In Romans 6, Paul answers one of the most important questions a Christian can ask: Who am I in Christ? Many believers continue to struggle with the weight of their past, allowing old failures, sins, and labels to shape their identity. But Paul presents a different story. Through baptism, believers are united with Jesus in His death, burial, and resurrection. The old self has been crucified, sin is no longer the master, a new life has begun.

During this season, I plan to share lessons with from our Sunday morning series at Southbelt Church of Christ.
In this episode we are starting a 6 week series from Paul's letter to the Romans. Have you ever noticed how many people are searching for something more? We live in a world full of questions about purpose, identity, hope, and truth. People are looking for meaning, looking for direction, and often wondering if there's something bigger than themselves.
Romans, as some have described, could be Paul's greatest letter. It's both challenging, and incredibly relevant because it speaks directly into the kinds of questions people are still asking today. In this first lesson, we are starting where Paul starts, with the gospel — the power of God for salvation. Central to Romans is an announcement. It's the good news that Jesus is Lord.

Love is a word often used in our culture. We love our friends, pizza, our families, and we love the Lord. Love can be used in many different ways. What do the Scriptures teach us about God and His love?
We can all use hope. Most of us have lived through seasons marked by anxiety, fear, uncertainty, or loss.
Sometimes those seasons are loud and overwhelming. Other times they are quiet, lingering beneath the
surface. And in moments like that, hope can feel uncertain, thin, or distant.
When the Bible talks about hope, it is not talking about wishful thinking or crossing our fingers. Scripture
speaks of hope as something solid, grounded, and deeply rooted in who God is and what God has done.

When most people talk about peace, they usually mean the absence of conflict. The absence of stress. The absence of noise. Peace becomes the quiet moment after the kids are in bed or the rare evening when the calendar is clear. But biblical peace is something much deeper. It is not simply the absence of noise or conflict. It is God making whole or putting together something that has been broken.

Thanksgiving week has a way of pulling us in two different directions. On one hand, it invites us to slow down, gather around a table, enjoy family, and remember what we are thankful for. On the other hand, it often brings stress, busyness, travel, deadlines, and the race to prepare for the holidays. It is possible to reach Thursday thankful in theory but exhausted in practice.
The Scriptures offer us a better way. They invite us not only to give thanks when things go well, but to cultivate gratitude as a way of life shaped by God's story. Thanksgiving in the Bible is not a seasonal activity. It is an attitude that forms us into people who recognize the presence and provision of God.

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to walk past someone in need? Sometimes we tell ourselves, “It’s not safe,” or “Someone else will help.”
Jesus told a story about this very thing, the Good Samaritan. Two religious leaders passed by a man beaten and left for dead. But a Samaritan, someone from a group despised by the Jews, stopped. He cared for the man and made sure he was safe.
The point? Compassion doesn’t ask, “Do I have to help?” Compassion asks, “How can I be a neighbor?”
In a world quick to look away, Jesus calls us to stop, see, and show mercy. That’s what it means to love your neighbor.

Matthew arranges his Gospel around five major teaching sections, mirroring the five books of Moses. From His baptism to His time in the wilderness, Jesus walks the path of Israel, He remains faithful where Israel failed. When He ascends the mountain to teach, He is not just giving good moral instruction but revealing the way of God’s Kingdom.
As we embark on this journey through the Sermon on the Mount, we are challenged to consider Jesus’ words: “Everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock” (Matthew 7:24).

We traced this idea of lovingkindness, meaning: “loyalty; or faithfulness. God is loyal love. Turning to the New Testament how this same love is revealed in Jesus' teachings. Episode Description:
As we journey through Hebrews 11, we're moving through a lineage of faith stretching from the beginning of the Scriptures. Our first few lessons highlighted the foundation of faith: that it involves a forward-looking trust in God's unseen promises. We started with Abel, whose sacrificial faith still speaks. Then Enoch walked with God, showing that faith is a relationship, not a mere act. Noah then followed, building an ark based on God's warning of things not yet seen, and he showed that faith obeys God's words. Abraham and Sarah taught us about faith, which looks to promises beyond our lifetime and holds onto God's covenant in the face of impossibility.
Now, we reach Moses, a towering figure in the Old and New Testaments, known for his faith and for leading an entire nation through a series of miraculous yet trying events. This week's lesson will focus on Hebrews 11:23-29, where the writer of Hebrews highlights key moments from Moses' life. We will explore what it meant for Moses to live out his faith in God's promises and how his choices continue to impact the story of faith today.

