In episode #198 of the Truth Not Trends Podcast, your host Liam "TAKU" Bauer dives deep into one of the most hotly debated topics in the strength training world—equipment loyalty versus results. Are you a barbell purist? A machine-only minimalist? Obsessed with bands? TAKU challenges the dogma and makes the case for being tool agnostic—choosing the right tool for the right job based on context, goals, and safety, not brand loyalty or gym culture.

In this episode, you’ll learn the pros and cons of barbells, machines, resistance bands, and more. TAKU breaks down how each tool can serve a purpose in a smart, safe, and effective training program—and when they can become a liability. Whether you’re training at home, in a commercial gym, or coaching others, this conversation will help you rethink how and why you use the tools you do.

If you're ready to ditch the dogma and train smarter, not harder—this episode is for you.

Welcome, fitness enthusiasts and curious minds, to another thought-provoking episode of "Truth Not Trends" – the podcast that cuts through the clutter of fitness myths and brings you evidence-based insights to maximize your workout results.

Today, Liam and Jesse embark on a riveting journey into the age-old debate of Compound vs. Isolation Exercises.

If you've ever set foot in a gym or delved into fitness discussions, you've likely encountered the never-ending argument of which exercise approach reigns supreme. Should we prioritize compound movements that engage multiple muscle groups, or is the isolation route the key to target specific muscles with precision?

Some coaches will claim there are physiological advantages from using compound movements. They promote functional strength, enhance muscle coordination, and improve overall athleticism.

On the other hand, we can make a compelling case for isolation exercises. Are they merely the icing on the cake for fine-tuning aesthetics, or do they serve a more significant purpose in injury prevention and minimizing muscle imbalances? We'll dive deep into the world of targeted muscle isolation and explore how it complements a well-rounded training program.

In truth there are numerous examples of real people who have achieved remarkable results using both approaches.

The goal isn't to declare a winner in this showdown. Instead, we aim to bridge the gap between these training methods and help you make informed decisions about your fitness journey. Perhaps the optimal approach lies in harnessing the best of both worlds – a synergistic blend of compound and isolation exercises tailored to your unique goals.

So, whether you're a fitness veteran or someone just starting their workout odyssey, this episode of Truth Not Trends promises to equip you with knowledge to elevate your training and achieve remarkable results.

Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all approach to fitness, but with evidence-based insights, we can all make strides toward a healthier, stronger, and happier self.

In this week's TNT Strength podcast Liam and Jesse discuss training the Abdominal muscles.

Learn why training your abdominal muscles every day is not necessary and may not be the most effective approach. Like any other muscle group, the abdominal muscles need time to recover and rebuild after a workout. Overtraining them without proper rest can lead to muscle fatigue, diminished performance, and increased risk of injury.

It is generally recommended to allow a minimum of 48 hours of rest between direct abdominal workouts to allow for proper recovery. This time allows the muscles to repair and grow stronger. Instead of training your abdominal muscles every day, you can focus on incorporating a balanced exercise routine that targets your midsection muscles a few times per week.

Additionally, it's important to note that having visible abs is not solely dependent on how frequently you train them. The appearance of your abs is largely influenced by your body fat percentage. Even if you have well-developed abdominal muscles, they may not be visible if they are covered by a layer of fat. To reveal your abs, you need to combine abdominal exercises with a healthy High Protein Whole Food Personal Eating Plan and aim for overall body fat reduction.

TNT Strength can help you design a suitable workout program that incorporates abdominal exercises and allows for adequate rest and recovery.

This week Liam and Jesse are joined by a surprise guest who popped in just in time to join us in a discussion on the age old debate: Machines Vs Free Weights.

The majority of modern weight rooms today consist of mostly power racks and benches, with machines being considered inferior or less “FUNCTIONAL”.

The scientific literature says your muscles can’t distinguish what’s providing the resistance—whether you stimulate them with a barbell or a machine, you’ll get roughly the same result. When conducting training for regular folks, seniors, younger athletes, people who don’t need, want or require the specific skills of barbell training, machines are often a safer, better option.

