobody was Happy, we cover all fourteen parts of The Trial of a Time Lord, and everything becomes very discursive, unclear, inconclusive, incoherent and incomprehensible, until it all sort of comes apart by the end. By which we mean that this Doctor Who story does that, not that our podcast does that. (Although our podcast also does do that.)
Listen as we discuss the history of the Doctor and his companions being done dirty by the BBC, and perk up as we all get kind of thirsty for Sabalom Glitz (and maybe the Master too a little bit).
It’s a long road but it’s worth your time (by which we mean that our podcast is that)!
In one of the more relaxed installments of Get Off My World!, Episode 78: Inscrutable Who, the gang discuss some of the weirder corners of the classic series: Warrior’s Gate and Ghost Light! Plus, Pat plays the role of trivia-Torquemada as he inflicts impossible and interminable Doctor Who trivia questions on Kelvin, Joshua and Ariel (can you guess who wins?).
Join us as we take a good look at time-traveling lions, a lot of woo happening, the right sort of nothing, the John Brown of E-Space, and the greatest f*ckin question in the world, and also somewhere in there Ariel says, “I like looking at your little face” (can you guess to whom?).
Plus: Big Finish found poetry!
In our super-sized Episode 77: Irregular Acts, the team tries to kick the rust off during our first all-in-person recording since January 2020.