This week we consider a woman who had an extensive impact in her community using the smallest of tools. Tools that she had in her hands. As we continue our series, Bearing Witness, let's look at the example of Tabitha in Acts 9. We are considering the lives of several women we read about in the New Testament. In looking at their stories and reading these accounts, I hope we learn from their lives as we discover their significance in the gospel and early church communities. We began our series by noticing Mary Magdalene. Her story is a story of redemption, transformation, and devotion. Last week, we considered Lydia: a businesswoman, a leader, a woman who cultivated a receptive and generous heart. In Tabitha's life, we discover the importance of sewing kindness to those around us.

As we begin our series, I would like for us to consider a woman who, among other women, supported the ministry of Jesus. She was a faithful and devoted follower of Jesus and supported Jesus of her own means. We know her best as the woman Jesus healed of seven evil spirits, Mary Magdalene.

1 Peter is written to Christians experiencing trials and difficulties. Peter is writing to encourage and strengthen their faith. In our last lesson, we considered the importance of hope and that our hope in Christ is untouchable. Our hope in Christ cannot be taken away or pried away from our hands. Continuing in our lessons (1 Peter 1:13-25), we notice that hope in Christ is not only a future hope but a hope for today as well.

We are beginning a new series as we explore the letter of 1 Peter together. 1 Peter is a circular letter. It was written to churches that were scattered throughout the region of Asia Minor, modern-day Turkey. These Christians faced hostility and harassment because of their faith in Jesus (2:12, 3:16, 4:16). With the help of Silas (5:12), Peter wrote to encourage these Christians in their suffering.

Jesus sends out this wave of disciples to prepare the way for the towns and villages He is about to visit. When Jesus arrives, He announces the good news of God's kingdom. Much of Jesus' teaching through this section is in the form of parables. Amid this building tension, with Jesus setting His face towards Jerusalem and the cross, we find three teachings of Jesus about lost things: the Lost Sheep, the Lost Coin, and the Lost Son (Lk. 15). We have been studying the interactions of Jesus. As we do so, we are asking what we can learn from these interactions and conversations. What do we discover about Jesus? Our purpose is to know Jesus better and to draw closer to Him. Today, we turn to (Luke 7). Jesus heals a centurion's servant and raises a widow's son from the dead. Luke records several miracles in (Lk. 5), a man who is cleansed of leprosy and a paralytic man who is healed. After this, Luke tells the account of Jesus calling Matthew (Levi), a tax collector. Matthew leaves his duties, invites guests to a party for Jesus, and follows him. At first, these events may seem unconnected. However, I believe they reveal a deep purpose of Jesus.

As crowds pressed Jesus to hear the word of God proclaimed, he stood by the Lake of Gennesaret (or the Sea of Galilee). Then, seeing two fishing boats, Jesus steps into a boat belonging to Simon (Peter). Asking to be pushed out from the shore, Jesus sits in the boat to teach.

Following the larger story of the Bible, we begin to see how Jesus tested in the wilderness is not an "odd" story. Instead, this account follows a biblical pattern. Just as Israel crossed the Red Sea and entered the wilderness, Jesus crossed the waters of baptism to enter the wilderness. But, unlike Israel and the first humans, Jesus passes the test. This is because Jesus follows the wisdom and word of God, whereas others have followed their wisdom. Jesus leads a new exodus of God's people as the faithful Servant.

At times we all need a new start. Even a short break or vacation can provide a refresh. I enjoy long weekends. We don't often take them as a family, but it is always a refreshing time when we do. To drive somewhere different, to see other roads and different scenes. It always seems to be a breath of fresh air. Paul, in Colossians 3, shifts the focus of his letter. Continuing our study of Colossians, Paul warns the church of things that can "disqualify" Christians, pulling them away from the substance of Christ. Something that, if made the center of their focus, can disconnect them from the reality of Christ. We have talked about cultural pressures in Colossae, teaching, hollow and deceptive philosophy that sought to supplement the message of Christ. Continuing, Paul warns of shadows which themselves are not the reality.

In our study of Colossians, one of the themes we notice is pressure to turn away or substitute the gospel of Christ. There were cultural pressures that sought to add to the message of Christ. In this letter, the apostle Paul centers the church's focus on Christ. Christ is all-sufficient. The gospel does not need to be substituted, nor are additions required. Christ is all-sufficient. Paul warns the church not to turn away and accept something other than the authentic message of Christ.