Join us and find out why at TNT Strength we feel muscle overload can be applied with a variety of tools: barbells, dumbbells, machines, manually applied resistance, body weight, sand bags, etc. Anything that can create high tension in the muscles can be used.

Join us this week as we discuss High Intensity Strength Training with our guest Richard Chartrand of Sustainable Success.

Richard first discovered “high intensity strength training” around 1981, when reading The Nautilus Bodybuilding Book by Ellington Darden PHD.

After years of training with a “More is Better" approach Richard began immediately applying these principles to himself. Along the way he ended up competing in and winning or placing in a few natural bodybuilding contests (while strength training less than 20 minutes per week),

Almost 40 years later, the scientific evidence has reinforced that these ideas expressed in the writings of Ellington Darden and Arthur Jones were far ahead of their time. Richard decided to pursue his passion of helping people to achieve their optimal physical results by starting his own personal training business.

Richard is confident that these methods can help athletes young and old to maximize their performance, but for many of his clients their goal is to “age gracefully” ensuring that their physical independence is maintained well into their golden years.

This week join Liam, Jesse, and our newest strength coach Rosie as we discuss the importance of strength training during menopause.

Menopause is the most important time in a woman's life to do resistance exercise.

During the menopause years, women typically experience double the muscle loss of their younger years. Between the ages of 50 and 60, women can change from a half-pound average muscle loss per year to a one-pound average muscle loss per year (largely due to estrogen reduction). Bone loss follows a very similar pattern.

Strength training (along with sufficient sleep and protein intake) can help maintain and even increase muscle mass and bone density during this same time period.

At TNT Strength we recommend brief, intense, infrequent strength training workouts as the foundation of a total fitness program. This style of training is safe efficient and effective for everyone.

The cornerstone of No Bull Strength And Performance intensity-based exercise is about finding the right amount of exercise the body needs to create positive adaptation (muscle growth, fat loss, strengthening of joints, etc.) It is not about doing countless sets of the same exercise or just moving through an exercise without purpose. In their programs, they make sure you are getting the most out of each set and each rep.

Gary has written some of our favorite books (some of which are required reading for our TNT Strength coaches). One of my all time favorites of is:…”What They Won’t Tell You. GOLF Performance Training“.

A longtime golfer, Bannister played with some of the world’s greatest champions. He established and coached the men’s and women’s varsity golf teams at Averett College, and opened South America’s first Nautilus gym, which led him to prepare Venezuela’s male and female golf teams for the World Team Amateur Championship in 1986.

We were very fortunate to have Gary as an early guest on our Truth Not Trends Podcast way back in episode #18. Gary was smart funny and a pleasure to speak with about all things Arthur Jones and Brief Intense Effective Strength Training.

He will be missed…

Gary F. Bannister, age 74, of Tequesta, Florida passed away on Friday, August 12, 2022. Gary was born February 26, 1948.

This week we talk about the difference between High-intensity training (HIT) and High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT).

High-intensity training (HIT) is a form of strength training popularized in the 1970s by Arthur Jones, the founder of Nautilus. The training focuses on performing high quality weight training repetitions to the point of momentary muscular failure. The fundamental principles of high-intensity training (HIT) are that exercise must be very intense, but workouts should be relatively brief and infrequent.

Fartlek, which means "speed play" was developed in 1930 for the Swedish cross country racing teams. As the name implies, it differs from traditional interval training in that it is unstructured; intensity and/or speed varies, as the athlete wishes. One component of Fartlek training is that it used a faster-than-race pace and concentrated on both speed and endurance training.

More structured Interval training was first introduced in the 1950s as a higher intensity form called sprint interval training, which reached 100% maximum heart rate and was used to improve the performance of elite Olympic athletes.

Other terms that are used interchangeably with HIIT are Tabata and circuit training. Tabata is a form of HIIT that was created by Professor Izumi Tabata in 1996 involving Olympic speedskaters. His exercise intervals were extremely high intensity, followed by very brief rest periods.