In our first study of Colossians, one of the themes we focused on was Christ is all-sufficient. There were cultural pressures to accept something more than the gospel of Christ. It was taught that Christ was not enough. Something more is needed. At the beginning of this letter, Paul demonstrates how Christ is first and all-sufficient for the church. Nothing more is needed. Continuing, Paul will share the glorious hope of the gospel and how this good news is for everyone.

Epaphras visits Paul in prison and brings Paul news of the young church. The church is doing great! They strongly believe in Christ Jesus and deeply love the family of God (ref. Col. 1:4-5). But the church is under intense pressure to conform to cultural teachings. Some within the culture of Colossae thought the gospel of Christ needed to be supplemented with additional instructions.

Following Jesus requires humility. One of the basic principles we find in Scripture is "I cannot do this on my own." Gospel of John (chapter 9): Healing the Blind Man
Jesus has left the temple, and he passes by a man who was blind from birth. In a culture where there is no safety net for a person with disabilities, Jesus sees a man who must depend on the charity of others for his daily survival. Likely, the man’s parents can no longer care for him, as they lack financial ability. Thus, the blind man is left to beg for his daily needs.

The Light of the World
In John 8, Jesus says, “I am the light of the world.” (ref. Jn. 8:12), one of seven such statements Jesus makes concerning Himself in John’s gospel. Earlier, (ref. Jn. 6:35), Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” Each of these statements reveals something about the true identity of Jesus. In (Jn. 8), as Jesus speaks of Himself as the “light of the world,” He would continue to say, “He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” (ref. Jn. 8:12). How is Jesus the light of life, and what do His words reveal about Him?

John (7) begins with the Feast of Tabernacles. This marks a section of John’s gospel around significant meals or feasts and continues through (Jn. 10) with the Feast of Dedication or Hanukkah (ref. Jn. 10:22). From here, John moves to the raising of Lazarus in (Jn. 11). In many ways, the first significant movement of John’s gospel builds to the raising of Lazarus. As John 6 begins, we follow Jesus to a mountain. Here, Jesus feeds a large multitude of people with just a few loaves of bread and a few fish. John records these as signs and not miracles. I believe he intends these signs, as N. T. Wright describes, somewhat like a signpost. Signs pointing to the identity of who Jesus is leading others to come and meet Jesus. Jesus leaves the region of Galilee and travels up to Jerusalem. There was a pool there known as Bethesda. Here, many sick people, blind, lame, and paralyzed gathered at this pool hoping to be healed. Although this healing, or sign, is an important sign, the account becomes much more about Jesus’ healing on the Sabbath than a man who has been healed.

Continuing in John’s gospel, we follow two very different conversations. Nicodemus, among the religious elite of his day, and a Samaritan woman, whose life has left her longing to satisfy her thirst. Although these conversations have many different contrasts, John focuses us on the Messiah. In Jesus, we can experience new life from above, and waters springing up to everlasting life. The gospel of John, as others have described, is like stepping into an art museum. You can pass by the paintings just noticing them and get an idea of what the artist intends to represent, or you can stand in front of the picture and just get lost as you stare deeply at it. Through the Gospel of Mark, there have been ups and downs, twists and turns, in following Jesus’ kingdom message. As His disciples have walked with Him, they have struggled to put all the pieces together. Jesus often said and did the unexpected. In Mark 15, the narrative of Mark’s gospel shifts to the foot of the cross. Jesus is mocked, the Messiah has been led to Golgotha, they have stripped His clothes and beat Him. Hung on the cross, after Jesus breathed His last breath, He was taken down. His body wrapped in fine linen laid in a tomb that hewed out of rock. A stone was rolled against the opening of the grave to seal it shut.

In (Mk. 14), we read of another significant shift in the narrative of Mark's Gospel. From this point, Jesus will not be speaking and teaching publicly. Mark will not record any more miracles. Here is a shift to the final steps in the mission of Jesus, the mission to the cross. Mark 14 is a chapter with so many references to the Old Testament and God's deliverance of Israel from the hand of Egypt. This background provides much of the context for (Mark 14).

The events leading up to (Mark 13) have moved quickly. In Mark 11, Jesus entered Jerusalem, He cleansed the Temple, and His authority has been questioned. Jesus spoke in parable, speaking against the religious leaders, (Mk. 12), and has been tested by the religious leaders as they have asked questions of Jesus trying to trap Him. Moving to the text in Mark 13, I believe it is essential to keep all of these events in our minds to help in our understanding of (Mark 13) and the things Jesus says.

MARK 11:28 (NKJV) “And they said to Him, "By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority to do these things?"
Although they question Jesus, Jesus turns this question around, "I also will ask you one question; then answer Me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things: The baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men? Answer Me." (Mk. 11:29, 30).
The religious leaders do not provide an answer to Jesus' question. They are in a bit of a trap. If they were to say John's baptism was from heaven, then the obvious question would be, "Why then did you not believe him?" (ref. Mk. 11:31). If they were to say John's baptism was from man, not from God's authority or heaven, they feared what the people might do because they saw John as a prophet of God. So, they do not answer Jesus' question.

Through Mark’s gospel one of the themes introduced is the kingdom of God (ref. Mk. 1:1; 14). Part of understanding Mark’s account is understanding the good news of the kingdom: God’s rule and reign on the earth. However, as we move along in the narrative, we begin to see that Jesus’ view and understanding of God’s kingdom is not what many understood or expected God’s kingdom to be. Many had expected God’s Messiah (Jesus) to overthrow political systems and deliver an oppressed people from the Roman rule of the first century.

In America, we have an economy based on healthy competition. An economy that competes to design, manufacture, and bring to market a better “widget.” If you can get to market a better widget at a more affordable price than your competition, more than likely, you will be successful. How did Jesus understand success? In today’s episode, we consider Mark 9 as Jesus talks to His disciples about success.

The disciples were to hold these things in their hearts until the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. It is the hope for all who are in Christ. The burden of taking up the cross and following after Jesus, setting your desires aside, losing your life for the sake of the gospel. It's a message of sacrifice for the hope of being with Jesus as we see Moses and Elijah standing with Him.

Who is Jesus? This is a question many people have asked. As we have studied the Gospel of Mark, we have made mention several times that Jesus is just not what people were expecting. The kingdom of God, the kingdom that Jesus establishes, is not what people were expecting. In fact who Jesus is and what Jesus is doing seems to be completely different from what many expected.

Have you ever walked into a room and just felt the tension? We may have heard the expression, "The tension is so thick you could cut it with a knife." In Mark 8 we really feel the tension that is developing between competing views of God's kingdom and the kingdoms of the world. In this chapter is the account of Jesus feeding the four thousand. However, this account is connected to the larger narrative that we find in Mark's Gospel.

Jesus has just finished teaching about what truly makes a person unclean. It is not what is on the outside that makes a person unclean, but it is the heart that defiles a person (ref. Mk. 7:15). In an area where He should have found faith, Jesus saw those who honor him in word only, and their hearts were far from Jesus. (ref. Mk. 7:6). However, it is in this Gentile region that Jesus finds people of great faith. A woman whose daughter has an unclean spirit and a man who is deaf and mute. Could it be that Jesus is providing a valuable, practical, hands-on lesson for His disciples about the kingdom of God? I can only join others in speculating. I do believe there is a connection, and a reason Mark is pointing us to these accounts.

We all have routines and traditions. It may be something as simple as brushing our teeth in the morning. Even this simple task is a tradition, a habit. In Mark 7, Jesus is questioned about traditions. Some of the Pharisees and scribes ask Jesus a question. His disciples are eating with unwashed hands, and this raises questions for some. The disciples of Jesus did not specially wash their hands before eating, which is not in keeping with the traditions of the elders. Traditions and habits can either be good or bad. They can draw us closer to the Lord, or they can push us away from Him. As Christians, we should desire to please the Lord in our lives. Our traditions and habits should reflect this desire.

In the gospel of Mark, Mark records several miracles of Jesus. Jesus heals a demon-possessed man, a woman suffering from bleeding and raising Jairus' daughter from the dead. These miracles demonstrate Jesus to be the Son of God. They also demonstrate Jesus' power and authority over nature, sickness, disease, and death.

What is our greatest need? In Mark 2, Jesus heals a paralytic man. However, it's what Jesus said that sent shockwaves through the house and throughout the neighboring communities, "Son, your sins are forgiven you." It is difficult to describe the relationship we are given in Christ. It is difficult to understand His grace, mercy, and forgiveness. John provides for us an understanding of who God is. He is light. In doing so, he describes an amazing relationship we share in as those who are called out of darkness. In our lives, we are to strive daily to walk in the light. To walk according to His truth, purity, and holiness. As we do so, we cannot forget that it is through His grace that we stand and because of His sacrifice that we are made partakers of the light.

Today makes a difference! What can we do today that will help us in maintaining and reaching our goal as Christians? How can we run the race faithfully so that we can hear the words "Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.” (ref. Matt. 25: 23). In the book of James, I believe we find some very practical steps we can take today to help us live faithfully in the Lord.
